Megan Fox Was Considered For a Major Role in This $130 Million Cult Classic Climbing Streaming Charts
Image
Megan Fox has taken on plenty of iconic roles over the years, but one film she came close to starring in has returned to streaming charts over 20 years later. Fox was one of the many names considered for the role of Karen in Mean Girls, the 2004 cult classic led by Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams. The part of Karen ultimately went to Amanda Seyfried, who almost played McAdams’ iconic Regina George. Mean Girls was released in 2004, and the film has since returned to streaming charts on Paramount+, sitting at #4 at the time of writing. Mean Girls earned a “certified fresh” 84% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 66% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It also grossed $130 million at the box office against a modest budget of only $17 million.

There were plenty of casting almosts revealed in an article last year from Entertainment Weekly, including Leighton Meester, Haylie Duff, Kate Mara, and Blake Lively...

Why Benito Skinner’s ‘Overcompensating’ Deserves an Emmy Seat — and Wally Baram, Too
Image
Every so often, a new comedy series taps into something bigger than laughs. It can connect to the awkwardness, beauty and heartbreak of becoming who you are, especially when the process is messy, loud and absolutely hilarious.

Prime Video’s coming-of-age comedy “Overcompensating” does precisely that, pairing sharp writing with an emotional core that captures the chaos of young adulthood. With a fearless ensemble, a dynamic creator-star at its center, and a pulse on today’s culture, the series deserves serious Emmy consideration.

Created by and starring Benito Skinner — who rose to prominence through viral characters on TikTok and YouTube — “Overcompensating” is loosely inspired by Skinner’s college experience. He plays Benny, a closeted former football player navigating his identity while forging a fast, complicated friendship with Carmen, a sardonic high school outsider played by Wally Baram. With chaotic encouragement from Benny’s older sister Grace (Mary Beth Barone) and...

Overcompensating and the Chaotic Truth of Being Queer in College
Mary Beth Barone and Wally Baram in Más de la cuenta (2025)
Overcompensating is a freshman fever dream in eight episodes.

It is the kind of college show that makes you laugh, cringe, and relive every bad decision from freshman year.

The ones that involve cheap alcohol, bad haircuts, and even worse judgment.

(Prime Video)

As a gay man who once faked a crush on an Ra just to survive parties, I saw myself in Benny. Except I could never have pulled off varsity football.

Benito Skinner wrote and stars in this messy coming-out fantasy.

His character, Benny, is the classic closeted football star who overachieves in every direction.

Overcompensating star defends show's age criticism: 'I get what people are saying, but...'
Image
If there's one new show everyone has been talking about lately, it's the new Prime Video original comedy series Overcompensating. The series debuted on May 15 and quickly found a devoted fandom who adore the characters, the sense of humor, and the vaguely nostalgic mid-2010s time period. It's an unexpected millennial delight from creator and star Benito Skinner.

Before the series premiered, and even after, there has been inescapable chatter about the Overcompensating cast being "too old" to play college students. Admittedly, the characters are played by actors in their 20s and 30s, with Skinner himself playing a college freshman at 31 and Adam Dimarco playing a college senior at 35. Some viewers haven't been able to get past it.

In the season 3 premiere of their podcast Ride, Skinner and co-host Mary Beth Barone, his fellow Overcompensating cast member, spoke at length about the series. Nothing was off limits as they shared...

“Nasty American Fantasy but Make It Gay”: ‘Overcompensating’ Creator Addresses the Show's Biggest Criticism
Image
The consensus is that Benito Skinner's college comedy Overcompensating is a hilarious take on the college experience through the lens of a closeted jock. Skinner plays a fictionalized version of himself, leading a cast consisting of Wally Baram, Mary Beth Barone, and Adam Dimarco, among others. While the show has received widespread acclaim with the first season holding strong on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes with a 95% critic score, there have been some aspects of the show that have received negative criticism. Many of the actors play characters significantly younger than they are, and reviews have highlighted this discrepancy. Skinner and Beth Barone addressed this criticism in an episode of their Ride podcast. "I feel like most people that create TV shows don't have a podcast they can directly respond to what's being said . . . . Why do we have to ignore that these reviews are out there," Beth Barone said while discussing the age issue.

