Film Review: Om (1995) by Upendra

“Om” is a landmark for Kannada cinema for a number of reasons. Focusing on the presentation of Bangalore’s criminal underworld, including appearance of real-life gangsters, “Om” was a rather costly endeavor but the result definitely justified the effort. Currently, the movie is credited for ushering in the genre of underworld mafia in a full-fledged manner in Kannada cinema, was a a successful venture at the box office and was declared an industry hit. It remains a cult classic film in Kannada cinema with a dedicated fan following, owing to its re-release every two weeks, holding a record for re-releasing more than 550 times. ‘Kurukshetra’ audio release by end of this month
SandalwoodDarshan’s 50th film, ‘Kurukshetra’ is based on the Mahabharata and has the actor playing the role of Duryodhana.Digital NativeDigital NativeKurukshetra is one of the costliest films to ever be made in the history of Kannada cinema. Starring Darshan in the lead role, the film happens to be special for him as it is his 50th movie. The film is a star-studded venture with some of the leading stars of the Kannada film industry roped in to feature in it. Kurukshetra, a magnum opus based on the epic Mahabharata, has Darshan playing Duryodhana and the story is told from his perspective. Written by Jk Bharavi, the film is based on the story Gadhayuddha by Ranna. In an interaction with Toi, director Naganna said, “We have finished dubbing as well as most of the computer graphics work. Composer V Harikrishna is giving finishing touches to the music, which should be released by the end of the month.” The film has an impressive star cast, as it includes Darshan as Duryodhana around whom the story revolves, Ambareesh as Bheeshma, V Ravichandran as Krishna, Arjun Sarja as Karna, Sneha as Draupadi, Meghna Raj as Bhanumati, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan as Kunti, Nikhil Gowda as Abhimanyu, Ravishankar as Shakuni, Sonu Sood as Arjuna, P Ravishankar as Dushasana and Shashikumar as Dharmaraya, along with a host of others. Kurukshetra is bankrolled by politician and producer Munirathna under his banner Kcn Movies. Vinayaka R Hegde, spokesperson for Munirathna, told Toi, “Munirathna has multiple commitments. He is busy with the upcoming election, but as soon as it is over, his aim will be to release Kurukshetra at the earliest.” The shooting for this film began last year and a major chunk of it was shot at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, where huge sets were erected for the purpose. According to reports, the makers of Kurukshetra are planning to release it in the 2D and 3D formats. Jay Vincent will be cranking the camera and Jo Ni Harsha will be editing it. Munirathna is reportedly spending a whopping Rs 210 crore on the project. With grand sets erected for the shooting, sources say that fans can expect a visual treat. Kannada epic 'Kurukshetra' wraps up shoot in Hyderabad

The entire team has been camping for nearly 150 days in Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City, where extravagant sets have been erected. Kurukshetra is based on the Mahabharata and is said to be told entirely from Duryodhana’s point of view. Darshan plays the role of Duryodhana and this is his 50th movie in Sandalwood. Incidentally, his debut, which released in 1997, was titled Mahabharata. The movie also stars Ambarish as Bheeshma, V Ravichandran as Krishna, Arjun Sarja as Karna, Sneha as Draupadi, Meghna Raj as Bhanumati, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan as Kunti, Nikhil Gowda as Abhimanyu, Ravishankar as Shakuni, Sonu Sood as Arjuna, P Ravishankar as Dushasana and Shashikumar as Dharmaraya, along with a host of others. Kurukshetra has a whopping budget of Rs 100 crore, and is being produced by Muniratna, under his banner Kcn movies. V Harikrishna is composing the music for this venture. Jayanan Vincent is the cinematographer and Jo Ni Harsha is editing the movie. It has been reported that the team is planning to release the movie in 2D and 3D on March 9. Sources in the movie have said that fans can expect a visual treat for grand sets have erected to tell this epic story. The actors had to undergo strenuous training in order to depict the characters in the story. The first teaser of the film released in December last year, and received over 3 million views in just a few days, creating quite a buzz on the internet. The teaser focussed on the character of Abhimanyu – showing off his heroics and valour.
