When Quentin Tarantino Revealed How This Stanley Kubrick Classic Inspired His Iconic Debut With Reservoir Dogs
Image
Which Stanley Kubrick Movie Inspired Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia; Instagram )

Quentin Tarantino is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the industry. He has given the world some of the most commendable cinematic works, whether Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. But even a filmmaker as bold and unique as Tarantino had his influences. And one of the biggest? Stanley Kubrick. Specifically, Kubrick’s 1956 film The Killing played a huge role in shaping how Tarantino approached his own debut, Reservoir Dogs.

Released in the mid-1950s, The Killing marked a turning point in Kubrick’s career. Until then, he had only made a few smaller films, but The Killing was his first real entry into Hollywood filmmaking. The story, adapted from the novel Clean Break by Lionel White, follows a group of men planning and carrying out a racetrack heist. Kubrick...

UTA and Echo Lake rep the scribe, who also topped the 2023 list with Bad Boy. Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge is on board to produce.

Untitled’s highest ranked script, at 38 mentions, is Natan Dotan’s Alignment, the hot AI-themed piece that Fifth Season recently secured in a seven-figure deal, with Makeready coming aboard to produce, as we were first to report. Securing 37 mentions, CAA...

When Stanley Kubrick Went Noir, and More: Palm Springs’ Annual Film Noir Festival Returns With More Black-and-White Larceny
Image
The desert will again be a hotbed of deceit and larceny in luxurious black-and-white as the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival returns to Palm Springs this Thursday through Sunday, with the quintessential noir classics “The Killing” and “Double Indemnity” bookending a marathon weekend that otherwise tends toward more rarely screened ‘40s and ‘50s titles.

Several sons or daughters of the original actors or directors will be on hand, but of special interest to festival attendees will be the presence of one of the actual filmmakers: James B. Harris, 94, Stanley Kubrick’s producing partner for several of his best early films, who’ll be able to speak first-hand about the making of 1956’s “The Killing,” the crime drama that turned out to be Kubrick’s first real masterpiece.

“I’m just utterly thrilled that ‘The Killing’ will show and Jimmy will be the guest on opening night,” says the festival’s longtime guiding light,...

The Killing 4K
Image
This picture looks as modern and radical as anything from Italy in the 1960s, yet it’s a tough-talking take on hardboiled crime caper fiction. In three pictures Stanley Kubrick went from amateur to contender: now he has a like-minded producer, a top-flight cast, and the help of the legendary pulp author Jim Thompson. Sterling Hayden, Marie Windsor, Elisha Cook Jr., Coleen Gray, Vince Edwards peg the cynical film noir style, and Kubrick maintains the source book’s splintered chronology for the tense racetrack heist. All Hollywood took notice — at least that part of the industry looking out for daring, progressive storytelling. Now in 4K, Kubrick’s superb B&w images look better than ever.

Eiff 2017: Julius Caesar Review
Author: Guest

As a row of women, led by prison guards, are marched onto a sparse and industrial set, the Julius Caesar that audiences are familiar with is revived and remodelled in Phyllida Lloyd’s adaptation of the Shakespeare classic, in this first instalment of the Donmar Shakespeare Trilogy.

The cast, exclusively female, and for some, their first experience of performing Shakespeare, not only bring a different voice to a stereotypically male dominated production, but at the same time provide a platform for voices of those who may feel excluded from mainstream society and culture.

Led by theatre veteran Harriet Walter, Donmar’s Julius Caesar pushes Shakespeare into new territory, bringing it bang up-to-date with current issues relating to gender, the prison system, fear and diversity. The audience on screen: set in the round, and filmed over two nights, allows for seamless camera placement. Part prison, part Rome: It smashes...
