‘The Expanse’ Could Be Leaving Prime Video Soon
Image
One of the best science fiction series of modern times is sadly gearing up to leave Prime Video. Beginning back in 2015, The Expanse, which started life on SyFy before being picked up for more seasons on Amazon, is now listed among the streaming platform’s "Titles expiring in the next 30 days.” Meaning that fans and newcomers only have a short time to catch up on this show, which boasts a score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Created by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby for the Syfy network initially before being canceled and picked up by Amazon, The Expanse is based on the series of novels of the same name by James S. A. Corey. The title is apt, as the series explores an expansive world set in the far-flung future, in which humans have colonized the solar system. Featuring a large ensemble of characters, The Expanse tackles the political machinations of...

Accused Season 2, Episode 6 Review: Cobie Smulders' Story Undone By Its End
Image
The following contains major spoilers from Accused Season 2, Episode 6, "Val's Story," which debuted Tuesday, Nov. 26 on Fox. It also contains discussion of abuse.

Accused Season 2, Episode 6, "Val's Story" takes the risk of upending the show's formula, and for that it should be applauded. What makes the Fox series great is its ability to think and act outside the box. However, the risk doesn't pay off for writer-director Maile Meloy. One of the most well-cast episodes of the show falls apart because of the writing in its final act.

"Val's Story" centers on Valentina Pearce (played by Marvel Cinematic Universe star Cobie Smulders), a struggling single mother desperate and envious of her ex-husband's seemingly idyllic relationship with his new wife. But when Val sneaks into their home and finds Trey dead on the garage floor, she finds herself facing murder charges. The episode has a wonderful group of actors at its...

Star Trek Has Forgotten Its Infamous Pleasure Planet
Image
Risa has been forgotten in modern Star Trek, with only brief mentions in newer shows. The franchise's ability to expand Risa's story is being sidelined, missing out on its potential. Modern technology like the Ar wall could help bring Risa to life like never before.

Despite its immense potential, the Star Trek franchise seems to have forgotten about its most infamous pleasure planet. Although Star Trek is mainly about space exploration and scientific discovery, all Star Trek TV shows have had an episode where the crew is allowed to blow off steam, and no shore leave planet has become more famous in the franchise than Risa. First introduced in the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3 episode, "Captain's Holiday," Risa has become synonymous with vacation and tourism, although it was only included in a handful of episodes across multiple series.

Over about four episodes, Tng and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine...

Star Trek: Discovery All 5 Seasons Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for the Star Trek: Discovery series finale, "Life, Itself"

Each season of Star Trek: Discovery had highs and lows, with season 2 being the most cohesive and well-executed. Season 3 made a bold move by shifting to the 32nd century, setting the stage for new characters and storylines. Although season 5 had some missteps and wasn't meant to be the finale, it delivered impressive storytelling and a moving end.

With the conclusion of Star Trek: Discovery's fifth and final season, a clear quality ranking of all the show's seasons emerges. Discovery was the first Star Trek TV show to air on Paramount+ starting in 2017, and has accomplished a lot for the franchise in the seven years it has been on the air. As the first modern Star Trek series since the end of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005, Discovery began a new era for the franchise, making it possible for...

Star Treks Next Series Must Explain Discoverys Spore Drive Replacement
Image
Star Trek: Discovery introduces the pathway drive as a new propulsion system to replace the spore drive. Captain Burnham and crew are close to obtaining powerful Progenitors' technology. Lt. Sylvia Tilly is the perfect character to explain the pathway drive in the new spin-off series.

Star Trek: Discovery has introduced the pathway drive as a propulsion system to replace the USS Discovery's spore drive, but Star Trek's next show will have to explain how the new technology works. As Discovery season 5 comes to a close, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew are close to acquiring the powerful technology of the Progenitors. Burnham and her friends have outsmarted the Breen before, but Moll (Eve Harlow) remains a force to be reckoned with. As the Progenitors were the supposed creators of all humanoid life, their technology should contain the power of creation itself.

Voyager Is Why Star Trek Is Replacing Discovery’s Spore Drive
Image
Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 1, "Red Directive"

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 bids farewell to the spore drive, as USS Voyager's pathway drive takes over in the 32nd century. Commander Stamets reveals Starfleet's decision to halt spore drive development, making Discovery unique in the Star Trek franchise. The USS Voyager-j's pathway drive paves the way for safer and sustainable warp travel in Star Trek's future.

