His father, Jacob Baer, was born in Michigan, the son of Aschill Baer and Fannie Fischel, who were Jewish emigrants from Alsace-Lorraine and Bohemia, respectively. His mother, Dora (Bales), was born in Iowa, and was of Scots-Irish descent.

Baer's first professional fight lasted just two rounds, with a TKO over his opponent, Chief Caribou. Baer received $35 for the win.

Max Baer Park in Livermore, California, is named in his honor.
