Ssff & Asia 2023, one of the largest international short film festivals in Asia accredited by the Academy Awards, began online screenings on Thursday, April 27, ahead of the opening ceremony which will be held on Tuesday, June 6.

Today, on May 9th, to commemorate Ice Cream Day, we will world premiere the online screening of “I Scream Fever” directed by Tetsuya Chihara of Lemon Life (art director and design producer) and starring Kotona Minami, Yumi Adachi, and Utaha (Wednesday Campanella), Marika Matsumoto, and Hattori (Macaroni Enpitsu). Suicide Forest Village is the latest film from Takashi Shimizu, best known as the writer and director of The Grudge, both the original Japanese film and its US remake. But he has contributed a lot more to the genre both before and since. That includes an episode in another popular franchise, Tomie: Re-birth as well as Flight 7500 and Howling Village.

Japanese Horror ‘Suicide Forest Village’, From ‘The Grudge’ Director, Lands North America Deal

Exclusive: Cinedigm has acquired all North American rights to Suicide Forest Village, Takashi Shimizu’s supernatural horror inspired by a real forest in Japan known for its frequent suicides and disappearances.

Shimizu previously helmed the Ju-On (The Grudge) franchise, directing the 2004 originals and three sequels. His latest stars Jun Kunimura (Kill Bill: Vol. 1), Yumi Adachi (Tokyo Vampire Hotel) and Asuka Kurosawa (Silence) in a story following a group who come across a mysterious box with a deadly secret: the item holds a curse that quickly spreads to those around them. The source of the box is the ‘Jukai Village,’ a rumored location deep within the Jukai Forest.

Shimizu co-wrote the film with Daisuke Hosaka, who previously worked together on Howling Village and The Shock Labyrinth 3D. The film is produced by Muneyuki Kii, Harue Miyake, Chikako Nakabayashi and Daisuke Takahashi.

Amazon Prime Video Japan is working with maverick Japanese director Sion Sono on original series Tokyo Vampire Hotel, which is scheduled to stream from June 16.

Sion Sono’s first drama based on an original screenplay, the series revolves around a battle to save mankind from a vampire tribe. The cast includes actress Kaho, in her first full-scale action role, Shinnosuke Mitsushima, Ami Tomite, Yumi Adachi and Megumi Kagurazaka.

The nine-episode series was produced with Nikkatsu Corporation and written by Jun Tsugita and Manabu Ikarimoto. Tomohiro Kubo and Daisuke Matsuo serve as directors and writers of two episodes. Filming took place on three soundstages at Nikkatsu Studios and on location in Transylvania, Romania.

Sion Sono has inked a prime deal. The provocative Japanese auteur responsible for such controversial, must-see films as “Love Exposure” and “Tokyo Tribe” is creating the original series “Tokyo Vampire Hotel” for Amazon. The show will consist of nine episodes, all of which will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Japan beginning June 16.
