The 5th Wave: 2016 Dystopian YA Movie Finds New Life on Netflix
Image
YA dystopian movie adaptations were a major trend during the 2010s. It all started with The Hunger Games movies in 2012, which, based on the books by Suzanne Collins, have made $3.3 billion at the box office and lived on even after the trend has died, with The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes becoming a hit in 2023 and a sequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, set for 2026.

Other examples that found success include the three Maze Runner movies, based on the books by James Dashner, which made $949 million at the box office, and the three Divergent movies, based on the books by Veronica Roth, which, despite being panned by critics, made $765 million at the box office.

Other examples include I Am Number Four (2011), Ender's Game, The Host, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (all 2013), The Giver (2014), and The Darkest Minds (2018). Steven Spielberg even got in on the trend with Ready Player One (2018). However,...

Image
A TV series adaptation of the “Wolfenstein” video games is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, Variety has learned exclusively.

Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, but the (incredible) official logline of the series simply states, “The story of killing Nazis is evergreen.”

Patrick Somerville is attached to serve as the creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the project under his chaoticgood.tv production banner. Jonah Nolan, Lisa Joy, and Athena Wickham will executive produce via Kilter Films. James Altman of Keyframe Films and Jerk Gustafsson of “Wolfenstein” developer MachineGames will also executive produce.

The “Wolfenstein” franchise helped popularize first-person shooter video games. The games have largely centered on U.S. World War II solider William “B.J.” Blazkowicz. In the games, Blazkowicz goes behind enemy lines to fight the Nazis, only to discover they are engaging in bizarre experiments and the occult in an attempt to...

Jordana Mollick, Mike Farah & Joe Farrell Talk Future Of Comedy On The Big Screen – Avp Summit
Image
As Paramount gears up for the theatrical release of its The Naked Gun revival in August, the future of scripted comedy was under scrutiny at the Avp Summit producers’ event in northern Italy on Wednesday.

Former Paramount exec Gary Lucchesi, who oversaw the production of the original The Naked Gun movies in the 1990s, chaired the talk, having suggested the topic on the basis of his own desire to see comedies back on the big screen again.

He was joined by The Idea Of You producer Jordana Mollick, co-founder of comedy-focused Semi-Formal Productions with filmmaker Michael Showalter; former Funny or Die execs Mike Farah and Joe Farrell, who now work as independent producers, as well as Italian producer Verdiana Bixio, whose company Publispei is currently filming a reboot of the popular comedy show I Cesaroni.

Mollick, who is riding high on the streaming success of Anne Hathaway romcom The Idea Of You,...

Sci-Fi’s New Era Belongs to Women — And It’s About Time
Image
Science fiction has always asked us to imagine the future. But for decades, that imagined future rarely featured women in charge.

Certainly, there were exceptions, notably the iconic ones, such as Ellen Ripley in Alien or Sarah Connor in The Terminator. They were tough, smart, and unforgettable. But they stood out because they were the exception, not the rule.

That’s finally starting to change. We’re no longer surprised to see women leading sci-fi series. In fact, we’ve started to expect it. And frankly, it’s making the genre better.

(Courtesy of Prime Video) Alien Returns with a Familiar Spirit

Take the upcoming Alien: Earth series, for example.

Set to debut on FX, it stars Sydney Chandler as Wendy, the latest in a line of women trying to survive in one of the harshest fictional universes ever created.

Before Fallout, Ella Purnell Starred In A Major Superhero Misfire
Image
Best known now for her roles in dark TV shows like "Yellowjackets" and "Fallout," Ella Purnell is one of those performers whose filmography goes much further back than you'd think. She's the type of actor where you'll watch an older movie for the first time in a while and realize, "Wait, that was her?" I myself had that exact realization when I rewatched "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" for the first time since it came out in 2016. Elsewhere, on Twitter, it seems other people are having the same realization about the 2013 movie "Kick-Ass 2."

As "Kick-Ass" fans may recall, the superhero sequel featured a storyline about Mindy, aka Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), trying to transition from a life of fighting crime to one of navigating regular high school drama. In doing so, she runs afoul of mean girl Brooke (Claudia Lee), who bullies Mindy in ways that might...

The Equalizer 3 (2023) Movie Ending Explained – Maintaining the effectiveness of an ageing action star
Image
This is the second iteration out of three iterations of “The Equalizer” franchise: the original 1980s television series, the movie trilogy starring Denzel Washington and directed by Antoine Fuqua, and a reboot of the television series starring Queen Latifah. In all of the instances, it followed a retired intelligence agent who used the skills they had learned throughout his career to extract vigilante justice on behalf of the innocent.

The most famous of all these iterations, inevitably, follows Denzel Washington as retired CIA intelligence agent Robert McCall. As the first film opens, he lives a quiet life in Boston and works at a hardware store. He befriends Teri, a teenage sex worker played by Chloe Grace Moretz. She is beaten by her pimp in front of Robert and taken in by the Russian Mafia. Offering to buy her freedom, McCall is refused and chooses to make quick work of them in brutal succession.

