Hugh Grant has joined the chorus calling for a police investigation into criminality at News Group Newspapers (Ngn) following this week’s high-profile settlement and apology with Prince Harry.

Appearing on the BBC’s Today program this morning, the BAFTA-winning star and Board Director of the Hacked Off campaign group said the “aim” of Harry’s initial case and of Grant’s own 2024 case against Ngn had been to spark a “new criminal investigation” against Ngn, but both had fallen foul of the UK civil courts legal system.

He said the job was not done “by any means” since the Harry settlement, coming after Harry’s lawyer David Sherborne said the Prince and fellow complainant Tom Watson “join others in calling for the police and Parliament to investigate not only the unlawful activity now finally admitted [by Ngn], but the perjury and cover ups along the way.”

Gross box office in the European Union (EU) and the U.K. grew by 70% in 2022 compared with 2021 – from €3 billion ($3.27 billion) to €5.1 billion ($5.57 billion), down by 28% on pre-pandemic levels. The numbers were revealed in the 2023 edition of Focus – World Film Market Trends, a report which is prepared each year for the Cannes film market.

Three U.S. films, “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru” topped the European charts in 2022, selling 34.4 million, 30.6 and 30.2 million tickets throughout the calendar year respectively. Cinema attendance in the EU and the U.K. increased by 63% from 403 million tickets sold in 2021 to an estimated 657 million in 2022, representing 67% of the average pre-pandemic admission level registered between 2017 and 2019.

European films also performed well and market share for European films increased year-on-year from 26.8% to 28.4% in 2022, the report recorded. It also notes that film production in the EU and the U.

After Vikings, this story of Saxons and Vikings was a success in its serial format and now it comes as a two-hour episode that can be watched independently, but that you will enjoy much more if you are fans of the excellent TV series.

There's lots of great stuff hitting streaming this week, but the debut of the Netflix film "Seven Kings Must Die" and the return of HBO Max's fourth season of "Titans" are two guaranteed to deliver high-intensity action. Fans looking to pair brutal historical epics with their watch of "Seven Kings Must Die" need to look no further than Robert Egger's Shakespearean Viking epic "The Northman" on Prime Video or Neil Marshall's Romans-vs-Picts action-adventure film "The Centurion," available on more than half a dozen streaming services. For those looking for something less bloody and closer tied to "Titans," there's always the Superman origin story series "Smallville," streaming on Hulu, or if you want to get really vintage, there's the young adult shapeshifting series "Animorphs," streaming on Prime Video. There's no shortage of action and adventure available on streaming this week, so let's get to it. 

Seven Kings Must Die...

The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die sees many fan favorite cast members return for the Netflix movie as Uhtred Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon) is caught up in another war thanks to new characters attempting to take the crown. Based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die will serve as an epilogue to the hit Netflix series, which followed the life of Uhtred Bebbanburg as he tried to help Alfred the Great (David Dawson) unify the Saxon Kingdoms while also fighting for his birthright. Uhtred also found himself in a moral quandary as his loyalties to both the Saxons and Danes were tested regularly.

Given that The Last Kingdom timeline covered a 45-year period, it didn't come as a surprise to see many cast members exit the series since several of them did have to leave for the sake of the story or be recast to portray older versions.

After it was announced that Uhtred Bebbanburg's story would be concluded in the movie, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, Netflix have revealed details about the cast and story, and released the trailer. Based on Bernard Cornwell's novels, The Last Kingdom follows the life of Uhtred, an Anglo-Saxon nobleman, who finds himself trying to reclaim his birthright after he was taken and raised by Danes when he was young. While Uhtred would do anything to protect his "new family", his loyalties to them are tested as he begins to reconnect with his roots and help King Alfred (David Dawson) with his dream to unite all kingdoms under one ruler.

Ulrika Jonsson has said she would not report her rape if it happened today because she feels “deeply uneasy” about the police.

The TV presenter – best known for Gladiators and Shooting Stars – criticised the standards of policing in the UK for having “an indifference about women and their safety”.

In her 2002 memoir, Jonsson, 55, divulged that she had been raped when she was 20 years old and beginning her career as a weather presenter.

Jonsson said that she did not report the assault at the time because she did not think she would be believed since she knew the rapist.

In her recent column for The Sun, she explained that there “was no such crime as date rape” at the time.

“Society had taught me that I – as a woman – was culpable for finding myself alone in a room with a man,” she wrote. “I lived with that guilt and felt it for decades.

2023 is going to be a year of long-awaited drama treats on UK TV. There’s the Luther film finally arriving on Netflix in March, Unforgotten is back after that Series 4 finale in 2021, and we’re getting the second season of Good Omens that has had the shows’ many enthusiastic fans on the edge of their seats for two years.

