Win Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears on DVD
Image
To mark the release of Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears on 11th May, we’ve been given 2 copies to give away on DVD.

The fantastic Miss Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis), lady detective extraordinaire, is perfectly at home wielding a pearl-handled pistol and her dagger-sharp wit on the backstreets of Melbourne…but a new case sees her spanning the world from Australia to London and Palestine, where she frees Shirin Abbas, a young Bedouin girl (Izabella Yena) from her unjust imprisonment in Jerusalem. In doing so, Phryne begins to unravel a decade-old mystery concerning priceless emeralds, ancient curses and the truth behind the suspicious disappearance of Shirin’s forgotten tribe.

.

We see the return of Detective John Robinson aka Jack, Phryne’s faithful, flirtatious friend, who is more often than not in need of rescue. Other featured fan favourites include Phryne’s trusty companion and maid Dot and her naïve husband Constable Hugh Collins,...

Ashleigh Cummings
Why Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears Had to Leave Its Supporting Characters Behind
Ashleigh Cummings
If Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears was your first interaction with the glorious Phryne Fisher, then you might not totally understand the Melbourne-set scene early in the film that sees Jack discussing Phryne’s presumed death with two very concerned friends of hers.

Those friends are Dottie (Ashleigh Cummings) and Hugh (Hugo Johnstone-Burt), and they are two important characters in the world of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, which ran for three seasons and is now available to watch in its entirety on Acorn TV. Though fans of the series get the chance to briefly check in with Hugh and Dottie in the first act of Crypt of Tears, it is the only time we get to spend with these beloved characters. So why weren’t they in the movie more?

“It’s really complicated,” says Davis of transferring the story from the Melbourne-set TV series to the internationally-set feature film.

Elisabeth Moss in El hombre invisible (2020)
‘The Invisible Man’ squares off against the ‘Miss Fisher’ movie

Given that they appeal to very different audiences, the first-day ticket sales for The Invisible Man and Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears in Australia were very healthy.

Leigh Whannell’s Sydney-shot edge-of-the-seat thriller opened bigger yesterday, although the murder-mystery/adventure/romance staring Essie Davis and Nathan Page had already earned a hefty sum from paid prevews.

Produced by Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum and Goalpost Pictures’ Kylie du Fresne, The Invisible Man grossed $375,000 on 315 screens for Universal, tracking just below A Quiet Place’s first day.

Roadshow launched Every Cloud Productions’ movie directed by Tony Tilse on 376 screens, raking in $180,000 and $389,000 including advance screenings, outperforming the Universal release in some regional locations.

Both are set to generate very good business over the weekend, particularly as Miss Fisher’s more mature fans aren’t the type to rush out to see movies on day one.

Emotional responses to Sydney premiere of ‘Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears’
Nathan Page
Nathan Page and Essie Davis at the premiere.

More than 1,200 people including numerous Phryne Fisher look-alikes flocked to the sold-out premiere of Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace on Thursday night.

Essie Davis and Nathan Page spoke at each of the three public sessions – where applause erupted from the opening scene – and at two VIP/media screenings.

Davis told fans it is a joy to play the character and if enough people pay to see the film “it will give us the opportunity to make more.”

Among the emotional responses, one woman told the producer, Every Cloud Productions’ Fiona Eagger and writer/executive producer Deb Cox, that watching the TV series had “saved her life.”

She did not elaborate but Cox surmises that many women feel “invisible” and depressed and can draw strength from Phyrne.

One young woman told Eagger and Cox she...

Phryne Fisher and Jack Robinson go to new places in ‘Miss Fisher’ movie
Daniel Lapaine
(L-r) Daniel Lapaine, Jacqueline McKenzie, Nathan Page and director Tony Tilse on set in Victoria.

The relationship between Essie Davis’ Phryne Fisher and Nathan Page’s Jack Robinson breaks new ground in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears.

That’s according to Tony Tilse, who directed Every Cloud Productions’ murder-mystery/adventure/romance, which premieres in Australian cinemas on February 27.

“The lovely tension between Phryne and Jack is always there but the two of them on screen together is just magic in a way we haven’t seen before,” Tilse tells If.

“Nathan is fantastic, absolutely up there with Essie’s performance level. It’s beautiful to watch.”

Tilse, who was the set-up director of Ms Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, was the natural choice by producer Fiona Eagger and scriptwriter/executive producer Deb Cox

to helm the feature.

“After the third series we started talking about the movie as a way to continue the franchise,...

