The Serial Killer’s Apprentice is Investigation Discovery’s new true crime documentary, which tells the story of the Houston Mass Murders from the mid-1970s that shook up America. It reveals how serial killer Dean Corll ended up being murdered at the hands of his own accomplice, Elmer Wayne Henley.
Elmer Henley and David Brooks were Corll’s accomplices in the heinous crimes he committed between 1970 and 1973. When Corll came after Henley in August 1973, the latter realized that the only way to save other young kids and perhaps even himself from inevitable torture, r*pe, and subsequent murder was to kill Corll. So, Henley did.
Henley murdered Corll by shooting him 6 times with his own .22 pistol, before surrendering to the police later that day. In Investigation Discovery’s The Serial Killer’s Apprentice, 69-year-old Henley opens up about the dark legacy of the Candy Man killer in a conversation...

Elmer Wayne Henley Jr., once the teenage accomplice to notorious serial killer Dean Corll, also known as the “Candy Man,” is finally breaking decades of silence. The serial killer who hid behind the guise of a friendly candy factory owner was in fact the mastermind behind the “Houston Mass Murders”, abducting and killing at least 28 young boys between 1970 and 1973 with the help of Henley and David Brooks.
Now, more than 50 years later, Investigation Discovery’s The Serial Killer’s Apprentice is revisiting the horrors of the Candy Man. In a rare on-camera conversation with forensic psychologist Dr. Katherine Ramsland, Henley shared,
I’m not trying to absolve myself of guilt. I’m trying to make people see the truth.
Premiering on Sunday, August 17, this two-hour special documentary delves deeper into the psychology, manipulation, and disturbing choices that made one of America’s most haunting crime sprees possible.

“Infamously known as ‘The Candyman Killer,’ Dean Corll stalked the streets of Houston, Texas, in the early to mid 1970s, luring and brutally killing at least 28 young men. Corll operated largely undetectably for years due not only to his unassuming nature in the community but largely because of the help he received by two young accomplices—Elmer Wayne Henley Jr.

Anne Rice and Bram Stoker, what other writers have done more to define vampire mythology and culture? Yes, there were stories before and more to come, but Interview with the Vampire, like Dracula before it, set the template for the classic and modern immortal nocturnal narrative.
Stoker’s Dracula was as much a feral creature as the historical figure from whom Stoker borrowed the name. Rice’s characters came from her imagination and had as much of the human essence in their psyches as the flesh between their fangs. They contemplated existential horrors, averted their eyes when loved ones died, and debated the ethics of nutritional hemoglobin, straight from the tap. They did it unblinkingly, and not only because of post-mortem ocular putrefaction.
Interview with the Vampire was originally a 38-page short story Rice wrote in late 1968 through early 1969. She extended it out of grief in 1972. Her five-year-old daughter, Michelle,...