Charli Xcx's Brand-New Coming-of-Age Comedy Is an Instant Streaming Hit
Image
The evolution of online stars into mainstream notoriety is nothing new in 2025, with the likes of Bo Burnham and Addison Rae making the switch in recent years. Another name that can now be added to this ever-growing list is Benito Skinner's, perhaps better known online by his stage name “Benny Drama," who has recently made a big streaming splash with his comedy-routine-turned-tv-show, Overcompensating, a series co-executive produced by musical sensation Charli Xcx.

After premiering on May 15, 2025, on Prime Video, the series has gained plenty of attention thanks to positive word-of-mouth from strong critical and audience reception. Because of this, as of May 20, just five days after its debut, Overcompensating has officially landed at the #1 spot in Prime's most-watched TV shows in the U.S., even finishing second in both movies and TV, with Paul Feig's long-awaited sequel, Another Simple Favor, taking top spot. ‘Overcompensating’ Team On Their “Try Everything” Mentality While Exploring The Rollercoaster Of College Life
Image
Prime Video’s Overcompensating captures the highs, the lows, and the absurdities of college life in a way creator Benito Skinner hopes will feel both very personal and very universal at the same time.

Loosely inspired by Skinner’s own experience, the eight-episode series strikes a difficult balance tonally, from laugh-out-loud funny to poignant to incredibly embarrassing and everything in between. Skinner explained that the way to do that is through experimentation.

“You try everything and see,” Skinner said during a conversation at the Deadline Studio at Prime Experience. “If any moment feels like, ‘Oh, we’re supposed to feel something different there,’ let’s pull back. I think a good example is the scene where Grace is with Janet in the sixth episode, they’re kind of having this emotional little connection, and we did have someone off camera say, ‘Is it time for me to wipe you now?...

‘Overcompensating’ Star Adam Dimarco Says Peter’s Insecurities Humanize the Ridiculous Secret Society Brother
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Overcompensating” Episode 1.

Adam Dimarco didn’t even know what a fraternity was when he stepped onto his university’s campus in Ontario. Now he’s captivating audiences as a caricature of the leader of a secret society brotherhood in Prime Video’s “Overcompensating.”

“The White Lotus” alum stars as Peter, the toxic, hyper-masculine boyfriend to Grace (Mary Beth Barone) and leader of the school’s most elite secret society Flesh & Gold. Dimarco told TheWrap the key to unlocking his inner douchebag but still making him lovable was in the series’ title.

“Every character in this show is overcompensating in their own way, so just figuring out what Peter was overcompensating about: Not coming from a wealthy family or feeling like he has to also be more ‘masculine’ to fit in,” Dimarco said.

On the surface Peter falls into the stereotypical trope of a washed...

Overcompensating on Prime Video Tries Too Hard to Make Benito Skinner Look 18 and Fails Miserably
Image
Amazon Prime Video’s newest A24-backed show, Overcompensating, was promoted as a coming-of-age comedy drama full of emotional awakenings, cringe-comedy, and campus chaos. But as soon as you press play on the pilot, Benito Skinner, playing an 18-year-old college freshman, does not make sense. While there’s no denying Skinner is a talented comedian with a remarkable social media presence, casting him as a teenager fresh out of high school might’ve been a stretch too big.

He might’ve felt like the right fit for the role to other creators of the series, but one can’t help but notice how very awkward his portrayal is. It doesn’t matter if he throws on a graphic tee or clenches his jaw; none of that will successfully mask the age gap.

Benito Skinner Says ‘Overcompensating’ Finale Cliffhanger Was Loosely Based on His Own Life
Image
Benito Skinner’s sexy college comedy “Overcompensating” ends in a heartbreaking cliffhanger – the creator, writer, executive producer and star said he always knew the first season’s ending from his first conversations with producing partner Scott King.

