One of the (many) shows to suffer the fatal blow of the Netflix cancellation axe could return as a movie. Beginning back in 2022, the action thriller spy series The Recruit was cut down in its prime after the streamer revealed that Season 2, which debuted back in January, would be the show’s last. Now, creator Alexi Hawley has confirmed his hopes for a comeback with a The Recruit movie.
Speaking with Deadline, The Recruit creator, writer, and executive producer Alexi Hawley, who is also behind the police procedural hit series The Rookie with Nathan Fillion, still has hope that the spy thriller series will be given the opportunity to wrap things up with a movie. But it’s too soon to know if it’ll happen for sure.

Just over a month after The Recruit finally premiered its second season, Netflix has canceled the series. Season two of the spy thriller found CIA Lawyer, Owen Hendricks, pulled into a life-threatening espionage situation in South Korea, only to realize that the bigger threat just might be coming from inside the Agency. The season would premiere after Netflix went all in on the marketing push for their one-two punch of spy series returning for second seasons, with the other being The Night Agent.
According to Deadline, news of The Recruit‘s cancelation broke from the Threads post of Colton Dunn, who played Lester Kitchens, and is a colleague of series star Noah Centineo’s. Netflix would then confirm the cancelation of the show. The Recruit was created by Alexi Hawley and produced by Lionsgate along with Hypnotic. And another one bites the dust. Netflix has become infamous for dropping that dreaded axe on popular and critically acclaimed shows, and now the action spy thriller series The Recruit has been added to that ever-growing list. Despite solid reactions, and even an improved second season, The Recruit has now been cancelled.
The disappointing news comes courtesy of cast member Colton Dunn, who stars in The Recruit as CIA agent Lester Kitchens alongside Noah Centineo’s CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks, who made the announcement on social media.
“The Recruit has been cancelled yall. Such a bummer. I’ll share some pics and fun memories on Ig but just wanted you to hear it from me. Thanks if you watched. I’m Available Now! Hire me for you tv story!!”

Netflix’s spy drama “The Recruit” has been canceled just a month after the premiere of Season 2, TheWrap has learned.
The news was first announced by cast member Colton Dunn, who wrote, “‘The Recruit’ has been cancelled y’all. Such a bummer. I’ll share some pics and fun memories on Ig but just wanted you to hear it from me. Thanks if you watched. I’m Available Now! Hire me for your TV story,” in a post on Threads.
No reason has been given for the show’s cancellation, but Netflix makes those decisions based on multiple factors, including cost relative to audience size. Whether that’s the case or not, the show faced challenges between seasons that may have hurt it.

At long last, Noah Centineo’s Owen Hendricks is back for more action, intrigue, and close shaves in The Recruit Season 2! After several delays brought on by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike, the CIA lawyer-turned-secret-agent travels to South Korea, where his most intense assignment awaits, enemies become partners, and sleep is the most precious commodity. For the latest Netflix action-oriented junket, the streamer arranged a double bill between The Recruit and The Night Agent, starring Gabriel Basso as FBI agent Peter Sutherland. Both seasons go hard in the paint to bring audiences a thrilling ride behind enemy lines, and today, we’re excited to share our interview with The Recruit stars Noah Centineo and Teo Yoo, who plays Jang Kyun Kim, Owen’s Seoul mate, if you will.

Netflix continues to score big in the world of action, with the second season of spy adventure The Recruit landing an even more impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes than its predecessor. As of now, The Recruit Season 2 holds an impressive rating of 88% on the review aggregator site, beating Season 1’s score of 68% and successfully building on this tale of a fledgling CIA lawyer who finds himself caught up in all manner of political conspiracies.
Ed Power of The Daily Telegraph awarded The Recruit Season 2 a near-perfect 4/5, and says “Netflix’s enthusiastically silly series is like the anti-Slow Horses.” In a good way, if it’s unclear.
“As time-killing hokum, The Recruit hits the target like 007 taking aim down a pre-credits gun barrel.”

A new trailer for Netflix series The Recruit gives a glimpse inside the action-packed Season 2, set to premiere on January 30. This time around, CIA lawyer-turned de facto field agent Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) is headed to South Korea, where he has “48 hours to stop an all-out war.”
With the tagline “Spy Meets Seoul,” the second season of The Recruit sees Hendricks back in the field in the South Korean capital, despite his boss, Walter Nyland (Vondie Curtis-Hall), reminding him: “You’re a lawyer.” Suffice it to say that Hendricks is eager to get back in the action. “But what if we involved operations without involving operations?” He says in the trailer.
How does he get back in the game? “He is cunning and charming. He is absolutely ruthless.” However, Hendricks needs help, as stated in the new footage, "Saving the world takes a pair.” Enter Hendricks’ unlikely partner in Seoul,...

The Recruit ain’t a rookie no more.
In a real Happy New Year-move from Netflix, on Thursday, January 2, 2025, the streamer released the main trailer for Season 2 of “The Recruit.” Somehow, Noah Centineo’s CIA lawyer-turned actual CIA operative is even more in over his head this time.
The trailer appropriately appropriates Green Day’s “American Idiot” with more than a dose of Korean flair — that’s the setting for this season. Centineo’s Owen Hendricks is in the middle of a covert spy mission over there, “only to realize that the bigger threat just might be coming from inside the Agency,” per the logline. The second season features six one-hour episodes — and now Teo Yoo of “Past Lives.” The trailer features ones of those cool-ass back-to-back fighting scenes with the two defending a K-Pop club’s dance floor.
