A while back, a terrific book about the golden age of action stars called “The Last Action Heroes” came out (buy it here). Written by Nick De Semlyen, the book takes a very affectionate look at all of the icons we grew up with in the 80s and 90s, with one notable exception. Steven Seagal does not come off well in the book – at all. One of the wildest stories from the book recounts a time when Seagal grew outraged over the fact that a meeting room he wanted was being occupied by the legendary Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.
The two actors, who would have been in their late sixties then, were participating in a read-through for their hit comedy Grumpy Old Men. According to the book, the vibe in the room was light, with the two old pros cracking up their director, Daniel Petrie and assembled guests. One of them was William Osborne,...

A new challenger has entered the Top 10 on MGM+. Ben Affleck's 1998 sci-fi disaster film Armageddon has arrived on the streaming charts.
According to FlixPatrol, as of Aug. 7, Armageddon is ranked No. 10 on MGM+'s Top 10 Overall chart in the United States. Much like the asteroid in the movie, Armageddon has burst onto the streaming chart and will now try to climb up the ranks as a worthy group of hit shows and movies try to stop its climb. First in Armageddon's path is Jason Statham's 2024 sleeper hit The Beekeeper at No. 9, followed by the fan-favorite '80s buddy cop movie Lethal Weapon at No. 8 and Jack Quaid's action-comedy Novocaine at No. 7. Luckily for Armageddon, Lethal Weapon and Novocaine are down from where they were yesterday, which suggests that they may be on their way off the streaming chart.

John Wick: Chapter 4 star Scott Adkins continues to cement himself as the best-kept secret in action movies, with the actor now combining martial arts spectacle with the drama of war in the first trailer for his upcoming action thriller, Prisoner of War. The movie was picked up for distribution by Well Go USA at the end of last year, with Prisoner of War now all set to land on VOD on September 19, 2025, in the United States. You can check out the gripping footage below.
Directed by Louis Mandylor, who previously shared the screen with Adkins in the Debt Collector franchise, Prisoner of War is based on the unbelievable true story of the Bataan death march, which saw thousands of Filipino and U.S. prisoners of war being forced to walk between 60 and 70 miles following the Japanese victory at the Battle of Bataan. "Oh, I will keep fighting. You can keep lining up your men. Eventually, you'll just run out of warriors..." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for Prisoner of War, yet another junk action movie from this group of stuntman / filmmakers. Also featuring a generic title, even though it is technically about a Pow. "Behind enemy lines, survival is the only mission." British Raf Wing Commander James Wright is captured by the Japanese during WWII and forced to fight in brutal hand to hand combat. The Japanese soldiers get more than they bargained for when Wright's years of martial arts training in Hong Kong prove him to be a formidable opponent. Of course. Scott Adkins takes his high-flying kicks and is forced to use them the fighting ring again, but it turns out to be in an unlikely place… at a Pow camp behind enemy lines during World War II. The action star developed the story for Prisoner of War, which was previously called Death March. Independent distributor, Well Go USA, picked up the rights for the film and has now released the trailer. Adkins is likely best known for his character Yuri Boyka from the Undisputed sequels, but the martial artist has also popped up in films like Doctor Strange and John Wick: Chapter 4.
Adkins’ story was penned by scribe Marc Clebanoff. In the story, per Variety, “a British airman washes ashore after being ejected from his plane and becomes a prisoner in a Japanese-run Pow camp. While waiting to join the infamous Bataan death march, the airman is tortured by the...

Remember the time in which we were promised that streaming services would eliminate the cost and need of cable? Nowadays, you need approximately 10 streaming services to watch everything you want, and if my math is correct, that's more expensive than cable ever was -- oh, and there are ads now too! Yeah, streaming has become like cable, but somehow much worse.
With the rising cost of life and the economy being about as stable as a one-wheeled tricycle, a lot of people wonder what's necessary and isn't -- especially when it comes to entertainment. Unquestionably, Netflix remains the granddaddy of streaming services, but does it justify a subscription? If you consider the below 15 shows, yeah, it does. These might not be the highest-ranked series on Rotten Tomatoes, nor the most-watched programming according to Tudum, but they're the Netflix shows that make it easier to say, "Okay. With Superman set to be the first flight for James Gunn’s Dcu, it’s only a matter of time until DC Studios announces the next Batman actor. Sure, everyone has their own favorite performer in mind, and some people would love the chaos if the Dcu cast Jack Black as the Dark Knight for instance, but Fortress of Solitude put together a fan poll on our Facebook page, asking our readers who they would choose. Serious contenders, of course. The method behind the madness involved selecting three actors who have been linked to the role for the longest time: Scott Adkins, Jensen Ackles, and Alan Ritchson. While there’s no guarantee that they’re even in consideration now, these are names often flung around when discussing the next Batman. The Fortress readers had their say – and let’s say the popular choice garnered nearly 50% of the votes! Scott Adkins...