Essie Davis, Nathan Page, and Hugo Johnstone-Burt in Los misteriosos asesinatos de Miss Fisher (2012)
‘Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears’ Trailer: Cult Favorite Returns in Acorn TV’s Film — Exclusive
Essie Davis, Nathan Page, and Hugo Johnstone-Burt in Los misteriosos asesinatos de Miss Fisher (2012)
When we left Phryne Fisher five years ago after the third season of “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries,” the Australian Broadcasting Corp.’s glamorous Jazz Age private eye was jetting off in her own biplane, flying away from a bunch of stylishly solved murders and a complicated relationship with Melbourne Detective Inspector Jack Robinson.

This, obviously, was just a thoroughly and totally unacceptable way to end the show.

Based on the 20-book series of “Miss Fisher” mysteries by Kerry Greenwood, fans knew there were plenty more stories waiting to be embodied by the cult favorite character, played by Essie Davis. Another season of the television show wasn’t in the cards at ABC, so producers Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger, via their production company Every Cloud Productions, turned to Kickstarter to raise funds for a movie-length installment — which promptly almost tripled its fundraising goal and started filming.

The trailer for that film,...

Release set for ‘Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears’ soundtrack
Essie Davis in ‘Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears.’ (Photo credit: Ben King)

Greg J. Walker’s original motion picture soundtrack of Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears will be released on February 21, six days before the film opens in Australian cinemas.

Composer, recording artist, arranger and producer Walker wrote the score for the TV series produced by Every Cloud Productions.

For the movie which follows Essie Davis’ Miss Phyrne Fisher as she heads to Jerusalem to fight injustice and oppression, he composed an orchestral score with new, exotic instruments to match the escapades on screen.

Walker used Lawrence of Arabia and the Indiana Jones movies as key musical references as well as the cheeky spirit of the 1920s.

“I had to, in some ways, start from scratch and get out of my comfort zone; there was a long period of searching for the right musical keys to unlock this one,...

Essie Davis dressed for success in ‘Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears’
Essie Davis as Phryne Fisher.

Essie Davis sports an array of dashing outfits as the heroine in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears, which opens in Australia on February 27 and starts streaming on Acorn TV in the Us on March 23.

Costume designer Margot Wilson created 15 different looks for Phryne Fisher as the sleuth shows her prowess at fencing, jumps from a cliff onto a train and through windows, dances the tango, flies a plane and drives a car.

Wilson also enjoyed swapping the detective suit traditionally worn by Nathan Page’s Inspector Jack Robinson for a safari suit made from linen table cloths.

“Jack would have looked ridiculous in a heavy suit in the desert. The linen safari suit moves him more towards Phryne visually,” Margot says.

Roadshow has released a selection of stills of the movie directed by Tony Tilse, scripted by Every Cloud Productions’ Deb Cox and produced by Fiona Eagger.

Miss Fisher admirers and non-fans embrace ‘Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears’
Nathan Davis and Essie Davis in Palm Springs.

The creators of Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears were always confident the movie would appeal to the legion of Essie Davis’ Phryne Fisher fans, but what about those who have never seen the TV series?

Any doubts soon vanished during the world premiere of the 1929-set adventure-murder mystery-romance, the first of three sold-out screenings at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Director Tony Tilse likened the atmosphere to a rock concert as 865 people whooped, hollered and laughed and gave a standing ovation at the end.

“People who had never seen the TV series told me how much they enjoyed it,” Tilse, who was set-up director on the series, tells If. “The enthusiasm and love for the film was overwhelming and very humbling.”

Every Cloud Productions’ Fiona Eagger, who co-created the franchise based on Kerry Greenwood’s novels with screenwriter Deb Cox,...

It’s a wrap for ‘Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears’
The final day of shooting (Photo credit: Tony Tilse)

Production of Every Cloud Productions’ Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears wrapped in Melbourne last week after a lengthy shoot in Morocco.

The final block of the 1920-set adventure starring Essie Davis, Rupert Penry-Jones, Nathan Page, Miriam Margolyes, Ashleigh Cummings and Hugo Johnstone-Burt was shot at the historic Werribee Park Mansion.

Director Tony Tilse posted a bunch of location photos during the shoot, to the delight of Miss Fisher fans who contributed more than $1 million in a crowd-funding campaign to the $8 million budget.

Scripted by Deb Cox, the plot follows Davis’ Miss Phryne Fisher as she rescues Shirin Abbas, a young Bedouin girl (Australian newcomer Izabella Yena) from prison in Jerusalem. The sleuth then sets out to unravel a decade-old mystery concerning priceless emeralds, ancient curses and the truth behind the disappearance of Shirin’s forgotten tribe.

