Mickey Reece has carved a niche for himself in indie cinema, exploring different genres with his distinctive and idiosyncratic lens. His latest, Every Heavy Thing, sees him tackle yet another genre, crafting an impressively immersive thriller that captures the essence of the genre in a way that few other filmmakers have been able to achieve.
Every Heavy Thing Review
Every Heavy Thing follows an office worker for a small-town alt-weekly as he gets caught up in a conspiracy involving disappearing women when he accidentally witnesses a murder. The film feels fresh and unique because of how frequently it subverts expectations, from revealing what seems like it would have been its big reveal in the first act to its unique aesthetic and style that blends genres and references.
Reece’s film is a true oddity — a movie that both feels like a relic of the past and strangely zeitgeisty. It’s...

Two days after ”Everything Everywhere All at Once“ won seven Oscars, including best picture, the SXSW Film Festival, where Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s movie launched last year, has announced its own awards. To be clear, “Eeaao” was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (“My Machines”) in 2012.

Criminal Minds: Evolution showrunner Erica Messer explains why it's harder for characters like Reid to return in the Paramount+ reboot. Taking a serialized approach to its storytelling, Criminal Minds: Evolution season 1 recently concluded its run. The revived version of the long-running drama series focused on the attempt to capture Voit (Zach Gilford), but it also featured a bit of romance, more humor, and a closer look at the lives of the Bau agents. It's a shift facilitated by the show's move to streaming, which has allowed for more narrative risks.
But, for all the benefits of streaming, it has meant a shorter episode count. While a typical season of the original Criminal Minds on CBS ran as high as 26 episodes, only dipping lower towards the end, Criminal Minds: Evolution consists of just ten. Messer explained to TVLine that the smaller number of episodes made it more difficult to bring back...

Richard Bates Jr.’s King Knight has an approximation of many things: humor, story, idiosyncrasy, character depth and likeability, production design, dialogue, cinematography, the concepts of witchcraft and self-actualization, and a basic sense of stakes or danger. Its half-formed regard for narrative and form are the haphazard basis of the director’s fifth feature, a superficial take on a hero’s journey that comes off like an unfinished script—an almost-film.
In King Knight, Matthew Gray Gubler (whose visage fits naturally into that of a cult leader) stars as Thorn––the quirky, not-evil, bird bath-selling high priest of a modern-day witches’ coven made up in its entirety of characters played by comedy actors Andy Milonakis, Kate Comer, Nelson Franklin, Johnny Pemberton, and Josh Fadem. Thorn wants to start a family with his life partner Willow (Angela Sarafyan), who’s reluctant to cow to his whims. As their Pagan fertility ritual of Beltane commences,...

We’re all good people, but we’re full of shit. Or, as the characters in King Knight say, we all have “poo in our butts”. We’re all imperfect human beings, some more malicious than others, and it’s the outsider who receives the brunt of that malice. Writer-director Richard Bates Jr. looks at the outsider with a dark sense of humor and with a farcical approach, creating one of the best comedies of the year. While looking at religion, conservatives, and society in general, King Knight aims to present Wicca in a positive light. It succeeds, leading to a journey of acceptance and rebirth.

In a lively chat on “Variety After-Show” on Instagram — where Odenkirk answered questions from fans — following the episode’s airing, he also revealed that one of the season’s last two remaining episodes was particularly taxing.
“I almost got killed doing one of these episodes. Just shooting the entire thing almost killed me,” he said.
Here are the top five revelations from Variety’s interview with Odenkirk. Watch the interview in the video above.

In the Season 3 finale of “Room 104,” the motel room that has housed three dozen different self-contained stories does something it certainly hasn’t done before: It sprouts into a rainforest.
Even if you haven’t seen the episode yet, “Room 104” executive producer Sydney Fleischmann is Ok with you still knowing about it.
“Our initial reaction with a lot of things is, ‘Oh my God, that’s a spoiler! That’s gonna give away everything!’ And then we sort of talk ourselves down and remember no one has any sense of anything that happens in the room. It’s all going to be fresh and weird and new,” Fleischmann told IndieWire. “And so showing the room as a jungle is not, it’s not a spoiler, it’s really alluring and it’s weird. I think the fun part is that it’s much more than ‘the room is filled with green.

The cast and creative team behind the Showtime series “On Becoming a God in Central Florida” discussed the impact that multi-level marketing schemes during a panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Friday.
Set in a small Orlando-adjacent town in 1992, the series follows Krystal Stubbs (Dunst), a minimum-wage water park employee who lies, schemes and cons her way up the ranks of Founders American Merchandise (Fam) — the cultish, flag-waving, multibillion-dollar pyramid scheme that drove her to ruin in the first place, run by the powerful Obie Garbeau II (Ted Levine).
“These kinds of schemes are all about people being asked to monetize their relationships,” showrunner Esta Spalding said. “What’s heartbreaking is not only the debt and the loss…The losses become familial as well.”
“Everyone on this show wants something more in their life but there is no way they could do that making minimum wage in 1992,” she continued.

Kirsten Dunst blinds an all-seeing pyramid in a new trailer for On Becoming a God in Central Florida.
Pyramid schemes didn't start with the Illuminati and didn't end with Amway. Showtime's new series, On Becoming A God in Central Florida, shows the cult of free enterprise is alive and thriving in the southeast land of the mouse. Kirsten Dunst stars as a water park worker who floats to the top in the 10-episode comedy.
Set in 1992, Dunst's character, Krystal Stubbs, lives in the Orlando area. Struggling to make ends meet as a minimum wage worker at a rundown water park, she drinks the kool-aid of multilevel marketing scams. She gets duped by Founders American Enterprise (Fam), a cult-like company which has already brainwashed most of her community with their promises of an “A-list, six-star, jet-set lifestyle," and decides to beat them at their own game.
The pilot was directed by Charlie McDowell.

Superhero movies/TV shows always focus on the ones with the powers, but what about those other, lowly people? The ones trying to get through their nine-to-five shift without their building collapsing onto them? That’s the basis, in part, for NBC’s DC Comics comedy Powerless, a workplace sitcom with an added superpowered twist, which is set to premiere early next month. The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.
The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.
in the meantime in more official news, Showtime, Lynch and Mark Frost has released the official cast list for the new series with a whopping 217 names across the various episodes - a list that includes some real surprise big name inclusions such as Monica Bellucci, Michael Cera, Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Vedder, Ashley Judd, Ernie Hudson, Jim Belushi, Richard Chamberlain, Laura Dern,...

A friend of mine and I were deciding what we wanted to do Halloween night and came to the conclusion we wanted to see a movie. I checked times on the local theater’s website and noticed a movie called “Freaks of Nature.”
The blurb describing the movie said it involved zombies, vampires, and humans co-existing in the town of Dillford, until aliens show up and, essentially, wreck everything. As soon as I read this blurb out loud, my friend’s face lit up, he grinned, and said “We have to go to that one.”
So, we did. We had no expectations. The only name we recognized in the miniscule summary was Joan Cusack, and they didn’t even bother to mention what her role would be. The poster looks like it could have come from any teen-centric horror movie from the very late seventies to the mid-eighties, easily. It...
