Often mistaken for actor Karl Malden.

As he bears a strong resemblance to Karl Malden, he once guest-starred on Malden's TV series, Las calles de San Francisco (1972). The men have also both portrayed Gen. Omar Bradley at different times.

He and his third wife, actress Patricia Herd, are supporters of the League for Crippled Children in Los Angeles. Wife Patricia is a past President of the organization and he an ambassador with the March of Dimes.

Via his work on Viaje a las estrellas: Voyager (1995), Richard plays the gutbucket for the intergalactic country jazz group, "The Enterprise Blues Band". Formed in the late 1990s, the band has released two CDs of primarily original songs.

According to Charles Ziarko in his article on Richard in the film magazine Classic Images, June 2008, the actor's father fought in the South Pacific during WWII, developed elephantiasis, and died of his illness within a short time. Richard kept the flag from his father's military funeral.

Appeared in a stage production of "Death of a Salesman", with his wife Patricia Herd, at the Ventura Court Theatre.

He was a lifelong Democrat.

His son, Richard Thomas Herd III, became a personal trainer and gym manager. His daughter Erica, a Fulbright scholar, became a legal secretary; she is also a self-styled poet.

Upon his death, he was cremated and his ashes given to his wife.

Appeared in two films nominated for Best Picture Oscar: Todos los hombres del presidente (1976) and ¡Huye! (2017).

He died on the same day as actor Anthony James.

Born on exactly the same date as Donna Douglas (of "Beverly Hillbillies" fame).

He guest starred in two unrelated television series featuring a regular character named Sam Beckett: Playa de China (1988) and Viajeros en el tiempo (1989).