British aristocrats caught up in ‘Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears’
On location in Atlas Studios Ouarzazate, Morocco.

Jacqueline McKenzie and Daniel Lapaine are playing a quintessentially British aristocratic couple in Miss Fisher & the Crypt of Tears, the feature film spin-off of the ABC series and novels by Kerry Greenwood, which is now shooting in Morocco.

Lord and Lady Lofthouse are old friends of Essie Davis’ Miss Phryne Fisher, who rescues Shirin Abbas, a young Bedouin girl (Australian newcomer Izabella Yena) from prison in Jerusalem and then sets out to find priceless emeralds and to solve the suspicious disappearance of Shirin’s tribe.

Lapaine’s character Lord ‘Lofty’ Lofthouse is described as a man of easygoing charm, the product of generations of wealthy British aristocracy, who served as a high-ranking officer in the Palestinian and Sinai campaigns of World War One. His late parents knew Phyrne’s Aunt Prudence (Miriam Margolyes).

His devoted wife Lady Eleanor is attractive, elegant and civilised.

California's entire earthquake fault line goes haywire, with 9-point-plus shocks on the Jerry Lee Lewis Rigor Mortis scale! The geological wipeouts include Boulder Dam, downtown Los Angeles and most of the San Francisco peninsula. ‘San Andreas’ Review
Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Paul Giamatti, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson, Will Yun Lee | Written by Carlton Cuse, Andre Fabrizio, Jeremy Passmore | Directed by Brad Peyton

If there was ever a genre of movie that benefited from advances in computer generated effects, it has to be the disaster movie. What better way to destroy cities than to take the real locations then virtually tear them apart?

In San Andreas, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as Ray Gaines, a helicopter rescue pilot for the Los Angeles Fire Department. When a huge earthquake rips its way up the San Andreas fault and his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) finds herself trapped in San Francisco, Ray and his estranged wife Emma (Carla Gugino) must save her before an even bigger impending earthquake rips the city apart.

While most of the marketing for San Andreas quite rightly puts the...

Phryne Fisher and a curious case of sexism
If conservative elements within the Australian screen industry had had their way, Miss Fisher.s Murder Mysteries either may never have made it to the screen, or the protagonist could have been a very different character.

The issue? Some people who controlled the purse strings objected to Phryne Fisher.s free-wheeling, no-strings-attached love life.

Every Cloud Productions. Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger, co-creators of the popular 1929-set ABC show starring Essie Davis, Nathan Page, Hugo Johnstone-Burt and Ashleigh Cummings, encountered. industry sexism- from males and females-. during development and production of the first series.

.Early in our development process, Phryne.s morality was queried by some in the long chain of investors that Australian television series need in order to be realised,. Cox writes in the latest edition of Aftrs' Lumina magazine, which is dedicated to gender equality in the screen industry.

.Was she too promiscuous? Should her sexual encounters...

‘San Andreas’ is a hilariously big disaster
San Andreas

Written by Carlton Cuse

Directed by Brad Peyton

USA, 2015

San Andreas is not a good movie. Let’s get this out of the way right up front. It is a colossal pile of total garbage. It is also a lot of fun. The filmmakers throw so much wholesale destruction at the audience it produces a giddy thrill every time skyscrapers fall like dominoes or the Golden Gate Bridge is destroyed by a tsunami. However, amidst the explosions and set pieces there is a woefully predictable and hilarious plot which is lousy with hackneyed dialogue, clichéd characters and old fashioned heteronormative gender roles.

Ray (Dwayne Johnson) is a fire and rescue helicopter pilot estranged from his wife Emma (Carla Gugino) and his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario). A mega-earthquake hits California’s San Andreas Fault which takes down Los Angeles, and after a daring escape from a collapsing skyscraper, Ray...

New San Andreas Movie Delivered Great Thrills,Suspense,Drama & More
New Line Cinema (Warner Bros) and Village Roadshow Pictures released their new action/thriller flick, "San Andreas," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was excellent, serving up a ton of thrilling and suspenseful scenes. It stars: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Giamatti, Carla Gugino, Kylie Minogue, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, and Art Parkinson. The movie opens up with a hardcore, suspenseful scene right off the bat when a young teenage girl gets caught in a San Fernando Valley rock slide, causing her car to get stuck on the side of a canyon with just mere moments to spare before she plunged to her freaking death. Chief Raymond 'Ray' Gaines (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) and his team is sent to rescue her in a helicopter just in the nick of time. From there, the next big earthquake goes down at the Hoover Dam,...

