When most people think of actor Matt Damon, they might picture him as Jason Bourne from "The Bourne Identity" and its sequels, or maybe as the titular character in the terrific crime thriller "The Talented Mr. Ripley." They might even think of him in puppet form (voiced by Trey Parker) from Parker and Matt Stone's "Team America: World Police." They probably wouldn't think about his small role in Steven Soderbergh's experimental 2018 horror film "Unsane," but they honestly should, because "Unsane" is an incredible little gem that deserves more appreciation. Sure, Damon has been in a ton of great movies, but were any of them shot entirely on an iPhone?
"Unsane" tends to be a little polarizing, with some critics and audiences absolutely panning it (including /Film's own review), but viewer perspective is everything with this one because its horror is so deeply specific and personal. The film follows...

If one knows about the evolution of film camera technology, it can be fun to visually trace changing cinematic aesthetics. There was a time, very early in cinema history, when film cameras were so enormous and fragile that they couldn't be moved too freely. Filmmakers were forced to shoot nothing but wide, locked-down shots. Also, cameras could only hold so much physical film, forcing each take to be carefully choreographed in order to save the previous celluloid resource. Eventually, cameras became a little more limber, and engineers found ways to mount them on dollies, cranes, etc., allowing filmmakers to create more dynamic, fluid motions. Cameras continued to get smaller. Camera operators could pick them up and walk around with them. When the Steadicam was invented, a camera could now be safely mounted onto the camera operator's body, allowing for the most dynamic range of motion yet.

Emmy voters sure know how to take a bite of the Apple. As the Television Academy unveiled nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards on Tuesday, Apple TV+’s hits “Severance” and “The Studio” led the tallies for both drama and comedy series, respectively.
HBO Max, meanwhile, led the overall network tally at 142 — thanks to shows including “The Penguin” (the most in limited/anthology), “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us” and “Hacks.” That’s up from the outlet’s previous best, 140 in 2022.
But “Severance,” which scored 27 noms, and “The Studio,” which landed 23 noms, were undeniable. In particular, “The Studio” has now earned the most comedy nominations in a single year, ever — tying Season 3 of “The Bear,” which earned 23 nods in 2024.

Andrew Garfield has officially signed on for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming feature “Artificial” at Amazon MGM.
Garfield joins “Anora” breakout and recent Oscar nominee Yura Borisov in the feature, which is described as a “comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence.” Simon Rich (“An American Pickle”) wrote the script and will produce alongside Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford as well as Jennifer Fox.
“Artificial” reunites Garfield, Guadagnino and Amazon MGM Studios. Guadagnino recently directed “After the Hunt,” starring Julia Roberts, Garfield and Ayo Edebiri, which the studio is releasing in theaters Oct. 10. Early reports claimed that, alongside Garfield and Borisov, Monica Barbaro was also circling a lead role in “Artificial,” and asserted that the film centered around AI company OpenAI and the period in 2023 where its CEO Sam Altman was fired and rehired in just a few days.
“Artificial” comes at a busy period for Garfield.

After 30 years, if Apollo 13 had you holding your breath and biting your nails when Tom Hanks said, “Houston, we have a problem,” then buckle up, we’ve got a whole galaxy of movies you’ll want to launch into next. These space flicks bring the drama, the danger, and yes, the floating-in-zero-gravity slow-motion shots we all secretly love.
Some are based on real NASA-level heroics, others are full-blown sci-fi rollercoasters with exploding planets and rogue AI, but they all have one thing in common: they’ll keep you stuck to your seat like Velcro in a spaceship.
From astronauts having identity crises to missions gone sideways faster than a rocket launch, these movies pack thrills, emotion, and a lot of “don’t push that button!” moments. So, if Apollo 13 was your jam, these 15 picks are your next mission. No space suit required, just snacks, curiosity, and maybe a stress ball.

