Father: Mário Nuno do Canto Lopes da Costa. Mother: Maria Helena Botelho da Costa Marques Esparteiro.

Has two older siblings, Nuno José and Amélia Maria, and two younger siblings, Maria Teresa and Joaquim Manuel.

His maternal grandfather, Joaquim Marques Esparteiro, was the 100th Governor of Macau.

He and his ex-wife Filipa Trigo are parents of a son and a daughter: Guilherme Lopes da Costa and Constança Esparteiro.

Luís worked in at least 11 theater plays: "Três é uma multidão", "Elefante no Jardim", and "Um fantasma chamado Isabel".

He and his second wife Vanda Correia are parents of a daughter named Teresa Correia Esparteiro Lopes da Costa (b. São Jorge de Arroios, Lisbon, 4 November 2001) and a son named Luís Correia Esparteiro Lopes da Costa (b. Santa Maria dos Olivais, Lisbon, 3 August 2005).

His mother died on 24 March 2013 at the age of 84, and his father died on the same month on 31 at the age of 91.
