Graham Moore (The Imitation Game, The Outfit) and Jacqueline Hoyt (The Leftovers, The Underground Railroad) will serve as co-showrunners on the series. James Ponsoldt (Shrinking) is set to direct. Quentin Tarantino planning making-of books on each of his films
Image
The Making Of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood will be the first of ten new Quentin Tarantino books about the making of his films. More here.

He might not be in a rush to make another film, but Quentin Tarantino seems to be very much enjoying his work in books. His latest projects – and there will be lots of projects – cover a series of books he’s intending to write about the making of each of his films.

He’s inked a deal with Insight Editions, that’ll see him working with Jay Glennie to create ten different books across the ten films he’ll have made as a director.

The idea is for these to be coffee table books, although my own personal coffee table is reserved strictly for coffee. That notwithstanding, we can assume that these will be hefty tomes with lots of pictures, and a little...

After Francis Coppola Meltdown, Netflix Snags Natalie Portman And Mark Ruffalo for ‘Good Sex’
Image
Some time ago, veteran director Martin Scorsese stated that Marvel movies were not what you would call “Cinema” and that they were just some shiny lights against a green screen.

Well, Francis Ford Coppola, who is the director of The Godfather trilogy, went one step ahead. This time, however, Natalie Portman and Mark Ruffalo came to the rescue of the MCU as they had some apt reply to say to Ford Coppola, who seemed to call these movies… despicable.

When Natalie Portman and Mark Ruffalo defended the MCU!

We all remember when the war between Martin Scorsese and the MCU happened. The veteran director didn’t consider those movies as cinema and refused to acknowledge that they were any good.

Well, although there was a revolt to Scorsese’s statements, the world didn’t revolt much. At the time,...

Mark Ruffalo joins Natalie Portman on exciting new Lena Dunham Netflix project
Image
Mark Ruffalo is a star. That hasn't always been the case. He has had a fine career and is a great actor, but he didn't begin by being a consistent movie star. He is now. He shows up in far too many great projects to be eschewed, as far as how many eyeballs he brings to screens now.

Of course, he remains more of a character actor, but there is no shame in that. Real talent lies in bringing out the excellence of well-drawn characters even if they are not part of the Marvel universe. There are other fantastic roles and other award-worthy parts to play.

One of these might be coming to Netflix soonish. We already knew that Natalie Portman and Lena Dunham were working on a film project titled Good Sex, where Portman's character is trying to find love, only to find herself torn between a 50-something and a 20-something.

Strong Festival, Soft Market at Cannes Enters Final Stretch
Image
Politics continues to trump business at this year’s Cannes film festival, with little in the way of deals out of the Marché, but lots of activist agitation on the red carpet and beyond.

Cannes’ first weekend, traditionally the period when the bidding wars begin and the first big buys are announced, has been almost frighteningly quiet. There was a single big deal — Mubi’s $24 million multi-territory deal, including North America, the U.K., Latin America and other countries — for the Lynne Ramsay’s Jennifer Lawrence Robert Pattinson starrer Die, My Love. It was a major deal for a finished film but also threw into sharp relief the lack of major pre-sales at Cannes so far, despite a market featuring jam-packed with hot packages.

The cautious, wait-and-see approach from buyers — already in evidence in Sundance and Berlin — continues amid growing uncertainty over financing and distribution models and, let’s face it,...

‘Squid Game’ Season 3, Lena Dunham’s ‘Too Much’ Set for Inaugural Italian Global Series Festival
Image
First looks at Squid Game season 3 and Lena Dunham’s Too Much, and special honors for the likes of Lost star Evangeline Lilly and legendary composer Giorgio Moroder will be part of the inaugural Italian Global Series Festival (Igsf), taking place in Riccione and Rimini, June 21-28.

During a Sunday event held during the Cannes Film Festival in the French mecca of film, organizers unveiled program highlights, competitive sections, special events and masterclasses, and the seven recipients of the inaugural Maximo Awards for Excellence.

“The Italian Global Series Festival is dedicated to showcasing both Italian and International series content and is a reimagining of the highly successful RomaFictionFest, which ran for 10 years until 2017,” organizers said.

In its first year, the Igsf will screen 28 new series in its competitive strands, which will compete for Maximo awards, which organizers hope will become something like an Italian equivalent to the Emmy Awards.

Among special presentations,...

World Premieres, New Awards, David Lynch Homage, Netflix Shows & Nordic Drama: Inside Plans For The Italian Global Series Festival
Image
Italian drama event – the Italian Global Series Festival – kicks off this summer with a new awards offering. The Igsf organizers told Deadline they hope winning one of their new accolades will become the Italian equivalent of landing an Emmy. The U.S. has various awards for TV, the UK has the BAFTAs, France has the Césars, Spain the Goyas and so on. With Igsf’s Maximos, Italy’s TV folk will have a new chance to get their hands on some awards hardware.