“Overcompensating,” Skinner’s first foray into long-form comedy, is semi-autobiographical. He stars as a closeted high-school football star Benny from Idaho, who must confront his sexuality in a way he never had to before when he goes off to college.

After a season of failed attempts, missteps with friends and countless discoveries, Benny finds himself betrayed by the person he trusts most. After a heart-to-heart with his first college kiss turned best friend Carmen (Wally Baram), he finds her kissing his campus crush Miles (Rish Shah). Moments later Carmen accidentally outs him at the party, while both his sister and his crush are within earshot.

Skinner said that this sequence of unfortunate events...

Prime Video’s New College Comedy Earns a Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Benito Skinner's comedy-routine-turned-tv-show, Overcompensating, is a hit with critics and viewers alike. Only four days after debuting on Prime Video, the show is certified fresh at 94% and 83% by viewers. There is a significant gap between critical and audience reception for the college-set comedy, but it's not big enough to tell a conflicting story. The numbers indicate that the show is being enjoyed by most viewers, giving it a great chance at scoring a second-season renewal. It's still early to know how the show is performing, but those numbers should be out soon, and maybe viewers will learn what happened after that massive cliffhanger involving Carmen (Wally Baram) and the revelation of a huge personal secret.

The eight-episode first season ensemble centers around Benny (Skinner), "a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen, a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs.

‘Overcompensating’ Stars on the Show’s ‘Nostalgic World of Americana College Hell’ and Plans for Potential Season 2: ‘More Unhinged and Insane’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article includes spoilers about “Overcompensating,” now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

When making his first series, “Overcompensating,” Benito Skinner wanted to channel the spirit of all his favorite movies and TV shows growing up: “Freaks and Geeks,” “American Pie,” “Clueless,” “Mean Girls” and even “The Real World.”

“All of these things helped me create this nostalgic world of Americana college hell,” Skinner tells Variety of the eight-episode series, which follows Benny (Skinner), a former high school jock who starts to explore coming out of the closet when he goes to university. As evidenced by the main character’s name, “Overcompensating” is somewhat autobiographical.

“The inspiration was definitely my life,” Skinner says, noting that the series started off as a live show in 2019. “It’s stories of me being in and out of the closet and my experience doing so much to be loved and accepted.”

Overcompensating star reveals 'daddy' dream casting for possible season 2

Overcompensating made its premiere on Prime Video on May 15, and it's easily one of the downright funniest and overall best new shows of the year. The raunchy comedy series takes place at the fictional Yates University, where closeted freshman Benny (Benito Skinner) overcompensates his way into denying his truth and remaining in the closet. Obviously, that doesn't work.

The series features an excellent ensemble cast surrounding Skinner in the leading role, including Mary Beth Barone as Benny's sister Grace, Wally Baram as his love interest-turned-best friend Carmen, Adam Dimarco as Grace's frat bro boyfriend Peter, Holmes as Carmen's wild roommate Hailee, and Rish Shah as Benny's crush Miles. Overcompensating also welcomes guest stars like Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan, James Van Der Beek, Charli Xcx, and Megan Fox (as Benny's imaginary poster-girl confidante).

Benito Skinner on ‘Overcompensating’ Inspirations and How His Kardashian Parodies Helped Him Write for TV

After years of social media stardom, Benito Skinner is making the jump to TV.

Skinner, known for his online persona Benny Drama, is the creator and star of Overcompensating, Prime Video’s new comedy that is loosely based on his life and follows Benny, a football player, in college as he struggles to accept his sexuality. The comedian is famous for his viral skits and celebrity impressions, particularly his spoofs of the Kardashians where he expertly plays every member of the family.

