“Succession” star Matthew Macfadyen may have found his next TV project. According to early reports, the Emmy-winning actor is attached to star as the lead in The Ink Factory’s new show, “Legacy of Spies,” which is based on author John le Carré’s series of George Smiley novels.

If the project finds a home and is greenlit, Macfadyen will play Smiley, the legendary intelligence officer at the center of multiple le Carré novels. The rights to the author’s work are owned by The Ink Factory, which is producing “Legacy of Spies.” Fifth Season is set to distribute the project, which has reportedly been shopped around and has already caught the attention of multiple potential buyers.

A TV series based on the works of John le Carré with Matthew Macfadyen attached to star is heating up the marketplace.

Variety has learned that the drama “Legacy of Spies” is currently in the works from producer The Ink Factory and with Fifth Season onboard to distribute. Macfadyen would star as George Smiley, a central character in a number of le Carré’s novels. Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram have written the initial scripts for the potential series, with Graham Yost onboard as an executive producer.

The project is described as an amalgamation of a number of le Carré’s novels, including “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” and “The Honorable Schoolboy,” as well as others and some unpublished work.

According to an individual with knowledge of the project, it has already been pitched to buyers both in the U.S. and U.

Daniel Brühl is getting back behind the camera to direct “Break,” a biopic about the tennis champion Gottfried von Cramm whose rise to stardom in the 1930s saw him face off with the Nazi regime in his native Germany.

“All Quiet on the Western” front star Felix Kammerer will lead the feature, which reunites the actor, Bruhl and the team behind the Oscar-winning WWI drama. “Break” is based on a screenplay by Hossein Amini from Marshall Jon Fisher’s “A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played.”

The Ink Factory (“The Pigeon Tunnel,” “The Night Manager”) and their partners Marc Platt and Adam Siegel for Marc Platt Productions are teaming with Malte Grunert for Amusement Park (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) and Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) for Nine Hours on the picture, which will be told in German and English.

Frank Murray and Frida Torresblanco have joined the production team of The Night Manager Season 2 via their nascent Hangtime International Pictures, with plans ramping up for the next instalment of the John le Carré adaptation.

Deadline revealed the launch of Hangtime in the run up to Cannes and The Night Manager is its first project. Pan’s Labyrinth and First Reformed vets Murray and Torresblanco will join the production team as co-execs.

Murray was brought on board the series by The Ink Factory co-founder and co-ceo Simon Cornwell and EP Stephen Garrett, Hangtime said.

Backed by an eight-figure investment out of New York, Hangtime is focusing on developing and producing U.S. and regional content with global appeal. The partners recently told us they will work on high-end, specialist and mainstream content across film, television, and documentaries in both English and Spanish.

John le Carré’s famous spy character George Smiley hasn’t retired quite yet. Nick Harkaway, le Carré’s son, is writing a new Smiley novel that will publish globally in fall 2024.

Smiley was known for his depiction as the archetypal British secret agent of the 20th century through novels such as The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley’s People. From his debut in 1961 to his most recent outing in 2017, Smiley novels have sold more than 30 million copies across formats.

The book will explore the decade of Smiley’s life in between the final scenes of The Spy Who Came in From the Cold and the start of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. The polite and self-deprecating character works for the shadowy British intelligence agency ‘The Circus’ and is considered a foil to the showier James Bond.

The festival runs in-person November 8-16 at IFC Center, Sva Theatre and Village East by Angelika and continues online through November 26 with films available to viewers across the U.S.

Tom Hiddleston is set to reprise his role as Jonathan Pine in a second series of the hit John Le Carré adaptation, produced by Amazon Prime Video and the BBC.

Deadline reports that season two will begin filming later this year in London and South America, under the codename Steelworks.

Alongside Hiddleston, David Farr – who wrote the original – will return as a writer on the second season.

The hugely popular 2016 show also starred Elizabeth Debicki, Tom Hollander, Olivia Colman, David Harewood and Hugh Laurie.

The release of a forthcoming second season has been speculated ever since.

The John le Carré adaptation of The Night Manager will be returning in a second season from Amazon Prime Video and the BBC. The original season, starring Tom Hiddleston, premiered back in 2016 and became the top-rated series in the UK. Deadline reports that Hiddleston is set to reprise his role as Jonathan Pine. Writer of the original series, David Farr, will also be returning to this new season.

The second season is being filmed under the codename of Steelworks and is scheduled to start production later this year in London and South America. The show is even expected to receive a two-season order, although, it has not yet been given an official greenlight for any further seasons by Amazon or the BBC.

Cleopatra Wong, a kick-ass Interpol agent known to have influenced some of Quentin Tarantino’s movies, is to be revived in an upcoming Asian TV series.

The female action hero was created by The Philippines’ Bobby Suarez (aka George Richardson) and featured in three movies – “They Call Her Cleopatra Wong,” “Dynamite Johnson” and “Devil’s Angels” (aka “Mean Business”) – produced in the late 1970s by Bas Film Productions. Her name is a reference to Blaxploitation character Cleopatra Jones, albeit melded with Bruce Lee action and early James Bond cool. Marrie Lee (aka Doris Young) starred in all three movies.

The Night Manager producer The Ink Factory is forging a TV version of John Le Carré’’s A Most Wanted Man almost a decade after making a feature film version, with Snabba Cash writer Oskar Söderlund attached as showrunner.

