A Game Of Thrones Star Thought The Original Pilot Was A Disaster
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

We've all heard tales, throughout the years, of the original "Game of Thrones" pilot and how much it absolutely stunk ... and apparently, Kit Harington, who played assumed Stark bastard Jon Snow in both the botched pilot and the entire series, had a bad feeling about it pretty early on.

In an Esquire profile in the April 2019 issue of GQ (about a month before "Game of Thrones" concluded with its eighth and final season), Harington revealed photos of his time on the "Game of Thrones" set to interviewer Bruce Handy, which apparently included a shot of the original table read for that awful pilot. As Harington showed off a picture of himself and his co-stars Richard Madden and Alfie Allen, who went on to play Robb Stark and Theon Greyjoy, he mused about the pilot that, thankfully, never saw the light of day.

15 Actors Who Almost Starred In Game Of Thrones
Image
If you were a struggling actor in the U.K. in the early 2010s, odds are you probably auditioned for "Game of Thrones." Set in the epic world created by George R.R. Martin and considered one of the best fantasy shows of all time, the series showcased an expansive roster of widely beloved (and horribly loathsome) characters. That cast included all-time greats of British film and theater, like Sean Bean and Charles Dance, as well as future stars like Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington.

However, as with any popular show, many actors auditioned or were offered parts that never materialized, or perhaps not in the way they had anticipated. From future A-listers who HBO unbelievably rejected to big names the show wasn't able to convince to be a part of the pop culture phenomenon, these are 15 actors who were almost cast on "Game of Thrones," but thankfully, for the actors...

Game Of Thrones: 10 Actors Who Were Almost Cast In The Acclaimed HBO Series
Image
Stars Who Almost Made It To Game Of Thrones ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Game of Thrones has become so iconic that it’s nearly impossible to picture it with any other actors than the ones we know and love. Emilia Clarke’s fiery Daenerys and Lena Headey’s cold-as-ice Cersei are ingrained in our minds, but the casting process was far from straightforward. Before the show became the global sensation we know, several Hollywood A-listers nearly joined the cast, some even auditioning for key roles that would eventually make history.

Imagine a world where Mahershala Ali almost played a Qarthian merchant or Sam Heughan wasn’t swinging a sword in Outlander but instead vying for a role in Westeros! While many could have fit in seamlessly, others missed their shot, leaving us to wonder, what could have been? Let’s look at these 10 actors who almost made it into the world of Game of Thrones.

12 Biggest Differences Between HBO's Game Of Thrones And George R. R. Martin's Books
Image
It's been years since "Game of Thrones" ended, bringing the HBO series' tight grip on pop culture to a close (if only temporarily). The show took TV by storm in the 2010s, with characters like Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, and Tyrion Lannister becoming household names. However, it owed a lot to the books it was based on, "A Song of Ice & Fire" by George R. R. Martin.

Although the television series was predated by five books, the show quickly moved past where they left off, resulting in a second half of the series that is divisive amongst fans. Some speculate that every main character's ending in "Game of Thrones" is reminiscent of how they'll end up on the page, but the show still took drastic creative liberties along the way, from cutting integral characters to simplifying Martin's overcomplicated plots.

We're now 14 years out from the most recent book's release,...

It’s a Miracle Tamzin Merchant Didn’t Leave Acting After ‘Game of Thrones’ but It’s Not Close to How Marvel Treated Chris Pratt
Image
Fans of Game of Thrones certainly know the legendary story of the unaired pilot episode that featured a different Daenerys Targaryen. Tamzin Merchant portrayed the Mother of Dragons, but during the grueling production of the failed first episode, HBO realized she wasn’t the best choice for the role.

Emilia Clarke replaced the actress, and from here, the filming went smooth sailing. The show finally picked up momentum, and after its first season run, it became a cultural phenomenon and a staple watch for every household.

