'Lego: Star Wars' Sequel Series Casts Dan Stevens as Solitus
Image
The galaxy far, far away has just gained another shining star in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire favorite Dan Stevens. He has joined the cast of Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past to voice the mysterious new villain, Master Solitus, a fallen Jedi who will become a major threat in the CG-animated sequel series when it returns for its second season on Disney+ on Sept. 19, 2025 — building (excuse the pun) on the story that first began in 2024 with Rebuild the Galaxy, the first chapter of the four-part miniseries.

A new poster for Pieces of the Past was revealed alongside the casting news, featuring a first look at Solitus. The artwork (shared below) positions the hooded and elusive character front and center, standing atop a mountain of Lego bricks, with his glaring red eyes illuminated by the two chained purple lightsabers he wields. The big bad...

Zach Cregger’s Weapons Reveals Eerie First Teaser Image As Mysterious Movie Tie-In Website Launches
Image
Somehow, it's been over two years now since Zach Cregger first announced Weapons, the filmmaker's hotly anticipated follow-up to surprise AirBnB horror smash Barbarian. Enigmatically described as a "multi and inter-related story horror epic" in the vein of Magnolia, details on Cregger's latest — whose starry cast includes Josh Brolin, Julia Gardner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Austin Abrams — have been largely kept under lock and key. But now, with the movie set to release in just four months, Warner Bros. are starting to kick Weapons' marketing campaign into gear, beginning with a teaser image and... an in-universe tie-in website. Yes, really!

A digital alarm clock reading 2:17am — as pictured above — may not seem especially significant on first glance. Creepy, sure, but not massively noteworthy. But then if you head over to maybrookmissing.net, where a landing page headline ominously reads '17 Local Children Leave Home Simultaneously at 2:17Am',...

GLAAD Media Awards 2025 Nominations Revealed - 'Emilia Perez' Overlooked, 'Wicked' & Others Nominated
Image
The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.

The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”

On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.

The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

New to Streaming: Anora, Small Things Like These, Juror #2, Cuckoo & More
Image
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Anora (Sean Baker)

Sean Baker’s Anora expands his filmmaking vision, pushing the writer-director-editor’s fifth consecutive story on sex workers into a higher plane of awards and commercial success. It’s a romantic comedy, a madcap dash around New York City, a movie ruminating on loss, love, and class disparity. Baker aims to put audiences through a ringer of emotional swings, ending with a desolation that’s been building in the background, easier to spot once the tinsel’s shimmer fades. With a true star-making performance from Mikey Madison and a deep bench of supporting actors, Anora whirls until suddenly it doesn’t, and all that’s left is earned, resonant silence from both its characters and audience. – Michael F.

The 12 Best Movie Trailers Of 2024
Image
Ah, movie trailers. Are they still a unique medium unto themselves that are enjoyable to watch on their own? While the function and ethos of the trailer is the same as it ever was — to provide a first look at upcoming cinema releases, and sell the public on them by trying to promote their tone/premise/cast/etc. — there's no question that they've changed over the years from being endearingly idiosyncratic to being almost completely homogenous. After all, who isn't sick of hearing a slowed-down remix or cover version of a pop song stretched out over three minutes, intermittently broken up by dead air for punchy lines of dialogue and/or orchestra stings?

Trends in trailers have always been a thing, from the "cast of thousands" overselling of the 1930s and '40s to the "in a world..." Don Lafontaine '90s era to the "Bwaaam"-ified post-"Inception" period of the '10s,...

Cuckoo Ending Explained
Image
2024's Cuckoo is an unsettling and effective horror film that builds to a surprisingly bloody and emotionally resonant finale. Direct by Tilman Singer, Cuckoo focuses on Hunter Schafer's Gretchen, an average teenager forced to spend the summer with their estranged father, his wife, and her half-sibling Alma. Relocating to a remote resort in the German Alps, the scenic setting is given a sense of mysterious menace thanks to Dr. Köning and his polite but forceful control of the resort. However, mysteries surrounding the resort steadily unravel and endanger Gretchen, especially after she encounters a monstrous Woman with Red Eyes.

