Thou Shalt Not Steal Review: An Edge-of-Your-Seat Australian Road Trip
Image
Set in the vast outback of 1980s Australia, Thou Shalt Not Steal tells the story of Robyn, a 17-year-old Aboriginal girl who escapes from a juvenile detention center. Her grandfather passes information that her father, believed dead, may actually still be alive. This spurs Robyn into action as she steals a taxi and embarks on a road trip to find him.

Along the way, she’s joined by Gidge, a troubled youth seeking escape from his domineering preacher father. Also in pursuit are Maxine, the former owner of the stolen taxi, and Robert, intent on getting his son back.

With Robyn at the helm, the series plays out like a thrill-ride adventure across the rugged Australian landscape. But it also weaves in deeper layers. Robyn grows in self-discovery as she reconnects with her culture and heritage. And the story highlights ongoing issues of justice and equality through its depiction of...

Dylan River’s Toronto Series ‘Thou Shalt Not Steal’ Explores Australia’s Dark History With Humor: ‘If You’re Preaching to the Converted, How Are You Educating?’ (Exclusive)
Image
“Thou Shalt Not Steal,” an upcoming Australian series that premiered three of its eight episodes at the Toronto International Film Festival, is an entertaining road trip that cleverly tells an Aboriginal tale through use of humor and dozens of instantly recognizable Australia stereotypes.

It is packaged as eight half-hour episodes that will upload to Australian streamer Stan on Oct. 17. International rights are handled by Dcd Rights.

Told through the eyes of a young Aboriginal delinquent woman, “Thou Shalt Not Steal” races through a 1980s-medley of toxic masculinity, functioning alcoholics, snags on the barbie, reverence for the Outback and the quiet wisdom of the indigenous population.

But it is a fun and inviting ride as Robyn and an awkward white teenager (played by fellow “Heartbreak” star Will McDonald) flee her small central desert community in a stolen taxi. On their heels – and sometimes ahead of them – are a snake-like ex-hooker and the boy’s domineering father,...

Netflix’s Heartbreak High Is the Deliciously Messy Teen Drama We’ve Been Missing in the Genre
Image
Think about it: Can you name a recent series that gives off Dawson’s Creek, The O.C. or even Pretty Little Liars energy? Shows that offer incredible melodrama, characters you simultaneously love/can’t stand and baffling storytelling choices in a high school setting? Not considering the supernatural ones — if only because their scope tends to reach too far beyond high school — we can count this type of all-engrossing youth drama on one hand. The teen soap output from The CW, Freeform (née ABC Family) and MTV has become all but nonexistent.

Ok, we’ll give you Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty...

Heartbreak High Season 2 Cast & Character Guide: Who Plays Who In The Australian Netflix Show
Image
Heartbreak High season 2 on Netflix continues the drama with new characters, romances, and cliffhangers at Hartley High. Season 2 blends Australian humor with mature storylines for a unique teen show that focuses on representation and diverse characters. The ensemble cast in season 2, led by characters like Amerie and Harper, brings depth and growth to the students at Hartley High.

Heartbreak High season 2 is Netflix's return to the stories, romances, and angst of Hartley High in the Australian comedy-drama, now with a handful of new students and teachers. A soft reboot of the 1994 Australian TV program of the same name, Heartbreak High is a Netflix show centered on the faculty and high schoolers at Hartley. Although it's an ensemble show, the action primarily focuses on Amerie (Ayesha Madon) and Harper's (Asher Yasbinek) friendship turned rivalry in season 1. Season 2 opens with the school on fire and then backtracks to explain. Just another year at Hartley High.

9 Australian Slang Terms Used In Netflix's Heartbreak High (& What They Mean)
Image
"Eshay": Australian youth subculture associated with streetwear brands and crude language. Don't judge a book by its cover, even if they appear eshay. "Real Dog": Unacceptable or messed up. Harper embarrassing Dusty was a real dog move. Don't date your friend's ex, it's real dog. "Have a Yarn": To chat or tell a story. Malakai cheated on Amerie with Harper and tried to have a yarn to explain, but it was too late. What a real dog thing to do.

Netflix's hit Australian drama Heartbreak High has introduced audiences worldwide to new phrases and slang Australian terms that can be learned and incorporated seamlessly into everyday speech. While every generation has adopted slang from other cultures, Australian Gen Z slang is some of the most interesting. From "eshay" to "arced up," it's always fun learning new words and applying them to everyday lexicons.
