Recently widowed, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle takes a personal interest in a very bizarre case, the son of a Vicar is believed to have carried out a series of animal killings, Doyle strongly believes the flimsy case against Analji is racially motivated.
It plays out very much like an episode of Sherlock Holmes, only this time the case is a real life one, The Wyrley Outrages, and The Detectives, Doyle and Woodie are also real, although they are very much in the guise of Holmes and Watson here.
It's such a strange story, filled with baffling events and oddities, but it is an engaging story, and definitely one to hold your attention.
Set over three parts, it's well paced, very well made, and boasts some terrific acting, Clunes really is the standout as Doyle, a fascinating character, a man with progressive attitudes in his day.
Very atmospheric, very moody, it's well worth watching. 8/10.

This show is "based" on a real happening. That does not mean that everything in the show actually happened, only that an historical event was the starting point. This is entertainment so there is going to be some dramatic leeway but there are also actual events present in the show.
I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan but the title tells you that this is about his inventor, not Holmes, so I knew not to expect Holmes' methods or quirkiness. I also did not expect a "Dr. Watson" but was pleased to find out who the character was based on.
This movie is entertaining; admittedly some of the acting is lacking, but all-in-all, it is something I highly recommend. This movie has humor, light drama, mystery, and some good actors. If you want "real" watch a documentary; for fun entertainment "Arthur & George" is a good bet.

I couldn't follow it at first when I discovered it on YouTube. Looked it up on Prime and found it on PBS Masterpiece. Watched it and became delighted. Well shot. A bit dark in nature and scenery. However, once I discovered it as truth, I became deeply invested and all the more pleased with the retelling of history.
Well done to the producers and crew. Well done to the actors. And well done to PBS, yet again, for finding valuable ways to produce historical learning in an engaging and entertaining manner. Indeed, I highly recommend higher level teenage educational institutions subscribe this piece as a learning assignment for those interested in historical legislation.

Marvelous fun based upon Julian Barnes' amazing novel with the wonderful Martin Clunes in superb form as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Ed Whitmore's screenplay captures the magic and pathos of the book while dramatizing it with imagination and flair. As the great author endeavors to solve the mystery surrounding the unjust conviction of a solicitor, there is suspense, humor, and drama throughout the proceedings. Filmed beautifully and with careful attention to period detail, it is nothing less than fascinating to see Doyle brought to life and given such humanity by Clunes. Fans of Holmes will indeed find this a rewarding series and will revel in the exciting and riveting story of the creator of their hero and one of the true icons of English literature. Don't miss, especially if you know little of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's real life.
Okay, this will never win an Emmy, or even receive a nomination, but while I was sick in bed it provided fun entertainment. I binge watched it. And Martin Clunes is always a pleasure.