Tamzin Merchant’s journey in Game of Thrones wasn’t as bad as Chris Pratt’s first audition for Marvel

There were a lot of variations as to what truly happened behind the scenes with Tamzin Merchant and her short-lived role in Game of Thrones. Some say she left the project, while others claim she was fired by HBO.

In an interview with James Hibberd for Entertainment Weekly,...

Inspired by True Story Witchcraft Horror ‘The Caged’ Finds Its Cast
Tamzin Merchant
Tamzin Merchant (Carnival Row), Edmund Kingsley (T.I.M.), and Raffiella Chapman (Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) have joined the inspired-by-true-events horror The Caged, Deadline reports today.

The Caged begins principal photography next month in the UK.

The film draws from history and follows “a family that is terrorized by a dark presence after they move into a quaint cottage. Uncovering its history, they discover their once dream home lies on the site of a medieval prison set aside for those accused of witchcraft, including England’s most notorious witch, hanged in 1582.”

While that logline doesn’t which witch may have inspired The Caged, the 1582 clue suggests it could, perhaps, draw from Ursula Kemp, a woman who confessed to witchcraft and murder before being hanged. Then again, Essex, England alone is notorious for the daunting volume of witchcraft trials over the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. There’s no...

“It was unbelievably bad”: Jaime Lannister Actor on Why Game of Thrones Wouldn’t Have Existed if HBO CEO Didn’t Take a Leap of Faith
Image
Avid fans of Game of Thrones certainly know the infamous story of the unaired pilot episode where everything went wrong. The narrative, as well as some of its cast members, did not work for the project in the way showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss hoped, so the next wisest thing to do was to scrap the episode.

HBO Had a More Lore Accurate Daenerys Targaryen Episode Even Before Emilia Clarke Joined the Show
Image
When an adaptation is being made, many creative liberties are taken to make a better-translated story from one medium to another. Emilia Clarke’s Game of Thrones was no different in this, going from page to screen with a story that rivals the imagination of its creator. With nothing like it having come out before, there were a lot of liberties taken with it when it comes to certain elements of its plot.

However, as the books have been just as successful as the series, a sort of debate has begun among fans about which version of the story is better. There is no better example of this than Daenerys Targaryen. Her character has changed quite a lot through the years. However, this can all be traced down to one change that was made in the very first episode of the series.

One Game Of Thrones Actor Was Recast And Fans Totally Missed It
Image
"Game of Thrones" had its share of recastings -- they were inevitable with a production and an ensemble as sprawling as the show had. The series had two Daario Naharises (Ed Skrein and then Michiel Huisman) and three Gregor Cleganes. After season 2, "Game of Thrones" also recast both of the younger Lannister-Baratheon siblings, Myrcella (Aimée Richardson and then future "First Omen" star Nell Tiger Free) and King Tommen (Callum Wharry and Dean Charles Chapman). Even Daenerys Targaryen was played by Tamzin Merchant, not Emilia Clarke, in the unaired (and then remade) "Game of Thrones" pilot.

One "Game of Thrones" recasting might have slipped your notice, though, because both successive actors were buried beneath make-up. That recasting would be the Night King, leader of the undead White Walkers. In seasons 4 and 5, the Night King was played by Welsh actor Richard Brake; you might recognize him as Joe Chill (murderer of Bruce Wayne's parents) from "Batman Begins,...

Why Melora Hardin Was Fired & Replaced On Back To The Future
Image
Filmmaking can be a pitiless business, particularly for actors. While it's true all creatives are being judged on their personal attributes, performers face the added pressure of having to embody the physical and emotional attributes necessary to play a given part. This means they're being hired or rejected based on their very appearance and essence as a human being. This is rough for anyone, but especially brutal for young actors who are in the midst of puberty or just on the other side of it. Furthermore, it can be rough on the folks behind the camera; an actor still getting comfortable within their growing body might dazzle in an interview, but once you get them on set, they're just not right for the part. Just ask the tremendously talented thespian Tamzin Merchant and the folks responsible for bringing George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" to life for HBO. They...