How Benito Skinner Brought the Best of TikTok to ‘Overcompensating’: ‘This Cast Kind of Goes Crazy’
Image
Despite the Britney Spears music cue to start the show, it’s not luck that landed Benito Skinner — aka Benny Drama — his very own Prime Video comedy series. Still, the “Overcompensating” creator, star and executive producer feels very lucky to have assembled such an all-star cast, all of whom shined on the yellow carpet at the Palladium Theater premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

“I just approached it by picking whoever was perfect for the role. If you make me laugh on my phone, I want you in it, I want friends in it, comedians I’m obsessed with who haven’t gotten their platform to shine, just people I love so much. Whether they’re from the Internet or not, let’s put the funniest people in this,” he told TheWrap. “Whatever I did, I’ll do it again. This is insane, I’m so lucky.”

‘Overcompensating’ Review: Benito Skinner’s Basic College Comedy Works Well Enough Where It Counts
Image
Every generation gets their own raucous college comedy, and whether yours is “Animal House” (1978) or “Van Wilder” (2002), “School Daze” (1988) or “22 Jump Street” (2014), “Legally Blonde” (2001) or “Everybody Wants Some!” (released 2016 but set in 1980), you’ll recognize plenty of each in Benito Skinner’s Amazon Prime Video series, “Overcompensating.”

Although it’s unclear what generation the 31-year-old Skinner is meant to be representing when his modern-day freshmen profuse their love for decade-old pop culture like “Glee” (2009-2015), the “Twilight” films (2008-2012), and Nicki Minaj’s 2011 banger, “Super Bass” — while still selling their souls for to see Charli Xcx (an executive producer on the series) — the first season’s emphasis on universal elements, like hormone-induced comic hysteria and early-adult edification, prove endearing enough to overcome nagging failures of overfamiliarity and nostalgic imprecision.

At his Idaho high school, Benny (Skinner) is the golden boy: star quarterback on the football team, class valedictorian, and Homecoming king.

Benito Skinner’s ‘Overcompensating’ Is a College Coming Out Story That Plays It Entirely Too Straight: TV Review
Image
For comedians who came up on social media — or really, all comedians — getting a TV show is both a dream and a potential trap. With a series order comes a paycheck and validation from mainstream institutions. But it also saddles performers accustomed to trading in short, heightened bits with a need to craft long-term narratives with a gravitational center. In these situations, the path of least resistance is to cast oneself as the straight man: the steady one in a sea of eccentric personalities free from having to carry the show themselves. Which is a problem when your whole show is about not being straight.

The comedian Benito Skinner is known as @bennydrama7 on TikTok and Instagram, where he posts videos in character as a nosy hairstylist, a chaotic wedding planner, a nightmarish son-in-law and other personae that often involve elaborate costumes. On his ascent through the entertainment industry, Skinner...

‘Overcompensating’: A Closeted Golden Boy Tries to Play It Straight

At an orientation meeting on his first day of college, Benny is told, “You can be whoever you want to be here!” This is exactly what Benny wants — if only he can figure out who he wants to be. In high school, he was the star of the football team and the golden boy of his small Idaho town. But he was also deep in the closet — so deep that even in college, he can’t fully admit to himself that he’s gay.

This is the central tension of Overcompensating,...

Flavored vodka, fake IDs, and identity crises -- how to stream 'Overcompensating'
Image
Benito Skinner’s new comedy series hits Prime Video with all eight episodes Thursday, May 15.

Toxic dorm parties, flavored vodka, and fake IDs? Yeah, “Overcompensating” gets it. Created by Benito Skinner (who also stars), this new coming-of-age comedy drops us into the messy, chaotic world of college life — with all its drama, denial, and disastrous hookups. The New Sex Comedy ‘Overcompensating’ Is A Late 20th Century Throwback in the Most Satisfying Possible Way
Image
Last week, The Discourse spent a couple of days being dominated by a New York magazine article with a title as stark as it was alarming: “Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College.” It turns out A.I. tools make it so easy for students to let robots write their papers that any moral qualms they might have about it go flying out the window. But before you fall into a terror spiral about future bridges you may want to drive on being designed by engineers who got their degrees thanks to ChatGPT, consider soothing your nerves with a college sitcom in which no one is using A.I. to plagiarize their homework because homework barely comes up at all.

