Netflix Confirms 'One Piece' Season 3 Renewal and Production Start Amid Season 2 Anticipation
Image
This weekend, Japan is celebrating One Piece day. The event is unveiling all kinds of news about the future of the franchise, so Netflix took the opportunity to make a huge announcement to fans all over the world (even though Season 2 star Joe Manganielloall but confirmed this a few months ago). The streamer officially confirmed that the hit series is returning for Season 3. Production of the new season is set to start in Cape Town later this year. Season 2 of the series is slated to premiere in 2026.

The announcement may suggest that Netflix wants to fast-track the production in such a way that fans don't have to wait too long for new episodes. Season 2 will premiere almost 3 years after the debut of season 1. This doesn't mean, however, that season 3 will come as fast as fans would like— due to its numerous special and practical effects, the show takes a long time to finalize during post-production.

‘One Piece’ Grabs Early Season 3 Renewal at Netflix
Jeff Ward, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero, Taz Skylar, and Iñaki Godoy in One Piece (2023)
Netflix will keep sailing the high seas.

The streamer has given an early season three renewal to its live-action adaptation of One Piece, announcing the pickup at an annual celebration of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga in Tokyo. The renewal comes several months ahead of the season two premiere, which is slated for 2026. That, incidentally, is much sooner than the season two renewal for One Piece, which came a couple weeks after the series premiere in 2023.

Additionally, Netflix announced that Ian Stokes will join Joe Tracz as co-showrunner on season three, which is set to begin filming later this year. Stokes wrote two episodes and was a co-executive producer of season one. Former co-showrunner Matt Owens departed the show in March; he and Tracz were co-showrunners on the second season, while Owens and Steven Maeda ran the first season.

Along with the renewal announcement, Netflix released a teaser for season...

Netflix's live-action One Pieceadaptation loses its showrunner.

Per Deadline, One Piece developer and showrunner Matt Owens has officially stepped away from the series following the conclusion of production on its second season. Owens explained the decision via a social media post in which he wrote, "The last six years working on the live-action One Piece have been a life-changing journey. A dream come true. It’s also been A Lot. So I'm stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health."

'One Piece' Suffers Another Major Loss Ahead of Season 2 for Netflix
Image
Another of the main creative forces behind Netflix's One Piece live-action adaptation is jumping off the Going Merry after Season 2 wrapped production. Matt Owens, who originally co-created and served as co-showrunner on the series with Steven Maeda has decided to step back to focus on his mental health. With his decision announced on Instagram, the main creative duo who spearheaded the effort at Netflix to adapt Eiichirô Oda's long-running manga is no longer involved, or, at the very least, is no longer calling the shots. Only Percy Jackson and the Olympians writer and co-executive producer Joe Tracz remains as showrunner for post-production after he took over for Maeda last April.

Owens has arguably been the mastermind behind One Piece, not only shaping the first two seasons but also laying out how the future would look for the show as it continued to adapt more of the manga. He's...

With a paintbrush, a bow, and hair that hits like a hurricane, things are about to get... strange. ðŸ´â€â˜ ï¸ ðŸŒŠ pic.twitter.com/gxz3ZWOhyo— One Piece(ワンピース) Netflix (@onepiecenetflix) January 14, 2025

Official Trailer for 'Justice Served' South African Series from Netflix
Best Actor SA Indie Film Festival 2024
"We live in the shadows, and today we come into the light... Your justice belongs to privileged elite, but we're going to change that." Great speech to kick off this intense thriller. Netflix has revealed a trailer for Justice Served, an intense South African series about a hi-jacking at a court house intended as a form of activism against the wealthy elite. Here's the pitch: An enigmatic Freedom Fighter, and his followers, who have a secret agenda, hi-jack a courthouse to let the public decide if the murder accused should be executed, setting the world on fire, and throwing the lives of everyday people into chaos. Sounds pretty damn cool, right? The series stars Hlomla Dandala, Morné Visser, Pallance Dladla, Alex McGregor, Lerato Mvelase, Dineo Rasedile, Panch Gasela, and Anton Jeftha. This is a very short trailer with very fast flashes of footage, but I dig the look of the...

‘Eraser: Reborn’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Dominic Sherwood, Jacky Lai, McKinley Belcher III, Kai Luke Brummer, Eddie Ramos, Mampho Brescia, Soyama Mbashe, Tamer Burjaq, Nathan Castle, Rizelle Januk, Anton David Jeftha | Written by Michael D. Weiss | Directed by John Pogue

Talk about reviving a franchise from the grave! Twenty-six years (26!) after Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1996 action film Eraser comes a franchise reboot featuring none of the original cast and with two veterans of franchise reboots and Dtv sequels at the helm, director John Pogue and writer Michael D. Weiss. Yet whilst both filmmakers have experience in reboots and sequels they also have some other fantastic movies under their belts – Pogue wrote all Three of The Skulls movies (the second being a personal favourite) and Weiss penned some classic Dtv movies that went on to be staples of the early days of budget DVDs – Octopus and it’s sequel, Crocodile and US Seals 2… Yes, Eraser: Reborn has quite the pedigree.