Why Game Of Thrones Replaced Its Original Daenerys Actress With Emilia Clarke
Image
A lot is riding on television pilots. That's essentially your first episode, so it's going to determine whether the network or streamer moves forward on your series or adds it to the scrap heap of shows that almost were.

While shooting the pilot, several issues might arise. Oftentimes, that issue is casting. Be it a matter of chemistry or being just plain wrong for a role that initially felt like a perfect fit, actors can find themselves jettisoned even after the pilot is finished. "Gilligan's Island" had some casting slip-ups before bringing together an ensemble for the ages. On a decidedly more serious (and pricey) note, there's "Game of Thrones," the pilot for which went so incredibly sideways they had to reshoot the whole thing and recast one of the most pivotal roles.

The big loser here was Tamzin Merchant, a then up-and-coming young actor who'd landed what she thought...

George R.R. Martin Was “Tempted” But Ultimately Refused a ‘Game of Thrones’ Cameo
Image
Game of Thrones almost showed a cameo scene of George R.R. Martin, a chance the author decided against. The famed HBO series wrapped up in 2019 after eight installments, but even today, fans are still lamenting its anticlimactic ending.

Credits: George R.R. Martin via CBS News

Martin’s planned appearance on the show won’t change the fact that the story ended most disappointingly, and perhaps it was a good call that he chose not to accept the showrunners’ offer. Not only was it impractical on his part but it also wouldn’t appease the dismay of fans.

George R.R. Martin Almost Had a Cameo in Game of Thrones Season 8

David Benioff and Dan Weiss offered George R.R. Martin a cameo scene for the final season of Game of Thrones. In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, the author revealed he was enticed to say yes, although he ultimately declined.

Why George R.R. Martin Rejected A Cameo In HBO's Game Of Thrones
Image
In 2019, George R.R. Martin watched, along with the rest of the world, as "Game of Thrones" ended not with a bang but with a whimper. According to the author, who penned the source material "A Song of Ice and Fire," he could have physically appeared in the final season if he'd wanted to ... but he declined the offer when it came from showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

"David and Dan invited me to a cameo in one of the final episodes, which I was tempted to do," Martin told Entertainment Weekly back in February of 2019, before the series finally concluded. "But I didn't think just for the sake of a cameo I could take the time to return to Belfast." Martin lives in New Mexico full time, and to be fair to the author, that's a really long trek to make just for a short appearance. There's also the...

Among these scrapped projects was Naomi Watts’ untitled prequel series, which was set to be helmed by Kingsman scribe Jane Goldman and author George R.R. Martin.

“It was much more true to the books”: One Game of Thrones Scene Was Changed When Emilia Clarke Replaced Original Daenerys Targaryen Actor
Image
When one is making an adaptation of a work as iconic as Game of Thrones, there are several things to keep in mind. Considering how the book series had some of the most dedicated fans in the fantasy genre long before the series came around, it is not surprising that there was a lot of pressure when the show was being made.

With this in mind, one would assume that the series was very cautious about the changes it chose to make from the book to the screen, trying to make it as minimal as possible. However, it would seem that they were more than comfortable taking a few liberties here and there, even in the very first episode of the series.

There is no better example of this than the story of the two pilots and how Daenerys...

Game of Thrones had a rough start with the infamous scrapped pilot episode, in which everything seemed to have gone wrong, from the storyline to the casting. Even Jason Momoa felt he wasn’t truly present until they changed the actress playing Daenerys Targaryen.

Along with the recasting came the modification of a few significant details which made author George R.R. Martin infuriated. He didn’t like what they had done with the intimate scene between Daenerys and Khal Drogo.

Jason Momoa Wasn’t Feeling His Role As Khal Drogo Until Emilia Clarke Joined Game Of Thrones

In the original version of the pilot episode of Game of Thrones, Daenerys Targaryen was played by actress Tamzin Merchant. When they shot the intimate scene after her wedding with Jason Momoa’s Khal Drogo, she was not actually abused but it was a consensual act.