Film Review: ‘San Andreas’ Loads Its Story with Too Many Faults
Chicago – The best way, perhaps the only way, to enjoy the disaster movie “San Andreas” is to check your brain at the door, or better yet leave it at home for safekeeping. Bringing new meaning to the term mindless entertainment, “San Andreas” dares its audience to turn off their minds, and enjoy the ride.

Rating: 3.0/5.0

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a helicopter pilot and military vet conducting search and rescues in Los Angeles. He’s also a soon to be divorced dad suffering with a sense of loss over a deceased daughter he couldn’t save. Meanwhile, estranged wife Emma (Carla Gugino) has moved in with an insanely rich new boyfriend Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd), just as their daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) is heading off to school. And just as his world seems to be crumbling around him, cue the earthquake that sends the world (at least L.A. and San Francisco) crumbling around him.

Film Review: Terribly Scripted ‘San Andreas’ With Dwayne Johnson a Heartless Special Effects Spectacle
Chicago – When the story is as weak as the film’s fault lines and the character development never develops, the problem with blowing $100 million mostly on special effects is all you’re left with is unintelligent disaster porn.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

Aside from the visual spectacle, “San Andreas” fails fantastically to be anything remotely smart. It’s not even a show piece for Dwayne Johnson’s attempt at rebranding himself into a legitimate, dramatic actor. And very little about it is surprising, new or anything most of us couldn’t write in our sleep.

While “San Andreas” is trying to engage our sense of survival, it doesn’t play to an everyday fear that most of us ever experience. At least “Deep Impact,” “Armageddon” and the like had stories that I can actually remember. This one will soon be forgotten.

I actually started to count the amount of cheesy one-liners that caused...

San Andreas – The Review
I’d gladly pay $12 to again watch San Francisco reduced to rubble in the exhilarating, mother-of-all-disaster movies San Andreas. Director Brad Peyton’s popcorn epic closely mirrors the films of Roland Emmerich (especially 2012 but also The Day After Tomorrow), with the protagonists having to venture far from safety to rescue wayward loved ones caught up in the chaos. If you go simply to see the left coast get hammered by an angry bursts of unstoppable power, trust me, you won’t leave disappointed.

The recipe hasn’t changed much since the days of tasty Irwin Allen disaster meatballs like The Towering Inferno and Earthquake. In San Andreas, Dwayne Johnson plays Ray Gaines, an La Fire Department first-responder separated from his wife Emma (Carla Gugino) after a daughter’s drowning leaves him racked with guilt. Emma is ready to move in with her wealthy architect boyfriend Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd), while daughter...

“San Andreas” continues to showcase Dwayne Johnson as a top tier action hero
We have more of almost everything at the movies these days, with one glaring exception: we don’t have nearly as many action heroes as we used to. Sure, there are plenty of action films opening with stars or up and comers in leading roles, saving the day, but very few true “action heroes”. One notable modern exception is Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a certified A-list star of the action genre. He’s come a long way from just being The Rock, either in wrestling or his first on screen roles, but even removed from that, he’s a charismatic screen presence that holds the action hero title these days with aplomb. This week, he further cements his status with the disaster movie San Andreas. In San Andreas, we get west coast spin on the disaster movie, leaving New York City alone for a moment to focus in on California.

San Andreas Review
San Andreas: the Pompeii of 2015. Now wait! Before you go jumping off of a San Francisco skyscraper, let me assure you that my comment doesn’t carry a negative connotation. I mean, it’s not exactly an award-worthy compliment, but what I’m saying is that Brad Peyton’s latest disaster flick could have been a Hell of a lot worse (yes, Pompeii is Passable). You can thank Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for that, his ready-to-burst-at-the-seems shirt choice, and the millions of Californian extras who gave their lives in the making of San Andreas. Because what better reminder of life’s fragility is there than toppling buildings and eighty-foot tsunamis leveling entire American coastlines?

But this isn’t a movie solely built on scientific research, the menacing activation of the San Andreas fault line, and repugnant businessmen who kill other people to ensure their own safety (we’ll get to this later). Heavens no!

