British Society of Cinematographers Honors Excellence at Annual Awards

The British Society of Cinematographers (Bsc) celebrated outstanding achievement in visual storytelling at its annual awards ceremony in London, recognizing top talent across film, television, and music video categories.

Lol Crawley took home the top feature film honor for his work on “The Brutalist,” showcasing an innovative approach to cinematography. Speaking about his technique, Crawley highlighted the unique advantages of the rare VistaVision format. “You end up with a bigger format, which allows for different visual possibilities,”.

The television categories saw notable wins for Jody Lee Lipes, who secured the UK Terrestrial award for the BBC drama “The Listeners,” and Benedict Spence, who earned his first Bsc award for Netflix’s “Eric.”

A touching moment of the evening came with the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to the late Dick Pope, remembered for his remarkable collaborations with director Mike Leigh and his Oscar-nominated work on the 2014 biopic “Mr. Turner.

“The Brutalist’s” Lol Crawley has won the British Society of Cinematographers Award for best cinematography in a feature film award.

Jody Lee Lipes won for his work on the BBC drama “The Listeners.” Lipes took home the award in the television drama (UK Terrestrial) category. In the television drama (International/Streaming) category, Benedict Spence won his first award for his photography for Netflix’s “Eric.”

Daniel Landin was named the winner for his work on the FKA Twigs music video “Eusexua” in the inaugural cinematography in a music video category.

Speaking with Variety for Inside the Frame, Crawley described why he used the rare VistaVision format to shoot Brady Corbet’s film. Society of Camera Operators Awards Film & TV Nominations Revealed

Society of Camera Operators announced today the film and television nominees for its 2025 Soc Awards, which honor the craft of camera operation and celebrate the vital role camera operators and crews play in storytelling.

Vying for the movie prize are the camera pros behind Challengers, Civil War, A Complete Unknown, Wicked and Wolfs. Nominees on the TV side are the operators for episodes of The Bear, Fallout, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Penguin and Yellowstone.

Winners will be honored during the annual Soc Lifetime Achievement Awards weekend on February 14 & 15 at Loews Hollywood.

The lensers behind Netflix’s Society of the Snow and HBO’s The Last of Us were the big winners at the 2024 Soc Awards.

Albert Finney, five-time Oscar-nominee and star of Tom Jones, has passed away. He was 82. According to his family, Finney "passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side." Finney died at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London of a chest infection. He had been diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2011.

Born in 1936, Albert Finney grew up in a lower-middle-class family and was the son of a bookmaker. Finney was eventually accepted to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he cut his teeth acting on the stage. Not long after, Finney transitioned into movies, with his first major role coming Tony Richardson's 1960 classic The Entertainer. Finney, that same year, also starred in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, directed by Karel Reisz, which proved to be his major breakout role. Albert Finney, the English actor who earned five Oscar nominations throughout his screen career, has died at age 82. Finney’s family confirmed the actor’s passing February 8 and told the Associated Press he “passed away peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side.” Finney was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2007.

Finney got his start in theater after graduating from England’s esteemed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and moved to film in 1960 with his feature debut in Tony Richardson’s “The Entertainer,” starring Laurence Olivier and Brenda de Banzie. Finney’s screen acting career spanned over five decades. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor four times: “Tom Jones” (1963), “Murder on the Orient Express” (1974), “The Dresser” (1983), and “Under the Volcano” (1984). Finney’s role opposite Julia Roberts in Steven Soderbergh’s “Eric Brockovich” earned him his first and only Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Oscar-nominated actor Albert Finney, one of the great British actors of his generation who made a worldwide name for himself in 1963’s Tom Jones and maintained a strong career through 2012’s Skyfall, died Thursday in London. He was 82.

The cause of death, according to The New York Times, was a chest infection. He died at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London Thursday afternoon. In 2011 Finney disclosed he was undergoing treatment for kidney cancer.

Among his Oscar-nominated performances were roles in Tom Jones, Murder on the Orient Express, The Dresser, Under the Volcano and Erin Brockovich.

Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Finney moved quickly into film, gaining immediate acclaim for his 1960 debut in Tony Richardson’s The Entertainer.
