Served as a lieutenant with the Seaforth Highlanders, a line infantry regiment of the British Army, in World War I and was wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans.

He appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award winners: Rebeca, una mujer inolvidable (1940) and La vuelta al mundo en 80 días (1956). He also appeared in three other Best Picture nominees: Las aventuras de Robin Hood (1938), En la noche del pasado (1942) and El padre de la novia (1950).

One child, daughter Valerie.

Made his stage debut in 1914 with Dennis King, who was actually the call boy, as two footmen in 'The Return of the Prodigal at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
