Four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) leads The Toxic Avenger reboot as the titular character alongside Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Emmy nominee Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso), Julia Davis, Julian Kostov, David Yow, Macon Blair, Rebecca O'Mara, Jonny Coyne, and Jane Levy.

‘A Little Prayer’ Review: Angus MacLachlan’s Family Drama Takes Us There (to North Carolina)
Image
A relative once described North Carolina as “a valley of humility between two mountains of pride in Virginia and South Carolina.” I found that to be the case while attending college in Winston-Salem, which is also the hometown of writer-director Angus MacLachlan as well as the setting for many of his films. The latest of these, A Little Prayer, provides the clearest illustration of how places imprint themselves upon us and guide our actions.

In MacLachlan’s film, a tight-knit family in the Tar Heel state must question what it means to remain committed to their spouses and children. But in a rarity for Southern-set cinema, he’s uninterested in indicting a culture.

The Toxic Avenger Review: A Gloriously Demented New Take On Toxie And A Delightfully Unhinged Experience
Image
With talk of "superhero fatigue" dominating headlines, it's exciting when something different comes along. Thunderbolts* explored mental health and loneliness, Superman rejuvenated the Man of Steel, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps embraced the work of Jack Kirby for a one-of-a-kind 1960s caper. The Toxic Avenger, meanwhile, is a delightfully unhinged experience that proves itself one of 2025's biggest surprises and unlike any superhero blockbuster out there.

The movie follows janitor Winston Gooze, who, diagnosed with a serious health condition caused by the corrupt megacorporation he works for, is transformed into a mutant vigilante after being thrown into a vat of chemicals. Now an unlikely hero, Toxie sets out on...

Drew Barrymore in Scream. Grita antes de morir (1996)
Hulu Unleashes Grotesque Horror Sequel that is Sure to Swallow Your Soul!
Drew Barrymore in Scream. Grita antes de morir (1996)
Any time a filmmaker takes over a popular horror franchise, there’s going to be apprehension from the fans. Most were certain that the Radio Silence team would do just fine in taking the reins of Scream, but that didn’t stop others from worrying about whether they could create the same thrilling magic as Wes Craven. All of us have that franchise that we hold close like a good friend. So, of course, we tend to get a little protective over how they’re treated.

Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead is one such franchise that has a legion of die-hard fans. I’m one who immediately fell in love with the slapstick-meets-demons world Raimi created. Who doesn’t love Bruce Campbell’s iconic portrayal as Ash Williams, or the filmmaker’s kinetic camerawork that has inspired every generation of directors since? It was a bit of a surprise, then,...

7 Upcoming Horror Novel Adaptations That We Can’t Wait to See
Image
There’s a vast world of horror beyond movies out there, especially in the literary space. So much so that novels frequently inspire new horror adaptations, whether brand new publications or enduring horror lit classics.

In a year that’s already delivered an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Monkey and Adam Cesare‘s YA slasher novel Clown in a Cornfield, there’s still plenty more on the way.

Here are seven upcoming adaptations of horror novels that we can’t wait to check out.

The Long Walk – September 12

The first Stephen King adaptation arriving in the back half of 2025 is a doozy based on King’s 1979 novel of the same name. Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) directs from a script by Jt Mollner (Strange Darling). The R-rated film centers on a grim annual contest in which 100 teens must journey, nonstop and under strict rules, until only one is left alive.

Why Lauren Graham's Joan Bennett Left Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist
Image
"Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist," which ran for two seasons and one Christmas TV movie special from 2020 to 2021, was a sweet, weird little show that never picked up an enormous audience — but if you're at all familiar with the series, you might wonder why Lauren Graham's Joan Bennett didn't stick around after the season 2 premiere.

Just as a quick reminder: "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" stars Jane Levy as Zoey Clarke, a computer programmer living in San Francisco who's struggling with some family issues when something bizarre happens. While she's getting an Mri, there's an earthquake, and all of a sudden, Zoey gains a strange power: She can see people express their real feelings through song, a phenomenon that nobody else witnesses. As for Graham, her character Joan is Zoey's boss at Sprq Point, a tech start-up.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about Graham's abrupt departure, creator Austin Winsberg explained...

Toxic Avenger Resurrects Iconic 35-Year-Old Piece of Movie Lore
Image
Peter Dinklage's Toxic Avengerhas officially resurrected the Moviefone telephone line more than a decade after it closed.

