The Life of Chuck, according to FlixPatrol, is now one of the most-watched movies on iTunes in the U.S. As of Aug. 10, it is up three spots on the iTunes chart and sits at No. 23. The film is ahead of Warfare (2025) and Happy Gilmore(1996) on PVOD.

2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. While there have been many disappointments this year, it does not mean that there have been no good movies released this year, and to prove that, we have compiled a list of the best movies that have come out in 2025 so far.

Mike Flanagan first gained attention with films such as Oculus and Absentia. Yet, the acclaimed filmmaker has found a seemingly perfect place to bring Stephen King’s terror to life. His take on such stories as Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game has proven successful for many of his fans. The filmmaker even announced he is bringing Carrie to the small screen as a series. However, with The Life of Chuck, Flanagan offers a different kind of King-inspired fantasy.

The genre-bending feature stars Tom Hiddleston, Jacob Tremblay, and Benjamin Pajak, all of whom take on the role of Charles “Chuck” Krantz, the mysterious title figure. Recently, I spoke with several members of the impressive cast. First up, I sat down with Matthew Lillard.

It’s important to note that The Life of Chuck isn’t a horror movie from Flanagan and King this time around, but that doesn’t mean the movie isn’t packed with beloved horror stars.

The big indies are out in force in a crowded market on another strong weekend for ticket sales with the domestic box office now up 26% versus 2024, according to Comscore. Neon is trying something new for the edgy brand with The Life Of Chuck. The Phoenician Scheme from Focus Features jumps to wide release. A24 and IFC have have horror films, and they’re all vying with big studio releases and some smaller independents.

“People are seeing a lot of different kinds of films,” said one distribution exec.

Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme is at no. 6 at the box office with an estimated $6.25 million weekend and a $7 million cume in a major week 2 expansion to 1,678 screens. The film starring Benicio del Toro clocked the best limited opening and per screen average of 2025 last week at 16 locations.

In 1843, the Danish philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard wrote in his journal a passage which has echoed throughout time ever since, albeit one which is often shortened for easier consumption. The abridged and paraphrased quote is: "Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards." The full passage laments the paradox inherent within this axiom:

The box office has kicked into high great with a steady flow of films, studio and independent. It’s getting crowded and smaller distributors are hoping the rush will really and truly spill into indie and specialty fare. Signs are good with excellent numbers for Focus Features’ The Phoenician Scheme last weekend, for A24’s Friendship last month and Sony Pictures Classics Jane Austen Wrecked My Life.

The Mike Flanagan-directed movie won the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, and it’s time for the public to check it out. “The Life of Chuck” – an adaptation of a short story from King’s “Let It Bleed” collection – stars Tom Hiddleston, Jacob Tremblay, Chiwetel Ejiofor and more and follows through three periods of one ordinary man’s life.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hiddleston opened up about his time on the set of Mike Flanagan's upcoming time-bending film The Life of Chuck. "I burned holes in my shoes. I was dancing out on the asphalt in Alabama, and by the time we'd finished, you could see my socks through the soles," Hiddleston recalled. "It was really fun."

The second King adaptation from Neon this year following Osgood Perkins’ blockbuster affair with The Monkey, The Life of Chuck explores the lighter side of King.

Although her role as Janice Haliday in Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck will involve plenty of dancing, the latest still released of Annalise Basso looks more serious than carefree. In it, Basso’s Janice stands opposite Tom Hiddleston’s titular character, Chuck Krantz, and the pair appears to be embroiled in a serious conversation. Although we can’t tell what they’re chatting about, it looks like Janice’s words are leaving a lasting mark on Chuck and vice versa, with each character deeply connected and attentive to what the other is saying.

The Life of Chuck will see its filmmaker, Flanagan, move away from his typical vein of horror and step into something else — something more existential yet still topped with a twist of the supernatural. It’s also a change for author Stephen King, who wrote the short story on which Flanagan’s production is based.

Off the back of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, there was a feeling that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck could be something really rather good. The film won TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, leading to buzz that the film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, given that 12 of the last 14 winners have gone on to do so.

Following a brief teaser, a poster and some promo stills, Neon has finally given us a proper look at Mike Flanagan's latest Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, which stars Tom Hiddleston in the lead role.

Though King is (obviously) best-known for his work in the horror genre, he has penned some notable sci-fi, fantasy, and even straightforward drama stories. The Life of Chuck is based on the legendary author's 2020 novella, and while it does contain some sci-fi elements, it is most definitely not a horror tale.

The movie had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024, where it won the People's Choice Award. Positive reviews followed, and the film currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The upcoming film The Life of Chuck (which Neon will be giving a theatrical release on June 6th) is the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing series adaptations of The Dark Tower and Carrie for Amazon Studios) – but it is not a horror movie. It's been a few decades since a Stephen King adaptation was designed with our tears in mind, but Mike Flanagan seems determined to break that streak with "The Life of Chuck." The new trailer for Flanagan's upcoming film just dropped from Neon, and while it doesn't reveal too much about the movie's plot, it does promise big emotions and a sweeping, lifetime-spanning story.

"The Life of Chuck" isn't autobiographical, but the sense one comes away with after watching the latest trailer is that it's King and Flanagan's answer to Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." We see flashes of a life filled with sweet mother figures and grandpa-types; dancing in the street; colorful, starry nights; and general scenes of out-of-context wonder. There's also a sense of unspoken melancholy -- we get the feeling that whatever is being withheld from audiences, it involves a bittersweet experience involving the circle of life.
