In today’s film news roundup, Kumail Nanjiani has been cast as a journalist, Daisy Ridley boards Imax’s “Asteroid Hunters,” “Best Summer Ever” leads off a festival, Shelley Duvall gets an honor and “Dark Harvest” lands at MGM.

Kumail Nanjiani will star in the political thriller “The Independent,” which is being introduced to buyers by The Exchange at the Berlin Film Festival.

He will portray a journalist who uncovers a conspiracy, which places the fate of the election in his hands with America’s first viable independent presidential candidate poised for victory.

“Kumail is a great actor with global recognition and he serves as the cornerstone for an incredible ensemble cast that we are excited to announce shortly,” said Brian O’Shea of The Exchange.

Amy Rice, who was nominated for an Emmy for “By the People: The Election of Barack Obama,” is directing “The Independent” from a script by Evan Parter.

The executive arrives from Fox, where he most recently served as executive vice-president of international distribution.

Dehmel becomes executive vice-president, head of global distribution of Imax Entertainment, and senior vice-president of Imax Corporation.

He reports directly to Greg Foster, Imax Entertainment CEO and senior executive vice-president of Imax Corporation.

Dehmel will lead distribution efforts for Imax Dmr titles and original content across the network of more than 1,110 Imax theatres in more than 70 countries.

He succeeds Phil Groves, who will leave Imax on October 1 to produce his documentary, IMAX’s Asteroid Impact, which the IMAX Original Film Fund is financing. Groves will continue as an Imax consultant.

Craig Dehmel, who recently exited his post as EVP International Distribution at 20th Century Fox, has landed at Imax. The company today says it has appointed Dehmel to the role of EVP, Head of Global Distribution, Imax Entertainment and SVP of Imax Corporation. The savvy 25-year industry vet is succeeding Imax’s Phil Groves, who will leave October 1 to produce a documentary, Imax’s Asteroid Impact.

Dehmel will report directly to Imax Entertainment CEO and Imax Corp Senior EVP Greg Foster. As Imax continues its international expansion, Dehmel will lead the film distribution function for Imax Dmr titles and original content across the global network which currently counts more than 1,110 theaters in over 70 countries.

IMAX Corporation and Lionsgate's Summit Entertainment label today announced the stylized assassin film John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves, will be digitally re-mastered into the immersive IMAX format and released in domestic IMAX theatres starting Oct. 24.

Directed by Chad Stahelski and Chad Stahelski, both of whom worked with Keanu Reeves as stunt technicians on all three of The Matrix films, John Wick tells the story of a retired assassin (Keanu Reeves) who, after suffering a deadly loss, returns to the fray to hunt down the gangsters who wronged him.

The film co-stars Willem Dafoe, Michael Nyqvist, Adrianne Palicki, John Leguizamo, Ian McShane&#160and Bridget Moynahan.

John Wick, which screened last month at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, marks the first IMAX domestic roll-out for Keanu Reeves since The Day the Earth Stood Still in 2008 and the second and third The Matrix films more than five years prior.

James Cameron's blockbuster has achieved another box-office mileston IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox today announced that James Cameron's Avatar has crossed the $200 million mark at IMAX theaters worldwide during the weekend from Friday, February 19, 2010 through Sunday, February 21. During its 10th weekend, the film grossed $4.3 million from 179 IMAX theaters domestically, representing approximately 27% of the film's total domestic three-day weekend gross of $16.2 million. Internationally, the IMAX release grossed $3.9 million from 84 IMAX theaters, bringing the weekend's global IMAX total to approximately $8.2 million and the film's overall IMAX global total to more than $200 million.

Even though the unlikely film Dear John finally bumped Avatar from its seven week box office pole position earlier this month, James Cameron's sci-fi epic is showing little sign of tiring as a revenue generator. Today IMAX Corporation announced that the film has crossed the $200M mark at IMAX theaters worldwide during the weekend from Friday, February 19, 2010 through Sunday, February 21.

Somewhere, we suspect George Lucas is quietly weeping...amongst his piles of money, that is.
