LGBT Coming-of-Age Movie ‘Cocoon’ Sells to U.K., Other Territories (Exclusive)

Sales agent M-Appeal has closed distribution deals for LGBT coming-of-age movie “Cocoon,” the opening film of Generation 14Plus at the Berlin Film Festival, with the U.K. and several other territories.

The film, directed by Leonie Krippendorff, stars Jella Haase and Lena Klenke. Haase won the talent showcase Shooting Stars at the Berlin Film Festival in 2016. She also starred in this year’s Berlinale competition film “Berlin Alexanderplatz,” directed by Burhan Qurbani. Klenke starred in Lars Kraume’s “The Silent Revolution” and Netflix series “How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast).”

Peccadillo Pictures will distribute “Cocoon” in the U.K and Ireland, with theatrical and premium VOD releases expected at the end of October. Queer Kino has acquired all rights in Czech Republic and Slovak Republic, except free TV, and it’s planning to release the title in theaters in December.

M-Appeal secures sales at the virtual Cannes market.

Berlin-based M-Appeal has closed Us and UK deals for Berlinale queer award-winner No Hard Feelings.

The romantic drama has been acquired by leading LGBT distributor Tla Releasing, which will represent the film in North American and work with London-based outfit Compulsory on distribution in the UK and Ireland. It is the first move into distribution for London-based production company Compulsory.

Thessaloniki Goes to Cannes Sees Greek Directors Contend With Covid-19

Greek directors are contending with the coronavirus crisis, on top of their country’s pre-existing economic struggles, by weaving the pandemic into their narratives and project presentations.

That’s one trend that surfaced when five work-in-progress feature films, three docs, were digitally showcased to sales agents, distributors and programmers on Tuesday during Thessaloniki Goes to Cannes, the Cannes Virtual Film Market’s annual pics-in-post industry showcase supported by the Thessaloniki Intl. Film Festival.

“This past month during this pandemic period many of us were cooking, and are still cooking at home,” said director Angeliki Antoniou presenting her drama “Green Sea” which turns on a woman who has lost her memory but not ability to cook, and so is afforded a second opportunity in life.

Marché du Film selects 20 projects for Goes To Cannes showcase

Haf, New Horizons, Thessaloniki and Nfdc Film Bazaar have each contributed five.

Twenty works-in-progress from four international film events have been selected for the online Marché du Film’s Goes To Cannes showcase, which runs from June 22-24.

Five titles will be presented by each of Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf); Poland’s New Horizons International Film Festival; Greece’s Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Tiff); and for the first time, India’s Nfdc Film Bazaar.

Sales agent M-Appeal has picked up Leonie Krippendorff’s lesbian love story “Cocoon,” which world premieres in the Generation section of the Berlin Film Festival.

Krippendorff’s debut fiction feature, set in Berlin’s multicultural Kreuzberg neighborhood, follows Nora, a shy 14-year-old girl as she makes her way into adulthood: she falls in love with another girl, learns to stand up for herself, and gets her heart broken for the first time.

The cast includes Jella Haase, one of the stars of hit comedy “Fack Ju Göhte” and Burhan Qurbani’s “Alexanderplatz,” Lena Klenke, star of Netflix series “How to Sell Drugs Online,” Lena Urzendowsky and Elina Vildanova. The film is produced by Jost Hering Filme.
