There’s no doubt that Adolescence is a massive success. What started as a pitch for another “one-take” concept, following the success of Boiling Point, has quickly turned into a cultural phenomenon and international hit.
So, what is behind the new Netflix show’s meteoric rise? Is it the concept, or just a fad? Perhaps it really is just great “drama.”
I had the pleasure of talking to some of the talented creatives behind Philip Barantini’s latest hit, Adolescence, last week. I started by chatting with Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty. The buildup to the interviews can be a slightly nerve-wracking experience as you wait silently in a bustling hotel corridor in London, with teams of PR and personnel spread across many rooms, before being thrust into the lights and cameras where your interviewees are waiting. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are each preparing new documentaries on the murder of Rachel Nickell, the British woman who was killed on Wimbledon Common in July 1992. The case, which was marred by a flawed police investigation, continues to draw interest from filmmakers and true crime audiences.
Netflix has commissioned a three-part series with the working title Wimbledon Common, produced by Blast! Films, the company behind Tsunami: Race Against Time. The series has been in production for several months and is expected to combine documentary elements with dramatized sequences to explore the murder and the investigation’s failures. Netflix has not commented on the project.
Amazon Prime Video has acquired the UK rights to The Wimbledon Killer, a two-part documentary produced by Blink Films. One of the first rules Neil Cross gave his team when making Iris, the new thriller series he created for Sky U.K., was that the lead character should never drive a car with a roof. “If Grace Kelly wouldn’t drive it, neither should Iris,” says Cross, laughing.
After spending years in the grime of East London making Luther, the dark cop drama starring Idris Elba as a homicide detective with some very nasty personal demons, Cross was ready for something light and sunny. With Iris, which “to create a different kind of show… something my wife and I could enjoy with a glass of wine on the sofa.”
Iris exchanges Luther‘s cold and cloudy London for a sun-drenched Italian countryside — the show was shot largely in Sardina — and takes inspiration from the British spy and adventure shows of Cross’ youth, think The Saint or The Persuaders!, for its chase thriller plot line.

Fremantle is readying to unleash ‘Sandokan’ onto industry insiders during next week’s London TV Screenings.
“It’s simply a great epic adventure, based on a known IP. It’s ‘Poldark’ meets ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’,” enthuses CEO Commercial and International Jens Richter, promising action, adventure and some good old-fashioned pirating.
Starring Can Yaman (“Daydreamer”), Ed Westwick (“Gossip Girl”) and John Hannah (“Spartacus: Blood and Sand”), it’s based on the series of novels by Emilio Salgari and produced by Fremantle’s Italian content powerhouse Lux Vide. Set in the mid-1800s, it heads to a place inhabited by native Dayak tribes yet dominated by British law. Sandokan is used to fighting for his survival, but one thing catches him by surprise: love.
“There’s a portion of romance,” admits Richter. With each episode set in a different environment, “Sandokan” will “fit the needs of the market perfectly,” he adds.

At its core, “Playing Nice” deals with a disturbing idea: the scary truth of identities being switched at birth. Despite being sensational, this narrative device reflects viewers’ fears about parenthood and belonging. When Maddie and Pete find out that Theo is not their biological child, they are shocked, and their ideal family is shattered.
This puts them in a maze of moral and emotional problems. With a situation where love is called into question and identity is suddenly malleable, the series skillfully highlights the fragility of familial ties. We see the couple’s confusion as they try to figure out what this new information means, which reflects the larger societal fight with identity in a world that is getting more complicated.
As Miles and Lucy, the other couple caught up in this complicated web of parenthood, are presented to the audience, the plot becomes more complex. Their showing up at...

Things get very tense in the second episode of ITV’s new miniseries. Here’s our Playing Nice episode 2 review.
Episode 1 of Playing Nice ended on the shocking revelation that Miles and Lucy (James McArdle and Jessica Brown Findlay) had filed a lawsuit to try and claim the custody of both Theo and David, the two boys swapped at the hospital as babies. Naturally, this has caused some tension and stress for Pete and Maddie (James Norton and Niamh Algar) as we meet them at the beginning of episode 2.
Pete and Maddie find out the lawsuit was filed eight weeks ago, meaning all the couple’s nice gestures were to manipulate them. In episode 1, Miles and Pete were bonding as a couple of guys, slapping each others’ backs a lot, but that’s all now gone. In fact, Miles is trying to manipulate Theo into thinking Miles is his real daddy.

