Exclusive: Taiwan’s D-Day Pictures and Singapore’s Mokster Films have pre-sold theatrical rights for horror film Phantom to seven Southeast Asian markets via Abnormal Studios, at the Cannes market.

These countries include Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia.

Set for theatrical release in 2026, Phantom is directed by D-Day founder Lester Hsi.

The film will be produced by Fiona Hu (Black & White: The Dawn Of Justice) and Mokster Films’ Nelson Mok (Red Thread).

Phantom follows a social worker Youmo, who is reassigned to the trauma unit. She soon stumbles upon a disturbing case involving a series of mysterious deaths. Taiwan-based production banner D-Day Pictures and Singapore’s Mokster Films have teamed on “Phantom,” an Eastern Taoist-infused take on the “Invisible Man” concept, unveiled at this year’s Cannes Film Market.

Helmed by D-Day founder Lester Hsi, who previously scored box office success with “The Bridge Curse” and its sequel “The Bridge Curse: Ritual,” the horror film will be produced by Fiona Hu (“Black & White: The Dawn Of Justice”) with Mokster Films’ Nelson Mok (“Red Thread”) also on board. The project marks Mokster’s debut as a producer while the company will also handle international sales duties.

Singapore sales agent Mokster Films is expanding into production, making its first feature film Phantom with Taiwanese director Lester Hsi.

The horror film follows a social worker who encounters a series of mysterious deaths, which leads her to buried wartime secrets connected to a sealed cave. The story is a new take on the Invisible Man mythos but infused with Taoist mysticism.

“This film is about the fear that lingers in silence, in forgotten places, and in systems we take for granted,” says Mokster Films’ Nelson Mok, who is taking on the new role of producer for the first time.

2024 Tccf Concludes Successfully!

The 2024 Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf), held its closing and awards ceremony for the Pitching section today (8th). This year’s grand prize, the Taicca X Cnc Award, was awarded to Clouded Leopard by Mangowork Studio Co., Ltd., while the Taicca Award: Best Story went to Rest in Pieces by Balena Islet Publishing Inc. Each winner took home $30,000 Usd and $10,000 Usd, respectively. Additionally, following the jury’s recommendation, a Special Jury Award was introduced due to the exceptional diversity and quality of proposals. This award was presented to the tri-country co-production The Alleyway which received $10,000 Usd in prize money as encouragement to inspire more market-potential projects in the future.

Taicca Chairperson Homme Tsai expressed that the four-day Tccf event received high praise for its international participation and professional quality, with over 10,000 visitors attending. ‘Clouded Leopard’, ‘Rest In Pieces’, ‘Call Of Lobster’ among winners at Taiwan Creative Content Fest

Taiwanese animated feature Clouded Leopard and Taiwanese manga Rest In Pieces were among the grand prize winners presented by at the pitching session of this year’s Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf) which wrapped on November 8.

Clouded Leopard, produced by Mangowork Studio, took the Taicca X Cnc award with a cash prize of $30,000, while Rest In Pieces, published by Balaena Island Publishing, received the Taicca award: best story.

A further special jury award was added for The Alleyway, a documentary project co-produced by Korea, Qatar, and Denmark.

Taiwan-Korea comedy drama feature Call Of Lobster by Calendar Studios won the Chunghwa Telecom award.

In case you were wondering about the console release of Softstar Entertainment’s The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation (particularly after the release of the trailer for the sequel last week), Eastasiasoft Limited has announced pre-orders for a limited physical release of Road to Salvation for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders will open on Thursday, July 13th at 11:00am Et/8:00am Pt, courtesy of Playasia.

The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation will still be getting a digital release on the Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. However, those who spring for the physical release will get some additional goodies alongside the game. Those goodies include the game’s printed manual, soundtrack CD, art book and a numbered certificate in a collector’s box. If you’re not keen on having the extra stuff, you can also just order a standard physical copy of Road to Salvation.

WME Independent summons sales of ‘The Bridge Curse: Ritual’ (exclusive)

The horror sequel has been picked up by buyers across Asia.

US sales outfit WME Independent has sold theatrical rights to Taiwanese horror The Bridge Curse: Ritual to a raft of Asian territories.

Directed by Lester Hsi, the film has sold to Hong Kong (Edko Films), Singapore and Malaysia (Clover Films), Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia and Nepal (Westec Media), the Philippines (Pioneer Films) and Vietnam (Mockingbird Pictures).

It marks the sequel to Hsi’s feature debut The Bridge Curse, which proved a hit at the Taiwanese box office in 2020, and was the most-watched Taiwanese film on Netflix that year, according to the streamer.

Way back in January, we told you about Softstar Entertainment’s The Bridge Curse: Road to Salvation. The game hit Steam back in August, and now thanks to publisher eastasiasoft, the first-person adventure horror game will be headed to the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch in the first half of 2023.

In addition, the game will now have an English voice acting option to complement the original Chinese voice acting track. There’s no word on if the English voice acting option will be making its way to the Steam version, however.

WME Independent ramps up Asian genre slate (exclusive)

Horror and action titles include ’The Cursed Land’ and a sequel to ‘The Bridge Curse’.

Nascent US sales outfit WME Independent has swooped on five genre features from Southeast Asia and Taiwan, and is launching pre-sales at the Marché.

The deals were brokered by Singapore-based Nelson Mok, WME’s director, advisory, film group, who is in talks with international buyers in Cannes.

The titles include Thai horror The Cursed Land, co-directed by Panu Aree and Kong Rithdee, which follows a widower who travels to Thailand’s deep south to seek help from a witch doctor. Producer is Nonzee Nimibutr, whose credits include Nang Nak.

YA Book ‘A Banquet For Hungry Ghosts’ Optioned For Anthology Horror Series By 108 Media

Exclusive: 108 Media has picked up rights to Ying Chang Compestine’s YA book A Banquet for Hungry Ghosts and is planning an animated anthology horror series adaptation.

Los Angeles-based showrunner Tricia Lee will write all eight 30-minute episodes of the show, she previously directed features that sold to Hulu and NBC Universal’s Chiller Network and was named on the 2020 Black List. Taiwanese filmmaker Lester Hsi will helm the project, his credits include local box office hit The Bridge Curse, which was also picked up by Netflix.

Set across different epochs surrounding Chinese culture across the world, the series is made up of eight self-contained hungry ghost stories, laid out as eight courses of a banquet in a live-action appetizer/dessert bookends (filmed unique to each language and market) wrapped around its animated main course.