There are even whispers of a Line of Duty return, although Martin Compston has said that nothing is confirmed, so we’re not exclaiming ‘Jesus, Mary and Joseph and the wee donkey!’ just yet.

It’s also a year of dramatic goodbyes: Happy Valley returned for its third and final series on New Year’s Day, Endeavour will wrap up after over a decade of detective work, and 2023 might also squeeze in the sixth and final season of The Crown.

Netflix has released its trailer and key art for The Witcher: Blood Origin at the Ccxp event in Brazil, also revealing that Joey Batey will star as Jaskier in the four-part series. It will bow on Sunday, December 25.

Set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of The Witcher, Blood Origin will tell the tale of the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal conjunction of the spheres, when the world of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

Sophia Brown and Laurence O’Fuarain play Éile and Fjall, two warriors estranged from their opposing clans, Michelle Yeoh takes the role of Scían, a sword master, the last of her tribe, Mirren Mack is Princess Merwyn, Lenny Henry plays Chief Sage Balor, and Minnie Driver stars as a Seanchaí. Francesca Mills is Meldof, Zach Wyatt and Lizzie Annis are celestial twin sages Syndril and Zacaré.

Netflix has unveiled the full-length trailer for The Witcher spinoff Blood Origin.

The footage dropped Saturday at Brazil Comic Con, and fans were introduced to a prequel set 1,200 years before the events of the original Netflix series.

The moment that will likely get everyone talking is the arrival of Joey Batey as Jaskier in the closing moments.

It's a big moment and suggests Jaskier will play a pivotal role in telling everyone about the events of the troubling time before humans existed in the Witcher universe.

By the looks of this trailer the show is a bit more action/martial arts-heavy than the Henry Cavill-fronted original series, but it also looks to offer up answers to big questions posed in “The Witcher” – namely what in the world are those monoliths and what do they do.

Actress Shruti Haasan has already begun shooting for her international project, ‘The Eye’, directed by Daphne Schmon and written by Emily Carlton.

The film, backed by Fingerprint Content, is being co-produced by Agronauts productions, Greece’s biggest and most established production house.

Shruti has already begun shooting for the film in Athens and Corfu.

After proving her mettle in industries across India, the actress has been making waves internationally with her debut in ‘Treadstone’, her independent music, and is meticulously choosing subjects close to her heart – those which can create an impact across the globe.

Sources said that ‘The Eye’ is a psychological thriller that follows the story of a widow who returns to a greek island to spread her deceased husband’s ashes.

Apart from Shruti, the film boasts of a stellar starcast with names like Mark Rowley(‘The Last Kingdom’, ‘One Day’), Anna Savva (‘True Horror’) and Linda Marlowe (‘The Duchess’) among others.

Production has begun on the psychological thriller The Eye, starring Shruti Haasan (Salaar) and Mark Rowley (The Last Kingdom) from Fingerprint Content.

Daphne Schmon directs the flick from a screenplay by Emily Carlton. Set in 1980, the pic is billed as a dark psychological thriller. The story centers on a young widow who travels back to the island where her husband died, to spread his ashes. Upon learning the true nature of what may have claimed his life, she is tempted by a dark choice that could bring him back.

The cast is rounded out by Sarika Thakur (Baar Baar Dekho), Anna Savva (The Durrells), Linda Marlowe (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), and Christos Stergioglou (Dogtooth).

Greek production company Argonauts Productions is a co-producer on the project alongside Fingerprint. Shooting stars in Athens and Corfu later this month.

FX has released the first trailer for the fifth and final season of “Better Things,” its original comedy series created by, executive produced by and starring Pamela Adlon.

Adlon stars as Sam, a working actress raising three daughters in Los Angeles attempting to navigate her life and find fulfillment. Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood and Olivia Edward portray Sam’s daughter, who are each struggling to come of age, while Celia Imrie portrays Sam’s mother, who deals with increasingly difficult mental and physical health issues. Uhtred of Bebbanburg and his adventures are coming to an end with year five. The Netflix historical drama series, The Last Kingdom, is coming to a close so, there won't be a sixth season. The streaming service hasn't announced a release date for the final installments as yet.

Deadline is reporting that the streamer has announced the upcoming fifth season.

Alexander Dreymon, who plays Saxon warrior Uhtred of Bebbanburg, said in a statement, “Playing Uhtred for five seasons has been a wonderful journey.”

Added EP Nigel Marchant: “With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.”

News of the conclusion means that Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novel series will not be fully adapted since the fifth season is said to be based on the ninth and tenth books in the 13-pear series.

The good news for fans is that the final season is currently in production, so there should be some semblance of a conclusion when it's all said and done.