It goes without saying that Keanu Reeves pretty much steals the show in every John Wick film (and possibly even every film?) he graces. But what about the countless big names that swoop in with each installment? It's too many to count, but each makes their presence known, especially in the critically acclaimed John Wick: Chapter 4. At a whopping 2 hours and 49 minutes, watch out for standout supporting turns by martial artists Marko Zaror and Scott Adkins — the latter undergoing an outrageous transformation to make the extremely fit performer look extremely overweight as "Killa." John Wick: Chapter 4 wasn't the first time that Adkins and Zaror worked together — or the last. They co-starred in past cult classics like the Undisputed films, and their latest movie Diablois out now.

“One-man army” films are in vogue right now, but this is not a new trend. When Westerns were at the peak of their popularity, you had several stories of a highly trained gunslinger who had been wronged in some way out for blood, with actors like Clint Eastwood and John Wayne at the helm. Back in the ‘80s and the ‘90s, action stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, and Jean-Claude Van Damme would headline movies about a guy who was out to get revenge for personal, professional, or nationalistic reasons. And while mainstream cinema refused to use such narratives for a while until Keanu Reeves became John Wick, that trend was kept alive in the direct-to-video releases by immensely talented artists like Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror, and Michael Jai White. Recently, well-known faces like Orlando Bloom, Tom Hardy, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, and Jennifer Lopez...

Dating back to 2007, the Undisputed films have become cult classics to action junkies — and who's to say the sports franchise is said and done after four installments? Underrated action star and John Wick actor Scott Adkins has become the face of the gritty cinematic universe, despite the fact that he didn't even appear until Undisputed II, and the famed action star might just have more in the tank for his crazed Yuri Boyka persona. It doesn't take a film professor to see how there could be endless stories to dream up in this dark world of underground fighters competing in illegal competitions, and MovieWeb recently caught up with Adkins to learn more about just that.
The longtime performer and expert martial artist was recently promoting his latest action movie, Diablo, which is out now, and confirmed to MovieWeb that there could be more story to tell specifically about his standout character from Undisputed.

If they’ve never seen it, action fans would be well-advised to check out the Undisputed series of Dtv action films. Undisputed, for those who don’t know, was a theatrical boxing film directed by Walter Hill that tanked in theaters, but became a hit in the home video market. As such, it got a sequel, but it had nothing to do with the original, other than the fact that it centred around prison fighting, with the sequels embracing martial arts as opposed to the classic boxing of the original. Significantly, they helped propel Scott Adkins, who played the villainous Boyka in the second, to the top-tiers of the dtv action market, with him creating such a sensation that Boyka became the hero in the third and fourth films (the whole series ranked highly in our list of Best American Martial Arts Films).

The direct-to-video action film has its own distinct rhythm, a pulse I’ve followed since my days renting tapes from the local video store. Diablo immediately taps into that familiar beat. We meet Kris Chaney (Scott Adkins), an ex-convict whose world-weary face tells its own story before he even throws a punch.
He’s been smuggled into the vibrant, sun-drenched landscape of Colombia with a singular, dangerous task. His objective is to abduct Elisa, the daughter of the powerful crime lord Vicente. This isn’t a simple snatch-and-grab for cash.
The film quickly signals that Kris is operating from a place of grim duty, a promise to someone lost that puts him on a collision course with an entire criminal organization. The air is thick with the promise of violence from the opening frame.
The Saint, The Sinner, and The Spectre
The film’s engine is a triangle of well-defined personalities.

Ernesto Diaz Espinoza’s “Diablo” (2025) is a frantic actioner that, however, does little to resuscitate the genre. A film in this space needs not just a few darn good sequences pirouetting off the cliff of wild implausibility and solid craft but also anchoring itself to a fabric of earned emotion. There ought to be characters we can be at least marginally invested in or intrigued by. By randomly planting buried family history, sentimental dynamics in the narrative tangle, emotion cannot be miraculously elicited.
“Diablo” tries to insert emotion and engagement through lazy means that neither knows the map of dynamics or tie action into its folds. It’s a film that’s too scattered and harebrained, and effete to land its punches. There are assassins with private vendettas, an axe to grind, but the ruthlessness feels more meandering and drifting than locking into our trepidation. To top it all, the...

Lionsgate's latest action-thriller was already off to a solid start by featuring two standout actors from a certain beloved John Wick film. Fans have been praising Diablo, out now, for the killer action sequences centered on underrated action stars Scott Adkins and Marko Zaror. In addition to John Wick: Chapter 4, they also co-starred in the cult classic Undisputed flicks over the years. MovieWeb recently spoke with Adkins amid the release of Diablo and learned more about his work alongside Zaror, including their new action-packed film.

"Six-foot-three, like a brick outhouse, can flip like you wouldn't believe it. Like, the agility on this guy — he's so athletic. He's one of the most athletic people that I've ever met. And he...

