How ‘Islands’ Producer Augenschein Segued From Foreign-Language Arthouse Fare to English-Language Elevated Genre Movies
Image
German production company Augenschein has just added “The Weight,” starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, to its slate. Company founders Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo talk to Variety about how they made the shift from foreign-language arthouse fare to English-language elevated genre movies, with stars attached.

Despite its very German-sounding name — which roughly translates as the “shine of the eye” — Augenschein has the global market firmly in its sights. As for the films, they are defined by their “signature-style directing,” Leo says.

Its Berlin lineup is led by Jan-Ole Gerster’s thriller “Islands,” starring Sam Riley, Stacy Martin and Jack Farthing, which world-premieres Sunday in the Berlinale Special Gala section, with Protagonist handling world sales.

“Mother Mary”

Other films on its slate include David Lowery’s pop melodrama “Mother Mary,” starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Cole, with A24 handling worldwide distribution; and Brian Kirk’s action thriller “The Death of Winter,...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit the interwebs. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Arabian Nights (Miguel Gomes)

In lauding Miguel Gomes‘ three-part, six-and-a-half hour behemoth, it’s perhaps important to consider his background as a critic. Not just in terms of the trilogy’s cinephilic engagement with Rossellini, Alonso, Oliveira, etc.; also in its defiant nature. While it’s easy to assign the trilogy certain humanist and satirical labels from the get-go and just praise these films for following through on them,...

Interview: Bryan Greenberg Talks A Short History of Decay
There are times people will undoubtingly question where their personal and personal lives are headed, and if they’ve made the right decisions in what they want to do with the rest of their lives. Not only has that uncertainly crept into the mind of the main character, Nathan, of the new independent comedy, ‘A Short History of Decay,’ but also the actor who played him, Bryan Greenberg. Greenberg relatably and genuinely drew on his own [ Read More ]

Taylor Lautner Shows off Abduction Footage on Jimmy Kimmel
Taylor Lautner of “Twilight” fame was on Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show last night and brought along a minute-long action clip from his new movie, “Abduction” that showed the young tyke battling it out with a thug on a train. For some reason he keeps his shirt on, though, which will probably confuse some of the girls out there. Feel free to skip the rest of the interview, as listening to Kimmel interview people is like stabbing yourself in the ears with a screwdriver. For as long as he can remember, Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) has had the uneasy feeling that he’s living someone else’s life. When he stumbles upon an image of himself as a little boy on a missing persons website, all of Nathan’s darkest fears come true: he realizes his parents are not his own and his life is a lie, carefully fabricated to...

Exclusive Q&A: A 'Peep' Into Sarah Silverman's 'World'
She's written and performed on "Saturday Night Live," had a self-titled program on Comedy Central and f**ed Matt Damon (in song, we mean, on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"), so it's about time Sarah Silverman gets "serious" about a movie career.

Silverman follows up sporadic screen roles in "School of Rock," "Rent" and "School for Scoundrels" with "Peep World," a new dysfunctional family comedy co-starring Michael C. Hall, Rainn Wilson and Ben Schwartz. She plays one of the three siblings devastated by their younger brother's tell-all novel, which exposes many intimate family secrets, as the family gathers for their father's 70th birthday.

The comedian/actress/writer/singer/musician was sleep-deprived and frantically rushing to pack for a trip when we got her on the horn — but her sometimes stream-of-consciousness answers kept us laughing regardless.

Your character in "Peep World," Cheri, is suing her brother Nathan for libel. In real life, how litigious are you?...