'San Andreas' (2015) Movie Review
Has it ever occurred to studios and filmmakers that if they were to simply snip 10-15 minutes of forced tension from their "disaster porn" blockbusters it would not only tighten their narrative, but improve the level of enjoyment and save them several millions of dollarsc In the case of San Andreas, buildings would still fall, the Earth's surface would still roll, Paul Giamatti would still survive while his subordinates die, Alexandre Daddario would still fit nicely in a tank top and Dwayne Johnson would still be required to perform feats of strength to save those he loves. Win-win... rightc After all, it isn't as if San Andreas is all that different from any other movie of this sort. Destruction on a large scale (Los Angeles, San Francisco and Bakersfield are laid to waste), characters narrowly escaping a variety of un-escapable situations, fingertip survival, the "He left me!" moment and the...

Dwayne Johnson in Terremoto: La falla de San Andrés (2015)
Review: Dwayne Johnson shines but earthquake takes center stage in 'San Andreas'
Dwayne Johnson in Terremoto: La falla de San Andrés (2015)
"San Andreas" is a very silly movie. Then again, disaster movies are almost always silly. That's just the nature of the beast. They're all roughly the same, and they end up as narrative excuses for mayhem and little more. Carlton Cuse's screenplay for "San Andreas" (apparently written on a napkin during a "Bates Motel" lunch break) is no exception, and if you are curious about whether or not you should see the film, look at the trailer. Do you want to watch California shake to pieces? Yes? Then see the movie, because it absolutely lives up to that promise. Do you want anything else from the movie? You may come up short. First of all, there is no scene in this film where The Rock punches an earthquake. For that reason alone, I have to take a full letter grade off. Instead, Dwayne Johnson plays Ray, who heads up a rescue team in La.

Dwayne Johnson in Terremoto: La falla de San Andrés (2015)
San Andreas review: Can Mother Nature stop The Rock?
Dwayne Johnson in Terremoto: La falla de San Andrés (2015)
Director: Brad Peyton; Screenwriter: Carlton Cuse; Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Paul Giamatti, Kylie Minogue, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson; Running time: 114 mins; Certificate: 12A

Harnessing the spirit of Irwin Allen's disaster movie classics of the '70s, San Andreas pits Dwayne Johnson against Mother Nature in a blockbuster epic that throws everything and the kitchen sink at the WWE star.

He plays Ray Gaines, an La Fire Department first-responder who's estranged from his wife Emma (Carla Gugino) after a family tragedy leaves him racked with guilt. Emma has moved on with architect Daniel (Ioan Gruffudd), while daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) struggles to adjust to life without dad. Running parallel to this is Paul Giamatti as Lawrence Hayes, a seismologist who cracks technology to predict earthquakes and sees the carnage forthcoming.

San Andreas is pretty much exactly what you'd expect based on the film's trailers and...

Atlanta Readers: Win Passes to See San Andreas
Remember when good, old-fashioned disaster in movies didn’t come from superheroes or killer robots, but instead from Mother Earth? San Andreas will be the latest film to show what happens when the planet turns against us and instead of relying on the Red Cross or Fema, it’s up to one man to save the day. We might just have a chance when that man is Dwayne Johnson. The story finds his character out to save his ex-wife (Carla Gugino) and daughter (Alexandra Daddario), and while I’m not sure how the flick turns out, I would feel pretty safe with my fate in The Rock’s hands. I’m pleased to announce we’re giving away 25 admit-two passes to the Atlanta screening of San Andreas. To enter for a chance to see the movie early and for free, send an e-mail to Collider.Passes@gmail.com with the...

'San Andreas' TV Spot: You Can't Hide from an Earthquake
Dwayne Johnson in Terremoto: La falla de San Andrés (2015)
A massive earthquake unlike any ever felt in the U.S. could even impact the East Coast warns a new TV spot for San Andreas. The footage we've seen so far has only shown how the West Coast has been affected by this disaster, but perhaps we'll see how other areas of the U.S. are handling the earth-shaking occurrence once the movie hits later this month.

Dwayne Johnson Stars in First San Andreas Trailer
Warner Bros. Pictures has released the brand new trailer for next summer’s disaster-suspense film San Andreas.

The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson and Paul Giamatti.

Shot on location in The Gold Coast and Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and in Los Angeles and San Francisco, San Andreas is slated to open in theatres in both 3D and 2D format on Friday, May 29, 2015.

This isn’t the first film where Southern California has been destroyed on the silver screen. San Francisco (1936) is based on the April 18, 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Directed by Woody Van Dyke, the drama stars Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald, and Spencer Tracy.

Airport originated the 1970s disaster film genre and audiences were deluged with a series of movies including the original Earthquake (1974). These films always included a huge cast, where many of the actors usually perished by the climax.