Plot: Kris Chaney, a recently released ex-convict embarks on a perilous mission. He kidnaps Elisa, daughter of Vicente, a powerful gangster, which puts them in danger from El Corvo, a psychopathic killer seeking revenge against Vicente’s family.
Review: It’s tough to stand out in the action space these days, but my ears perk up whenever I see Scott Adkins‘ name involved. No matter the film, Adkins gives it his all, and always provides some genuinely fantastic fight sequences. Now, he’s teaming up with fellow action star Marko Zaror to create a unique story of revenge. And despite all the death and chaos, there’s actually some heart and humor that makes Diablo stand out.

Back in April, it was announced that the Academy Awards will finally be acknowledging the achievement in film stunts with their own category. “Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.“
We recently interviewed Scott Adkins for his new film, Diablo, and the action star gave his two cents on the matter. Adkins stated,
I think everyone’s just like ‘Finally,’ ‘Makes sense,’ ‘Why did it take so long?’ I’d be interested to see how they structure it. Because obviously there’s so many wide range and facets of stunt choreography — cars, fights, pitfalls…you know, fire burns. I guess it’s gonna be...

Anyways, Kaosayananda has made a new indie action film starring Jack Kesy and Peter Weller and it will be released in select theaters, digital and on demand on July 11th by Saban Films. Diablo pits two modern martial arts cinema icons against each other: Marko Zaror and Scott Adkins. It’s pulsating and pulverizing in equal measure, though this isn’t the first time that Zaror and Adkins have locked up against each other on screen. This time, however, it’s more special, because it’s a story that they both conceptualized. “We were actually shooting John Wick 4 in Berlin,” Adkins said. “We were hanging out with each other because we’re friends – he’s one of my best friends in the business – and we’re discussing if we can come up with an idea that we can both star in a movie. So, we started batting around ideas, and we came up with something resembling what we’ve ended up with. Then we started talking to Ernesto [Díaz Espinoza], his director from Chile who he’s made a lot of movies with. We...

One of the best-kept secrets in action cinema (who hopefully won’t stay such a secret for much longer) returns with a new thriller that could just be one of the best of the year. For fans of the action genre, Scott Adkins is one of the best underrated actors in the industry. After doing bit parts in Jackie Chan’s Hollywood ventures, Adkins gained significant fame in the role of Boyka. Adkins then went on to absolutely dominate the field of direct-to-vod releases, occasionally delivering bangers like Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, Avengement, and One Shot. And while his work was greatly revered by those who watch any and every action film (read: me), it was his turn as Killa Harkan in John Wick 4 that garnered him worldwide acclaim. The same can be said about Marko Zaror. He starred alongside Adkins in several movies and even played the final boss in Sultan, a Bollywood film starring Salman Khan. But it was his role as Chidi in the fourth John Wick film that got everybody to sit up and take notice. Now, Adkins and...

Ernesto Díaz Espinoza’s Diablo kicks off the action with the mysterious Kris Chaney (Scott Adkins) kidnapping the young Elisa (Alanna De La Rossa), who is the daughter of the powerful Colombian gangster Vicente (Lucho Velasco). Kris tells Elisa that he’s only fulfilling a promise he made to her deceased mother years ago, and you can probably guess what the actual twist is here. Vicente isn’t about to let Elisa get away, though, so he puts out a bounty on Kris’ head. One man who answers the call is the unrelenting and unrepentant El Corvo (Marko Zaror), who also has his own violent history with Vicente. Mat Sansom writes the script for Diablo, and it isn’t exactly a story bursting with too much novelty or surprise. It’s an action-centric tale told many times before in movies of the past – particularly in the ’80s and ’90s. Heck,...
Netflix’s K.O. (2025), directed by Antoine Blossier, is a gritty French-language action thriller that delivers a potent mix of bone-crunching fight sequences, underworld drama, and a surprisingly emotional core. It follows Bastien (played by Mma fighter Ciryl Gane), a disgraced former champion haunted by a fatal mistake. When the widow of the man he killed reaches out for help finding her missing son, Bastien embarks on a violent journey of redemption alongside hard-boiled police captain Kenza (Alice Belaïdi). Set against the neon-soaked streets of Marseille, K.O. blends intense close-quarter combat with themes of vengeance, grief, and atonement.

Day of Reckoning emerges not simply as another entry in the crime thriller ledger, but as a contemporary meditation on the enduring American Western, its archetypes transplanted to a tense, modern stage. The narrative draws us into the seemingly placid confines of a small Midwestern town, a familiar trope often signifying a society on the cusp of disruption.
This disruption arrives with the force of a pursuing U.S. Marshal, his hunt for a dangerous bank robber, Kyle Rusk, culminating in a desperate gambit: taking Rusk’s wife, Emily, as leverage. At the heart of this maelstrom is Sheriff John Dorsey, the local embodiment of the law, who finds himself enmeshed in a conflict that rapidly transcends a straightforward manhunt.
The film signals from its outset an ambition to dig beneath the surface of its action-oriented premise, hinting at a deeper excavation of moral quandaries and the complex geographies of human character.