It’s been a quiet year for Ryan Gosling thus far after starring in Barbie and The Fall Guy in 2023 and 2024, but another of the star’s more recent films just got an exciting streaming update. Gosling stars alongside Jason Clarke and Kyle Chandler in First Man, the 2018 space biopic detailing the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong and his mission to the Moon on July 20, 1969. First Man had previously not been streaming anywhere, but Prime Video has announced that the film is now streaming for free with ads on the platform. First Man, which also stars Claire Foy, grossed $105 million at the box office against a $59 million budget, and it even won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. It also holds scores of 87% from critics and 68% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

In today’s world, where streaming platforms dominate, a bad Rotten Tomatoes score can make or break a show. But what happens when critics and audiences completely disagree on a project? The latest example of this growing divide is Tires, a Netflix comedy featuring Shane Gillis. While critics have completely sidelined it, fans can’t seem to stop watching.
What’s also interesting is that this same critic–audience gap hurt high-profile series like The Crown Season 6 and The Crowded Room as well. Let’s break down how Tires has exposed a deeper problem in TV reviews – and why it matters now more than ever.
The Crown S6 and The Crowded Room Faced the Same Rotten Tomatoes Problem as Tires
When The Crown returned for its sixth and final season, fans were absolutely thrilled. After all, this series had dominated the awards season with its strong storytelling and great ensemble.

Ten years ago, Joanna Eatwell received an Emmy nomination for period-costume design for “Wolf Hall,” the BBC/PBS adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed 2009 novel about the rise of Thomas Cromwell in the court of King Henry VIII. Eatwell returned for the sequel, “Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light,” which covers the third and final book in Mantel’s Cromwell trilogy and picks up right where the 2015 series left off: at the May 1536 execution of Henry’s second of five wives, Anne Boleyn (Claire Foy).
“I think we all returned with an understanding and familiarity with the characters and story, which was creatively liberating,” Eatwell said. “It was a fairly seamless transition between shows despite the decade between, in part, I think, because the majority of crew and cast returned.”

Claire Foy ruled as Queen Elizabeth II on Netflix’s The Crown, but when it came to paychecks, her co-star Matt Smith took home the crown. Back when the series first launched, fans were stunned to learn that Smith, who played Prince Philip, earned more than Foy, despite her leading role and Emmy-winning performance.
The news sparked a major conversation about gender pay gaps in Hollywood, especially considering Foy’s central presence in the show. While producers later reportedly apologized and compensated her retroactively, the damage was already done.

Andrew Garfield is in talks to join the cast of Jason Bourne director Paul Greengrass' next movie. The Spider-Man: No Way Home star will replace Matthew McConaughey in The Rage.
Deadline reports that Garfield will play a character loosely inspired by the real life revolutionary Wat Tyler, though the website cautioned the inspiration for the Tick, Tick... Boom! actor's character hasn't been confirmed. Regardless, The Rage will take place during the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England, where a group of protesters marched from Canterbury to London to demand socio economic reforms and a cancellation of the poll tax from King Richard II.

If Garfield is playing Wat Tyler, he would be following the footsteps of Anthony Hopkins — who played the rebel in 1969's Medieval England: The Peasants Revolt. Benedict Cumberbatch was originally attached to play Tyler in The Rage before McConaughey came on board.

Beneath all the sparkle of red carpets and fancy award nights, there’s a less glamorous story that’s been quietly brewing for years. Nope, it’s not a juicy plot twist of a thriller show or a surprise sequel of a movie—it’s the truth about unequal pay in Hollywood. [Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light series finale.] Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall book trilogy puts historical figure Thomas Cromwell into a more favorable spotlight. The Tudor-era figure is known for masterminding the separation of the Church of England from Rome and playing a major role in the English Reformation era. But even his close bond with King Henry VIII couldn’t save Cromwell from the same fate that befell two of Henry’s wives. The series finale of Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light started with a Cromwell and Anne Boleyn parallel and ended with the former’s demise. Despite all his knowledge of Henry (Damian Lewis), Mark Rylance‘s Cromwell held out hope that Henry would change his mind about his execution, just like Anne (Claire Foy) did in the Wolf Hall 2015 finale that was recreated in The Mirror and the Light‘s first episode. After Joel's death in Sunday's episode of The Last of Us, Pedro Pascal's Emmy category placement remains up in the air for now, but there is one category he most definitely will not be submitted in: Best Drama Guest Actor.
You might have missed it, but the TV Academy modified eligibility in the guest categories in January, one of its 2025 rule changes. The general guest eligibility rule remains unchanged: Performers can submit in guest if they appear in less than 50 percent of a show's season. The new addendum states that a performer who has been nominated or has won in a lead or supporting category is not eligible to submit in a guest category for playing the same role on the same show in subsequent years; they can only submit in lead or supporting.
The tweak is to prevent easy nominations and wins and name-checking, which is common in the guest races.

