‘Evita’ Sparks a Frenzy in London with a Blazing Rachel Zegler
Image
Rachel Zegler stirs hearts in the theatrical revival of Evita, delivering a fierce performance under direction that rewrites the musical rulebook.

London’s West End pulses with revolutionary energy thanks to Evita, the iconic work by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, now reborn with unprecedented force through the bold vision of director Jamie Lloyd and a star turn from Rachel Zegler, who makes her British stage debut with a commanding presence that redefines her career.

Far from traditional, this daring production—first acclaimed in 2019 at Regent’s Park and now reimagined for the London Palladium—transforms Eva Perón’s story into a visceral spectacle, part rock concert, part political rally. Live cameras project Zegler’s now-legendary Don’t Cry For Me Argentina to audiences both inside and outside the theatre; she doesn’t just perform—she builds a new legend from the ground up.

Clad only in a black bra,...

‘Evita’ Theater Review: Rachel Zegler Takes London by Storm as Eva Perón in Otherwise Uneven Revival
Image
Could it be time for Jamie Lloyd to hit the pause button? The prolific director, whose radically reimagined Sunset Blvd. last month won Tony Awards for best musical revival and lead actress Nicole Scherzinger, is rolling out productions at such a rate that his template — big stars, event theater, a style that might be described as minimalist swagger — is beginning to look entrenched, and a bit hit-or-miss.

Spectacle worked wonders with his recent, disco-dancing Much Ado About Nothing starring Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell. But while there was a glorious opportunity for a revisionist take on Evita — to reconfigure the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice mega-musical from the 1970s for a more politically confused and troubled age — Lloyd has simply turned up the volume.

The result feels decidedly erratic. The central performance from Rachel Zegler at times gives you goosebumps, but at others is in desperate need of direction...

‘Evita’ Opening Night: Rachel Zegler’s Moving Balcony Scene, Keanu Reeves, Pedro Pascal & Sarah Paulson — Watch Deadline’s Videos
Image
Over the last couple of weeks, Londoners have been gathering every night in the street under the London Palladium balcony to watch Rachel Zegler’s powerful rendition of Don’t Cry For Me Argentina in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita, directed by Jamie Lloyd.

Yesterday’s official opening night was no exception. As ticketed guests walked down the red carpet into the theater, hundreds of people queued for hours on the sidewalk to catch a glimpse of Zegler as Eva Perón for free during her viral balcony scene. Deadline was among the rapt crowd.

Zegler walked onto the balcony just after 9pm to an adoring audience that cheered her on throughout the 7-minute performance. The outdoor scene was shot live and then relayed onto a big screen to the audience seated in the auditorium. Although Zegler’s Perón urged the crowd not to cry for her, several...

Breaking Baz: London Palladium Hit ‘Evita’ Could Move Straight To Broadway As Rachel Zegler & Jamie Lloyd Cry: “Don’t Wait For Me Argentina!”
Image
Exclusive: Jamie Lloyd (Sunset Blvd.) is not prepared to sit on his hands and wait another two years to take the electrifying West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita starring an unbelievably incandescent Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) to Broadway. “I would love for it to go straight away,“ he told this column, stressing that means early next year.

Rice is in agreement with the director, telling Deadline that he wants to see Evita in New York as soon as it’s ready to go. “We’re not getting any younger are we?” says the lyricist nodding towards the composer he’s known for more than six decades.

Some connected to the show would rather wait until 2027 but Lloyd emphasizes that he’s eager for 2026. “That’s when I would like it to go, as soon as possible, really,” he said, a point he repeated...

According to Baz Bamigboye of Deadline, sources close to the production are tight-lipped, but insiders suggest that aligning schedules for a New York run is already being quietly considered. Breaking Baz: Red-Hot Rachel Zegler Soars In ‘Evita’ London Palladium Previews, Heating Up The Box Office As Chatter Turns To Broadway Transfer
Image
Exclusive: Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) is a sensation as her voice soars through the London Palladium’s auditorium — and beyond — portraying Eva Perón in Evita, the classic Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd-Webber show directed by Jamie Lloyd. Also, Zegler, all 5-foot-2 of her, is the biggest star in town, with punters adding $200,000 and more to the box office daily since previews began a week ago, bringing the total advance, as of late Friday afternoon UK time, to in excess of $9 million for a 12-week summer run.