The 32nd century's version of the USS Voyager is the reason that Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is abandoning Starfleet's revolutionary spore drive technology. Since they arrived in the 32nd century in season 3, the USS Discovery crew's one-of-a-kind spore drive has represented a potential replacement for dilithium-reliant warp travel in Star Trek's future. However, various obstacles, most notably rogue Risan scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) and his theft of the only working prototype have prevented the spore drive from being rolled out.

Star Trek Is Ditching Discovery's Spore Drive - And That's Good!
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episodes 1 & 2!

Starfleet's decision to abandon the spore drive in Discovery season 5 is a smart move for the future of the franchise. The spore drive's ability to instantly transport the USS Discovery can hinder dramatic tension and urgency in storytelling. The new pathway drive technology will likely power the adventures in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, replacing the spore drive.

Star Trek: Discovery has revealed that Starfleet is ditching the groundbreaking spore drive, which is a good thing for the future of the franchise's 32nd century timeline. The USS Discovery's spore drive was an experimental technology from the 2200s that became invaluable in Star Trek's dilithium-starved 32nd century. Pioneered by Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and his research partner, Straal (Saad Siddiqui), the spore drive was a way to navigate a subspace mycelium network of fungal roots that spanned the entire universe.

Star Trek Discovery Season 5 Will Make a Long-Awaited Change to Its Story
Image
When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”

Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. Initially developed by Bryan Fuller, who wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to make fan-favorite shows such as Hannibal and American Gods, Discovery ultimately premiered with Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts as showrunners. By the end of season two, both had left the show, with Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise stepping in as showrunners to right the ship.

But for some Star Trek fans, the problems with Discovery go beyond a troubled production. Initially presented as the adventures of Spock...

10 Short Final Seasons Of TV Shows That Actually Worked Out Great
Image
Short final seasons can be successful despite fewer episodes, as seen in The Expanse and Arrow. These shorter seasons still manage to wrap up character storylines and provide satisfying conclusions. Shows like Superstore and New Girl prove that a shorter episode span can work better in certain instances, allowing for new and old storylines to reach a natural conclusion.

While it's not unusual to see a TV show with a short final season, there have been some instances where this has worked in a show's favor. A shorter season of a show can happen for several reasons, such as production issues, the show being canceled, or a writer's strike. Despite having fewer episodes than usual, this doesn't mean that a show cannot still have a successful season.

There are plenty of examples as to why a shorter final season doesn't work. This is usually attributed to a lack of time...

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5’s New Preview Already Answers A Big Season 4 Finale Question
Image
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 sees Burnham and Booker working together again, their past mistakes seemingly forgiven. The final season will feature a galactic treasure hunt and explore the romantic relationships of three couples, including Burnham and Book. Discovery's longest-lasting couple, Culber and Stamets, and Saru's romance with T'Rina will also be wrapped up in the upcoming season.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 already answers a big question left after the season 4 finale. Discovery season 4 followed Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery as they investigated the destructive Dark Matter Anomaly, or Dma. Discovery season 4 also added new complications to the romance between Michael Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala). Because Book's home planet of Kwejian was destroyed by the Dma, he wanted to destroy the anomaly, while Burnham and other Federation representatives wanted to contact Species 10-c, who created the Dma.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5: Renewal, Release Date, Cast, & Everything We Know

Paramount+'s flagship Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery, will be back for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, and here's everything we know about when Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery will return. Star Trek: Discovery is one of five new Star Trek series streaming on Paramount+, along with Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy. Star Trek: Discovery season 4 broke its own mold by focusing less on action, instead tackling the Dark Matter Anomaly — a season-long threat that led Burnham and the USS Discovery into a brand-new galaxy. Star Trek's Multiverse Can't End With Discovery
Image
Star Trek: Discovery season 4 officially confirmed that the Multiverse exists, but with Discovery coming to a close, the Star Trek franchise cannot forget about the Multiverse. Star Trek: Discovery premiered in 2017, and the show's popularity facilitated the largest expansion of the franchise since the end of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005. Discovery allowed for the creation of several other Star Trek projects, including its spin-off series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In March 2023, however, it was announced that Discovery's upcoming fifth season would be its last.

