Stephen King's Best-Reviewed Movie in Years Is Blowing Up on PVOD
Image
Stephen King has been thrilling audiences for generations with his novels and feature film adaptations such as Carrie (1976) and Stand By Me (1986). In 2025, one of King’s most critically acclaimed films was released, and although it did not perform well at the box office, it is now finding new life on PVOD.

The Life of Chuck, according to FlixPatrol, is now one of the most-watched movies on iTunes in the U.S. As of Aug. 10, it is up three spots on the iTunes chart and sits at No. 23. The film is ahead of Warfare (2025) and Happy Gilmore(1996) on PVOD.

The feature film, based on King's novella The Life of Chuck from his 2020 collection titled If It Bleeds, grossed just $12.5 million globally after its June 2025 release. Despite its low box office numbers, the movie received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s “Certified Fresh” with an...

‘The Life of Chuck’: In and of Itself
Image
‘The Life of Chuck’ Contains Multitudes ‘The Life of Chuck’, based on Stephen King’s 2020 novella, director Mike Flanagan crafts a reverse-chronological odyssey through the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). It is an elegiac meditation on memory, mortality, and moments of transcendence. The story begins at the end- amidst Chuck’s final moments and a world seemingly unraveling- then winds backward through three interwoven acts that explore his adulthood, childhood, and the threads that connect them. Tom Hiddleston leads a powerhouse ensemble, including Mark Hamill as Chuck’s loving but complicated grandfather Albie, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Marty Anderson, a kind and reflective teacher, and Karen Gillan as a tirelessly busy nurse- perhaps the film’s quietest reflection of our current climate of collective burnout and emotional fatigue. Tom Hiddleston plays Chuck with a kind of weary grace- a quiet, inward ache. His post-Marvel trajectory has been refreshingly unpredictable,...

Mike Flanagan's New Stephen King Film Finally Hits Theaters, Debuting With Thrilling Audience Score
Image
Mike Flanagan made his impact on the horror genre with different projects, but he became popular after his partnership with Netflix for shows like The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher. However, the auteur is very well-versed in the adaptation of Stephen King's novels.

The horror mastermind is often critical of his adaptations, but his partnership with Flanagan has proven extremely prolific. After Flanagan focused exclusively on creating and directing TV shows, he also worked on several Stephen King projects. The latest one, The Life of Chuck, debuted last year to positive reviews and awards chatter at the Toronto International Film Festival, and, as it finally hit theaters, it features an equally thrilling score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following its release at TIFF, The Life of Chuck debuted with a score of 80% from the critics. Not much has changed since then, except...

The Breakout Star of ‘The Life of Chuck’ Didn’t Know He and Tom Hiddleston Were Playing the Same Role
Image
Some people might be surprised to hear this, but Tom Hiddleston is not the only star of Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck.” He’s not even the only Chuck! In Flanagan’s sweeping Stephen King adaptation, four different actors play everyman Chuck throughout various periods of his life. There’s Hiddleston, of course, as adult Chuck; Cody Flanagan (Mike and co-star Kate Siegel’s real-life child) as kid Chuck; Jacob Tremblay as teen Chuck; and first-time film actor Benjamin Pajak as tween Chuck.

It’s Pajak who will likely capture the most attention for his work here, even as he acts alongside legends like Mark Hamill and Mia Sara, thanks to his wonderfully open-hearted performance, plus plenty of dancing. While Pajak, just 12 years old at the time of filming, is no stranger to acting, the film is his very first film role. It’s an auspicious one at that,...

Mike Flanagan
Interview: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillian, Matthew Lillard, and Kate Siegel Talk The Life of Chuck
Mike Flanagan
Mike Flanagan first gained attention with films such as Oculus and Absentia. Yet, the acclaimed filmmaker has found a seemingly perfect place to bring Stephen King’s terror to life. His take on such stories as Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game has proven successful for many of his fans. The filmmaker even announced he is bringing Carrie to the small screen as a series. However, with The Life of Chuck, Flanagan offers a different kind of King-inspired fantasy.