Per Bloody Disgusting, the long-lost Moviefone telephone line has officially returned. Rather than hearing the iconic "Hello, and welcome to Moviefone!" automated message, however, callers will instead be greeted by none other than Dinklage himself in the form of Toxie. Since the promotion between Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting began on Aug. 1, fans have been able call 1-802-377-film to hear Peter Dinklage in character as he reads show-times for the film, offers tips on purchasing tickets, and re-enacts scenes from the trailer for the upcoming The Toxic Avenger reboot.

Cineverse SVP of Marketing Lauren McCarthy said of the promotion, "We are thrilled to bring fans (writer-director) Macon Blair’s hilarious, punk-rock, heart-warming film alongside the imitable nostalgia of the Moviefone number. This toxi-rific pairing is just the latest installment in our...

A Little Prayer (2023) Movie Review: A Devastating, Perceptive Drama Of Generational Empathy
Image
“A Little Prayer” is a film that is so humble in its intentions, restrained within its production, and understated in its approach that it automatically earns goodwill, as there could be no other goal on the part of writer/director Angus MacLachlan than to make an artistically satisfying work of empathetic filmmaking. While the phrase “slice-of-life” is often applied to independent films, few have the audaciousness to be as genuinely observational as “A Little Prayer.” It’s a film that avoids cliches, doesn’t offer easy solutions, and resists the temptation to compound its narrative with more overwhelming emotional moments. Those seeking an incendiary work of awards bait may be disappointed, but “A Little Prayer” is a generous film that has both wisdom and compassion on its subject of familial evolution.

Both set and shot within the small town of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, “A Little Prayer” is a snapshot of...

‘Star Wars’ 50th Anniversary Re-Release Dated By Disney; 20th/Imagine’s ‘Whalefall’ Eyes Fall 2026 Debut
Image
Disney has dated the 50th anniversary rerelease of Star Wars for April 30, 2027. No other news was made available as to whether it will reverse engineer George Lucas’ 1997 edits and additions (the Han Solo vs. Greedo who shoots first blah blah) or keep that 20th anniversary print intact.

Recently, the British Film Institute screened the original 1977 print which it noted on its site that the pic’s color “is gloriously unfaded.” That print was also “one of the precious handful of dye transfer Ib Technicolor prints produced uniquely for the first British release.”

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope counts a lifetime box office cume of $461 million domestic, $775.3M global. It’s the movie that started it all, a multibillion-dollar-grossing space opera franchise spanning films, streaming series and merchandise.

The 1997 rerelease was lucrative, calling on then-dvd audiences to rewatch the classic for the first time in a long time...

The ad, released below, was made in partnership with studio Cineverse and Moviefone. Fans can call Moviefone for the first time since the phone line (1-802-377-film) was disconnected more than a decade ago. (Moviefone celebrates its 35th anniversary this year.) 14 Films to See in August
Image
As the summer comes to an end, August delivers the season’s most eclectic lineup of films. From a few studio highlights to Cannes premieres to festival favorites some years back that are finally arriving, there are many worthwhile opportunities to beat the heat.

14. Harvest (Athina Rachel Tsangari; Aug. 1 in theaters and Aug. 8 on Mubi)

One of the most beautifully shot films of the year, courtesy of Sean Price Williams, Athina Rachel Tsangari’s period piece Harvest is rolling out this month. Savina Petkova said in her Venice review, “An unnamed village, an unknown time; somewhere in Britain, sometime in the Late Middle Ages, something is about to end. Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Harvest sees the twilight of an old social order, but is not mourning a paradise lost. That would be too simplistic a comparison for a filmmaker whose work has always succeeded in weaving the allegorical with the political,...

Before The Boys, Jack Quaid Starred In A Failed Zombie Series On Prime Video
Image
Jack Quaid has found what could very well be his career-defining role in Prime Video's "The Boys." The anti-superhero series, based on Garth Ennis' irreverent comic book, cast Quaid as Hughie Campbell. After his girlfriend was accidentally killed by A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), a member of the superhero team The Seven, Hughie joined Billy Butcher's (Karl Urban) titular group of vigilantes. The Boys are dedicated to taking down the team of "Supes," led by the narcissistic and vindictive Homelander (Antony Starr). Now four seasons in with a fifth in the works, "The Boys" has proved a huge hit with audiences and has made Jack Quaid a household name.

Before his role on "The Boys," though, Quaid was almost part of a very different series for Amazon. Between 2013 and 2017, Amazon ran public pilot seasons on Prime Video in which viewers would have the opportunity to watch and give feedback on a range of new series pilots.

One of the first horror movies of the 2010s to kick off the genre's reboot craze is heading to Hulu. Fede Álvarez's Evil Dead will land on the streamer at the top of next month.