By the end of the film, Cuckoo has teased out the connection between Alma and the mysterious woman, as well as why Köning has been working so hard to keep the resort's secrets hidden from the rest of the world. However, there are enough lingering threads that a prospective sequel...

Where To Watch Cuckoo: Showtimes & Streaming Status
Image
Film studio Neon's presence in the horror genre expands with Hunter Schafer's thriller, and there are a lot of factors when it comes to figuring out where to watch Cuckoo. After her breakout role in Euphoria, Schafer became a rising star attached to many projects in various-sized roles. Cuckoo is a major turning point for her as it marks her first leading role in a movie after smaller roles in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Kinds of Kindness. It is her presence as the lead that made Neon's 2024 horror movie one of the most exciting.

Schafer is joined by Jessica Henwick and Dan Stevens in Cuckoo, giving the small horror movie a rather great collection of talent in front of the camera. With the intrigue provided by Cuckoo's trailers and the box office success of Longlegs, Neon's bet to give the...

The Ritual features a leading cast including Al Pacino, Dan Stevens, Ashley Greene, Patricia Heaton, and Abigail Cowen.

XYZ Films has now revealed the poster for The Ritual. The grainy poster shows a look at the possessed woman in question, screaming. ‘Cuckoo’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Hunter Schafer, Jan Bluthardt, Marton Csokas, Jessica Henwick, Dan Stevens | Written and Directed by Tilman Singer

Gretchen (Hunter Schafer) is 17, and reluctantly leaving America for the German Alps to live with her estranged father. While there, she experiences overwhelming gory visions and is constantly haunted by strange noises. To her surprise, it’s a condition that runs in her family… and it’s only just getting started.

If you were making a horror movie, there are likely two ways you’d approach doing so. The first option is to create a slick, detailed plot that is so streamlined it is absolutely foolproof — take Longlegs, for example — or you archaically throw different things at the metaphorical wall to see what sticks. Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo sits in the second category… and like any beautiful mess, some things pay off, while others don’t.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

Blink Twice (Zoë Kravitz)

Over a close-up of a turtle, ominous sound design builds at such a deep frequency that the walls of a press-screening room in Beverly Hills began rattling. Once the shaking stopped and it’s realized this was not the third Los Angeles earthquake in as many weeks, the setup of Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut Blink Twice is doled out in impressively economical fashion: Rent is due for Frida (Naomie Ackie) and Jess (Alia Shawkat). Rather than pay up and keep the wheels spinning in their going-nowhere-fast lives, Frida has a plan: retrieving a hidden wad of bills, she purchases gowns so she and Jess can crash a fancy gala after their waitress shifts end. Strange Darling Review
Image
Plot: Nothing is what it seems when a twisted one-night stand spirals into a serial killer’s vicious murder spree.

Review: I feel like I often say: stay away from spoilers for this movie for the most pure experience. And that’s very true with films like Cuckoo and Longlegs relying on the mystery for their narrative to succeed. Yet I’d say there’s no film more deserving of this “going in blind” approach than Strange Darling. I question what I’ll even be able to talk about but it would be a disservice to any potential viewer to not let them go on the same journey that I did. Because Strange Darling is one of the most unique and riveting films of the year. And it deserves to be experienced completely fresh.

Presented in six chapters and out of sequential order, the narrative is delivered in a very unique way.

Cuckoo
Image
Across 2024, Dan Stevens has been delivering performances that are increasingly… well, cuckoo. Whether dishing up gleefully gory carnage (and withering onion-based put-downs) in Abigail, or replacing kaiju canines as monster-dentist Trapper in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the former Downton heartthrob is in full embrace of the weird and wonderful. Offbeat horror Cuckoo continues that streak admirably. Here, he plays the seriously shifty Herr König, owner of a Bavarian holiday resort that simply emanates bad vibes. Whether menacingly invading people’s personal space (“Guten Tag!”), menacingly sniffing asparagus, or menacingly trilling a little wooden flute, it’s a delight to see Stevens in such playfully bonkers territory.

Except it’s only Hunter Schafer’s Gretchen who seems to clock how seriously off König is. In fact, the whole resort is odd. Guests keep throwing up. A weird signal is emitting from the nearby woods. A mysterious figure runs around in the dead of night.

