If there's one new show everyone has been talking about lately, it's the new Prime Video original comedy series Overcompensating. The series debuted on May 15 and quickly found a devoted fandom who adore the characters, the sense of humor, and the vaguely nostalgic mid-2010s time period. It's an unexpected millennial delight from creator and star Benito Skinner.

Before the series premiered, and even after, there has been inescapable chatter about the Overcompensating cast being "too old" to play college students. Admittedly, the characters are played by actors in their 20s and 30s, with Skinner himself playing a college freshman at 31 and Adam Dimarco playing a college senior at 35. Some viewers haven't been able to get past it.

But as soon as you press play on the pilot, Benito Skinner, playing an 18-year-old college freshman, does not make sense. Though “Brat Summer” reigned supreme last year, we’re here to mark 2025 the year of “‘Overcompensating‘ Summer,” in homage to the latest project from creator, writer, and star Benito Skinner.

The A24– and Amazon/MGM-backed series is set to premiere on Prime Video on May 15. The series, inspired by viral star Skinner’s own university experience, follows a fictional version of Benny as he navigates his freshman year as a closeted jock. This funny and personal eight-episode series features cameos from the likes of Kyle MacLachlan, Connie Britton, Kaia Gerber, Owen Thiele, and Charli xcx, who also serves as the series’ executive music producer.

Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen is an upcoming Netflix Original horror drama series created by Haley Z. Boston, who is also an executive producer and showrunner. Haley previously worked as a writer on Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Brand New Cherry Flavor. The Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt join her as executive producers on behalf of their production, Upside Down Productions. Andrea Sperling also joins as an executive producer through her overall deal with Netflix.

Overcompensating is a new Prime Video series created by and starring Benito Skinner, who rose to fame on social media as Benny Drama. Casting director Jessica Kelly was not familiar with Benny Drama when the project came her way. Luckily, someone else in her life very much was.

"My sister is 14 years younger than me and she was constantly talking about this guy, Benny, on Instagram and his best friend, Mary Beth [Barone]. And I was like, 'Ok, Ok, Ok,'" Kelly tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors panel. "And then I was like, 'They seem cute,' but never really looked at it.