Beginning August 1, Evil Dead will be available to stream on Hulu. Released in 2013, the supernatural horror movie serves as both a soft reboot and continuation of the Evil Dead franchise, following a new set of protagonists who come under attack by dead people in a remote cabin in the woods. The Evil Dead franchise began in 1981 with writer/director Sam Raimi's low-budget horror film The Evil Dead, starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. Following the massive success of The Evil Dead,...

Image
Angus MacLachlan is back directing for the big screen with drama “A Little Prayer.” The feature, which debuted at Sundance 2023, is thematically in line with MacLachlan’s former films, all family dramas: The filmmaker wrote “Junebug” and made his directorial debut with “Goodbye to All that” in 2013.

88% Rated Horror Movie That Started Hollywood’s Best Trend Dominates Streaming After 9 Years
Image
What if silence wasn’t golden, but deadly? Before A Quiet Place had you tiptoeing around monsters that hunt by sound, and Bird Box blindfolded you against apocalyptic visions, there was Don’t Breathe—a 2016 horror-thriller that quite literally took your breath away. With a killer 88% Rotten Tomatoes rating and Dylan Minnette at the helm of panic, the film sneaked its way into horror history by playing with sensory themes.

And now, nine years later, it’s still haunting viewers. Yep, according to reports, Don’t Breathe is now trending at #2 on HBO’s June 2025 streaming list, right behind A Minecraft Movie. Why won’t it? After all, Fede Álvarez dared to do what few films had done before—it trapped audiences in a house where the villain is blind, but terrifyingly capable. The film weaponized silence and made it suffocating. And now, the film might have a threequel waiting.

Uncensored Toxic Avenger Trailer Promises Some Truly Unhinged Violence
Image
In this new trailer for the Peter Dinklage-starring remake of The Toxic Avenger, it takes a minute or so before you find out why, exactly, this is the uncensored trailer. Then, the mayhem begins, as a Toxie for a new generation begins causing bloody carnage — sticking up for the little guy with his super-strength and toxic mop.

The original Toxic Avenger was written and directed by Lloyd Kaufman in 1984, and was followed by three movie sequels, a video game, a stage musical, a Marvel Comics series, and an animated TV show. That’s more than most franchises get — and now, it’s getting a reboot! Starring Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Taylour Paige, Jacob Tremblay, and Jane Levy, Toxic Avenger has been waiting a while for its release, following its 2023 premiere at Fantastic Fest.

According to the official description, “When a downtrodden janitor, Winston Gooze, is exposed to a catastrophic toxic accident,...

Peter Dinklage Is a Mean, Green, Crime-Fighting Machine in New 'The Toxic Avenger' Red Band Trailer
Image
He's mean, he's green, and in just under two months, he's coming to the big screen. Nearly two years since it made its debut as the opening film of Fantastic Fest, Macon Blair's hotly anticipated The Toxic Avenger remake starring Game of Thrones favorite Peter Dinklage is finally almost here, and a new Red Band trailer is celebrating the blood and guts the mop-wielding hero is about to spill. The gory superhero horror comedy based on the 1984 Troma film by Lloyd Kaufman faced an uphill battle to find a distributor because of its over-the-top graphic content, but it's that same level of violence and adherence to the ideas that made the original a cult classic that drew Cineverse to it in the first place. This new look relishes the viscera viewers will soon see in theaters while also teasing the surprisingly heartfelt story of the perpetually unfortunate Winston Gooze.

First Look at Tatted Up Josh Brolin in ‘Whalefall’ Adaptation, Now in Production
Image
Whalefall enters production today in Los Angeles, and writer Daniel Kraus shared a behind-the-scenes look at Josh Brolin as Mitt Gardiner.

Kraus wrote in his newsletter, “Nearly all of my books have been optioned at some point, but very few get shot, and I wouldn’t have necessarily bet on the book that’s mostly set inside a whale would be the one to get there — and attract so much talent. Not only Brolin, but Austin Abrams (playing Jay), who I’ve gotten to know as a good dude who is super-super-super serious about this role.”

Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) directs the aquatic survival thriller from a script he co-wrote with Kraus, based on Kraus’ 2023 novel.

It centers on a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out.

Kaitlyn Dever in Nadie Podrá Salvarte (2023)
Whalefall: Elisabeth Shue, Jane Levy, and more join “swallowed by a whale” thriller
Kaitlyn Dever in Nadie Podrá Salvarte (2023)
A couple of years ago, Imagine Entertainment picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and in recent months the project has been moving forward at 20th Century Studios. The Toxic Avenger Teaser Sees Elijah Wood's Monstercore Band Attacked By Peter Dinklage
Image
The long-awaited dark superhero comedy reboot The Toxic Avenger is having a blast with its gory, outlandish teasers, and ScreenRant is pleased to present the most recent one. Formatted as an in-world documentary about the monstercore band The Killer Nutz (managed by Elijah Wood's Fritz Garbinger), the newest teaser offers a sneak peek at Peter Dinklage's Toxie in grotesque action.

