Nell Louise Phelps

She was a member of the Women's Army Corps during from 1943-1946, and was given an honorable discharge. She joined the military in order to get out of a dysfunctional marriage.

Member of the National Organization for Women. She founded the organization's San Gabriel Valley - Whittier chapter in 1979.

Her partner, Grace Bukowski, gifted her papers and personal effects to the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives after her death. The Johnnie Phelps Papers and Memorabilia collection number is Coll2008-068.

[on her service in WWII] "There was a tolerance for lesbianism if they needed you. The battalion that I was in was probably about ninety-seven percent lesbian."