The genre-bending feature stars Tom Hiddleston, Jacob Tremblay, and Benjamin Pajak, all of whom take on the role of Charles “Chuck” Krantz, the mysterious title figure. It’s an impressive cast that also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Mark Hamill, Kate Siegel, Matthew Lillard, David Dastmalchian, and a return to acting from Mia Sara.

Recently, I spoke with several members of the impressive cast. First up, I sat down with Matthew Lillard.

Why Life Of Chuck Plays More Like A Christopher Nolan Movie Than Stephen King
Image
This article contains spoilers for "The Life of Chuck."

In 1843, the Danish philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard wrote in his journal a passage which has echoed throughout time ever since, albeit one which is often shortened for easier consumption. The abridged and paraphrased quote is: "Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards." The full passage laments the paradox inherent within this axiom:

"It is really true what philosophy tells us, that life must be understood backwards. But with this one forgets the second proposition, that it must be lived forwards. A proposition which, the more it is subjected to careful thought, the more it ends up concluding precisely that life at any given moment cannot really ever be fully understood; exactly because there is no single moment where time stops completely in order for me to take position [to do this]: going backwards."

While it's obvious that...

TIFF People’s Choice Award Winner ‘The Life Of Chuck’ Latest Indie To Test Box Office Revival With Neon Gifting Campaign – Specialty Preview
Image
The box office has kicked into high great with a steady flow of films, studio and independent. It’s getting crowded and smaller distributors are hoping the rush will really and truly spill into indie and specialty fare. Signs are good with excellent numbers for Focus Features’ The Phoenician Scheme last weekend, for A24’s Friendship last month and Sony Pictures Classics Jane Austen Wrecked My Life.

All are solid counter-programming to big studio films. But screen-wise, “It’s always challenging when so much stuff is working,” said one distribution executive.

Now it is Neon’s turn to test the market. Fresh of its astonishing sixth consecutive Cannes Palme d’Or winner with Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just An Accident, it’s out this weekend with TIFF People’s Choice Award-winner The Life Of Chuck from Mike Flanagan opening in limited release with 16 runs in 8 markets.

‘The Life of Chuck’ cast reveal their favorite Stephen King works, including Mark Hamill’s love of the ‘terrifying’ ‘Pet Sematary’
Image
Filmmaker Mike Flanagan and all of the main cast members from The Life of Chuck spoke with Gold Derby about their movie adaptation of Stephen King's novella from his 2020 book If It Bleeds. The film won the 2024 People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was later acquired by Neon. It's due in theaters on Friday.

Tom Hiddleston, Jacob Tremblay, and Benjamin Pajak play the adult, teenage, and child versions of Charles "Chuck" Krantz, a modest accountant who grew up his dream to be a dancer. He's the central figure in the bittersweet story that's told in reverse over three acts. Flanagan wrote, directed, and produced the film that matches the tone of other non-horror adaptations from King, including Stand by Me (1986), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and The Green Mile (1999).

The stellar cast is rounded out by Chiwetel Ejiofor as Marty Anderson, Karen Gillan as Felicia Gordon, Mark Hamill as Albie Krantz,...

“The Premise Alone Is So Ghastly”: Mark Hamill Reveals Why Francis Lawrence’s Adaptation of ‘The Long Walk’ Called to Him [Exclusive]
Image
For cinema icon Mark Hamill, 2025 could easily be considered to be the year of Stephen King. This weekend, the Star Wars legend welcomes The Life of Chuck, his latest collaboration with filmmaker Mike Flanagan, based on King’s novella of the same name. Then, in September, Hamill will stay in pace with the theme, thanks to the theatrical arrival of Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of King’s 1979 novel, The Long Walk. In it, the actor who will go down as one of the greatest heroes of all time transforms himself into a bootlicking, depraved, absolute menace known only as the Major. Under his sadistic and tyrannical watch, a group of young men set forth in a contest to see who can walk the farthest. Should they stop or slow to less than three miles per hour, they’ll be executed on the spot.