10 TV Shows That Recast A Major Character After The Pilot

Unaired pilots have led to important recasts that vastly improve iconic TV characters. Replacements like Emilia Clarke as Daenerys redefine the portrayal of iconic roles. Talented actors like Alyson Hannigan were the second choice to bring beloved characters like Willow to life.

Several major TV shows featured a certain actor in the pilot episode that was recast for the rest of the series. This may have been an unaired pilot shown to network executives before the show officially aired many TV show spinoffs that never aired met their end at this stage. An early pilot like this allows producers to see what they have so far and decide if the series is worth pursuing, or if some changes need to be made before filming the rest of it such as finding an actor more suited to the character.

Some TV recasts were even better than the actor they replaced, whether...

The sophomore season of "House of the Dragon" may have gone out on somewhat of an anticlimactic note, leaving viewers hanging just when it seemed we were gearing up for two of the biggest events of the series thus far, but the finale still managed to pack several surprises for fans to obsess over. “It was, sad to say, left on the cutting-room floor”: George R.R. Martin Actually Had a Game of Thrones Cameo, HBO Refused to Air the Episode
Image
Being the first episode, a show’s future highly hinges on how the pilot is received, as a lackluster beginning can prompt studios to pull the plugs off the show early. While exceptions exist, as The Office went on to become extremely successful despite an underwhelming beginning, oftentimes, great shows succeed in nailing the pilot, and Game of Thrones is no different.

But before Winter Is Coming premiered to critical acclaim, the original pilot for the show came close to getting the whole show canned, which featured a cameo from George R.R. Martin.

“We never discussed it”: George R. R. Martin Absolutely Hated 1 Emilia Clarke Scene in Game of Thrones That Even the Actress Found Hard to Film
Image
The world of Game of Thrones has always been an eventful one, irrespective of the fate that befalls the characters and the gruesome incidents that traumatize the viewers. But even for the audience who comes from a background of having read A Song of Ice and Fire, the HBO series could get a little daunting due to the nature of its transgressions from the original text.

Years later, the author, who noticed one such transgression, himself let his wrath be known for a line that was crossed by the actions of his own characters. In one radical change instituted by the creators of the HBO show, an incident that was fairly harmless in the books was transformed into a horrific plot device.

“I wasn’t afraid of dying”: Emilia Clarke’s Biggest Fear in Game of Thrones Surpassed Death Itself Proving Actress’ Insane Dedication as the Khaleesi
Image
After graduating from Drama Centre London, British actress Emilia Clarke made her debut as a professional actress in the 2009 British soap opera, Doctors. Her third professional role was as Daenerys Targaryen in the HBO drama series Game of Thrones, based on George R. R. Martin’s fantasy novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire.

Tamzin Merchant was the actress originally cast as the character of Daenerys, but the role went to Clarke when the pilot episode was reshot in early 2010 (via Yahoo). The role quickly catapulted her to global fame. Here dedication to the character can be deduced from the fact that even death did not scare her.

10 Times TV Actors We're Replaced After Filming Had Already Started
Image
Actors on TV shows can be replaced for various reasons, such as changes to the show or contractual obligations. Tamzin Merchant was initially cast as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones but was replaced by Emilia Clarke after the unaired pilot. Lisa Kudrow was originally cast on Frasier but was fired and later found success on Friends.

Sometimes an actor gets cast on a television series and after a few seasons something comes up and their role gets recast, however, in other instances, they were replaced much quicker and it was only after a very short amount of filming that they were forced to say goodbye. This can happen for several different reasons, often actors get replaced due to changes from an unaired pilot which meant aspects of the series were reshuffled or altered. Other times, contractual obligations actually stop the actor from taking up a role despite both them...