Neon has picked up U.S. rights to Hell of a Summer, the horror comedy written and directed by Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Billy Bryk (When You Finish Saving the World) in their feature debut, from 30West. A release date has not yet been disclosed.

Starring Wolfhard, Bryk and Fred Hechinger (Gladiator 2), the film fully financed and exec produced by 30West follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.

Hell of a Summer was produced by Wolfhard, Bryk, Hechinger, Aggregate Films’ Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman, Drew Brennan, and Parts & Labor’s Jay Van Hoy. In her review of the film out of last year’s Toronto Film Festival,...

Box-Office Weekend: Alien Assumes the Throne
Image
After three weeks atop the box-office weekend top ten, Deadpool & Wolverine was unseated by newcomer Alien: Romulus by $12.5 million.

In its first weekend of release, the horror film Alien: Romulus took control fo the weekend box office with an opening of $41.5 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Meanwhile, that studio’s second film in the top ten, Deadpool & Wolverine dropped to second place with $29.0 million after three weeks in the top spot. This gives the Walt Disney Studios Motion pictures product a four-week total of $545.8 million (so there probably isn’t too much sadness involved in giving up lead to another in-studio film). Also falling a spot was It Ends with Us which dropped to third place where it took in $24.0 million for Universal Pictures, bringing its two-week total to $97.8 million. Twisters also lost ground, finishing in fourth place where it added $9.8 million for Universal Pictures to...

Written and directed by Perkins, Longlegs centers on Lee Harker (Monroe), an FBI Agent in pursuit of a serial killer, who uncovers a series of occult clues that she must solve to end his terrifying killing spree.

Hunter Schafer has finally landed a leading role in the horror film Cuckoo, showcasing her depth and talent as an actor. Cuckoo allows Schafer to demonstrate a new side as a performer, flexing her range in a horror setting. Hopefully, Cuckoo is just the beginning of Schafer's movie star career, leading to more diverse roles.

Ive been waiting for Hunter Schafer to get the leading roles she deserves since her breakout on Euphoria five years ago, and its finally happening with her starring turn in the acclaimed horror movie Cuckoo. While a lot of Schafers Euphoria co-stars, like Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, and Sydney Sweeney, have been landing major film and TV roles left and right, not everyone on the show has been so lucky. Barbie Ferreira had a lot of her scenes cut from Jordan Peeles Nope and Alexa Demie hasnt been in a feature film since 2020s Mainstream.

"It's an Easter Egg" - Director Tilman Singer on Cuckoo's Chilling Siren & Original Songs
Image
The following contains minor spoilers for Cuckoo, now playing in theaters.

Neon's newest independent movie, Cuckoo, is snazzy, subtle and terrifying. There are very few moments where viewers will jump out of their seats in shock, but the creepy feeling that something is following the protagonist, Gretchen (Blade Runner 2099's Hunter Schafer), is scary enough. When 17-year-old Gretchen moves to the German Alps with her emotionally distant family, she unintentionally wanders into a scheme involving a resort owner, Herr Knig (Dan Stevens).

Director and writer Tilman Singer doesn't rely on outrageous imagery to execute Cuckoo's plot, which ends up grounding the film as a relatable story with a metaphoric twist involving birds and human children. Singer desired to keep the body horror to a minimum, with ear twitching and The Hooded Woman's screeching siren being the main source of inhuman effects. Talking to Cbr, Singer delved into...

‘Cuckoo’ Is Hunter Schafer’s New Horror Movie. ‘Batshit’ Would Be a Better Title
Image
Deep in the forests of Germany, there is a resort, a quaint getaway nestled right at the bottom of the Bavarian Alps. Step out of your car, and you immediately feel like you’re stepping into a postcard; you half expect men in lederhosen, hoisting large steins of Pilsner, to greet you as walk toward the lobby. It’s so picturesque that you might not notice the strange noise emanating from within the woods right next to the guest houses. It’s faint, but very shrill. Something feels weird about that sound,...