During its time on the air, Star Trek: Discovery added to and expanded upon the franchise in some significant ways. One of these was the official confirmation of the Star Trek Multiverse in season 4. The idea of a Multiverse had been explored in previous projects with concepts like the Mirror Universe and the creation of the Kelvin Timeline in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (2009), but...

Season 5 Is The Last Chance To Fix Discovery's Flaws
Image
Star Trek: Discovery is coming to a surprise end with the upcoming season 5, and time is running out to address some of its long-lingering flaws. Discovery relaunched Star Trek on television in 2017 after a long hiatus, focusing on the disgraced Starfleet mutineer Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her journey from outcast to Captain of the USS Discovery. Despite some high-profile growing pains, Discovery's success paved the way for the rapid expansion of Paramount+'s Star Trek Universe.

Since its earliest days, Star Trek: Discovery has been one of the most polarizing series in the history of the franchise. Some of that criticism has been deeply unfair, like the show's efforts to earnestly represent the LGBTQ+ community onscreen and the decision to center the show on a morally complex Black female lead in Captain Burnham. That said, there are plenty of warranted criticisms of the show as well, and with only one season remaining,...

Every Star Trek: Discovery Villain Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Star Trek: Discovery has featured some compelling antagonists over its first four seasons, as well as its fair share of villainous misfires. Originally set a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series, Discovery has been one of the more controversial entries in the Star Trek franchise. Discovery season 1 was notoriously shaky, as it leaned into a dark, violent tone and featured plenty of technological anachronisms. The show found its footing in the much-improved season 2, and boldly reset its premise when the titular vessel traveled to the 32nd century for season 3 and beyond.

Discovery has never been particularly defined by its villains, as most of its focus has been on its Starfleet crew like Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the Kelpien officer Saru (Doug Jones). That's not to say Discovery hasn't had some great villain turns, particularly early on when the show was still struggling to find an identity.

Discovery's Spore Drive Is Better Than Star Trek's Traditional Warp
Image
With Star Trek: Discovery poised to enter season 5, the USS Discovery's spore drive has proven to be better than the traditional warp technology used by Starfleet. Discovery remains the only 32nd-century starship with a spore drive; although it was damaged during the mission Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led to make First Contact with Species 10-c in another galaxy, the spore drive was eventually repaired. The onus now is on the United Federation of Planets to develop and equip Starfleet with next-generation spore drives after the death of Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle).

The displacement-activated spore hub drive was a breakthrough technology introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 1. By traveling along the mycelial network, the USS Discovery instantly jumps to a location, bypassing the travel time necessitated by traditional warp technology. The spore drive would have been more easily embraced had Star Trek: Discovery not been a prequel set in...

Discovery's David Ajala Discusses Whether Book Will Join Starfleet In Season 5
Image
David Ajala gives his thoughts on whether Cleveland Booker will join Starfleet in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. After the Dark Matter Anomaly destroyed his homeworld of Kwejian, Book went rogue in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. Booker teamed up with mad scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) to destroy the Dma and its creators, Species 10-c, until Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery stopped them.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant to promote the home video release of Star Trek: Discovery season 4, David Ajala discussed the potential for Cleveland Booker to join Starfleet. Even after the consequences of his actions in season 4, Book remains romantically linked to Discovery's Captain Burnham. Here's what Ajala had to say about whether Booker could still become part of Starfleet:

David Ajala: Cleveland Booker is a man of the people... Whether or not it may be advantageous for Cleveland Booker to join Starfleet,...

David Ajala Reflects On Book's Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Journey
Image
Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) went on a quest for vengeance in Star Trek: Discovery season 4. The Paramount+ original series is now available in a four-disc collection from CBS Home Entertainment. Star Trek: Discovery season 4 can be brought home on DVD, Blu-Ray, Limited Edition Blu-Ray Steelbook, and Digital, packed with over 90 minutes of special features, including exclusive cast and crew interviews, a gag reel, deleted scenes, and episode commentary,

In Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led the USS Discovery against a planet-killing threat called the Dark Matter Anomaly. To learn the source behind the Dma, Discovery went to where no one has gone before and journeyed to another galaxy. But Burnham also had to stop her lover, Book, whose home planet Kwejian was destroyed by the Dma. Book teamed up with mad scientist Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) to destroy the Dma's creators, Species 10-c, which put the entire galaxy at risk.