Despite being the fifth film in the franchise, the newest Toxic Avenger installment adapts Troma Entertainment's original 1984 movie rather than continuing the story. It follows meek janitor Winston Gooze (Dinklage) as he is transformed into the powerful and eponymous Toxic Avenger after a terrible accident. The movie was written and directed by Macon Blair, whose debut film was the well-received 2017 thriller I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore.

First screened at Fantastic Fest in September 2023, The Toxic Avenger is finally seeing a wider theatrical release...

Acclaimed Sundance Indie ‘A Little Prayer’ Sets 2025 Release With Music Box Films (Exclusive)
Image
We’re still waiting for a new Pope, but blessings are flowing in the indie film sector. “A Little Prayer,” the acclaimed drama that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, has secured North American distribution after the breakdown of its original deal.

Written and directed by “Junebug” scribe Angus MacLachlan, “A Little Prayer” resonated with Sundance audiences thanks to its small, grounded storytelling and emotional performances from leads David Strathairn and Jane Levy. Music Box Films will now take the film out for a theatrical release later in 2025.

Two years ago, Sony Pictures Classics scooped up the project in Park City. In late 2023, the Writers Guld of America kicked off what would become painful dual Hollywood labor strikes, forcing talent to join picket lines and many films to delay release. Somewhere in work stoppages, individuals familiar with “A Little Prayer” said, the SPC acquisition could not be finalized. The...

Revenge of the Remakes: Horror Reboots That Actually Worked
Image
Horror remakes get a bad rap – and let’s be honest, they often deserve it. For every clever reimagining, we’ve sat through a dozen limp reboots that sucked the life (and the scares) right out of the original. But sometimes, a remake comes along that doesn’t just cash in on nostalgia; it sharpens, reinvents, or even surpasses the source material.

With fresh remakes like Wolf Man (2025) and Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein reboot lighting up horror headlines, now’s the perfect time to revisit the remakes that proved this subgenre can deliver more than lazy copy-paste thrills. Here’s our list of horror reboots and remakes that earned their place in the genre’s blood-soaked hall of fame.

Horror Remakes That Actually Worked The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter’s The Thing often gets cited as one of the best horror remakes ever made… and for good reason. While...

David Strathairn and Jane Levy in A Little Prayer (2023)
Beginning to end by Paul Risker
David Strathairn and Jane Levy in A Little Prayer (2023)
A Little Prayer

Playwright and filmmaker Angus MacLachlan's A Little Prayer follows Bill (David Strathairn), an elderly father who desperately wants to protect his daughter-in-law Tammy (Jane Levy) after he discovers his son David (Will Pullen) is having an affair. Meanwhile, daughter Patti (Anna Camp), who has walked out on her husband again, turns up with her little girl Hadley (Billie Roy). Bill does his best to keep his suspicions from his wife Venida (Cecilia Weston), but struggling to engage his son in conversation, reminders of his own mistakes resurface.

MacLachlan directorial credits include the 2014 comedy-drama Goodbye To All That, about a man who experiences a series of one night stands after his wife suddenly announces she wants a divorce, and 2017's Abundant Acreage Available, which follows two siblings confront a surprising revelation after their father's death. He has also written the plays Junebug and The Dead Eye Boy.

Bruce Campbell Hilariously Confesses He Didn’t Know What ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Was, Then Says He’s ‘So In’
Image
Bruce Campbell, known for his roles in Evil Dead and Bubba Ho-Tep, is ready to join the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds crew, even if he didn’t exactly know what the show was at first.

At the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds panel during Emerald City Comic Con 2025, Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount (Captain Pike) said he’d do anything to get Bruce Campbell to guest star on the show. The news made it to Campbell, who was at the event for a Dead by Dawn panel with Evil Dead co-star Jane Levy.

When Campbell heard about Mount’s request, he didn’t quite know what Strange New Worlds was. “When you say Strange New Worlds,” he asked, “You’re referring to a show that exists? We would probably have to start by letting me know what the show is. What is the show?”

After learning that...

