The Game Awards hit record viewership with its 2024 show on Dec. 12, which drew an estimated 154 million global livestreams. That’s up 31% over the 2023 show at 118 million livestreams.

Per the Game Awards, which marked its 10-year anniversary with the 2024 show, the 2024 viewership high was reached with streams across YouTube, Twitch, Steam, TikTok Live, X, Instagram Live, and Facebook. Additionally, show hit its global viewership milestone amid a record number of platforms streaming in China including Bilbili, Huya, Weibo, WeChat, Douyin, Zhihu, DouYu, Baidu, NetEase Cc, Tencent Video, Qq, Kuishou, HeyBox; in South Korea or Chzzk and Soop, and NicoNico in Japan.

Unlike most other high-profile awards shows, the indie event hosted by gaming industry star Geoff Keighley does not have an exclusive streaming deal with a network or streaming service.

The top winner out of the 2024 Game Awards was “Astro Bot” from Team Asobi and PlayStation, which won four awards, including Game of the Year.

Nominations for the 2024 Game Awards, which honor the year’s most innovative, unique and impactful story-driven narratives in the gaming industry, were announced Monday.

Leading the pack is the popular Japanese RPG adventure series Final Fantasy VII Rebirth with a total number of seven nominations. Following the critical success of Rebirth, released earlier this year in February, the third and final game in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy is officially in active development. First reported by 4Gamer, the Japanese website revealed that during a recent appearance at the G-con 2024 convention in South Korea, Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that Square Enix hashed out the third game’s plot and overall concept, marking the pre-production finalization.

The Game Awards has set December 8th as the date for its ninth annual awards show, celebrating the best in video games. The ceremony will take place live and in-person from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles — streaming for free worldwide across more than 40 digital platforms including YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok Live. Imax will also partner with the show to create The Game Awards: The IMAX Experience, a live community event allowing gamers from around the world to experience The Game Awards, with additional details on that experience to be announced in the coming months.

On Wednesday, Amazon Prime Video unveiled Rupi Kaur Live, a one-hour original special from New York Times bestseller Rupi Kaur, which will become available for streaming in North America on August 27.

The special from the internationally renowned author, artist, and performer is a distinctive fusion of poetry, spoken word, music, and compelling visuals inspired by her poetry collections. In it, Kaur guides the audience through a journey centered on growth and healing, invoking humor, acknowledging heartache, and inspiring empowerment.
