It reveals how serial killer Dean Corll ended up being murdered at the hands of his own accomplice, Elmer Wayne Henley.

Elmer Henley and David Brooks were Corll’s accomplices in the heinous crimes he committed between 1970 and 1973. When Corll came after Henley in August 1973, the latter realized that the only way to save other young kids and perhaps even himself from inevitable torture, r*pe, and subsequent murder was to kill Corll. So, Henley did.

Investigation Discovery’s new true crime documentary, The Serial Killer’s Apprentice, tells the story of the Houston Mass Murders, chilling murders of more than two dozen young boys at the hands of the serial killer Dean Corll. The crimes of Corll and his two accomplices, David Owen Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley Jr., came to light in 1973 after Henley shot Corll dead.

Based on Dr Katherine Ramsland and Tracy Ullman’s eponymous book, The Serial Killer’s Apprentice delves into Henley’s mind and memory through a conversation between him and Ramsland, as he reveals his thoughts and motivations for becoming an accomplice to Corll and Brooks.

Elmer Wayne Henley Jr., once the teenage accomplice to notorious serial killer Dean Corll, also known as the “Candy Man,” is finally breaking decades of silence. The serial killer who hid behind the guise of a friendly candy factory owner was in fact the mastermind behind the “Houston Mass Murders”, abducting and killing at least 28 young boys between 1970 and 1973 with the help of Henley and David Brooks.

Now, more than 50 years later, Investigation Discovery’s The Serial Killer’s Apprentice is revisiting the horrors of the Candy Man. In a rare on-camera conversation with forensic psychologist Dr. Katherine Ramsland, Henley shared,

I’m not trying to absolve myself of guilt. I’m trying to make people see the truth.

Premiering on Sunday, August 17, this two-hour special documentary delves deeper into the psychology, manipulation, and disturbing choices that made one of America’s most haunting crime sprees possible.

Investigation Discovery has announced the premiere date for a new, two-hour documentary titled The Serial Killer’s Apprentice. The documentary will revisit Dean Corll, one of the most sinister killers in recent history, and feature an in-depth interview with his accomplice, Elmer Wayne Henley Jr.

The Serial Killer’s Apprentice will premiere on Sunday, August 17, from 9-11 p.m. Et/Pt on ID and will be available to stream on HBO Max.

Marking the first time Henley has spoken about his crimes in over 50 years, The Serial Killer’s Apprentice will feature Henley in conversation with renowned criminologist Dr. Katherine Ramsland. For two hours, Ramsland dives into the mind and memory of Henley – and what motivated him to act as Corll’s accomplice in what was known as the largest mass murder in U.S. history at the time.

Investigation Discovery’s The Serial Killer’s Apprentice focuses on the murders committed by Dean Corll (known as The Candyman Killer) as recalled by his accomplice, Elmer Wayne Henley Jr. The two-hour documentary, which features the first interviews with Henley Jr. in over 50 years, will premiere on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at 9pm Et/Pt.

Criminologist Dr. Katherine Ramsland and Tracy Ullman’s book inspired the documentary, and Dr. Ramsland’s probing interviews with Henley are featured in the film.
