Shazad Latif's Nautilus Will Air In The US Nearly Two Years After Disney+ Passed On The Series
Image
The nautical fantasy series Nautilus, a ten-episode Paramount production originally intended for Disney+ in 2023, has found a new home and will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on June 29th.

The fact that all episodes of the ambitious and visually rich series had already wrapped filming made Disney+'s subsequent decision all the more noteworthy when they opted not to release it.

This move, reportedly driven by evolving strategic objectives within the streaming service and a directive to reduce overall expenditures, had a ripple effect across several projects in development or completion.

Alongside Nautilus, this change in direction also resulted in the unexpected vaulting of the Willow series and the cancelation of The Spiderwick Chronicles, leaving creators and audiences alike surprised and disappointed by the platform's change of course.

Following a U.K. debut on Prime Video in October 2024, Nautilus has now been picked up by AMC and AMC+, finally bringing...

It will also stream on Prime in the UK and Ireland and on Stan in Australia. Nautilus had already finished shooting when Disney dropped the series as a cost-cutting measure. As stated by CFO Christine McCarthy, “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation…As a result, we will be removing certain content from our streaming platforms, and currently expect to take an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 to $1.8 billion.” Nautilus has now unleashed a new trailer courtesy of Prime Video, by way of Deadline.

The description reads, “Based on Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Nautilus tells the origin...

‘Sleeping Dogs’ Review
Image
Stars: Russell Crowe, Kelly Greyson, Pacharo Mzembe, Marton Csokas, Tommy Flanagan, Karen Gillan | Written by Adam Cooper, Bill Collage | Directed by Adam Cooper

Based on E.O. Chirovici’s novel The Book of Mirrors, Sleeping Dogs opens with a look at Roy Freeman and his apartment. It’s an apartment with notes taped everywhere, even on the TV Dinner he’s about to cook. They’re reminders, meant to help him cope with his Alzheimer’s while an experimental treatment he opted for starts to work. Neither the operation nor the notes prevented him from microwaving the TV remote, however.

He’s contacted by Emily Dietz from Project Clean Hands, a group devoted to freeing the wrongly convicted. They’re interested in the case of Isaac Samuel a death row inmate Freeman arrested and helped convict for the brutal murder of college professor Joseph Wieder.

I think they missed a great...

‘Sleeping Dogs’ Review: Russell Crowe Plays an Ex-Cop with Alzheimer’s in a Scrappy Piece of Dementia Noir
Image
“Sleeping Dogs,” starring Russell Crowe as a retired cop with Alzheimer’s disease, is a half-rusted scrap heap of a detective mystery. It’s patchy, it’s badly lit, it’s glum, it’s overloaded with suspects, and it’s almost proud of its contrivances. Yet in its logy, booby-trapped way, it keeps you watching.

Crowe, with a white beard and shaved head that make him look like Santa Claus as a melancholy biker, plays Roy Freeman, who was forced to turn in his badge after he caused a drunk-driving accident. Now, he’s in the thick of serious midstage dementia; he has written labels on masking tape and plastered them around his apartment, so that he’ll be reminded of everything from his own name to where the hot water is. The gloss on “Memento” is obvious enough, but it’s also a coincidence that the film is being...

Sleeping Dogs Review: A Meandering Whodunit That Wastes Talented Actors
Image
Sleeping Dogs' story lacks originality, borrowing too heavily from other successful crime thrillers, namely Memento. The good actors are given stock characters and are unable to shine due to stilted writing. The movie fails to deliver a clear message or point, making it difficult for viewers to connect with the story.

The clichés are all too apparent in Sleeping Dogs, Adam Cooper’s directorial debut. Russell Crowe stars as Roy Freeman, an ex-homicide detective who has forgotten most of his life due to Alzheimer's. While participating in a clinical trial to treat the disease, Roy finds himself pulled back into an old case when non-profit lawyer Emily Dietz (Kelly Graysen) contacts him on behalf of the alleged murderer Isaac Samuel (Pacharo Mzembe), who is set to be executed in a month. While a few of the actors give decent performances, it is not enough to overcome the stilted writing.

‘Sleeping Dogs’ Review: Russell Crowe Plays an Ex-Cop With Dementia in a Tedious Thriller
Image
You know you’re getting old when your favorite movie stars are starting to play characters afflicted with dementia. Arriving shortly on the heels of Knox Goes Away, featuring Michael Keaton as a hitman suffering from the condition, is Adam Cooper’s neo-noir thriller starring Russell Crowe as an ex-cop whose mental condition has deteriorated so dramatically that he’s forced to leave notes plastered throughout his apartment, Memento-style. Despite the plot element’s familiarity, it’s still the most intriguing element of Sleeping Dogs, a sluggishly rendered mystery that audiences will have long stopped caring about before it reaches its conclusion.

