The awards, presented by India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, honored films certified in the calendar year 2023.

Actor-producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “12th Fail” — a Hindi-language biographical drama based on the life of civil servant Manoj Kumar Sharma — emerged as the major winner, earning the prestigious Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) for best feature film, as well as a best actor award for Massey.

Shah Rukh Khan received his first-ever national award for his performance in the box office juggernaut “Jawan” (Hindi), directed by Atlee. The Ott release announcement was made on social media by none other than the movie’s lead actor, Mohanlal. L2: Empuraan went through several difficulties even before its theatrical release. At one point, differences between the two production houses involved in the project, Lyca Productions and Aashirvad Cinemas, threatened to delay the release.

However, everything eventually worked out when Sree Gokulam Movies stepped in. But the controversies didn’t end after the theatrical release.

Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan was criticized for excessive violence and its depiction of certain historical events. As a result, the movie was edited to remove some of those portions, and a revised version was released in theatres nearly five days after its initial run began. It is expected that this edited version will be the one released on Ott.

Indian star Yash, known internationally for his role in the K.G.F. franchise, is working with award-winning director Geetu Mohandas on his next project, Toxic – A Fairy Tale For Grown-ups.

The pan-Indian film is being produced by Venkat K Narayana through two Bangalore-based production houses – Kvn Productions and Monster Mind Creations. It will be shot in multiple Indian languages.

Yash and Mohandas have been working together over the past year on the story of the film, which Mohandas will direct with Yash in the lead role. The producers have set a release date of April 10, 2025.

Yash starred in both K.G.F: Chapter 1, the first Kannada-language film to be a hit across India when it was released in 2018, and Kgf: Chapter 2, which was the highest-grossing film in India in 2022. Toxic – A Fairy Tale For Grown-ups is his project since Kgf: Chapter 2.
