Two-time Oscar winner Renée Zellweger will forever be known as rom-com royalty, from the Bridget Jones films to Jerry Maguire. However, she hasn't been afraid to wade into the waters of horror. Her roots in the genre stem all the way back to her first leading role in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, though arguably her most interesting spooky role would come 14 years later with the release of the star-studded supernatural thriller, Case 39. Directed by Christian Alvart, it paired Zellweger with a Bradley Cooper fresh off of The Hangover for a story centered on a seemingly sweet kid named Lilith (Jodelle Ferland) who proves to be much more than she lets on. Though it was widely panned by critics to the tune of a 22% Rotten Tomatoes score, Paramount+ subscribers will soon be able to let the twisted tale into their homes starting on August 1.

ParaNorman is returning to theaters this Halloween, newly remastered for RealD 3D and 2D formats, for a one-week engagement.
Laika’s 2012 stop-motion animated film will open on October 25 via Fathom Entertainment. It will also be released in international markets beginning October 23 from Trafalgar Releasing.
The film will be accompanied by a new, CG-animated short, ParaNorman: The Thrifting, starring Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”) and Anna Kendrick reprising her role of Norman’s older sister, Courtney Babcock.
The short is written by Chris Butler, who wrote and co-directed ParaNorman with Sam Fell, and directed by Laika lead character designer Thibault LeClercq.
“ParaNorman was a breakthrough film for Laika — emotionally rich, visually daring, and proudly weird in all the right ways,” said Laika Chief Marketing & Operations Officer David Burke. “Bringing it back to theaters in stunning remastered 3D, paired with a brand-new short film, is an invitation for audiences to rediscover the heart...

Critics didn't look favorably at Case 39 when it came out in 2009, calling it unoriginal and not very scary. It is easy to see why it was regarded as a letdown, considering it was an American debut by an up-and-coming German director, Christian Alvart, known for his gruesome and provocative first thriller, Antibodies (2005). Even though Case 39 doesn't reach the level of Alvart's spectacular debut, it still offers a solid, somber atmosphere and a few surprisingly captivating sequences (the one with hornets is particularly memorable). However, the film's true forte was its secretly genius casting, which brought together a young horror prodigy, Jodelle Ferland, a recent Oscar winner, Renée Zellweger, who was widely famous for her rom-com roles at the time, and Bradley Cooper, who hadn't had his big break yet. It might seem like these people shouldn't mix well in a horror setting — but they do, and the way...

Home Alone star Daniel Stern has revealed his scary encounter with a real spider on the film’s set. Stern memorably played one-half of the Wet Bandits with Joe Pesci in Home Alone.
The 1990 holiday classic’s climactic scenes memorably involves 8-year-old Kevin McCallister using home-made booby traps to foil the Wet Bandits breaking into his home. At one point, Stern’s character Marv shrieks in horror when a tarantula walks across his face while he’s recovering from being burned by a clothing iron. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Stern revealed that he was completely taken by surprise when it came time to film the spider encounter. “I was kind of in a groove at that point of doing crazy things, so when I showed up on the set to do the spider thing, I thought … 'Let's see what happens. The Japanese media landscape is flush with inspired content. With swathes of entertainment mediums to be heralded, one genre stands out in terms of variety. Japanese horror is unlike any other horror genre in the world of cinema. Many movies pose surrealist concepts and existential crises, offering distinctive experiences for all audiences. Though Japanese cinema has proved to be a standout among all other forms of media, it's no surprise that a variety of American films host inspiration from such otherworldly tales.
American horror can be somewhat flavorless in some regards. These days, there is a formula that works at the box office, and producers will typically lean towards tried and true narratives to ensure maximum profit. Whether it is a slasher, otherworldly horror or a plain over-the-top monster, stateside horror rarely leaves room for interpretation. WIth that being said, there are a number of American films that have borrowed or even re-imagined Japanese concepts.

“Burn anything you’re afraid of. Burn anything you can’t control.”
When we think of patriarchal systems of oppression, it’s usually men we find at the helm. The patriarchy itself is a model of societal control based on the heteronormative nuclear family. Its survival is dependent on men in positions of leadership bolstered by subservient women convinced to work against their own best interests. But the “fairer sex” is just as capable of orchestrating our own destruction. In fact, many women feed the patriarchy with a patented blend of religious fervor and fear-mongering wrapped in delicate grace and perpetual victimhood. Co-host Rocco Thompson may describe Christophe Gans’ Silent Hill as “Francis Bacon and Hieronymus Bosch having a fuckfest in Chernobyl,” but this slyly progressive film also reveals the dangers of blind allegiance to a matriarchy just as toxic as anything men could create.

Before Silent Hill became a horror film, it was a survival horror video game but what's even more horrifying still is that Silent Hill, West Virginia is based on a real place. The game utilizes a foggy atmosphere to inhibit the players vision while they control Harry Mason on the search for his missing adopted daughter. Its unforgettable landscape and horrific features spawned an entire franchise of films and video game sequels. While the horror video game is well-known, its true story and the actual location are rarely recognized. There's a real town the town of Centralia, known online as "The Real Silent Hill", Pennsylvania which inspired Silent Hill's aesthetic.