Broadway might get a taste of Zegler’s “highflying, adored” Evita, as one of the show’s songs puts it, in 2027, but more on that farther down the column.

Michael Harrison, who produces Evita for the Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals partnership along with the director’s Jamie Lloyd Company, declines to discuss the production’s box office figures, though he agrees that they’re “healthy.

Darren Criss Scores Third Straight Tony for ‘Glee’ Stars but Will ‘Chess’ Make It Four?

Glee makes it three straight at the Tonys.

When Darren Criss picked up a Tony Award on Sunday night for best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for his turn in Maybe Happy Ending, the veteran star became the third straight Glee alum to win a trophy on Broadway’s biggest night. He followed hot on the heels of Jonathan Groff, who won his first Tony last year for Merrily We Roll Along (and he was nominated this year in the same category as Criss for Just in Time), and Alex Newell, who won best featured actor in a musical for Shucked in 2023.

Erivo Dismisses Backlash Over Jesus Role at Hollywood Bowl
Cynthia Erivo
Cynthia Erivo said she “can’t please everyone” when asked about the online anger directed at her casting as Jesus in August’s Hollywood Bowl concert staging of Jesus Christ Superstar. The Emmy-, Grammy- and Tony-winner was replying to conservative commentators—posts amplified by Elon Musk among them—that called the engagement “blasphemous” and “anti-Christian bigotry”.

The production plays the 17,500-seat venue on 1–3 August, its first appearance at the Bowl since 2016. Erivo headlines a company led by director-choreographer Sergio Trujillo and music supervisor Stephen Oremus; Adam Lambert will sing Judas. The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced the show in February as a centre-piece of its 2025 summer season, driving early ticket demand across the three-night run.

Criticism erupted almost immediately after that announcement and surged last week under hashtags such as #NotMyJesus, promoted by right-wing influencers and a Florida pastor during a livestream that drew 120,000 views on X. In a separate interview...

Cynthia Erivo Responds to Backlash Over Her Jesus Casting in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Musical
Image
Cynthia Erivo has responded to the backlash she received for her upcoming lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl.

After it was announced earlier this year that the Wicked star would be playing Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical, some conservatives were quick to criticize her for taking the role as a Black queer woman. However, during a recent interview with Billboard, Erivo couldn’t help but laugh at the negative response.

“Why not?” she said of her casting. “You can’t please everyone. It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realize, ‘Oh, it’s a musical, the gayest place on Earth.’”

The actress will take to the stage at the famed Hollywood venue from Aug. 1-3, alongside Adam Lambert, who is set to play Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Cynthia Erivo On Criticism Over ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Casting: “It’s A Musical, The Gayest Place On Earth”

Cynthia Erivo is addressing the criticism over her casting in the upcoming three-night production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

The Wicked: For Good star shut down the negativity around her, scoring the titular role of the Hollywood Bowl production.

“Why not?” she told Billboard about the outcry from conservative critics. “You can’t please everyone. It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realize, ‘Oh, it’s a musical, the gayest place on Earth.'”

Performances of the musical will start on August 1 and run through August 3. Sergio Trujillo is set to direct and choreograph the special presentations, with Stephen Oremus serving as musical director and conductor.

The Lion King Was Originally Titled ‘King Of The Jungle’ Until Disney Realized This Major Mistake!
Image
The Lion King’s Original Title, Scrapped Scenes & Forgotten Songs Will Leave You Stunned ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Disney’s The Lion King wasn’t always the roaring success we remember. In fact, it was almost called King of the Jungle, per sources. The catch? Lions don’t live in the jungle. Once the creators realized this, the iconic title was changed, setting the stage for what’d become one of Disney’s most beloved animated classics.

Almost 25 years ago, The Lion King introduced us to the circle of life, hakuna matata, and the savanna’s most intense sibling rivalry. As Disney prepared for the live-action remake, it was the perfect time to look back on the original’s legacy and uncover its most surprising secrets.

Back in production, The Lion King was overshadowed by Pocahontas. Many top animators jumped to work on Pocahontas, expecting it to be the bigger hit.

Lady Gaga won her Academy Award for the song "Shallow" from the 2018 film A Star Is Born. She is a 14-time Grammy Award winner, with the first for The Fame and "Poker Face" in 2010 and the most recent earlier this year for...