‘The Toxic Avenger’: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and All You Need to Know
Image
Remember the cult hit from 1984 that made Troma Entertainment notorious for its schlockiness? Finally, The Toxic Avenger is returning to the big screen once again. The franchise has been equally funny, brutal, and strangely charming. The original film mixed slapstick violence with a bit of satire. After many decades, the reboot looks to be authentic to its roots while introducing something new for the younger audience.

However, the path to this remake has not been easy. After premiering to a select audience, the film mysteriously disappeared. The movie even had big names like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Guillermo Del Toro attached to it at some points. Now that it appears to be finished, let’s explore the actors, storyline, and all the relevant details on this radioactive resurrection.

After It, Bill Skarsgard Starred In Another Spooky Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Stephen King superfans, especially those who have read the books in the "Dark Tower" series (currently being adapted by Mike Flanagan), will be able to tell you that many of the author's stories interconnect in unexpected ways. For instance: in the original novel of King's "It," Dick Halloran from "The Shining" appears and interacts with one of the story's child protagonists. There is a scene in "Wizard and Glass," the fourth "Dark Tower" novel, where the characters visit the plague-ridden reality of King's "The Stand." The character of Father Callahan from "Salem's Lot" becomes one of the main characters of the "Dark Tower" series. There are also several King stories that take place in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. There are many other connections that a deep-cut King reader could add to this list.

In 2018, television honchos Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason decided to take advantage of their...

'Locked' Fans Need to Watch the Twisted 2016 Horror Film 'Don't Breathe'
Image
The latest pulse-pounding sensation taking the cinema by storm is the Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins-led action thrillerLocked, which features the Nosferatu star as a cocky carjacker who discovers he is in over his head after he becomes trapped in a greatly modified car belonging to an enigmatic sociopath looking to teach the thief a brutal lesson. A remake of the Argentinian film 4x4, Locked has already earned promising reviews and is leaving audiences squirming in their seats as they watch in terror as Skarsgård fights for the upper hand.

The thriller's gripping premise is reminiscent of a 2016 horror hit that also dominated the silver screen, with Fede Álvarez's deeply unnerving hit Don't Breathefocusing on a young thief and her friends who find themselves in a terrifying situation after attempting to rob a blind veteran of his secret stash, only to realize they're trapped and being hunted by the older man.

This 12-Year-Old Horror Remake Is Scarier Than the Original in Every Way (& You Can Stream It for Free in April)
Image
Fede Álvarez's blood-soaked Evil Dead remake will be available to stream for free starting April 1.

Just over 20 years after Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness landed in theaters, Álvarez helped usher in a new era for the iconic horror franchise with his 2013 reboot, Evil Dead. The film, which lands on Tubi next month, tossed aside the more comedic elements of the prior films in favor of a darker and meaner tone but doesn't forget to include tons of blood and gore, which remains a franchise staple. Álvarez's more sinister reboot proved a success as the film earned $97.5 million at the worldwide box office and was generally well-received at the time, having earned a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The film centers around Mia, a drug addict who heads to a remote cabin in the woods with her brother and a group of friends to help rid herself of the habit. However,...

Why Dylan Pryor From Suits LA Looks So Familiar
Image
NBC's latest "Suits" spin-off has finally arrived, introducing fans to a new setting, fresh characters, and more unique cases in the world of law. Centering around Ted Black (Stephen Amell) and the other characters who work at his firm, "Suits LA" tackles everything from murder mysteries to Hollywood drama, with the latter opening the door to some fun celebrity cameos. However, the Dylan Pryor character looks set to be at the heart of the celebrity-centric chaos in season 1, and viewers who grew up watching Nickelodeon shows might recognize her from a pair of classics.

The "Suits LA" season 1 premiere, "Seven Days a Week and Twice on a Sunday," introduces Dylan as an in-demand actor who Ted's firm wants to represent. He plays it cool and pretends that no skin will fall off his nose if she chooses a competitor, but we later learn that Ted really wants Dylan to be his client.

5 gripping shows like From you need to binge-watch next
Image
After an incredible third installment, the hit sci-fi horror series From was renewed for a 10-episode fourth season in November 2024, and fans have been buzzing with excitement ever since. Everyone wants to know what new horrors await the residents of the nightmarish town, but unfortunately, we won't be seeing this beloved show return to our screens until sometime next year.

From season 4 was confirmed for a 2026 release when the renewal was announced. Production on the fourth season is slated to begin this year in Nova Scotia, where the previous three seasons were shot, but a filming start date has not been revealed. Also, given that this show heavily utilizes special effects, we can likely expect a longer post-production period. This is likely the reason why we won't be seeing From season 4 until next year. It's the lengthy filmmaking process. While this is extremely disappointing for fans, we're expecting the wait...
