The network has ruled that The Hunting Party, which is streaming on Peacock, has been renewed and will receive a second season. ‘The Hunting Party’ & ‘Brilliant Minds’ Renewed For Season 2; NBC Plans To “Lean Into” Them In 2025-26
Image
NBC has picked up freshman drama series The Hunting Party, starring Melissa Roxburgh, and Brilliant Minds, headlined by Zachary Quinto, for a second season. Both are part of the network’s September-October fall schedule unveiled today. Brilliant Minds, from Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Prods, is staying in the post-The Voice Monday 10 Pm slot while The Hunting Party, from Universal Television, is moving to Thursdays 10 Pm.

Besides the five Dick Wolf series, The Hunting Party and Brilliant Minds are the only other current NBC series to make it to next season amid a bloodbath at the broadcast network which canceled a slew of scripted series in anticipation of NBA’s arrival on the schedule next fall.

This is a changing of the guard in NBC’s scripted lineup as all four non-Wolf returning scripted series are from this season’s freshman class, The Hunting Party, Brilliant Minds and comedies St.

“The Lines Got a Little Blurred”: ‘The Hunting Party’ Co-Showrunners Break Down Bex and Oliver’s Relationship
Image
Bex (Melissa Roxburgh) and Oliver (Nick Wechsler) have a history in The Hunting Party, not just as work partners but also as lovers. Even so, viewers shouldn’t expect romance or rekindled affection between the two, who will supposedly remain professional. Still, considering their history, showrunners JJ Bailey and Jake Coburn shed more light on the dynamic of their relationship; maintaining romance is not essential given the show's setup. During a set visit at which Collider's Samantha Coley was in attendance, Bailey said:

“There's a little more of like a mentor-mentee relationship from the past that we explore sort of crossed some lines that maybe got uncomfortable just before sort of their big blow up, but we sort of found that you know it wasn't a needed romantic relationship where we landed with that."

Before Bex split with the FBI, she worked on a case with Oliver, who, as...

How ‘The Hunting Party’ Even Spooked Its Own Star
Image
NBC’s new series The Hunting Party melds a lot of TV genres into one high-concept hour. A drama about intelligence officers tracking down serial killers who’ve escaped from a secret government prison, it straddles the line between procedural and serialized mystery over the course its 10-episode first season.

“We really connected when we first met over wanting to do a procedural that felt a bit different,” says creator and co-showrunner JJ Bailey, who met fellow showrunner Jake Coburn on a “creative blind date” set up by Universal Television. “We love big serialized mysteries, but we also wanted to do a big week-to-week cases.”

Starring Melissa Roxburgh as an FBI special agent who shares a personal history with many of these criminals, each episode of the first season finds her character track down a different killer — sometimes creeping out the actress in the process. And while the writers have...

NBC's New Crime Drama Gets Obliterated by Critics — But Audiences Don't Agree
Image
NBC's new crime drama series, The Hunting Party, did not have a strong debut with critics. However, after getting lambasted in most reviews, the series drew some praise from audiences.

On Rotten Tomatoes, The Hunting Party initially debuted with a harsh, rare score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. That number has since risen to 11%, getting minimal praise from critics as nearly every review is negative. The bright side is that the audience score is vastly different, ranking much higher at 70%. While critics are slamming the show for its "predictability" and "generic action" sequences, many viewers are comparing the show to Criminal Minds, seeing great potential in the series' future.

‘The Hunting Party’ Review: NBC’s Serial Killer Procedural Is a Deadly Bore
Image
All things being equal, you’d never want to live anywhere near a supermax prison, but there are few patches of narrative real estate more beloved by broadcast television.

It’s easy to understand why. Your typical supermax prison — or any prison or facility that creators can claim is packed with the worst and most notorious of criminals — is like a concrete-encased cornucopia of procedural plotlines just waiting to break out.

It’s the fodder for much of Prison Break, as well as the third season of Heroes, the brief run of Alcatraz and just about any Batman story connected to Arkham Asylum. With some twists and variations, it’s the seed that germinated in several of NBC’s most successful shows of the ’10s, including The Blacklist and Blindspot — shows that made promises in their pilots that a weekly string of the worst villains imaginable were connected through a...

Midseason always brings some big new shows with NBC often giving us some crime thrillers. That includes The Hunting Party, which is slipping into a new timeslot on Mondays in February with The Voice as a lead-in. It looks to be a spin on the classic setup of a group of law enforcement agents hunting criminals.

