Exclusive: Call My Agent! star Camille Cottin has reunited with Nathan Ambrosioni for his third film Out of Love about a woman whose sister disappears leaving behind her two young children.
It marks the actress’s second collaboration with the 25-year-old, self-taught director after starring in his second 2022 feature Toni about a single mother of five, contemplating a new life as her children leave home,
“He is writing, directing and editing everything himself. It’s all in his head. He’s really obsessed with cinema and has so many references and directors that he loves… which really enriches what he does,” says Cottin of Ambrosioni, who has cited influences such as Hirokazu Kore-Eda and Edward Yang in past interviews.
Out of Love also tackles themes of motherhood but in a more somber fashion.

Thomas Jolly, who masterminded the unique Olympic opening ceremony in Paris, has been reflecting on how the bad weather on that day last July felt apt.
Diving deep into the ceremony six months on, Jolly told a Series Mania audience that the rain “acted as a throughline in a way” to what the team, which included Call My Agent! creator Fanny Herrero, were trying to do with the ceremony.
“The rain that fell on Lady Gaga also falls on the audience watching from the riverbanks,” he said. “It put us all on an equal footing and that was the key message we wanted to share through the live event – sharing.”

“They were always trying to minimize the work of writing and how important it was,” Fanny Herrero said this morning during a keynote at the Goteborg Film Festival’s TV Drama Vision sidebar.
The perpetrators she had been describing — whom she spent much of this morning’s session politely criticizing — were the producers of the hit French comedy Call My Agent!. Herrero was a writer and showrunner on the comedy before leaving after season 3, for what she described as the constant tussle between her position as lead writer and the show’s producers who she said favored the authority of series directors during production.
“Having to fight all the time to be recognized and have the money that goes with it. In the end, the conflict was too fierce, so I said bye,” Herrero said.
“I wanted them to realize how much work I did and how important it was.

Call My Agent! star brings her light comic touch to a flimsy, sugary but sometimes oddly daring French romcom
The star quality of Laure Calamy has been an open secret since the runaway success of the French TV comedy Dix Pour Cent, bought by Netflix and renamed Call My Agent!, in which she played Noémie, the ditsy assistant to the head of a talent agency. Since then she has appeared in a number of sugary French films of which, sadly, this is another, but her distinctive style and light comic touch elevates it a little.
Calamy is Iris, a dentist married to handsome Stéphane (Vincent Elbaz), with two teen daughters, living in a stylish Paris apartment. But their relationship is now sexless and Iris experiences a midlife crisis, yearning for the sophisticated French sex-comedy equivalent of piña coladas and getting caught in the rain. At this point, we all know that for better or for worse, Lady Gaga loves going Method for her roles. She claimed that for her role as Ally in "A Star is Born" — the role that won her an Oscar for best original song thanks to the showstopper "Shallow" — she lived in the role for years. More recently, she changed her singing voice and walked the set of "Joker: Folie á Deux" as Harleen "Lee" Quinzel. In 2022, for the biopic "House of Gucci," Lady Gaga took "the Method," where you fully embody your character even when the cameras are off super seriously, and even spoke in an Italian accent for her role as Patrizia Reggiani. “Any couple in love should remember that love might not last,” says someone midway through “Three Friends,” shrugging off a rebuffed kiss with impressively unruffled Gallic poise. If everyone were so sanguine about such matters, most varieties of love story wouldn’t have reason to exist. Certainly a film like Emmanuel Mouret’s Chablis-dry romantic comedy, in which consenting adults fret and fritter over semi-consenting adultery, would be far more of a novelty than it is. Drolly unpicking the sexual and emotional entanglements of three Lyon gal pals hovering around 40 — two married, one single, none fulfilled — Mouret’s film won’t strike anyone as fresh, either within his directorial oeuvre or that whole cinematic subgenre dedicated to French philandering, but it’s easy, breezy, pleasingly grownup viewing.
Mouret has been turning out variations on this formula since his debut “Laissons Lucie faire!” in 2000, once dipping into heritage cinema with the 2018 period piece “Lady J,...