The Batman Fans Need To Watch The Director's Horror Masterpiece While They Wait For The Sequel
Image
When I watch "The Batman," I never want it to end. Even three hours isn't enough time in this world, and the spin-off show "The Penguin" could only tide me over so much. Even "The Penguin" setting the stage for "The Batman Part II" is bittersweet because that sequel remains years away.

Matt Reeves' "The Batman Part II" has been delayed several times. The movie is currently set to open October 1, 2027, but DC Studios co-chief James Gunn told Entertainment Weekly that he hadn't seen Reeves' script as of the end of March 2025.

It's easy to feel cynical right now. On top of these delays, Gunn is reimagining the DC Universe on film and it's difficult to see Reeves and actor Robert Pattinson's Batman fitting into that. DC Studios has even announced a different Batman movie, "The Brave and the Bold," featuring Bruce Wayne and his son Damian/Robin.

But...

“Nobody Needs To See Carrie Again”: Mike Flanagan's Latest Stephen King Adaptation Gives the 50 Year Old Source Material a Relevancy Update
Image
Meddling with classics is tricky. At the same time that fans like the idea of experiencing their favorite stories once again, remakes always have the risk of quickly becoming irrelevant if they add nothing to a story that people already know. In Carrie's case, Mike Flanagan (The Fall of the House of Usher) will be touching on two classics at once: the best-selling novel by Stephen King and the horror classic by Brian De Palma. The series is coming to Prime Video, and cast member Matthew Lillard (Scream 7) talked about Flanagan's approach to the material.

Lillard — who will play Principal Grayle — spoke about Carrie during a participation on The Kingcast, a podcast that centers around all the stories created by the famous author. He was promoting Life of Chuck, which is another Stephen King story adapted by Flanagan, so Carrie was a natural segue for the conversation. The actor...

"Nobody Needs To See Carrie Again": Carrie Star Matthew Lillard Breaks Down Why Mike Flanagan Is Updating Stephen King's Story 50 Years Later
Image
Carrie star Matthew Lillard details why Mike Flanagan is remaking the Stephen King story. Carrie was King's first published novel in 1974, and Brian De Palma directed an adaptation in 1976. The popularity of the movie helped boost King's profile and played a role in having him become a household name. Carrie follows the story of a telekinetic teenage girl who is bullied by her peers and abused by her hyper-religious mother. Her story ends in tragedy after she lashes out after a disastrous prom. The upcoming Carrie series on Prime Video will update the story to reflect modern times.

"Unlike Anything That Anyone’s Ever Done With The Part Before" Mike Flanagan Talks Casting Summer Howell As Carrie
Image
Carrie is material ripe for an update, and Mike Flanagan thinks he's putting together the perfect team to do it. The frequent Stephen King collaborator recently went through countless auditionees before finding his Carrie White.

“I think we looked at 1,800 different candidates for that role,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “It was an exhaustive process.” But in the end, the lead role went to Summer Howell, an actress who had already had experience in horror. And Flanagan is thrilled to work with her. “I think we ended up with the right actor for the part,” he said. “It took a long time to find her, and I can’t wait for people to see what she’s doing, because it’s unlike anything that anyone’s ever done with the part before.”

The most famous of Howell's Carrie predecessors is Sissy Spacek, who played the title character in the 1976 Brian De Palma version.

'Carrie': Mike Flanagan Heaps Praise on Summer Howell as Iconic Horror Character in the Prime Video Reboot
Image
The Stephen King horror classic of 1974, Carrie, is set to receive another reboot. This time, the chosen format is a TV series, and the visionary in charge of bringing it to life is Mike Flanagan, the director who has previously adapted the author's works Doctor Sleep and Gerald's Game. Little is known about the upcoming Prime Video series, but Flanagan recently revealed why everyone should be excited about the new take on the horror classic.

Naturally, one of the key components of the series is the casting–especially that of Carrie White. Summer Howell, known for her roles in the TV series Channel Zero and films like Cult of Chucky and Hunter Hunter, has now been chosen to portray the shy-yet-powerful teenager. And while Flanagan says she wasn't an easy find, he also says that she's the reason why fans should be excited for the show.

Flanagan is currently promoting his latest film,...

‘Carrie’ Showrunner Mike Flanagan “Can’t Wait” for Viewers to See Summer Howell in Title Role
Image
Mike Flanagan, who is steering Prime Video’s upcoming Carrie series, says the production looked at more than a thousand submissions for the lead role before deciding on Summer Howell.

“I think we looked at 1,800 different candidates for that role,” Flanagan told The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of his new film The Life of Chuck, his latest collaboration with Carrie author Stephen King. “It was an exhaustive process.”

Sissy Spacek famously starred as telekentic teenager Carrie White in the 1976 film adaptation of King’s 1974 book, while Chloe Grace Moretz took on the role for the 2013 remake. Other actresses who have portrayed the character on both the big and small screen include Angela Bettis in a 2002 TV movie and Emily Bergl in the poorly reviewed 1999 sequel The Rage: Carrie 2.

“I think we ended up with the right actor for the part,” Flanagan said of Howell, whose credits include Cult of Chucky...