The Chilling Meaning Behind the Horror Movie Cuckoos Simple Title
Image
Quick Links What Is Cuckoo About? What Does the Cuckoo Title Mean? How Cuckoo's Dual Meaning Enhances Its Themes

Opening theatrically on August 9, 2024, Cuckoo is an acclaimed American thriller with shades of Cronenbergian body horror. The story concerns Gretchen (Hunter Schafer), a 17-year-old American who begrudgingly travels to the German Alps to live with her estranged father at a paradise resort. At the resort, Gretchen's mute sibling Alma (Mila Lieu) becomes increasingly targeted by their father's boss, Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens).

Using a clever pun, the title Cuckoo connotes a certain madness that defies the horrific action that unfolds and an avian parasite that reinforces the movie's disturbing theme. The latter meaning is explained at the end by Mr. Konig, a riveting yet risible Bond-like villain who overexposes his dastardly plot and forces viewers to rethink the plot. Although the second half does not live up to the first half,...

Cuckoo Review
Image
Plot: A 17-year-old girl is forced to move with her family to a resort where things are not what they seem.

Review: 2024 has been the year of the well-marketed horror film. With Longlegs already blowing audiences away, now it’s Cuckoo’s turn to prove itself. Presented as less of a crime thriller and more of a “what the hell is happening?” mystery, Cuckoo isn’t afraid to get weird. And that’s often where horror can be the most interesting. Nine times out of ten, the unexplained is more terrifying than the truth, so there’s always a concern about a film expounding too much. I’m happy to report that the film manages to maintain its mystery.

I’m going to make this review as spoiler-free as possible since I know there’s still a little bit of time till this releases theatrically. If you’re one of...

How Hunter Schafer Became ‘A Badass Thriller Bad Bitch’
Image
Hunter Schafer greets me with a confession. Beckoning me through a small gated fence into the winding maze of the Chateau Marmont’s lush, greenery-covered courtyard, she gives me a hug, then yawns. “There’s a lot happening right now,” she says. “I’ve barely gotten a handle on it.” There’s a gray vape in her hand, worn split-toe Tabis on her feet, and a wry smile on her face. “To be fully honest with you, I’d forgotten this was happening.”

It’s refreshing candor coming from a...

Hunter Schafer, Dan Stevens & Jessica Henwick Gush Over Demented New Horror Movie Cuckoo
Image
Hunter Schafer thrives in Cuckoo's action-heavy lead role, showcasing new sides of her talent. Dan Stevens embodies a sinister mystery inspired by German folklore, adding depth to the dream-like horror. Jessica Henwick shines in a complex role, exploring the mother/monster dynamic in the eerie atmosphere.

2024 has been a great year for horror movies and the latest is Cuckoo, a strange and dream-like feature from director Tilman Singer. Only his second film, Singer also wrote the film, which stars Hunter Schafer as Gretchen, an American teenager who is sent to live with her father and his new family as they move into a resort in the German Alps during the off season.

Gretchen, already desperate to return home, rebels against her father and stepmother, played by Jessica Henwick, even as Dan Stevens' Her Konig tries to make her assimilate to her new environment. What that entails is unclear, but...

‘Cuckoo’ Director Tilman Singer Explains Why He Apologized to Dan Stevens When They Met
Image
Cuckoo filmmaker Tilman Singer knows what he wants. That confidence was apparent when his film school thesis project, Luz, received distribution in 2018, kicking off the German writer-director’s promising future. The 70-minute supernatural horror film was made with the most modest of resources, but Singer’s talent was so evident that you couldn’t help but imagine what he’d be able to do with a healthy budget. It may have taken six years, but the answer is now here in the form of Cuckoo, which may or may not be connected to Luz. Hunter Schafer’s main character in Singer’s genre-bending horror film is named Gretchen Vanderkurt, while Luz’s Julia Riedler played a character named Nora Vanderkurt.

As of this moment, Singer is choosing to remain tight-lipped about the potential relationship between his first two features.

“I don’t want to answer that too concretely, but it’s a good last name.

Cuckoo Review: Dan Stevens & Hunter Schafer Shine In Neon's Kooky New Horror Entry
Image
Strange and fascinating sequences in Cuckoo sets the tone for an atmospheric horror experience. Strong character work brings unsettling relationships to life, especially with a standout performance from Hunter Schafer. The climax is intense and engrossing, leaving audiences with questions but eager for Singer's next project.

