‘MasterChef Sri Lanka’ Baking At Free TV Network

Calling Sri Lanka’s best amateur cooks: Time to get you recipe books out. A local version of MasterChef is in the works at Sri Lankan free-to-air network ITN, and will debut in September as a 25-episode season. Reality TV Production will make the show in association with Nilenda Deshapriya Productions. The Banijay Entertainment format as been remade 70 times before, ranking MasterChef among the most globally-popular formats. It sees amateur cooks have their food judged by a team of professional chefs and critics, with one eventually crowned the MasterChef. “This globally celebrated culinary format will see aspiring chefs showcase their talent, passion, and creativity, marking a new chapter in Sri Lankan television history. Exclusive: Sarah Jane Morris and Alexis Vazquez have joined the cast of Jorge Xolalpa’s immigration thriller Huehxolotl.

Deadline has learned that they will join Maya Zapata, Elyfer Torres, Katherine Castro and Alexander James Rodriguez in the film, which is billed as a “tense, character-driven legal thriller exploring the emotional, cultural, and systemic battles faced by undocumented immigrants in America.” We revealed news of Xolalpa’s pic in March.

Brothers & Sisters star Morris will play Helen, a district attorney who, while passing by, witnesses an illegal Ice detention attempt targeting lead character Xochitl and her sister Nayeli (Torres) outside their family-owned restaurant. Moved by the injustice, she intervenes, risking her career and personal safety to help the sisters evade an unlawful deportation.

Eric Roberts Joins ‘Lolita’

Exclusive: Oscar nominee Eric Roberts (Runaway Train) has joined Johnny Ortiz (Peppermint) and Alexis Vazquez in feature drama Lolita from director Jorge Xolalpa. Filming is currently underway on the Mighty Aphrodite Pictures movie. The plot centers on Jesus (Vazquez), a man who after being released from jail tries to get custody of his daughter. Roberts will portray jaded police officer Jones who grows to care for Jesus’ wellbeing. Pic is being produced by Xolalpa at Mighty Aphrodite Pictures and Alfredo Widman. Roberts, whose recent credits include Damien Chazelle’s Babylon for Paramount Pictures, is repped by Sovereign Talent Group and Scott Carlson Entertainment.