Prior to the immense success of television shows like "The Last of Us" and "Fallout," many audiences felt that video game adaptations were cursed. There were plenty of quick cash grabs and bizarre attempts at movie adaptations that just didn't work throughout the years, but one secret standout is the 2006 Christophe Gans film "Silent Hill." Based on the Konami video game series of the same name, "Silent Hill" follows a mother (Radha Mitchell) who goes into the uniquely haunted town of Silent Hill to try and rescue her adopted daughter, Heather (Jodelle Ferland). While the film isn't super accurate to the story from the games, it does capture the mood and some of the themes and completely nails the aesthetic, which can be half the battle with video game titles as visually recognizable as "Silent Hill." There's just nothing quite like its grungy industrial meat locker vibe and its delightfully disturbing monsters,...

The Twilight Saga may predominantly focus on Bella (Kristen Stewart) and the Cullen family, but the supporting characters really bring the story to life. There are many brilliant side characters that fans love, from the Volturi, to Charlie (Billy Burke). They may not always be around, but without them the story wouldn't be complete, and the same was true going into the third film of the saga, Eclipse. Eclipse serves as the epic conclusion to the Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) storyline, which has been ongoing since James (Cam Gigandet) was killed in the first film. She wants revenge on Bella and the Cullen family for killing her mate, and enlists Riley (Xavier Samuel) to create a newborn army that is designed and trained to attack the Cullen’s. The army is filled with thirsty, brutal newborns who are under the influence of Riley, and will stop at nothing to destroy...

From huggable dolls coming to life as voodoo-powered murderers to lovable St. Bernards becoming rabid monsters, there’s nothing more disturbing than the subversion of innocence. That’s why the horror genre is simply chock-full of creepy children. "All this gaming has prepared me to save my real life princess." Quiver has revealed an official trailer for a nerdy action comedy film titled Office Games, made by actor / director Christian de la Cortina. This is one of the most obvious Scott Pilgrim vs the World rip-offs so far, with gaming visuals added to the footage as a guy tries to rescue his true love. Or whatever. The only difference is it's set inside a gaming company's office, not on the streets of Toronto like Scott Pilgrim. When an obsessive gamer living in his parents' basement is forced to get a job, he embarks on the most epic quest of his life - to slay the corporate villains and save his princess. The film stars Evan Marsh, Jodelle Ferland, Darla Biccum, Christian de la Cortina, Eliot Ahdoot, Michael Mancini, with Daniel Stolfi and Mark Camacho. This all looks especially mediocre.

This review contains spoilers for The Order season 2.
The Order is one of those shows on Netflix that tends to escape notice due to scant publicity and an inability for word-of-mouth to adequately explain how good it is without sounding ridiculous talking about werewolves and secret magical organizations on a college campus. Fortunately, season 2 pivots away from its revenge plot for male protagonist Jack Morton and focuses on one of the most surprising successes of the first season: the Knights of St. Christopher. Despite the fact that the werewolves spent a few episodes regaining their memories and feeling sore about it, their eventual place as the Order’s enforcers was a central role they very much deserved.
At first it seemed like the acolyte handlers manipulating Jack, Randall, Hamish, and Lilith were misguided but harmless. Most fans didn’t love the memory wipe of the season one finale in the first place,...

For his tenth feature, Terry Gilliam adapted Mitch Cullin s celebrated cult novel Tideland, a work he once described as Alice in Wonderland meets Psycho through the eyes of Amélie.
To escape her unhappy life in a remote part of Texas, nine-year-old Jeliza-Rose dreams up an elaborate fantasy world. But the reality of having junkie parents played by Jeff Bridges (The Big Lebowski) and Jennifer Tilly (Bound) and the influence of her eccentric neighbours begins to encroach, turning her daydreams ever darker.
A rich slice of Southern Gothic blurring whimsical fantasy with unsettling reality, Tideland is among Gilliam’s most personal works indeed, with its shifts between the amusing and the macabre, expressive camerawork and striking special effects, the film could be the very definition of Gilliamesque!

Whether you’re an avid cinephile or a hardcore gamer, it’s safe to say that the adaptation of video games to movies has been a somewhat tumultuous affair (that’s probably putting it lightly). Though modern game narratives have seen a huge uptick in both quality and quantity, translating the interactive medium to the big screen has been upsettingly more miss, than hit.
Still, there have been a few attempts that have bravely run the gauntlet and grossed respectable box office earnings, without invoking the wrath of the diehard fanbase the source material is based upon. Christophe Gans’ Silent Hill is one such movie. And you know what? It’s actually one of the best, and one of the most accurate, video game to movie adaptations yet.
Granted, those may not be the highest bars out there — for the time being, anyway — but nevertheless, there’s a surprising amount...