Discovery Became More Like Tng Than You Think
Image
In season 4, Star Trek: Discovery subtly became more and more like Star Trek: The Next Generation. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery faced a threat to the entire galaxy that required their starship to cross the Galactic Barrier into a new galaxy to make contact with Species 10-c. But all throughout, Discovery's crew was processing trauma and their dynamics gradually began to resemble the crew of the USS Enterprise-d in Tng.

When Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek: The Next Generation, he had a utopian vision of the 24th century and decreed that there would be "no conflict" among the Starfleet Officers on the Enterprise. This rule caused issues with the writing staff, who had to figure out a way to fashion drama when the main characters of the show didn't argue and always got along. The solution Tng's creative team came up with was for conflict...

Star Trek: Discovery Still Hasn't Had A Better Villain Than Lorca
Image
Star Trek: Discovery still hasn't topped its best villain, season 1's Captain Gabriel Lorca. The show took a lot of chances when it debuted on CBS All Access in 2017, from unwelcome changes to the Klingons to its serialized narrative structure. Plus, viewers had to wait until Star Trek: Discovery's third episode to see the titular starship and meet its captain.

Star Trek: Discovery bucked tradition by making its captain one of the main villains, but it paid off with Gabriel Lorca. Jason Isaacs's performance in his earlier episodes really sold the character's assumed identity as a flawed yet engaging hero. Then Lorca's unmasking in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, episode 12, "Vaulting Ambition," as the Mirror Universe counterpart to the real, missing Federation captain was a high point of the first season. The audacity and ambition of the Mirror Universe Lorca's long con, and his near-success achieving it, made him a great villain.

Every Change That Happened Between Star Trek: Discovery Seasons 3 & 4
Image
A great deal happened between Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3 and 4 that changed the face of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets. Star Trek: Discovery will return with season 5, which promises a tonal shift for the serialized series taking place in the distant 32nd century. In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) will embark on a hunt for the "greatest treasure in the galaxy," which could showcase a 32nd-century era that has markedly changed in the scant few years since Burnham permanently time-traveled from the mid-23nd century.

Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery solved the mystery of The Burn in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. They discovered the source of the galactic calamity that wiped out all dilithium and warp travel was a Kelpien named Su'Kal (Bill Irwin) who was orphaned in a nebula imbued with dilithium. A hundred years after The Burn, the United Federation of Planets collapsed,...

Discovery’s Burnham Always Breaks 1 Big Star Trek Captain Rule
Image
Starfleet has a rule that starship captains can't be emotionally compromised, but Star Trek: Discovery's Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) breaks it constantly and gets away with it. This rule, Regulation 619, states that a commanding officer is required to relieve themselves of command if their current mission left them emotionally compromised and unable to make rational decisions. Regulation 619 has been evident throughout the various Star Trek TV series and movies, but it was most dramatically implemented in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009.

James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) became Acting Captain of the USS Enterprise when he coerced Spock (Zachary Quinto) into violently demonstrating he was emotionally compromised by the destruction of Vulcan. However, Star Trek: Discovery's Captain Burnham, maintains command of the USS Discovery-a even when she is emotionally compromised, which happens often. This was never more evident than in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 when Burnham was at odds with her lover,...

After 57 Years, Starfleet Can Finally Quit Warp Travel In Discovery Season 5
Image
After 57 years of Star Trek's starships traveling by warp, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 could make a fundamental change to Starfleet. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery-a gave warp travel back to the galaxy by solving the mystery of The Burn in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Yet the Discovery remained the only ship in Starfleet with a displacement-activated spore hub drive in season 4. However, Starfleet may be poised to follow the Discovery's lead in season 5.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 could finally equip every ship in Starfleet with its own spore drive. Being able to instantaneously jump to a new location by traveling along the mycelial network was Star Trek: Discovery's Big Idea that made it unique, but the spore drive was also problematic with canon because it was invented in the 23rd-century era, pre-Star Trek: The Original Series. 980+ years later, the Federation is still reliant on dilithium crystal-powered warp drive.