Writer-director Tilman Singer's sophomore effort Cuckoo opens with a strange and fascinating sequence that already justifies its title before cutting to its Hunter Schafer's Gretchen, following her family to their new home in the Bavarian Alps from the vantage point of the moving van. If that sounds like something of a non-sequitir, that's because Cuckoo relies on keeping us on our toes and asking questions. The movie's atmospheric approach to horror sometimes works against it, but stellar performances from Dan Stevens and Schafer ultimately make it a home run.

‘Cuckoo’ Review – High-Concept Horror Movie Gets Weird, Quirky, and Playful
Image
Writer/Director Tilman Singer continues his streak of experimental high-concept horror with his sophomore effort, Cuckoo. The filmmaker boldly marches to the beat of his own drum, examining heady themes of grief, reproduction, and gendered expectations through inventive, playful horror. That Cuckoo plays it fast and loose with details and plotting means that this body horror entry will likely polarize, but lovers of weird cinema will find a lot of charm in Singer’s latest.

After a peculiar cold open that won’t make sense until much later in the film, Cuckoo introduces seventeen-year-old Gretchen (Hunter Schafer). The moody teen wears her disdain plainly as she’s dragged by her father, Luis (Marton Csókás), stepmother Beth (Jessica Henwick), and her mute 7-year-old stepsister Alma (Mila Lieu) to the Bavarian Alps resort where Alma was conceived. Gretchen’s deep in the throes of grief over the loss of her mother, whose...

Nicolas Cage's Longlegs Has An Unexpected Connection With Neon's New 81%-Rated Horror Movie
Image
Cage's eerie portrayal in Longlegs may hint at Neon's next horror film, Cuckoo, through a peculiar scene involving his imitation of a cuckoo clock. Both Longlegs and Cuckoo explore dark themes with family ties, though not officially connected, offering unsettling coincidences. The similarities between the two movies are likely superficial, but they reveal Neon's boundary-pushing approach to horror storytelling.

Nicolas Cage's chilling performance as the main villain in Longlegs has been a big part of the horror movie's success, but one particular scene could be a secret Easter egg for the next project from the film's studio, Neon. Throughout Longlegs, Cage is fantastically creepy as the titular serial killer, also known as Dale Kobble. Although Longlegs is full of subtle allusions and references, one of the 60-year-old superstar's strangest moments stands out not just for its weirdness, but also for the bizarre link it shares with Neon's next 2024 horror film.

Cuckoo Director Tilman Singer On His Genre-Defying Horror Movie & Where The Idea For His New Creature Feature Came From
Image
Cuckoo is Tilman Singer's unique take on the creature feature genre, intertwining horror, comedy, and action. The film features a dreamy, fairytale-like atmosphere while exploring themes of grief, family dynamics, and sinister secrets. Singer's evolution from Luz to Cuckoo showcases his ability to mix genres and create a visually striking, emotionally complex film.

Cuckoo is filmmaker Tilman Singer's second feature, but you can't tell by looking at it. Set in the German Alps and shot on 35mm, the movie has a dreamy quality to it, almost fairytale-esque in its story about American teenager Gretchen, who moves with her father's family to a secluded resort in the off-season. This resort is home to more than just tourists, though, and as Gretchen becomes increasingly paranoid after experiencing several run-ins with a strange, humanoid creature, things naturally go haywire.

Cuckoo stars Euphoria's Hunter Schafer as Gretchen, with Jessica Henwick as her...

5 Films To Look Forward To At Fantasia 2024!
Image
Film festivals provide the opportunity to experience a wealth of incredible films that few people have heard of yet. With trailers often spoiling way too much in an effort to sell the film to an apathetic audience, going in blind is a luxury few can afford. This is why I encourage you to check out your local film festival and support independent filmmaking. Every year around July I start getting antsy because I know that Fantasia Film Festival is just around the corner. In years past we’ve seen some absolutely stellar entries. Hell, last year’s Red Rooms is still one of my favorite films of the decade and it’s yet it’s still under many people’s radar.

That’s the great thing about film festivals in general but Fantasia has the ability to bring about this feeling more often than not. Because their selection is always absolutely killer.