The TV version will see The Ink Factory reunite with German All Quiet on the Western Front indie Amusement Park, with both having produced the 2014 feature that was directed by Anton Corbijn and starred Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Willem Dafoe, Rachel McAdams and Daniel Brühl, the latter of whom is an Amusement Park partner.

No broadcaster is attached as of yet and Söderlund’s version will be updated to a modern day European context.

The Ink Factory has promoted Michele Wolkoff to creative director and Ian Pence to head of finance and operations.

Fighting With My Family and The Night Manager producer Ink Factory has promoted Michele Wolkoff to Creative Director out of LA, leading teams in London, Mumbai and Seoul.

Wolkoff takes over from Katherine Butler, who stepped down over the summer, while Ian Spence has been promoted to Head of Finance and Operations.

Wolkoff has been Head of Film and TV, LA, at Simon and Stephen Cornwell’s company since 2020, while she used to head up Development for Stephen Garrett’s Character 7 outfit.

Alibaba co-founder Joe Tsai and business partner Arthur Wang are facilitating the expansion into Asia of London and Los Angeles-based independent studio The Ink Factory.

The Ink Factory has previously delivered adaptations of author John le Carré’s novels including “The Night Manager” and the “The Little Drummer Girl.” It is currently working on a series adaptation of “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.”

Already working on an Indian adaptation of “The Night Manager,” the company’s expansion plan calls for the establishment of a slate of le Carré works in major Asia markets and a platform for other creators in Asia. It will also provide slate funding.

The Asian initiative is led by The Ink Factory’s executive producer Tessa Inkelaar with the support and collaboration of Tsai and Wang’s Hong Kong- and London-based media investment firm 127 Wall Productions.

The Ink Factory, the Endeavor Content-backed production company best known for making The Night Manager, has optioned C Pam Zhang’s debut novel How Much Of These Hills Is Gold with a view to developing a TV series.

The Ink Factory has partnered on the project with Anita Gou (The Farewell), who will executive produce through her Kindred Spirit banner. The writer is Hansol Jung, whose credits include Netflix’s Tales Of The City and Apple TV+’s Pachinko.

How Much Of These Hills Is Gold was selected as a Barack Obama Book of the Year in 2020 and tells the story of Chinese-American immigrants arriving in the U.S. during the gold rush. It’s a novel about the conflict between two siblings, carrying the body of their newly deceased father across a harsh landscape.

A sweeping adventure tale told through a multi-cultural revisionist lens, the book follows Chinese-American siblings, Lucy and Sam, cross the treacherous California hills in the twilight of the Gold Rush with a gun in their hands and a corpse on their backs.

The company, which has offices in London and Los Angeles, has promoted Michele Wolkoff and hired Josie Cyrus from AMC Networks as part of its U.S. push, which has been bolstered after Endeavor Content took a minority stake last year.

John le Carré, whose bestselling novels about the chilly world of Cold War espionage were the basis for a long series of popular film and TV adaptations, has died of pneumonia. He was 89.

Le Carré’s literary agency, Curtis Brown, announced his death on Dec. 13 via Twitter. The beloved storyteller, whose real name was David Cornwell, was a favorite among writers and screenwriters for the naturally cinematic touches and propulsive narratives he delivered over a career that spanned a half century and 25 novels, the most recent of which was published in 2019, three days after his 88th birthday.

Rome’s Mia market, the growing showcase for international TV series, feature films and documentaries, kicked off Wednesday in the Eternal City. The sixth edition of the event—whose acronym stands for the Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo, or the International Audiovisual Market—runs both physically in the Italian capital and online Oct. 14-18. This year’s edition has attracted 1,400 participants from 41 countries. Of the 600 international executives slated to take part, half will be present in Rome for the physical edition, according to the event’s organizers. At least 80% of the registered Italian participants will also attend in person.

“Mia has responded to an urgency not only in Italy but also internationally, that of maintaining international contacts during a period of isolation,” Mia director Lucia Milazzotto said at a press conference Wednesday, before appearing in conversation with Secretary of State Mirella Liuzzi to discuss new innovations in Italy’s audiovisual industry.

Rome’s Mia film and TV market has unveiled the first wave of projects for this year’s event, which will go-ahead as a mix of physical and digital elements from October 14-18.

The sixth edition of the Audiovisual International Market (Mia), which runs alongside the Rome Film Festival, will include 50 projects from more than 20 countries in its co-production market and pitching forum. The co-production market will comprise 16 projects, of which half are directed by women.

“The Night Manager” producer The Ink Factory has extended its co-financing agreement with media investor 127 Wall Productions until 2024.

London and L.A.-based independent The Ink Factory said the agreement will allow it to increase development funding and production co-financing capacity across both film and TV.

The existing co-financing facility was set up between Hong Kong and London-based 127 Wall Productions and The Ink Factory in 2017, and has supported projects such as Park Chan-wook’s adaptation of John le Carré “The Little Drummer Girl” for the BBC and AMC.

The move comes after The Ink Factory announced a strategic partnership in February with Endeavor Content, which saw the financing arm of Endeavor take a minority stake in the business. The deal increased development funding at The Ink Factory, and also gave Endeavor first-look for selling forthcoming Ink Factory projects internationally.
