Netflix has commenced production on a series adaptation of Miles Franklin’s seminal Australian novel “My Brilliant Career,” with filming underway at Adelaide Studios and various South Australian locations.
The streaming giant is partnering with Jungle Entertainment on the period drama, which marks a fresh take on Franklin’s 1901 coming-of-age tale that captured the aspirations of young Australian women seeking independence and self-determination.
Set in rural Australia at the turn of the 20th century, the series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a spirited and ambitious young woman who dreams of literary fame and refuses to conform to the limited expectations placed upon women of her era. Born into a struggling farming family, Sybylla must navigate the constraints of her social circumstances while pursuing her artistic ambitions and grappling with questions of love, duty, and personal fulfillment. Her journey becomes a bold assertion of female independence in a society that offers few options beyond marriage and motherhood.

It's going to be one season and done for the Australian neo-Western series Territory on Netflix. While the show may have been envisioned as a new Yellowstone, it will not be reaching the same levels of success.
C21 Media has reported that Territory has been canceled at Netflix after one season. Reportedly, the plan was to continue with a second season, which makes sense, given how the freshman season concluded with a cliffhanger ending. The cast and crew were informed weeks ago that Territory wouldn't be getting a second season, and Netflix has now confirmed the news after the news started hitting the press.

Netflix just canceled its best answer yet to Yellowstone and it may be a mistake!
There's an old rule in television that when a show is a hit, you're going to see a lot of copycats trying to capture the same success. Thus, when Yellowstone became a sensation, it's no shock that other streamers would try their own shows of a family of ranchers fighting for control.
Among them was Territory, an Australian series that was released globally in October 2024. The six-episode series was pushed well with hopes of a second year.
Sadly, that won't happen as C21 Media confirms the series won't be returning for a second year. In a rarity, Netflix issued a statement on the cancellation from Que Min Luu, Netflix's director of content for Australia and New Zealand.

Netflix’s recent shot at taking the Yellowstone crown with its Australian neo-western series Territory has come to an end after only one season. Australian outlets and C21 Media report today that the show has been canceled and will not be returning for a second season.
Released on Netflix globally in late October 2024, the big Australian epic set in the outback sees rival factions all vying for control of the Lawson cattle station, which is now leaderless and without an heir to inherit it. It scored positive reviews from audiences and critics, although it didn’t hit it big in the Netflix top 10s, as we’ll come onto in a second.
Anna Torv led the cast, playing Emily Lawson alongside Robert Taylor, Michael Dorman, Sam Corlett, and Philippa Northeast. The series was created by Timothy Lee and Ben Davies with Easy Tiger Productions and Ronde Media producing.

Territory begins with a death. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that not everyone in this series — about the fight for power in Australia’s unforgiving and awe-inspiring Northern Territory — makes it to the end of the finale.

In line are screwup alcoholic oldest son, Graham (Michael Dorman); Graham’s ambitious wife from a rival family, Emily (Anna Torv); Graham’s twentysomething prodigal son, Marshall (Sam Corlett); and Graham and Emily’s whipsmart teenage daughter, Susie (Philippa Northeast).

Netflix's latest Western TV drama, Territory, features a strong ensemble cast centered around the main Lawson family. Described frequently as a Yellowstone-like family epic but set in the northern regions of Australia, Territory tells the story of a power struggle following the death of Daniel Lawson, the owner of the Marianne Cattle Station. With no clear candidate set to take his place, a conflict ensues between rival cattle farmers, gangsters, mining magnates, and members of the Lawson family. Headlined by Anna Torv and Michael Dorman, the performances are undoubtedly the show's strong suit.
To construct an authentic feeling for the series, Territory's main cast is made up entirely of Australian and New Zealand-based actors. So, while there may be a handful of fresh faces for audiences watching on Netflix, there are also some familiar stars playing prevalent roles.
