The Old Guard 2 debuted earlier this month after an unexpectedly long delay, but it was met with poor reviews and, seemingly, a lack of interest from audiences.

The movie has already lost its number one spot on the Netflix viewership charts, which is almost unheard of for a film of its size.

Speaking with EW, Mahoney admitted that they had a difficult time executing the idea of transferring immortality without creating any plot holes for the audience. “We were possessed by a demonic spirit, that's how overtaken we were with that discussion,” she shared. “Fortunately, we have incredible actors, and we just had to find a way to make it truthful and make it make sense for them.

It was psychological. The first two weeks of it was sitting down with the pilot and building trust. It was slow moves. But by the end, I was hanging off a helicopter, so who cares?”

During the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, since we had become acutely aware of our mortality, I guess I began treating all cinema pretty leniently. What was great seemed like a masterpiece, and what was “mid” seemed pretty damn amazing. Now, I remember watching The Old Guard as soon as it dropped on Netflix, and it came across as this profound exploration of life and death. While there were action sequences to spice things up, what I found to be really interesting was the weight that all these invincible “gods” were carrying after witnessing countless man-made atrocities. They were borderline suicidal because they wanted their boon to end. And, of course, their search for a new purpose so that they could keep going was relatable. Upon a rewatch, yeah, the whole thing feels pretty generic, with the editing and choreography of the action sequences looking particularly ugly. 5 years have passed since its release,...

The Old Guard 2, the sequel to the Covid-era Netflix streaming hit, continues to waste our time in more ways than one. The action is dull — especially when it involves the actors — and only rises to “acceptable” when the stunt team takes over.

The script, particularly the dialogue, is yawn-inducing, making me grateful I’m not immortal. I can’t imagine watching this intellectual property get recycled for centuries. Then again, maybe it can be — since the writers have conveniently discovered a new storytelling device to write themselves out of any corner.
