Eddie Irvine made his Formula One debut in the penultimate race of the season, the 1993 Japanese Grand Prix and he finished 6th place and secured 1 point on his debut. This race was the scene of Eddie's first controversial action. Seeing
Ayrton Senna coming up to lap him, Irvine moved over. Then, when Senna didn't bother to lap
Damon Hill, he amazingly put a pass on Senna to unlap himself. He also then overtook Hill. After the race, Senna went to the Jordan motorhome and punched Irvine.
At the opening round in 1994 Brazilian Grand Prix, Irvine was involved in a four cars crash. He was given a one-race ban and a $10,000 fine which was increased to three races for merely daring to appeal against the decision.