Elton John songs: 25 greatest hits ranked worst to best
Image
If Sir Elton John's career had only spanned the 1970s, he would still be a music legend, an icon of glam and progressive rock. Fortunately, he forged on, segueing into each new era of rock and branching into film and Broadway with comparable success and his signature aplomb and style. We've undertaken a nearly impossible task -- narrowing a huge catalogue of memorable compositions down to the 25 best.

John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, and showed an affinity for playing the piano at a young age. In 1967, he answered an ad for songwriters and met Bernie Taupin, which led to a long and successful collaboration, with Taupin writing lyrics to which John composed music. It took a few years of struggling, but in 1970 they had their first top ten hit with "Your Song." In 1972, "Honky Chateau" became his first of seven consecutive number one albums in a three-year period.

The Vocal Coach Who Keeps Ariana Grande in Tune — and Taught Timothée Chalamet to Sing
Image
It’s been a great year for theater kids in Hollywood.

Ariana Grande and Timothée Chalamet are two of the biggest names to have scored Oscar nominations this awards season, partly — or some would argue, entirely — down to their impressive vocal work in Wicked and A Complete Unknown, respectively. But what you might not know is the two shared a singing coach for their industry-acclaimed performances.

“When Ariana or Timothée walk into a room, all the molecules change,” Eric Vetro tells The Hollywood Reporter. “If you had no idea who they were, you would still know, ‘Oh, there’s something special about these people.'”

Vetro is singing coach to the stars. Only a snippet of his resume does all the talking: the New York native has worked with Angelina Jolie (Maria), Renée Zellweger and Emma Stone in their Oscar-winning outings in Judy and La La Land, Monica Barbaro (A Complete Unknown...

Jeff Daniels To Star In ‘Dilettante’ NY Media Drama In Works At Apple From ‘Julia’ Creator & Berlanti Productions
Image
Exclusive: Apple TV+ has landed for development Dilettante, a series starring Jeff Daniels as a character that will likely get the New York media circles buzzing, Deadline has learned. The project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Productions, is inspired by Dana Brown’s memoir about working for former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter.

Written by Brown and Julia creator Daniel Goldfarb, Dilettante is described as a fictionalized coming-of-age story set in the glamorous and cutthroat “Golden Age” of magazines in 1990s New York.

Daniels will play a fictional magazine editor that is certain to draw parallels to Carter the way another work of fiction about a young assistant to a powerful New York magazine editor, the movie The Devil Wears Prada, has been evoking Anna Wintour as a prototype for its editor character played by Meryl Streep.

Jeff Bridges previously played a magazine editor loosely based on Carter...

Ariana DeBose Won’t Star in ‘Evita’ in London ‘Due to Scheduling’ (Exclusive)
Image
Ariana DeBose won’t be crying for Argentina.

The Oscar winner was in talks to star in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of “Evita” at the London Palladium, but sources tell me things didn’t work out “due to scheduling.” The musical is scheduled to run June 16 to Sept. 6.

DeBose is currently shooting “Scarpetta,” the Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta novels with Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis.

“We’re 70% there,” DeBose told Deadline’s Baz Bamigboye in January about her possible “Evita” deal.

“Evita,” from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, tells the story of Argentine political powerhouse Eva Perón. Elaine Paige played the title role in the original 1978 West End production in London. Patti LuPone originated the role on Broadway in 1979. Madonna starred in the 1996 film adaptation.

My sources insist that DeBose is interested in returning to Broadway “when the time is right.

Patti LuPone Reveals There Won’t Be an ‘Agatha All Along’ Season 2 – But She Wanted One
Image
Patti LuPone revealed that “Agatha All Along” won’t be getting a Season 2, saying showrunner Jac Schaffer told her the fate of her character, Lilia Calderu, ahead of the show’s ending.

“There won’t be one,” LuPone told Bravo executive Andy Cohen on his Sirius Xm podcast series “Andy Cohen Live.” “Jac Schaeffer, the creator, came into my trailer and she said, ‘Patti, I’m just here to tell you that Lilia’s going to die,’ and I went, ‘But I wanted a second season.'”

She continued, sharing that Schaffer’s reason for declining a second season for “Agatha All Along” was the same for when she rejected a Season 2 for “WandaVision.”

“[Schaffer] said, ‘I don’t do second seasons,'” LuPone added. “She said, ‘They wanted me to do a second season of Wanda Vision and I didn’t.’ She said, ‘There’s too much to write,’ so...