After a year when Hollywood strikes stripped festival red carpets of their stars, the 81st Venice Film Festival marked a return to oh-so-glamorous form Wednesday night with an A-list opening night.
The Venice fans, many of whom spent up to 10 hours in the searing Italian heat for a glimpse, rarely stopped screaming as one star after the other shimmied past the paparazzi and into the Sala Grande for the opening night ceremony, and world premiere of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Burton and the starry cast of his long-awaited sequel — including Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Willem Defoe, Justin Theroux and Monica Bellucci — grabbed the lion’s share of attention, but there were plenty of whoops and hollers for the other celebrities on offer, including French acting icon Isabelle Huppert, president of this year’s Venice festival jury, and Cate Blanchett, in town for the premiere of her Apple TV+ series Disclaimer.

Sigourney Weaver took center stage on the opening night of the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
Ahead of the world premiere of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the iconic star of films such as “Alien,” “Avatar” and “Gorillas in the Mist” was awarded the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in honor of her work spanning 45 years.
“I’m sure I’m dreaming,” she said on receiving the award. “Thank you for this jet fuel of encouragement.” She later said that her Golden Lion was “the most astonishing honor I can imagine,” adding that the statue would be “sitting next to me on the plane, it will be next to be in the gondola and my husband will have to get used to having it in bed with us.”
Before being given the award, there was a surprise video message from Weaver’s “Avatar” director James Cameron, who noted that she was “way over due for that Oscar.

Fresh from its hugely impressive haul of nine Emmy nominations for hit Apple TV+ show “Slow Horses,” powerhouse producers See-Saw Films has unveiled a slate of new literary options also being developed for TV.
The British/Australian company, which in recent years has demonstrated its ability to amass acclaim, awards and audiences on the big screen and small, has landed the rights to three pieces of IP, including one that has already proved a hit on stage.
Playwright Benedict Lombe’s epic romance “Shifters” — starring “Supacell” lead Tosin Cole and “The Power” actress Heather Ageypong — is currently in the process of transferring to the West End after a sellout run at the Bush Theater (and with Idris Elba recently joining the play’s lineup of producers). But it’s now also being adapted by Lombe for TV with See-Saw, with plans to take the story beyond the stage play and into a returning series.

Great guest stars can shake things up when they are handled well. Some shows like '30 Rock' and 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' excel at making the best out of their celebrity stars. It's important for guest stars to fit a show's established world and humor, whether they are celebrities playing themselves or not.
Sitcom guest stars can often disrupt the flow of a show, but when they are handled well, they can make the comedy even funnier. Great guest stars need to fit into the established world of the show, but the truly memorable ones can shake things up and provide hilarious new conflicts. Some sitcoms seem naturally better-suited to facilitating guest appearances than others, and some even make cameos part of their identity.
While all sitcoms need guest stars every now and then to keep things fresh, not all of them consistently choose good options. Big stars can sometimes overshadow the main cast.

French writer and director Fanny Herrero is best known internationally as the showrunner behind Paris talent agency comedy-drama Call My Agent!, which was a hit in its original version and has since spawned a raft of remakes.
She has recently added a new string to her bow as one of the co-writers of the much talked about Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony, which unfolded under torrential rain on the River Seine on Friday.
This credit will likely also boost her international footprint, or perhaps, her notoriety, given the wildly differing responses to the show, which embraced diversity and inclusion and brazenly explored history and tradition with an unapologetically contemporary take, at the same time as being the first Olympics opening to unfold on a river.
Speaking to Deadline prior to the ceremony, Herrero said the invite from artistic director Thomas Jolly to join the co-writing team came out of the blue.

With this year’s Olympic Games Opening Ceremony just days away, odd sights and rumors now swirl around Paris.
On Monday, as the French press guessed at surprise performers – with Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and Dua Lipa among the names heard often – local cameras caught glimpse of a grand piano, hidden below a tarp, being floated down the Seine. And though Paris 2024 organizers remained tight-lipped about any and all cameo performances, the emblematic waterway itself is set to play a starring role at Friday’s affair.
Running just under four hours, the open-air pageant will play as a nautical cruise, following 85 boats – each carrying an Olympic delegation – on a four-mile parade through the City of Light’s main artery. Setting off from the Pont d’Austerlitz and culminating at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, the nautical event will make use of the city’s historical sites and locales, staging twelve living tableaus,...

