Warrior Season 3 Drops Fittingly Epic Track, “The Final Battle” [Exclusive]
Image
The martial arts crime drama series Warrior is the posthumous realization of a vision by one of the best-known action stars of all time. Originally conceived by Bruce Lee, who wrote a treatment for the project before his 1973 passing, Warrior was finally brought to life by a team of filmmakers including Jonathan Tropper and Shannon Lee. The series ran for two seasons on Cinemax until, after a long delay and much anticipation, it found a new home on Max for a third.

Since season 1, the adrenaline-fueled ups and dramatic downs of Warrior have been complemented by a musical score from H. Scott Salinas and Reza Safinia. Salinas and Safinia have pulled from their own diverse musical backgrounds to create a soundtrack perfectly suited for Warrior; Salinas is an acclaimed composer with projects like The Fourth Estate and Sea of Shadows under his belt, while Safinia has a history of collaborating...

Film Review: How I Got There (2022) by Zeyad ( Z ) Alhusaini
Image
Winner of the Audience Award at Red Sea International Film Festival, “How I Got There” is a unique film, as the first crime/action movie to be set in the Persian Gulf (Kuwait in particular), not to mention featuring Ron Perlman in a key role.

How I Got There is screening at Red Sea International Film Festival

Salem and Asad, two friends since childhood, could not be more different than each other. Salem is currently married with a gorgeous wife, who was, however, his second choice, and is working as an executive, in a job, though, that was essentially forced upon him and is utterly bored of. Asad, on the other hand, became a rap sensation at some point, only for his star to blow off as suddenly as it appeared, leaving him in the search of the one who jinxed him. Furthermore, Salem is almost always measured, careful and a man of few words,...

Kate Beckinsale and Daniel Brühl in The Face of an Angel (2014)
Screen Media Films has acquired U.S. rights to The Face Of An Angel, director Michael Winterbottom’s psychological thriller inspired by the killing of British student Meredith Kercher in Italy and the resulting trial of her flatmate, American student Amanda Knox. Listen: Exclusive Song From Music World Drama 'Filly Brown'
Last month, we brought you an exclusive dubstep track from the SXSW thriller "Snap." Co-directed by Youssef Delara, the film featured msuic by longtime industry veteran and musician Reza Safinia, but it wasn't the first time they worked together. They had previously collaborated on "Filly Brown," which premiered at Sundance in 2012. And with that picture now out in theaters, we have another exclusive track to share with you.  Starring Gina Rodriguez -- who also sings on the tune along with Diamonique -- the film follows young Latina rap star who is offered a shot at the big time, but has to choose between compromising her artistic ideals and abandoning her friends or making her lifelong dream come true. This remix of "This Is My Life" adds some speaker shaking bass drops, adding to a whole other dimension to what had originally been a more straightforward hip hop song. "Reza drew...

‘Filly Brown’ Composer Reza Safinia Brings Industry Experience to Indie Film
A little film I saw at Sundance last year is currently making some major waves at the box office. Filly Brown tells the story of aspiring Latina hip-hop star Maria, aka Filly Brown played by Gina Rodriguez. It opened last weekend on 188 screens, but netted $1.5 million in ticket sales. How? I credit the fact that Filly Brown takes the idea of the American dream and portrays it through the complicated, and at times difficult, lens of the music industry. We’ve certainly seen this story play out time and again, watching as hot young acts quickly climb the charts only to fall hard. But Filly Brown isn’t the story of a young girl only hoping to become a successful musician – it’s the story of a young girl desperate to put her family back together who stumbles across a talent that may help her make that happen. Driven by a commanding performance from Rodriguez, the...

Gina Rodriguez in Filly Brown (2012)
Filly Brown star Gina Rodriguez is shooting for the big time in “This is My Life,” a track from the film debuted exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter. The song, performed by Rodriguez and rapper Diamonique, was written by Reza Safinia, the film’s composer and music supervisor. Safinia, who has produced for stars such as Kylie Minogue, previously assisted in sessions with artists such as Wu-Tang Clan and Terror Squad. The Artful Roger: A Thank You To Roger Ebert

The mind rarely works in linear fashion, and I suspect mine may even be more chaotic than most. That item pinballed around the ol’ noggin, and, somewhere in all that bouncing here and there, triggered a bit of nostalgia. Probably because I was working on the piece during Oscar week, the mention of Ebert reminded me that there had been a time when this would’ve been the point in the year I’d be looking forward to the annual “If We Gave Out the Oscars” (or something like that) show done by Ebert along with his on-screen partner of nearly two dozen years,...

Interview with composer Reza Safinia on his dubstep-driven score for ‘Snap’ and electronic music’s relationship with film scoring.
Reza Safinia, a multi-instrumentalist composer raised on Barry White, Michael Jackson, and Quincy Jones Productions, has worked in the music industry producing and engineering records for artists from Kylie Minogue to Ms Dynamite. Recently, however, he has begun composing for film and has managed to incorporate his passion for textured, electronic music into the cinematic realm. This is apparent in his most recent film Snap, which premiered this year at SXSW and features a primarily dubstep-driven score. Safinia was kind enough to talk to us about his journey from record producer to film composer and how electronic music has shaped the art of film scoring.

What were some of your earliest musical influences?

When I was five years old my aunt gave me a cassette of Barry White and I used to play it every night on auto repeat on those [cassette players] where it would turn around when it got to the end of one side,...

Listen: Exclusive Dubstep Track From SXSW Thriller 'Snap'
Last night, Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" hit the SXSW Film Festival, bringing with it mayhem and a pushed-to-the-red soundtrack fuelled by Skrillex. But it's far from the only movie in Austin with cutting edge tunes that play an important role in the thrust and texture of the narrative. "Snap," co-directed by Youssef Delara (who was behind last year's buzzed-about "Filly Brown") and Victor Teran, is a psychological thriller set within the dubstep scene and we've got an exclusive track from Reza Safinia to give you a flavor of what will be coming out of movie theater speakers at SXSW. After previously working with Delara on "Filly Brown," they reunited for "Snap," with Safinia expanding his role as composer to include producer. A longtime music industry veteran and musician in his own right, Safinia told us he sees more opportunities for electronic artists in the film world, thanks one film in particular.

First Trailer & Poster for Filly Brown
Debuting at Sundance last year, Youssef Delara and Michael D. Olmos’ Filly Brown featured a very memorable performance from leading actress Gina Rodriguez.

Comparable to a female-led version of 8 Mile, the drama is finally coming to the big screen this April, and now Apple have debuted the first trailer and poster ahead of its release this spring.

I was fortunate enough to see its UK debut at Sundance London last year – you can read our review here – and I’m really looking forward to seeing it again.

“Filly Brown is an inspiring and gritty portrait of a young artist’s striving to find her voice and seize her dreams without compromise. Majo Tonorio, a.k.a. “Filly Brown,” is a raw, young Los Angeles hip-hop artist who spits rhymes from the heart. With an incarcerated mother, and a father struggling to provide for his daughters, a record contract could be...