Overcompensating may be set in the present day and revolve around a closeted queer kid, but it’s a late 20th century throwback in the most satisfying possible way.

‘Overcompensating’ Review: Benito Skinner’s Amazon Coming-of-Age Comedy Delivers College Hijinks with Laughter and Heart
Image
It’s been several years since I graduated from college, so I’m unqualified to say with certainty whether or not it’s a regular occurrence for today’s savvy students to bond over their love of Ashlee Simpson, whose last album came out before some of them were born.

This unexpected celebration of the “Pieces of Me” auteur is one of several moments in Benito Skinner’s new Amazon comedy Overcompensating that feel not exactly “wrong,” but more appropriate for juvenile millennials than Zoomers. Almost every pop culture reference in Overcompensating, including extended nods to Twilight, Glee and the reappropriated Megan Fox classic Jennifer’s Body, comes across, at best, as a thing that the main characters might have discovered from their much older siblings. Or parents.

It all fits because the cast of Overcompensating projects, top to bottom, as several years older than the characters they’re playing, a...

How ‘Overcompensating’ cast one of its writers as its co-lead
Image
Overcompensating is a new Prime Video series created by and starring Benito Skinner, who rose to fame on social media as Benny Drama. Casting director Jessica Kelly was not familiar with Benny Drama when the project came her way. Luckily, someone else in her life very much was.

"My sister is 14 years younger than me and she was constantly talking about this guy, Benny, on Instagram and his best friend, Mary Beth [Barone]. And I was like, 'Ok, Ok, Ok,'" Kelly tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Casting Directors panel. "And then I was like, 'They seem cute,' but never really looked at it. And I had seen Mary Beth actually more — her stand-up would show up on my feed. And then I got this email about his new show and then I was like, 'My God, I'm going to be the coolest older sister ever.'"

The comedy series,...

As Kelsea Ballerini flexes her acting muscle, she’s opening up about the rejection she’s faced in Hollywood.

The 5x Grammy-nominated country artist recently praised Haley Lu Richardson‘s performance as Tanya’s (Jennifer Coolidge) assistant Portia in Season 2 of HBO‘s The White Lotus after she auditioned for the same role.

She said Richardson played the part “so brilliantly and beautifully,” adding: “But yeah, I did audition for that. Fun fact.”

Set in Sicily, Season 2 of Mike White’s anthology series saw Portia accompany her heiress boss on vacation, where she meets the mysterious Jack (Leo Woodall), while Tanya is swept off her feet by a group of jet-setting gay men with ulterior motives.

All 3 of The White Lotus seasons ranked from worst to best
Image
The White Lotus, created by Mike White, is the hottest show in the world right now! The third season of the hit HBO series just came to an end in April 2025, four years after the series premiered in the summer of 2021.

The White Lotus is already coming back for season 4, and probably more seasons, honestly. There doesn't seem to be anything stopping this show from becoming an all-time great drama-comedy series.

To celebrate the greatness of this show, I ranked all three seasons of The White Lotus so far. Honestly, there is no "worst" season of this show. They are all good, but there's definitely one show that stands apart from the rest.

The Action-Packed ‘White Lotus’ Finale Proved Aimee Lou Wood Is Its Breakout Star
Image
Spoiler Alert: This review contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of “The White Lotus,” now streaming on Max.

“Stop worrying about the love you didn’t get,” Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) told her partner Rick (Walton Goggins), in one of their final moments together on the just-concluded season of “The White Lotus.” She went on: “Think about the love you have. I love you. I’m right here.”

This was an attempt to pull Rick back from the brink; consumed by his own rage at once again recalling his difficult childhood, Rick went to a place where, sometimes, Chelsea could find and recover him. And it was a statement of purpose for a sometimes-wobbly season of television that mainly stuck the landing: In this iteration of “The White Lotus,” we had to sometimes stop worrying about what we weren’t provided. Because the bright spots, like Wood’s incandescent performance,...