Salem Recap & Ending Explained
Image
"Salem" was a unique and boundary-pushing series that blended horror, fantasy, and romance, leaving audiences completely bewitched. Despite high critical praise, the show struggled to find a large audience, but it paved the way for other shows to follow in its footsteps. The series finale of "Salem" was dark and twisted, with characters like Cotton sacrificing himself and Mary refusing to complete the ritual, symbolizing her transformation from villain to hero.

A proper Salem recap must cover not only the shocking twists and turns of the show's three seasons but also the hellfire and brimstone ending that left many completely bewitched. Debuting in 2014, the WGN America series Salem is set in the eponymous town during the 17th century and follows a coven of powerful witches who secretly rule the colonial village. Unflinching in its approach, the series established a unique tone that blends horror, fantasy, and a touch of romance into one exciting package.

Game Of Thrones' Failed First Pilot Has An Eerie Connection To The Real-Life Titanic
Image
One of the stranger things about the history of "Game of Thrones" is that two pilots were filmed for the series. General practice in television is that a network will order one episode of a show to see how it turns out. A test subject, if you will. Based on the success of that pilot, they will green light the series or can it. Rarer are the instances of a pilot being shot and not going well, but the network has some faith in the show that they opt to shoot a new pilot for the series. This is what happened with "Star Trek" all the way back in the 1960s, where the original pilot, "The Cage" (which didn't even include Captain Kirk), was shelved and a new pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," was made and aired as the show's third episode.

"Game of Thrones" is another one of these shows.

Orlando Bloom Fights With A Fae In New Carnival Row Clip [Exclusive]
Image
Screen Rant is pleased to present an exclusive clip from this week's episode of Carnival Row. The fantastical Prime Video series is set in an alternate Victorian world that's mired in interracial conflict between humans and fae. When a number of gruesome murders take place in The Burgue, human detective Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom) attempts to find the culprit and falls in love with the faerie Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne).

While season 2 of Carnival Row serves as the show's last, showrunner Erik Oleson had prepared everything to bring the epic story to a satisfying conclusion. As Philo continues his investigations, Vignette and a group called the Black Raven seek vengeance against The Burgue’s human oppressors — namely the Breakspears. After Philo prevented the Black Raven from killing a fellow human, Sergeant Dombey, the couple broke up and Vignette was arrested. But that doesn't mean Philo's love for her has diminished,...

Carnival Row Season 2 Premiere Review: Fight for a New Dawn
Carnival Row (2019)
The wait is finally over. Carnival Row, starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, is back.

Carnival Row Season 2 Episode 1 premiered alongside the second hour, and the drama attempted to reach the heights of the first season's epic finale.

But did it succeed?

Sadly, it only partially succeeded, as the characters being separated made for a disjointed premiere.

Whether due to the three-year gap, or just tired storytelling, Carnival Row lost some of its urgency but kept most of its intimacy.

Some significant losses on the fae side did occur, but none mainly made us feel too much emotion, at least until the end of Carnival Row Season 2 Episode 2.

But more on that later. The premiere hours' highlights match the first season's highlights: incredible world-building, character development, and performances.

Bloom and Delevingne gave 110 to their roles, and it seemed they didn't have a lengthy break. Their chemistry still faltered, but it's gotten better.

Carnival Row Season 2 Review: Intricate, Fantastical World Still Lacks Spark
Image
Carnival Row season 2 picks up shortly after season 1 ends, but it’s been so long since that season was released (in August 2019) that a five-minute-long refresher was indeed needed at the start of the season. In its second and final outing, the Prime Video series still has a lot going for it — the costume design, the fantastical premise, the setting, power and political dynamics, and interesting characters — but it is somehow still missing a spark of intrigue that would keep viewers hooked. With so much going on, character development gets lost, and the story, often heavy-handed in its metaphors, is agonizingly slow at times and fascinating at others. All told, however, Carnival Row season 2 consists of the same muted arcs, but it manages to at least bring its multiple subplots together to wrap things up.

With the Fae imprisoned on Carnival Row with nowhere to go, Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom...