Location and timing are crucial for any festival. The Igsf will be held in Riccione and Rimini in June – two popular summer beachside locales. Its first edition will feature nine world premieres including Italian dramas Alex Bravo, Poliziotto A Modo Suo and Noi Del Rione Sanità from Italy, epic Euro co-production Rise of the Raven, Spanish language drama Los Sin Nombre, and Who Almost Killed Melody? from Canada.

Cannes at the Midpoint: Weak Dealmaking, Strong Filmmaking
Image
Politics continues to trump business at this year’s Cannes film festival, with little in the way of deals out of the Marché, but lots of activist agitation on the red carpet and beyond. Cannes’ first weekend, traditionally the period when the bidding wars begin and the first big buys are announced, has been

almost frighteningly quiet.

The cautious, wait-and-see approach from buyers — already in evidence in Sundance and Berlin — continues amid growing uncertainty over financing and distribution models and, let’s face it, over the future of the movie business itself.

Donald Trump’s plan to impose tariffs on “foreign-made” films, launched just ahead of Cannes, went off like a bomb under the already shaky foundations of the indie industry. Just how much damage has been done will only be possible to assess post-market when the dust has settled.

“The idea of tariffs is spooking people, especially financiers,” said one veteran indie producer.

‘10 Things I Hate About You’ Director Plans Sequel Trilogy With Nod To Heath Ledger: “He Deserves To Be Loved”
Image
Gil Junger, the director of 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), is planning a sequel trilogy with a nod to Heath Ledger.

The teen romantic comedy in which Ledger starred alongside Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik became a cult classic, and Junger wants to revisit its universe.

In a new interview, the filmmaker revealed he is co-writing a script alongside Naya Elle James that they have titled 10 Things I Hate About Dating. The film would be the first of three with subsequent installments titled 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

Although the film has not been greenlit, Junger tells People the sequel “is definitely in the works as a feature film. We’re developing it right now.”

10 Things I Hate About You is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Junger says Molière’s The Misanthrope would inspire his follow-up film.

Image
Another 10 Things I Hate About You is coming.

The beloved rom-com’s director Gil Junger recently told People magazine he is developing a follow-up movie with the original film’s producer, Andrew Lazar. Junger is also penning the script opposite Naya Elle James and they have “some pretty good ideas” to make the story into a trilogy, with the first project to be called 10 Things I Hate About Dating and then 10 Things I Hate About Marriage and 10 Things I Hate About Kids.

“10 Things I Hate About Dating is definitively in the works as a feature film,” Junger said. “We’re developing it right now.”

The 1999 film saw Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles in the starring roles as Patrick (Ledger) and Kat (Stiles) fall for each other unexpectedly. While the film hasn’t yet been approved, and casting hasn’t begun, the director admits he “would love to work with Julia again.

‘Wuthering Heights’ Casting Director Defends Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi as Leads: Movie Doesn’t Have to Be ‘Accurate’
Image
“Wuthering Heights” fans are already up in arms over Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of the Emily Brontë novel.

Controversy ensued when the two “Wuthering Heights” leads were first announced, with Jacob Elordi reuniting with his “Saltburn” writer/director to play Heathcliff and Margot Robbie (who produced Fennell’s prior two films through her LuckyChap banner) as Catherine. Was Robbie too old to play teen Catherine? Was Elordi the wrong casting for a character described in the novel as being “dark-skinned gipsy in aspect”? Add in the historically inaccurate wedding gown that Robbie wears in a first look at the film, and it seemed for some that the Brontë adaptation skewed from its source.

Now, “Wuthering Heights” casting director Kharmel Cochrane is defending her picks — and warning audiences that future reveals could social media into even more of a tizzy.

“There’s definitely going to be some English Lit fans that...

Kharmel Cochrane Talks Casting Lily-Rose Depp In ‘Nosferatu’ & Teases Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’: “Some English Lit Fans Are Not Going To Be Happy” — Sands Film Festival
Image
“I had to text Lily-Rose Depp and say I’m sorry,” casting director Kharmel Cochrane explained this afternoon during a Q&a session at Scotland’s Sands Film Festival.

The apology was on account of Cochrane dismissing Lily-Rose Depp as a serious contender for a leading role in Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu. The vampire remake is one of the many buzzy titles Cochrane has cast in recent years. Her other credits include Saltburn, Rye Lane, and Bob Marley: One Love.

“I had said absolutely no way to Lily-Rose Depp,” Cochrane continued, breaking down the Nosferatu casting process.

“I didn’t think she could act. I hadn’t seen anything that I thought showed she could act. And I’m not even bothered by the nepotism thing. I think that’s a whole other conversation. And then she auditioned. I was wrong. And I’ve got no shame in saying if I’m not right.