It took a decade of maneuvering to finally complete the television adaptation of novelist Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall trilogy with the co-stars back on screen, executive producer Colin Callender said at Saturday’s Deadline Contenders TV panel in Los Angeles.

Irish actress Nicola Coughlan, known to hordes of Bridgerton fans as Penelope Featherington/Lady Whistledown and as Clare Devlin to Derry Girls enthusiasts, will be honored at this year’s French TV festival Canneseries with the annual Konbini Commitment Award.
The award, presented by the French online media group, honors talent who have distinguished themselves “by the artistic quality and societal, innovative and/or revolutionary dimension of their work.” Previous winners include Sex Education creator Laurie Nunn, American Horror Story actress Michaela Jaé Rodriguez and Transparent showrunner Joey Soloway.

The "Harry Potter" TV series still needs to cast most of its major characters, but news just broke that Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor John Lithgow is circling the role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.
This was exclusively reported by Deadline, although HBO — the network behind this upcoming series based on the hit novels by Joanne Kathleen Rowling, aka "J.K. Rowling," as well as the massively successful film franchise — did give the outlet a terse, non-committal statement. "We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation," HBO said. "As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals."

Here’s Why This The Twilight Zone Episode Was Banned For Decades(Photo Credit – YouTube)
The Twilight Zone had its fair share of eerie episodes, but one stood out for the wrong reasons. The Encounter was yanked from syndication for 52 years. The reason? Problematic themes that sparked outrage, especially within the Japanese American community. And while it finally resurfaced in 2016, its history remains just as haunting as the stories the series told.
Airing in 1964, The Encounter focused on two men — a World War II veteran named Fenton (Neville Brand) and a Japanese American man, Arthur Takamori (George Takei). What started as a simple conversation spiraled into tension, with Fenton’s bitterness toward Japan fueling hostility. The episode’s supernatural twist involved a katana Fenton took from a soldier he killed, hinting that the sword carried the original owner’s malice, driving the men into a violent confrontation.

Did Claire Foy Earn Less Than Matt Smith For Her Role In Netflix’s The Crown? (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Guess what? Even playing the Queen doesn’t guarantee royal treatment. The Crown’s Claire Foy got paid less than her on-screen husband Matt Smith. The reason: Smith had Doctor Who fame, and apparently, that carried more financial weight than portraying Britain’s most powerful woman. The pay gap went public, outrage followed, and Netflix scrambled to clean up the mess.
After the backlash, Foy reportedly received about £200K ($274K) in backpay—a late but necessary fix, The Guardian reported. Producers insisted the issue wouldn’t repeat and promised that “no one gets paid more than the Queen” in future seasons. But by then, Foy had already wrapped up her reign as The Crown prepared to move into the 1970s with a new cast.
The irony? This wasn’t some low-budget...

Back in the day, it was a special privilege to make a movie. The top-quality film cameras were expensive and difficult to come by, and homemade technology was primitive and a glaringly inferior product. Now, anyone can direct a film like Unsane, a gripping, mean, and tight-as-a-drum psychological horror-thriller shot on an iPhone. The average person is unlikely to reach the same heights as the 2018 film, as it was directed by one of the greats, Steven Soderbergh. A major league director in Soderbergh going to the proverbial minor league by deploying independent filmmaking tactics seems like an unnecessary stunt, but his overlooked horror film, starring the exceptional Claire Foy, proved that, with a precise vision behind the handheld camera, iPhone photography can be just as visually dynamic as traditional film or digital photography. As Soderbergh's latest project, a supernatural horror titled Presence, hits theaters, it's worth looking back on one...