The trailer sets up the premise of “The Pit,” a top-secret underground prison home to the worst criminals and killers on Earth. A massive explosion rips through the facility, allowing scores of the inmates to break free. Former government operative Rebecca “Bex” Henderson is recruited to lead a team to track the fugitives down. The reason she’s called on is because the prison is so secret that the government can’t even acknowledge there...

The Hunting Party gets an early February premiere date (Is it a good timeslot?)
Image
NBC has announced when The Hunting Party will be on TV, but is it a bad time slot for the new crime drama?

NBC has just announced its winter/spring 2025 schedule, with a mix of new and returning shows. Among them is the new crime thriller The Hunting Party. Created by JJ Bailey, the series focuses on a pack of cops, federal agents, and investigators brought in when a jailbreak occurs at a high-security prison. The catch? The prison is so ultra top-secret that the government doesn’t even acknowledge it exists or who was held there. That means the team can’t rely on help from other agencies while also wondering who they’re really working for.

The show is set to debut Monday, Feb. 3 at 10/9c. That seems like a good entry for the new thriller, yet the question is whether this is a good place for this drama or not.

Crime Procedural ‘The Hunting Party’ Given Series Order at NBC
Image
NBC has given a series order to “The Hunting Party,” a high-concept crime procedural from JJ Bailey and Jake Coburn, with both serving as executive producers, writers and co-showrunners.

Created by Bailey, who also wrote the pilot script, “The Hunting Party” follows a small team of investigators who work together to track down and capture the most dangerous killers the country has ever seen, all of whom have just escaped from a top-secret prison that’s not supposed to exist.

Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio behind the series, which isn’t surprising as Bailey has an overall deal there while Coburn has a first-look deal.

The order for “The Hunting Party” comes as NBC has already ordered three other pilots for next season, including “Suits: LA,” an untitled Reba McEntire-led comedy and more recently, a pilot for “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” from Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs.

NBC has given a pilot order to Grosse Pointe Garden Society, a long-in-the-works drama from Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs.

Universal Television, where Bans, Krebs and Bailey are under overall deals and Coburn has a first-look deal, is the studio on both.

Grosse Pointe Garden Society, which had a put pilot commitment, was one of two sales at NBC this development season for Bans and Krebs through Universal TV. Their other script, Murder By the Book, with Good Girls‘ Retta attached to star, was picked up to pilot. It also originally had a put pilot commitment.

NBC has split its drama slate between the two models, with two pilots, Murder By the Book and Wolf, and two writers rooms for a straight-to-series consideration.

‘Getaway’ Drama Pilot Not Going Forward At NBC, Freeing Up ‘Manifest’s Matt Long & ‘All Rise’s Marg Helgenberger
Image
Exclusive: NBC has opted not to proceed with its drama pilot Getaway. Headlined by Annie Ilonzeh, it starred two leads of recently canceled broadcast series that have since been resurrected, Manifest’s Matt Long and All Rise‘s Marg Helgenberger. Both actors are now available to do other shows, including their old ones, which both have been picked up for 20 episodes. Meanwhile, NBC’s other drama pilot, Dangerous Moms, remains in contention.

I hear Long is in talks about rejoining Manifest as a series regular though it is unclear if a deal will be reached. The missing plane drama was picked up for a fourth season by Netflix in August following its cancellation by NBC.

“I will be back for some of it, we’re just trying to find out the maximum I can do,” Long said backstage at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards last month when he was still attached to Getaway.

Hailing from The Blacklist EPs John Davis and John Fox and writers JJ Bailey and Moira Kirland, Getaway follows a destination wedding at an isolated luxury resort that quickly spirals into chaos when a group of dangerous criminals takes the island hostage. The small RSVP list of guests, led by a fearless female Army vet (Chicago Fire‘s Annie Ilonzeh), in turn do everything they can to stay alive.

‘Manifest’s Matt Long, Marg Helgenberger, Jasmine Mathews & E.J. Bonilla Cast In ‘Getaway’ NBC Pilot
Image
Amid talks about a new season of Manifest, one of the canceled NBC series’ core cast members, Matt Long, has booked a new pilot at the network but fans of the missing plane drama should not be too worried about it. Long, CSI alumna Marg Helgenberger, Jasmine Mathews (The Rookie) and E.J. Bonilla (The Old Man) are set as series regulars opposite Annie Ilonzeh in NBC drama pilot Getaway, from The Blacklist duo John Davis and John Fox and Universal TV, a division of Universal Studios Group.

I hear Long was approached about Getaway after the options on the Manifest cast expired last month and studio Warner Bros. Television ended its efforts to find a new home for the show after conversations with Netflix did not yield an agreement. The series regulars on Manifest are free to take new jobs while talks about a Season 4 of Manifest recently resumed, with...