Recently sitting down with Hamill to chat about The Life of Chuck,...

Mark Hamill and Tom Hiddleston on the Challenge of Adapting ‘The Life of Chuck’: ‘Even Stephen King’ Called It ‘Unfilmable’
Image
Though Mark Hamill and Tom Hiddleston play grandfather and grandson in “The Life of Chuck,” the two actors don’t share any scenes together. That’s because they appear in separate chapters of Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of the Stephen King novella, which chronicles the life of a seemingly ordinary man (Hiddleston). The co-stars didn’t meet until the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, where it went on to win the coveted Audience Award.

But the two share mutual admiration, along with similarities in their career paths. Both are best known for iconic franchise films but have balanced those blockbusters with complex character turns in smaller projects — which is where “The Life of Chuck” marks the perfect convergence.

Telling the story of Chuck’s life in reverse chronology, the film is a big, bold crowd-pleaser, complete with a showstopping dance number featuring Hiddleston and Annalise Basso.

What Could Possibly Get ‘Ferris Bueller’ Star Mia Sara Back to Acting After a Decade Off? Mike Flanagan Calling Her Bluff
Image
Nearly forty years since its initial release, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” still gets quite a bit of play. Turn your television on during most hours of the day, and the Matthew Broderick-starring comedy is likely to be on. So when the John Hughes classic popped up last week, just a few days before IndieWire’s scheduled interview with star Mia Sara, this writer took some time to catch up on an enduring favorite.

As Sloane Peterson, Sara — just 18 at the time of production, basically still a high schooler herself — is both an iconic cool girl and the rare teenager with a real regard for the weight of life itself. If Ferris is the Id of the story, Sloane is the Ego. She’s not just along for the ride, she’s also the one giving actual thought to the deeper stuff that’s unfolding around Ferris’ wacky high-jinks. The Life Of Chuck Review: Stephen King's Novella Becomes Mike Flanagan's Empathetic Opus
Image
There exists a pushback against a recent trend dubbed "hopecore," a cultural meme seen on social media platforms (mostly Tik Tok) which accentuates the positive. The reasons for this backlash are several, of course. Those who consider themselves realists believe that such rampant positivity can be toxic. It certainly doesn't help that so many popular sentiments regarding humanity's interconnectivity have been reduced to phrases printed on throw pillows and door mats that you can buy at Target. In an era where so many feel that to be positive is to be willfully ignorant, the notion that things can (or even might) work out alright feels like an empty platitude.

No single work of art can turn a pessimist into an optimist or vice versa, but the power of art can certainly address both the macro and the micro in an attempt to reconcile them. Movies, as Roger Ebert once said,...

‘One of the best ever’: Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill on why they fought to be in Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Life of Chuck’
Image
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after the screening of Mike Flanagan’s latest project The Life of Chuck, starring Tom Hiddleston as the adult version of the titular character.

Flanagan, who’s best known for his work in the horror genre and for Netflix hits like The Haunting of Hill House, steps away from jump scares (but not necessarily away from ghosts) in the moving three-act film, which won the Audience Award at last year's Toronto Film Festival. The original Stephen King story that provided the source material (from the 2020 collection If It Bleeds) brought the director some much-needed comfort during the pandemic.

“When I put the story down, it was April 2020, so a month into the lockdown,” Flanagan told Gold Derby on the red carpet at the premiere. “If I started reading this story, I felt like I might not finish it because it hit...

