The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.

All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Gravitas Ventures has picked up North American rights to upcoming gangland thriller MobKing, which it will release in select theaters and on demand May 26.

The deal was completed by Danielle Gasher, senior director of acquisitions at Gravitas Ventures, and Anthony Caliendo of Button Man Films.

Button Man Films has also signed with Adler & Associates Entertainment for international rights on MobKing, which will make its world market debut in Cannes.

MobKing, which first screened at the 2022 American Film Market, is based on the award-winning web series of the same name, created by and starring Ciro Dapagio (Suitcasing, Silent Partners) who reprises his role as Mike White, a gangster who has distinguished himself as a man of honor, a stand-up guy, but after being released from a lengthy prison sentence finds himself the target of Miami’s most notorious criminal organization. Exclusive: Josh McDermitt (The Walking Dead) has joined Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson, Tony Award nominee Thomas Sadoski and Josh Lucas in the cast of Lilly, the political thriller co-written and directed by Rachel Feldman, which is currently in production in Georgia.

Based on the life of Lilly Ledbetter, the Alabama woman for whom President Obama named his first piece of legislation—The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act of 2009—the film explores the psychological cost of putting one’s life on the line for justice. At the heart of the social justice drama is a love story between Lilly (Clarkson) and her husband Charles (Lucas), a man who stood by his wife despite life-threatening challenges and significant family strife.

McDermitt will play the ambitious and unethical Alabama Congressman Dan McGinty. As previously announced, Sadoski is portraying Jon Goldfarb, the Birmingham civil rights attorney who navigated Ledbetter’s legal battles.

From July 23 to July 25, Harrah’s Resort & Casino in Atlantic City will house the boardwalk’s biggest gangster gathering since Nucky Johnson hosted the mob’s Atlantic City Conference in 1929.

“Al Capone will not be coming though,” VirtualCons CEO Michael Mota tells Den of Geek. “Those were the mobsters. I would say this would be the biggest gathering of mobster wannabes.” The Sopranos fan convention has come a long way since it was dreamed up by three gangster movie aficionados from New York, Maryland, and Rhode Island. Tobias Truvillion (Hitch), Taryn Manning (Orange is the New Black), Zach McGowan (Shameless), Chris Tardio (Younger) and Tasha Lawrence (The Looming Tower) have been tapped to star in Sanctioning Evil, an indie action-thriller from Jars Media Group and Novakovic Brothers Films.

Directed by Ante Novakovic, the story centers on Staff Sgt. Barnes (Truvillion), a recently discharged Army veteran who finds his way back into society via a charismatic congressman named Ambrose (McGowan). Barnes and Ambrose walk a fine line between covert military operations on civilian soil and unsanctioned retribution toward an underground criminal element, all while being tracked by FBI special agent Kensington (Manning).

Actor Vinny Vella has died. According to a post on Vella’s personal Facebook page made presumably by a family member, Vella passed away late Wednesday, February 20. He was 71. View the heartfelt Facebook post below:

“We are saddened to report that Vinny Vella has passed and I’m sure that no one more saddened than himself. Vinny loved life from his family to his friends and fans he was easily one of the funniest, endearing actors to have ever graced the screen. Vinny also had integrity and pride rarely seen. Arguably the fastest on the draw, king of the comebacks. His verbal jousting was legendary but many know Vinny for his favorite saying – ‘Who’s better than you?’ Well Vinny, I think we all can agree on the answer to that, it was you, it always was you! Sony Pictures is developing a movie version of “Faith,” based on the Valiant Comics series of the same name with Neal Moritz, Toby Jaffe and Dan Mintz attached to produce for Sony Pictures.

The studio has hired “Escape Room” writer Maria Melnik to write the script. The “Faith” comics are centered on Faith Herbert, a geeky teen obsessed with comics and science fiction, in addition to having the power of flight and telekinesis. Created by writer Jim Shooter and David Lapham, she is a member of the Harbinger Renegades and first appeared in 1992.

Malin Akerman, Kat Dennings, and Jane Seymour will star in the Thanksgiving-themed comedy “Friendsgiving,” written and directed by Nicol Paone in her directorial debut.

Akerman will play a glamorous, newly divorced actor with Dennings as her recently dumped lesbian best friend and Seymour as her gorgeous Swedish mother. Together, along with their motley crew of close friends and strange acquaintances, they host a dysfunctional and chaotic Thanksgiving dinner.

Akerman is also collaborating with Ben Stiller as one of the film’s producers. The duo starred in the 2007 comedy “The Heartbreak Kid.”

Stiller will produce under his production banner, Red Hour, alongside Nicky Weinstock and Haroon Saleem. Endeavor Content is co-financing the project with Red Hour and handling global sales.