"It's Unlike Anything Anyone's Done Before": Mike Flanagan Teases New Carrie Actor In Stephen King Adaptation
Image
Carrie showrunner Mike Flanagan teases something different from the lead actor. Carrie will be a modern update on the classic Stephen King story, coming to Prime Video as a new series. King's 1974 novel was famously adapted by Brian De Palma in 1976, but more takes on the novel have been filmed. The Rage: Carrie 2 was released in 1999, a TV movie aired in 2002, and another theatrical version starring Chloë Grace Moretz came out in 2013. The upcoming Carrie series has been teased as having an updated take.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Flanagan discusses the process of casting Summer H. Howell as the titular character. He mentions that 1,800 different performers auditioned for the role, and that Howell's performance will be "unlike anything that anyone's ever done with the part before." He also shares his excitement for viewers to be able to see what Howell will bring to the role. Check out Flanagan's full statement below.

No Power, No Responsibility: Why We Still Love ‘Kick-Ass’ 15 Years Later
Image
Millennials — particularly those of us who fall on the younger side of that generational bracket — have a grating tendency to exaggerate the divide that separates us from those who were born just a few years later.

Not only are we inclined to turn everything into a weird, one-sided pissing contest with Gen Z by, say, pitching our Saturday morning cartoons against theirs or banging on about how much better music was in the heyday of nu metal, but we also insist that there can be no shared cultural understanding between someone who came of age in the early 2010s, versus someone who came of age towards the tail end of that very same decade.

Which is patently ridiculous, of course, unless we’re genuinely supposed to believe that a 25-year-old nowadays has no frame of reference for what the internet was like in 2013, nor any awareness of things like Marvel,...

'Kick-Ass' Mark Millar & John Romita Jr. Reunite for Adaptation of New Comic 'Psychic Sam'
Image
Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., the creative team behind one the most beloved comic book adaptations of all time, Kick-Ass, are re-teaming to launch a new comic book series already being eyed for a feature film adaptation. In 2008, comic icons Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. collaborated on the highly popular cult comic Kick-Ass, which deconstructed the superhero genre for the 21st century. Before the first issue hit comic shelves, the feature film rights were purchased, and it was released in 2010, directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong, and Nicolas Cage.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Millar and Romita Jr. have launched a Kickstarter for a new comic series, "Psychic Sam." The series will revolve around a man who knows about murders before they happen, with a voice in his head telling him the name and address of future killers. Producer Ivan Atkinson,...

For Those About to Slash, We Salute You: 14 Military Horrors to Stream for Memorial Day
Image
War films are horror films, aren’t they? Both genres explore inevitable death intertwined with moral quandaries and are full of suspense. Come and See is often hailed as one of the scariest films and Son of Saul almost plays like a found footage in Auschwitz.

There is a thin line between the two, but military horror goes further by blending the literal and figurative. This hybrid subgenre repeatedly uses the zombie as the antagonist of choice, a reason identified by Scholar Kevin Wetmore in Post-9/11 Horror in American Cinema: “Zombies cannot be reasoned with, cannot be negotiated with, they seek only to replicate themselves, which also makes them an excellent metaphor for terrorists.”

That said, in recognition of Memorial Day here are 14 military horrors to choose from that aren’t all just about the undead. The POVs range from civilians trapped in military culture, teen cadets, facing barriers as...

Robert De Niro Somehow Made Zac Efron See Dave Franco’s Comedy Dominance in $270M Film
Image
Zac Efron thought his terrible De Niro impression would kill… till Dave Franco walked in and stole the damn party. Staging a feverishly fun fight between family and fraternity, Neighbors is that $10-cover party you’d crash in a heartbeat—red Solo cup in hand, toga optional.

And while we don’t talk enough about how hard this film went, it’s time we start. Especially when it comes to Zac, who genuinely worked on his comedy chops but walked away from filming with a lesson: sometimes, bad isn’t funny enough… especially when your bro’s crushing it like he’s actually De Niro.

As Neighbors turns 11, let’s rewind to the scene that had us all in stitches—and proved once and for all that Franco came to play.

Chloë Grace Moretz's Forgotten Sci-Fi Flop Becomes A Hulu Hit 9 Years Later
Image
In Rick Yancey's "The 5th Wave" — the first entry in the eponymous YA novel series — an alien invasion nearly decimates the Earth's population. Scattered survivors struggle to get through another day, including Cassie Sullivan, a 16-year-old who embarks on a dangerous solitary mission to search for her brother. After a very close brush with death, Cassie crosses paths with Evan Walker, her self-proclaimed savior who may or may not be harboring dubious motivations.

Yancey's "The 5th Wave" presents itself as a "The Hunger Games"-esque political thriller, but lacks its sharp, scathing edge. That said, Yancey spins a compelling yarn of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic tropes, which manage to intrigue despite being a tad predictable. The first book alone does not reflect the series' merit, of course; the trilogy draws a parallel between the alien invasion and oppressive colonial forces, repackaging themes cherry-picked from classic sci-fi entries like H.
