'Standing on the Shoulders of Kitties' Review | Bloated but Funny
Image
“Anybody that causes a prison riot singing about whores and cats, that’s my guy!” quips Billy Bob Thornton (Sling Blade), in Standing on the Shoulders of Kitties: The Bubbles and The Shitrockers Story, a film with one of the most bloated movie titles to arrive in recent memory. The plot of this quirky comedy may not be as consistently amusing, but there’s still spunk in this offbeat tale about a frenzied Canadian band that finds themselves opening for Thornton’s band during a European tour.

To be sure, this film may work best for diehard fans of the hit Canadian TV show, Trailer Park Boys, and/or the real-life band featured in it, Bubbles and The Shitrockers. Still, if you’re a Borat fan and a lover of silly comedies or films about beleaguered bands, this film is for you. For others, it’s amusing enough and a...

Specialty Box Office Preview: James Gandolfini’s ‘The Drop’, ‘The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby: Them’, More
James Gandolfini and Tom Hardy in La entrega (2014)
The upcoming weekend boasts an onslaught of new Specialty titles vying for audiences. In all likelihood, however, many will have a short big screen life as the fall’s awards contenders ramp up and crowd others out. Five of this week’s dozen-plus newcomers are spotlighted here with Fox Searchlight’s The Drop edging on a wide release. The feature starring Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace and James Gandolfini will bow in over 800 theaters. TWC’s The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby also joins the fray with a platform release. The film also has two accompanying titles told from the perspective of its two main characters, which will be released in more limited runs in October. Magnolia will open its thriller Honeymoon in a day and date release while Dada Films’ Swearnet: The Movie breaks a movie record with the most F-bombs ever. And Cohen Media Group’s My Old Lady bowed Wednesday in limited release.

Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It Red Band Trailer
John Paul Tremblay, Mike Smith, and Robb Wells in Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It (2014)
While a teaser for Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalize It dropped back in December, it didn't show us too much from the further adventures of Ricky, Julian and Bubbles (Robb Wells, John Paul Tremblay and Mike Smith) as they join together on a mission to keep weed from being legalized in Canada. Today, we get the raunchy Red Band trailer, which shows off more of their exploits while saving the best stuff for cinema screens. After Trailer Park Boys: The Movie and Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day, they promised they'd never make another movie. They lied. In (Canadian) theaters April 18.

The Canadian TV series Trailer Park Boys and its two feature films only continue to grow in popularity, having reached cult status here in the states on Netflix, where all of their past adventures (save for the special that bridges Season 7 and Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day...

[DVD Review] Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day
Honesty is a quality all too undervalued in critics (it usually takes a back seat to the ability to create short, penetrating little missiles of inanity that can be featured on a film’s poster come awards season), so I’ll come clean with you right now: I walked into Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day fully expecting to hate it, and already crafting impossibly clever sentiments designed to let everyone know just how awful it was. But I didn’t hate it. I certainly didn’t like it, and I didn’t laugh once, but it defied my expectations as to what I was about to see in ways that weren’t really pleasing, though I’m still a little befuddled by.

Ricky (Robb Wells, the obnoxious one), Julian (John Paul Tremblay, the leader) and Bubbles (Mike Smith, the one who seems to deliberately evoke Milton from Office Space...