Discovery Season 5 Ignoring Star Trek’s Multiverse Would Be A Mistake
Image
Now that the Multiverse has been confirmed by Star Trek: Discovery, season 5 shouldn't ignore one of the biggest ideas in the franchise. During the mission to stop the Dark Matter Anomaly, which came from its creators, Species 10-c, in another galaxy, Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) revealed that he's from a different reality in the Multiverse. Therefore, Star Trek: Discovery established the existence of even more alternate timelines beyond the Mirror Universe and the Kelvin timeline from J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 teases a welcome shift in tone from the dire galactic threats that Discovery seasons 3 and 4 revolved around, but beyond the season's main story is the greater idea of the Multiverse and its ramifications. Star Trek: Discovery season 3 established the Temporal Wars happened a couple of hundred years before Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) arrived in the 32nd century, and the Temporal Wars also led...

Discovery Season 5 Needs To Fix Star Trek's Species 10-c Plot Hole
Image
When Star Trek: Discovery returns for season 5, it has to fix the one glaring flaw from the season 4 finale. The USS Discovery boldly went where no one has gone before at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 4 when Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her starship through the Galactic Barrier into another galaxy. Burnham and representatives from the United Federation of Planets made First Contact with Species 10-c, the creators of the Dark Matter Anomaly that threatened Earth and the Alpha Quadrant.

Captain Burnham and the Discovery's First Contact with the massive and thoroughly alien Species 10-c was an awe-inspiring moment except for one big problem: No one from the Federation's diplomatic team remembered to ask Species 10-c what their race calls themselves. The Federation gave the extra-galactic aliens the (rather uninspired) designation Species 10-c during their investigation into the origins of the Dma. After Discovery entered the neighboring galaxy,...

Shawn Doyle in Hitman Action Thriller 'The Last Mark' Official Trailer
Reem Morsi
"Forget about the girl! Get out of here." Epic Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie hitman action movie titled The Last Mark, yet another movie repeating pretty much the same plot of a hitman who has to do one last job before he retires. But he can't take out this person because it's a woman. Oh how original. This film opens on VOD at the beginning of March if anyone wants to watch. After a young woman witnesses a mob hit, a seasoned assassin and his psychotic partner must track her down before she turns them in, but she proves to be the hardest mark to kill. The Last Mark is directed by Reem Morsi and stars Alexia Fast, Shawn Doyle, Bryce Hodgson, Josh Cruddas, and Jonas Chernick. There's not much to see here, it doesn't look any good. The poster is the best part about this release,...

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Debates Next Steps With the Anomaly — Who Goes Rogue? (Recap)
Image
[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 7 “…But to Connect.”] The Dma (Dark Matter Anomaly) is a threat to everyone, and therefore representatives from across the galaxy gather in the midseason finale of Star Trek: Discovery to determine how to deal with it. But with the choices boiling down to a peaceful approach to those responsible and a forceful attack, one that could have unknown ramifications, there’s a clear division, one that leads to a dramatic decision. From the beginning of the episode, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Book (David Ajala) aren’t on the same page; she’s fine waiting for coordinates of the Dma creators’ location by trying to win over Grudge with a holographic cat toy, while he’d rather keep checking in with Stamets (Anthony Rapp) for an update. Later, at the meeting, the two options are presented, with Tarka (Shawn Doyle) proposing the more aggressive...

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 5 Easter Eggs & References
Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 5.

Following in the footsteps of Season 3, the first batch of episodes in Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 do two things: The overall story of the season-long arc is explored, but, the episode itself presents a standalone story in the classic Star Trek tradition. Last week, Tilly got her “Galileo Seven” moment, but this week, in “The Examples,” Disco tackles a classic Trek ethical dilemma.

As Burnham and Book navigate the morality of saving prisoners on a doomed colony, “The Examples” front-loads the episode with a ton of callbacks and Easter eggs to the rest of the franchise. Here’s every Easter egg and big reference we spotted in Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 5…

USS Janeway

Right away, the episode hits us with a few starship names that sound familiar. The first is the USS Janeway, an obvious reference to Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager,...