Crowe plays Roy Freeman, a former homicide detective whose sad state of being is immediately signified not only by those notes offering the simplest of reminders but also the stack of Hungry-Man frozen dinners in his freezer. He’s wearing a large bandage on his head, the remnant...

Russell Crowe in Recuerdos Mortales (2024)
Sleeping Dogs Review: Russell Crowe Lays It on Thick in Forgettable Memento Clone
Russell Crowe in Recuerdos Mortales (2024)
Intentionally or not, Sleeping Dogs invites comparison to Memento. In Adam Cooper’s steadfastly self-serious directorial debut, a bedraggled ex-homicide detective, Roy Freeman (Russell Crowe), is tasked with solving a brutal murder that he can’t recall due to his memory loss. But the comparison to Christopher Nolan’s breakout doesn’t do Sleeping Dogs any favors. For one, we know we’re in trouble from the moment we see Freeman stumbling through a decrepit apartment, its otherwise sparse walls adorned with handwritten messages that exist as much for his benefit as ours, like the unfortunately hilarious “You Have Alzheimers.”

From the start, the film lays it on thick. Freeman’s apartment has all the markers of someone whose mind is slowing deteriorating: staplers that have been left in water glasses, melted pieces of technology in the microwave, and half-eaten meals on top of furniture. The man wears the thickest...

Captain Nemo Series ‘Nautilus’ Docks At AMC After Disney+ UK Exit
Image
Nautilus, the ten-part series inspired by Jules Verne’s beloved Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, has found a new home.

The series has landed at AMC, where it will air in 2024 as well as on AMC+. The move comes after the Disney+ UK commission was axed by the streamer earlier this summer as part of its content removal plan.

Nautilus tells the origin story of Captain Nemo: an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.

It is the latest series axed by Disney as part of its move to cut streaming costs – the Mouse House is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion – to find a new home. The Spiderwick Chronicles, which was similarly canceled at Disney+, found a spot on Roku.

The series was shot in Australia,...

Disney+ Not Going Forward With ‘Nautilus’ UK Series As Part Of Cost-Cutting Content Removal
Image
Exclusive: Nautilus, the UK live-action Captain Nemo series commissioned by Disney+ two years ago, is no longer headed to the streamer, Deadline has learned.

The decision is part of Disney’s streaming content removal plan unveiled in May, for which the company is taking an impairment charge of approximately $1.5 billion-$1.8 billion. It followed the February announcement by Disney that it intends to cut $3 billion in non-sports content spend across the company.

As part of the cost-reduction strategy, Disney’s streaming platforms, particularly flagship Disney+, have been taking a closer look on their programming with a new emphasis on content curation.

As Deadline reported exclusively Saturday, Disney+ also is not going forward with another upcoming original series, the The Spiderwick Chronicles, a U.S. live-action series adaptation of the popular children’s fantasy books.

Over the past couple of months, dozens of original series and specials were taken off Disney+ as well as Hulu,...

Balancing humour and pathos: Kristen Dunphy and Chloe Rickard on the controlled chaos of ‘Wakefield’
Image
When Wakefield premiered on the ABC this month, it was the culmination of a nearly decade-long journey for creator and showrunner Kristen Dunphy.

Finding a home for the mental health-focused series was only half the battle for its creative team as they were forced to navigate a Covid-19 shutdown across international and state borders. Dunphy and executive producer Chloe Rickard, COO Jungle Entertainment, talk to If about what it meant to finally complete the project.

Introspection resulting from self-isolation is hardly a new phenomenon.

But how does it factor into the portrayal of a fictional character?

In the case of Wakefield, Covid-19 protocol may have given lead actor Rudi Dharmalingam some of the emotional triggers necessary to step into the role of Nikhil Katira, a psychiatric nurse whose sanity begins to unravel while working at the titular facility.

Before he could resume filming the miniseries following the Covid-19 lockdown, Dharmalingam first had to complete quarantine,...

Thankfully, the film was just recently released on Blu-ray and will be able to reach a much-deserved wider audience as it will appeal to not only the sci-fi crowd but also comedy fans.

The Plot:

In the not-so-distant future, the planet has been overrun by monsters as a result of nuclear fallout due to multiple countries sending nuclear missiles into space to stop an impeding asteroid from impacting Earth. As a result of the nuclear fallout,...

Jungle Entertainment, BBC Studios and the ABC’s Wakefield will be among the first drama series to resume shooting after the shutdown after the producers obtained an exemption from Border Force travel restrictions for Rudi Dharmalingam.

The British actor will return to Australia on July 10 and after two weeks in quarantine will be ready to work when filming resumes on August 3.

In the eight-parter set in a Blue Mountains psychiatric hospital created by Kristen Dunphy, Dharmalingham plays Nik, a psych nurse blessed with a powerful combination of common sense and intuition.

Nik is easily the sanest person in what is a pretty crazy place but when a song gets stuck in his head, a dark secret from his past begins to intrude into his present, forming an intriguing puzzle.