This post contains major spoilers for "All of Us Strangers."
As Hollywood continues to capitalize on our nostalgia-obsessed monoculture with "Harry Potter" reboot shows and superhero movies stuffed with cameos from erstwhile stars, a series of much more thoughtful films have been quietly probing the darker side of nostalgia. Charlotte Wells quietly broke hearts in 2022 with "Aftersun," a film that gilds its elegy for lost innocence with the unmistakable textures of a '90s childhood. Then, with its unique aesthetic, "Skinamarink" upended the very concept of nostalgia, creating a haunting tapestry of childhood images shot in the director's own childhood home. That same year, another film shot in the house where its director grew up continued this trend of examining the dark underbelly of nostalgia.
"All of Us Strangers" was written and directed by Andrew Haigh, who loosely based the story on the 1987 novel "Strangers" by Japanese writer Taichi Yamada.

The Television Academy is implementing some changes to their rules ahead of the 2025 Emmys awards ceremony later this year.
On Wednesday (January 8), it was revealed that the Academy had made a big change about how actors can be nominated in Lead and Guest Actor categories.
They also revealed several other changes to the rules, which will be implemented between this year’s ceremony and the 2026 one.

According to reporting by Variety, the largest change to the rules is that actors will not be able to compete in both the Lead Actor and Guest Actor categories for the same role over the years.
This is something that stars like Claire Foy have done. The actress played Queen Elizabeth in The Crown and won an Emmy in the Lead Actress category in 2018. She later competed in the Guest Category and was nominated for cameo appearances in the show as the Queen.

Perhaps we should call it the “Queen Elizabeth rule.” The Television Academy has unveiled a few new Emmy Awards rules tweaks, including one that should impact the guest performer categories. Under the new rule, any performer who had previously been nominated or has won in a lead or supporting category can no longer shift to one of the guest performer races in the same role in future years.
That has become a more common occurrence in this prestige TV age, when actors often play a high-profile role for a few years before departing — with the promise of still making short guest appearances in subsequent seasons.
A good example is Claire Foy, who won the lead drama actress Emmy in 2018 for “The Crown.” She left that show after two seasons (as her role as Princess Elizabeth/Queen Elizabeth was transferred to Olivia Colman and then Imelda Staunton). But Foy would continue...

Claire Foy earned Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama Series nominations for her acclaimed performance in “The Crown” in both 2017 and 2018. She then won a Guest Actress in a Drama Series Emmy in 2021 for the same character in the same series. Foy is not the same actress who has accomplished this, Ron Cephas Jones also pulled this feat off for “This Is Us.” Moving forward, this will no longer be allowed.

Claire Foy and Ron Cephas Jones won Emmys for their lead role in The Crown and supporting role in This Is Us, respectively. They went on to win another Emmy each for reprising their roles as guest stars on the same shows. That won’t be allowed moving forward.
The Television Academy today announced rules changes for the 77th Emmy Awards in 2025, which redefines eligibility for Guest Performers to exclude those who already have been nominated for the role in the lead or supporting categories.
There is also an expanded eligibility in the Directing category, allowing helmers to submit their work on multiple series, as well as tweaks in eligibility for Casting and Main Title Theme Music submissions.

The Television Academy announced rules changes on Wednesday impacting both the 77th Emmy Awards and the 78th in 2025 and 2026, respectively. For this year, the changes expand eligibility in the directing category and redefine eligibility for guest performers, while next year’s changes impact casting and music.
The guest performer change closes a loophole that permitted actors to be nominated in multiple categories for playing the same role in the same series. One example was Claire Foy, who was Emmy nominated as Best Lead Drama Actress for The Crown for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in 2017 and who won as lead in 2018. She then won the Guest Actress in a Drama Series trophy in 2021 for the same role on the same show and received another nomination in that category for playing the Queen in 2024.