Three-time Oscar-nominated actor Sigourney Weaver will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 81st Venice International Film Festival.
Weaver said, “To be gifted this award is a privilege I share with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with throughout the years. I proudly accept this award in celebration of all who have helped bring these films to life.”
Venice’s director Alberto Barbera, whose mandate was just renewed, said, “An actress of the caliber of Sigourney Weaver has few rivals. Of all the actors with claims to nepo baby aristocracy, few, if any, have the same pedigree as Chiara Mastroianni. An accomplished performer and winning star all on her own, the daughter of Catherine Deneuve and Marcello Mastroianni has that rare distinction of seeing both of her parents grace Cannes Film Festival posters, leaving a project that playfully interrogates that very heritage a near shoo-in for the festival spotlight. But that vaunted competition slot does little favors for Christophe Honoré’s slight and sketch-like “Marcello Mio,” which plays as an incisive photo-shoot concept in search of wider justification.
This fashion shoot concept isn’t hypothetical, as Honoré’s meta-movie doodle opens on the very same, finding Mastroianni decked out in full Anita Ekberg garb as she saunters into a pool before Paris’ Saint-Sulpice church reformatted as an ersatz Trevi Fountain. The visual folds in several layers, taking Marcello’s iconic turn in “La Dolce Vita,...

It’s little wonder why French president Emmanuel Macron was visibly moved as he inducted Mediawan CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton into France’s Legion of Honor last October, calling the exec “the ultimate French success story.”
In a country rarely known to promote social mobility, Capton-esque career trajectories are scarce. A self-made entrepreneur born into a middle-class Normandy family, Capton began his professional life as a teen with an entry-level internship, eschewing elite universities, making the exec a rare bird among France’s top media execs. For all that, Capton remains more humble than flamboyant, letting his track record speak for itself.
In 2015, he co-founded Mediawan with investment banker Matthieu Pigasse and telecom billionaire Xavier Niel, and since then the group has traversed a tumultuous period marked by a pandemic, strikes and economic recessions by growing stronger.

Cannes Film Festival president Iris Knobloch kicked off her mandate last year with a banner edition that saw the premieres of Oscar-winners “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Fall.”
Ever since, Knobloch — who is the former boss of WarnerMedia France and Germany — has been discreetly collaborating with festival director Thierry Frémaux to lure U.S. studios and talent on the Croisette. And while the film business’ state of mind is rather gloomy, Cannes opened on a vibrant note Tuesday night with a tribute to Meryl Streep, who hadn’t been at Cannes since “A Cry in the Dark,” for which she won best actress in 1989. The ceremony also celebrated “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig, who is presiding over the competition jury.
In an interview with Variety at the start of the festival, a cheerful Knobloch said the presence of Gerwig, Streep and “Call My Agent!” star Camille Cottin (who...

Even Kristin Scott Thomas can’t save this painful French comedy about two older women heading for the Greek islands for wacky fun
Marc Fitoussi, whose directing credits include work on the French TV hit Call My Agent!, has created this excruciatingly sugary French comedy of female friendship in a vacation paradise. It’s a one-note, one-joke, non-Mamma-Mia! the non-musical, with three lead performances that are borderline insufferable.
Olivia Côte plays Blandine, a straitlaced, sobersided woman whose life is miserable; she’s divorced from a man who is now marrying someone half his age and her 20-year-old son is moving out. But then she reconnects with an old schoolfriend, the wild and irrepressible Magalie (Laure Calamy) who suggests they do something they once dreamed of as kids: visit the Greek island of Amorgos, because it was featured in Luc Besson’s The Big Blue, their favourite film from those days.

Meryl Streep will receive the honorary Palme d’Or on the opening night of the 77th edition of Cannes Film Festival, Variety has learned.
Luring the Oscar winner is yet another feat for this Cannes edition, which will bring together a flurry Hollywood legends. Notably, George Lucas will receive the honorary Palme d’Or during the closing ceremony; Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada” are playing in competition; and George Miller‘s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Kevin Costner’s Western epic “Horizon, an American Saga” are playing out of competition. Streep will be also in good company at the festival with “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig serving as jury president. The pair worked together on “Little Women.”
The honorary tribute will mark Streep’s long-awaited return to Cannes after decades. It appears that her last trip to the festival dates back to Fred Schepisi...