Ferris Bueller Star Opens Up About Landing New Role in Stephen King Film After 14-Year Hiatus
Image
Maria Sara returned to Hollywood for The Life of Chuck. The actor, who appeared in Ferris Bueller's Day Off as Sloane Peterson, last appeared on-screen in 2013.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Sara discussed her return to the silver screen, stating that "It feels a little daunting, but I'm very grateful. It's unexpected." Sara's upcoming role in The Life of Chuck marks her first time in a feature film since 2011's Dorothy and the Witches of Oz. In 2013, Sara announced her official hiatus from acting after appearing as Narciss in the short film Pretty Pretty.

Sara previously discussed her relationship with Flanagan and how the acclaimed filmmaker talked her into making her silver-screen comeback. Sara recalled Flanagan asking her about a potential return to film, which she was hesitant to consider. It wasn't until Flanagan specifically asked Sara about appearing in one of his projects that she began to come around to the idea.

‘The Life of Chuck’ Filmmaker Mike Flanagan on Life, Death, and the Very Special Person His New Stephen King Film Is Dedicated to
Image
If you’re a member of the film community at all, there’s already a lot of charged emotion surrounding Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck,” long before the heartbreaking, yet strangely joyous and often triumphant film even begins.

It’s not just that Flanagan and myself were speaking on the one-year anniversary of our mutual friend Scott Wampler’s death. It’s not just Flanagan’s film is dedicated to Wampler. It’s not just Flanagan’s film is about someone dying before his time. It’s also that Wampler is actually in this movie, in the background, smiling and full of life. I had no idea what my reaction would be to seeing Scott again, who I had not seen since we attended a Bruce Springsteen concert together (on a tour exploring the themes of loss). But, seated and waiting, I wasn’t sad anymore. Or, to...

‘The Life of Chuck’ Review: Mike Flanagan’s Teary-Eyed Tribute to Stephen King’s Humanism
Image
As horror has solidified itself as one of the last remaining bankable bastions of cinema, Stephen King’s vast trove of writing has become a juggernaut of intellectual property. The author is to the genre what Marvel is to action. And few filmmakers understand the literary giant’s enduring appeal better than Mike Flanagan, who previously brought King’s Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep to the screen. (He also has a Carrie series in the works.)

But with The Life of Chuck, based on King’s novella of the same name from the 2020 collection If It Bleeds, Flanagan has a more expansive aim. This isn’t an act of adaptation so much as a bow in adoration. His goal with this filmic translation is to tout King’s bona fides as the humanist behind Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile—that is, as more than...

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Hiddleston opened up about his time on the set of Mike Flanagan's upcoming time-bending film The Life of Chuck. "I burned holes in my shoes. I was dancing out on the asphalt in Alabama, and by the time we'd finished, you could see my socks through the soles," Hiddleston recalled. "It was really fun."

When asked for his initial reaction to the screenplay for The Life of Chuck, Hiddleston said, "I responded immediately to Mike Flanagan's screenplay, and then I obviously went back to the story in Stephen King's collection, If It Bleeds.I found it so ingenious, playing with time and playing with perspective." Tom Hiddleston Has a Moment With Annalise Basso in New ‘Life of Chuck’ Image
Image
Although her role as Janice Haliday in Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck will involve plenty of dancing, the latest still released of Annalise Basso looks more serious than carefree. In it, Basso’s Janice stands opposite Tom Hiddleston’s titular character, Chuck Krantz, and the pair appears to be embroiled in a serious conversation. Although we can’t tell what they’re chatting about, it looks like Janice’s words are leaving a lasting mark on Chuck and vice versa, with each character deeply connected and attentive to what the other is saying.

The Life of Chuck will see its filmmaker, Flanagan, move away from his typical vein of horror and step into something else — something more existential yet still topped with a twist of the supernatural. It’s also a change for author Stephen King, who wrote the short story on which Flanagan’s production is based.

The Life Of Chuck | Full trailer lands
Mike Flanagan
Mike Flanagan’s upcoming take on the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck has a new trailer – and an August UK release date.

