A relative once described North Carolina as “a valley of humility between two mountains of pride in Virginia and South Carolina.” I found that to be the case while attending college in Winston-Salem, which is also the hometown of writer-director Angus MacLachlan as well as the setting for many of his films. The latest of these, A Little Prayer, provides the clearest illustration of how places imprint themselves upon us and guide our actions.

The first Stephen King adaptation arriving in the back half of 2025 is a doozy based on King’s 1979 novel of the same name. The R-rated film centers on a grim annual contest in which 100 teens must journey, nonstop and under strict rules, until only one is left alive.

While the phrase “slice-of-life” is often applied to independent films, few have the audaciousness to be as genuinely observational as “A Little Prayer.” It’s a film that avoids cliches, doesn’t offer easy solutions, and resists the temptation to compound its narrative with more overwhelming emotional moments. Moviefone is getting a little “toxic.” IndieWire can unveil the latest ad for the legendary entertainment brand that features Peter Dinklage as his character from “The Toxic Avenger” reboot. (“The Toxic Avenger” will be in theaters August 29 to revive the beloved Troma franchise.)

Junebug writer Angus MacLachlan’s latest feature A Little Prayer premiered back at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival where it was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. A couple of years ago, Imagine Entertainment picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and in recent months the project has been moving forward at 20th Century Studios. Brian Duffield – who previously worked with 20th Century on the alien invasion film No One Will Save You – is co-writing, directing, and producing the film. We’ve heard that Austin Abrams (Wolfs) was cast in the lead role, with Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) signing on to co-star. Now, Deadline has broken the news that Abrams and Brolin are being joined in the cast by Elisabeth Shue (The Karate Kid), John Ortiz (The Madness), Jane Levy (Evil Dead), and Emily Rudd (Fear Street Part Two: 1978). The Palm Springs International ShortFest, one of the world’s premiere festivals dedicated to short form film, has announced a 2025 lineup boasting an exceptional array of acting talent: Ian McKellen, John C. Studio Ghibli’s ‘Ponyo,’ the films of Laika and a celebration of Marilyn Monroe are among the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures new exhibitions that will open in 2026.

Studio Ghibli’s “Ponyo” will focus on the animation process and highlight a donation of original production materials that Ghibli made to the Academy Collection. The second exhibition, titled “Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon,” will be a centennial celebration of the actress that will examine her public image through original screen-used costumes, photographs, personal items and more.

There will also be a traveling exhibition, “Hidden Worlds: The Films of Laika,” which will explore the technology and artistry of stop motion animation through its filmography, including “Coraline” (2009), “ParaNorman” (2012) and “Kubo and the Two Strings” (2016).

The long-awaited dark superhero comedy reboot The Toxic Avenger is having a blast with its gory, outlandish teasers, and ScreenRant is pleased to present the most recent one. Formatted as an in-world documentary about the monstercore band The Killer Nutz (managed by Elijah Wood's Fritz Garbinger), the newest teaser offers a sneak peek at Peter Dinklage's Toxie in grotesque action.

Despite being the fifth film in the franchise, the newest Toxic Avenger installment adapts Troma Entertainment's original 1984 movie rather than continuing the story. It follows meek janitor Winston Gooze (Dinklage) as he is transformed into the powerful and eponymous Toxic Avenger after a terrible accident. The movie was written and directed by Macon Blair, whose debut film was the well-received 2017 thriller I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore.