Truth be told, it’s not very often that I get into a summer series. After intensely following scripted dramas throughout the other seasons of the year – be they for work or pleasure – I just feel like taking a break for a few months to enjoy other things, and maybe you can relate. Plus, you have to admit that having dozens of reality shows populating the airwaves for that time doesn’t make channel surfing all that enticing.
So, when a show called Dark Matter came around two years ago, I took a chance and found myself to be pleasantly surprised. And although it featured a half dozen people cruising around space in a ship, it quickly became apparent to me that this genre-bender was more than just another Star Trek clone.

When a house's mailbox has the devious digits "666" scrawled on its side, you may want to approach it with caution, because you never know who might sneak up behind you, as evidenced in our exclusive clip from The Unspoken, now out in select theaters and on Digital HD, just in time for Halloween.
"From the Executive Producer of Paranormal Activity and Insidious comes The Unspoken, starring Neal McDonough (Suits, Arrow) and Jodelle Ferland (Silent Hill). Directed by Award-winning filmmaker Sheldon Wilson (Kaw, Shallow Ground), The Unspoken is an eerie thrill ride into the horror that lurks in an unsuspecting small town.
In 1997 the close-knit Anderson family vanished from their country home without a trace without an explanation. No bodies were ever found and for 17 years the house has remained undisturbed...until now. A sinister tale of haunting and murder, The Unspoken is a refreshing twist on the horror genre just in time for Halloween.

When it comes to horror we get used to certain tropes appearing in the films. These are often accepted and taken in the fun of the horror experience, as long as the film manages to deliver the expected level of entertainment. The Unspoken is a film where you’ll find many tropes at work, but does it deliver?
After a night in 1997 when a family mysteriously vanished from their home, the house is left vacant for 17 years. When a new family move in, Angela (Jodelle Ferland) agrees to help look after their child. Now undisturbed though the house appears to be coming back to life, and has a keen interest in Angela herself.

Jump scares aplenty haunt The Unspoken, a movie that is populated by menacing men and weak-willed women. Rather confusingly, it's set in the modern day. A period setting might have explained better the brutish bullies and fearful females who fill out the main cast. In any event, after a prelude that is meant to establish the reason why a small town in upstate New York is still frightened of an isolated house located beyond its outskirts some 17 years later, Angela (Jodelle Ferland) is introduced. Angela's father (Lochlyn Munro) has been laid off for months and his job prospects do not look good. As the only child of a single parent, Angela realizes she needs to help out and so agrees to meet Mrs. Peterson...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
In one of the busier weekends of the month, two of the movies did better than I predicted and two did worse. The real winner of the weekend was Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, which did far better than anyone thought with an opening weekend of $28.5 million in just 2,260 theaters or $12,611 per theater. It ended up completely demolishing Tom Cruise’s action sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which opened in almost 1,500 more theaters, but at least that ended up around where I predicted with $22.9 million. Ouija: Origin of Evil came out slightly below my prediction to take third place with $14 million, while the Fox comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses bombed even worse than I expected with $5.5 million in 3,000 theaters.

There are only so many iterations of the haunted house trope and yet they continue getting made. Sometimes we’re lucky with James Wan’s The Conjuring series delivering fear along with period aesthetic and tense mood, but those are few and far between. More often we receive work trying hard to stand out from the pack that prove less than inspired with the past decade or so seeing an uptick in violence and gore to make up for any redundancies in themes. To that end I commend regular genre TV movie director Sheldon Wilson for showing restraint on The Unspoken. Atmosphere is paramount as it should be, but sadly it’s created almost solely from jump scares the prologue quickly numbs us towards as soon as things get going.

If you're looking for a good-looking horror movie to watch this Halloween, The Unspoken looks like a great option! The first trailer for the film was released, and it actually looks like it could be a ghost story type thriller, especially if you like those kinds of horror films that deal with haunted children.
The movie doesn't have much star power. The most notable actor in the film in Neal McDonough (Captain America, Minority Report). The movie also stars Jodelle Ferland as a young babysitter who is hired to take care of a nine-year-old boy whose father was killed in the house they're still living in. "Let me introduce you to Adrian... Just so you know, Adrian isn't your typical nine-year-old..." Paladin has released a trailer for a supernatural horror thriller titled The Unspoken, from director Sheldon Wilson. Jodelle Ferland stars as a young babysitter of a nine-year-old boy whose father was killed years earlier in the same house their still living in. Obviously things start to get scary. The cast includes Sunny Suljic as Adrian, plus Neal McDonough, Pascale Hutton, Matt Bellefleur, Rukiya Bernard and others. This looks like yet another typical evil-child horror movie, similar to The Omen or The Bad Seed or Joshua or Orphan. There's plenty of them already, and this one just doesn't look like it has anything different to offer. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Sheldon Wilson's The Unspoken, direct from YouTube: "The root of all evil awaits." In 1997 the Anderson family vanished from their home without a trace.