Off the back of last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, there was a feeling that Mike Flanagan’s upcoming adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Life Of Chuck could be something really rather good. The film won TIFF’s coveted People’s Choice Award, leading to buzz that the film would go on to earn a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards, given that 12 of the last 14 winners have gone on to do so.

That ultimately wouldn’t happen because the film’s US distributor Neon – presumably busy running a campaign to get Sean Baker’s Anora a Best Picture Oscar – elected to give the film a May 2025 release slot. While that date doesn’t suggest that Neon thinks The Life Of Chuck...

The Life Of Chuck Trailer: Tom Hiddleston Dances Through Life In Mike Flanagan’s Heartfelt New Movie
Image
From the moment the first teaser for Mike Flanagan's latest Stephen King adaptation, The Life Of Chuck, dropped last month, we knew we were in trouble. A ticking clock motif, lush golden hour lighting, and a touch of delicate piano work were enough to assure us that we're getting Flanagan, Master of Feels, rather than Flanagan, Master of Horror, here. And now, with the release of the full trailer for the Doctor Sleep filmmaker's latest, a Tom Hiddleston starring adaptation of the second tale in King's If It Bleeds anthology, the floodgates are well and truly open. Just give it a watch and you'll see what we mean;

“When you look up at the night sky, it can tell you stuff about your future,” says Mark Hamill's Albie Krantz to grandson Chuck at the start of this new trailer over shots of the twinkling cosmos. “They won’t lie to you,...

Loki Star Tom Hiddleston Creates A Universe In Full Trailer For Mike Flanagan's The Life Of Chuck
Image
“Every year that you live, that world will get bigger and brighter. And more detailed, and complex. You fill the whole thing. It'll be a universe."

Following a brief teaser, a poster and some promo stills, Neon has finally given us a proper look at Mike Flanagan's latest Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, which stars Tom Hiddleston in the lead role.

Though King is (obviously) best-known for his work in the horror genre, he has penned some notable sci-fi, fantasy, and even straightforward drama stories. The Life of Chuck is based on the legendary author's 2020 novella, and while it does contain some sci-fi elements, it is most definitely not a horror tale.

The movie had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024, where it won the People's Choice Award. Positive reviews followed, and the film currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Life of Chuck has been described as,...

Neon shares emotional trailer for Mike Flanagan's emotional epic The Life of Chuck
Mike Flanagan
Well, Mike Flanagan has done it again. He's taken a Stephen King book and adapted it for the big screen, and the first trailer makes it look like The Life of Chuck is going to be a genuinely emotional epic.

In The Life of Chuck, Tom Hiddleston stars as Chuck Krantz, with the story told in reverse, sort of like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The saga begins with Chuck's death and goes back in time to his early childhood. Neon shared the official trailer, which is embedded above.

As you can see from some of the selected pull quotes featured in the trailer, critics are loving The Life of Chuck, with some even going so far as to call it the best King adaptation yet.

Hiddleston shares the role of Chuck with Jacob Tremblay, Cody Flanagan, and Benjamin Pajak. Mark Hamill and Mia Sara play Chuck's grandparents, and...

The Life Of Chuck Trailer Teases A Stephen King Movie That Really Wants To Make You Cry
Image
It's been a few decades since a Stephen King adaptation was designed with our tears in mind, but Mike Flanagan seems determined to break that streak with "The Life of Chuck." The new trailer for Flanagan's upcoming film just dropped from Neon, and while it doesn't reveal too much about the movie's plot, it does promise big emotions and a sweeping, lifetime-spanning story.

"The Life of Chuck" isn't autobiographical, but the sense one comes away with after watching the latest trailer is that it's King and Flanagan's answer to Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans." We see flashes of a life filled with sweet mother figures and grandpa-types; dancing in the street; colorful, starry nights; and general scenes of out-of-context wonder. There's also a sense of unspoken melancholy -- we get the feeling that whatever is being withheld from audiences, it involves a bittersweet experience involving the circle of life.

The trailer,...
