Famous adaptation to cinema of also very famous theatre play by Nelson Rodrigues, this is indeed an interesting melodrama about social taboo, perversion and psychiatric disturbs. It is the most famous piece in Arnaldo Jabor's (quite irregular) cinematography and, in my opinion, it is his second best (after Everything's Alright). However, it is far from perfect. There are several flaws, with pace problems (quite sleepy sometimes), some unbalanced moments which should be simply cut out (most of the 15 first minutes, for instance), presence of homophobia and racism (by the way, Cuzco is not in Bolivia...)... Paulo Porto and Darlene Glória go very well in the two leading roles (and so does Hugo Carvana in his minor one), but I definitely did not like Paulo César Peréio here. Despite all these criticisms, and the antipathy both Jabor and Rodrigues deserve, the film worth being watched anyway and has merits, including its art direction.