ITV’s new mini series Playing Nice, starring James Norton and Niamh Algar, has been scheduled for 5th January. More on it below.
Playing Nice, ITV’s latest big drama series, plays with every parent’s worst nightmare. What if my kid was swapped at the hospital? The four part series stars James Norton and Niamh Algar as parents who find out they left the hospital with the wrong baby years ago. As they meet the parents of their biological son, things start going sideways as they so often do in these things.
Here’s a much more eloquent synopsis: Living a waking nightmare, Pete (James Norton) and Maddie (Niamh Algar) are jettisoned into the world of the other couple; Miles (James McArdle) and Lucy (Jessica Brown Findlay). At first it seems all four are agreed on a solution, but it soon becomes clear that hidden motives are at play.

The plight of unhoused people and the growing epidemic of elderly loneliness and disability hardship are at the center of Tj O’Grady Peyton’s Room Taken. The short film, written by Michael Whelan and executive produced by Colin Farrell, centers on Isaac (Gabriel Adewusi), a newly arrived immigrant to Ireland from Nigeria who struggles to find a stable place to lay his head. He then comes across Victoria (Brid Brennan), a recently widowed elderly blind woman who lives alone and takes the opportunity to secretly stay at her home unnoticed as he awaits news of better accommodations.
In its 17-minute runtime, Room Taken navigates humanist themes such as the hardship faced by asylum seekers and the lack of proper services for the unhoused population in Ireland. It also includes themes of grief and isolation for elderly citizens as they suffer the loss of their partners or experience an onset of disability from aging.

When Tom Hollander took on the role of Truman Capote in Season 2 of Ryan Murphy’s Anthology Series, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, it wasn’t the first time he’d contemplated playing the famously acerbic New York writer—some years ago he had auditioned for a different version of the role. Now, in portraying Capote’s complex and self-destructive spiral into alcoholism and isolation, written by Jon Robin Baitz, Hollander describes an experience so profoundly immersive that he himself has not yet been able to watch it. Speaking from Rome where he is currently shooting Iris—the upcoming drama series from Luther creator Neil Cross—Hollander explains his process for Feud and the impact of embodying a gay man with the courage to live out and proud in an unaccepting society.

In the third episode of the Starz limited series “Mary & George,” Julianne Moore’s Mary, Countess of Buckingham, who is hell-bent on amassing power among the royal ranks, makes her first visit to the court of King James I (Tony Curran). When she arrives in a garish purple silk gown, her face painted a ghastly white and cheeks crudely rouged like a clown, the courtiers point and laugh. Absorbing their scornful looks, she makes her way to Lady Hatton, a formidable adversary played by Nicola Walker, who quips, “Who dressed you? A prostitute?”
Well, yes, in fact.
Nicola Walker (center) (Starz)
In an earlier scene, we see Mary’s sex worker confidante Sandie (Niamh Algar) help her get into costume. Mary is no fool. Though it’s never spelled out explicitly, it is strongly suggested that she plotted her fashion faux pas to attract the attention of the king...

Julianne Moore seems to be having a blast in limited series “Mary & George” (Starz). But carrying a seven-part period royal dramedy is not easy. The Oscar-winning film actress (“Still Alice”) rarely does television (“Lisey’s Story”) — she started her career as a regular on “As the World Turns” — but Mary Villiers, the Machiavellian court-scheming mother of the series, was irresistible.
Moore was attracted to showrunner D.C. Moore’s scripts, she said during a recent interview with IndieWire over Zoom. “That very first scene where you find her giving birth to this child and saying, ‘Why should I keep you? Your life’s gonna be worthless?’ was arresting,” Moore said.
“The character leapt off the page,” she continued. “This person who didn’t seem to have any kind of filter at all. She speaks everything that she’s feeling, which is unusual. It had this tone to it that was almost comedic at times,...

[This story contains spoilers from the series finale of Mary & George.]
Nicholas Galitzine likens the story of George Villiers — the dashing Duke of Buckingham he plays in Mary & George, based on the real-life lover of King James I of England — to that of Icarus, the Greek mythological character whose unbridled ego and ambition led to his untimely end.
Across seven episodes of the bawdy and soapy Starz period drama, George transforms, under the tutelage of his cunning mother Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), from a callow young adult into the de facto ruler of England, who uses his close connection to the mercurial monarch (Tony Curran) to advance his own political agenda.
In the series finale, George’s insatiable lust for power reaches a point of no return. After negotiations break down in the proposed marriage between James’ son, Prince Charles (Samuel Blenkin), and Infanta Maria Anna of Spain over Charles’ refusal to convert from Protestantism to Catholicism, George...

“I had heard things about King James being gay, or, you know, sleeping with men, because gay is not a term that they would have used [at the time],” said D.C. Moore about the genesis of Starz’s lavish historical drama, Mary & George. However, the creator of the limited series never fully grasped the full scale of the king’s interactions until he was handed author Benjamin Woolley’s compelling book, The King’s Assassin. The tone so perfectly captured the mood of the early 16th century and how the eccentric king engaged in many a folly while also trying to maintain peace and his political status.
