Ed Helms certainly did not end up having the career that his parents envisioned for him. “The Hangover” — and its two sequels — are about as far from traditional, buttoned-up, family-friendly comedy as a movie can get, and this ran precisely counter to Helms’ upbringing, as he shared with host Ted Danson on the SiriusXM podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.”
“I grew up in a kind of a repressed Southern home. Politically, very progressive, but still a very socially conservative kind of environment,” Helms said (via Variety). “And so ‘The Hangover’ is nuts. That’s not what they raised me to do, to be in a movie like ‘The Hangover.’ So my parents — at that point they’d seen me do crazy stuff on ‘The Daily Show’ and ‘The Office’ — and so there was some sort of acceptance already, but, still, I was nervous for my parents to see ‘The Hangover.'”

Ayo Edebiri is opening up the origins of her now-viral joke in which she claimed to be Irish during a red carpet interview.
Speaking on Conan O’Brien’s Needs a Friend podcast on Monday, Edebiri joked that those around her might’ve been confused when she committed to the bit.
“I remember talking about this with a friend. I was like, ‘My favorite type of joke lowkey might be a lie.’ Like, something where it’s almost not even funny, it’s mostly just funny to me,” Edebiri told O’Brien about the origin of the joke.
The joke began when Edebiri was interviewed by Letterboxd at South by Southwest in March 2023. After she joked that she played the donkey in the 2022 film The Banshees of Inisherin, Edebiri began speaking with an Irish accent and jokingly said that she lived in Ireland for four years in order to get “into character.

There is a non-zero chance that a character in the Simpsons canon was directly responsible for arming Afghan Mujahideen fighters — including Osama bin Laden — during the Soviet-Afghan War, and I’m not talking about George H.W. Bush.
Ever since the show’s inception, the Simpsons writers’ room has been full of the kind of worldly, annoying nerds who play My Dinner with Andre arcade games and say things like “Spring forth, burly protector, and save me!” For a cartoon about the dumbest fictional town in America, The Simpsons had some serious brainiacs crafting the immaculate Golden Age seasons, and the Harvard-educated comedy writers were constantly sneaking esoteric references to classic literature and world history into many of the best episodes of television ever.
As such, we can hardly call it a coincidence that, in the Season Four episode “New Kid on the Block,” the Simpson kids’ hip new babysitter...

Hugh Jackman is pretty inseparable from Wolverine at this point. Troye Sivan in the opening flashback of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and a certain cameo in "Deadpool & Wolverine" aside, Jackman is the only actor to play Logan on the big screen. He's been doing it for 25 years (almost) straight at this point, too. ("Till you're 90.")
But back in the late 1990s, when the first "X-Men" movie was still coming together, Jackman was a musical and theatre star not hugely famous outside his native Australia. Suffice to say, he wasn't the instant number one pick for Logan, so "X-Men" held auditions to find the right actor.
For starters, the role of Wolverine was famously Dougray Scott's, but he had to drop out to film "Mission: Impossible II." Jackman's career as Wolverine began with him being the understudy. Scott wasn't the only unused Logan,...

The Old Guard 2, the sequel to the Covid-era Netflix streaming hit, continues to waste our time in more ways than one. The action is dull — especially when it involves the actors — and only rises to “acceptable” when the stunt team takes over.
The script, particularly the dialogue, is yawn-inducing, making me grateful I’m not immortal. I can’t imagine watching this intellectual property get recycled for centuries. Then again, maybe it can be — since the writers have conveniently discovered a new storytelling device to write themselves out of any corner.
As Conan O’Brien jokes on his podcast, most superhero movies open a portal whenever they need one. In The Old Guard 2, immortality is traded like playing cards. Sometimes you have it, sometimes you don’t. It’s not a power—it’s a vibe.

Netflix subscribers know of the score of mystery shows on the streamer. There are the spy thrillers like The Night Agent, the various Harlan Coben dramas, and more. Many involve searching for a missing person and often with a supernatural edge.
However, Netflix is home to a bevy of terrific classic murder mystery shows as well. They can range from sprawling casts with whodunnits to a few more like police procedurals. They all involve searching for a killer, often in a tight setting and play well with the clues and twists. If you’re a classic murder mystery fan, each of these shows is worth looking into for a fun ride, as only Netflix can provide.

The format of a late-night talk show has been etched in stone since the era of Johnny Carson, and only a few have tried to break that formula. Chevy Chase took a stab at it with his ill-fated "The Chevy Chase Show" that flamed out after only six weeks on the air. Conan O'Brien was able to last a lot longer than anyone expected when he first got the job by breaking all the rules of late-night, which has helped him find a new life through his YouTube channel and podcast empire. Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert has leaned into the format's archetype by playing the part of the TV showman, albeit with a geekier side than anyone before him.

Chris Pratt’s breakout role as a lead actor was the goofy and lovable Andy Dwyer in the mockumentary sitcom Parks and Recreation. Pratt then went on to become a Hollywood mainstream hero with his role as Peter Quill / Star-Lord in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. James Gunn sought an actor who could handle both action and silly humor, and Pratt was the perfect fit for the role.
Over the years, Pratt proved that comedy comes to him so effortlessly. We have heard stories from those who worked with the actor about his spontaneous improvisations. As fans of the actor, we have also seen him unleash his superb sense of humor during promotional appearances and interviews. Here are the best off-screen moments of the actor.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was Quentin Tarantino‘s ode to old school television, as Leonardo DiCaprio’s Rick Dalton was the star of a fictional western, Bounty Law, then bounced from show to show in a series of guest spots. When Tarantino was a guest on Conan O’Brien‘s podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, both men would reminisce in depth about the nostalgic TV shows that they grew up watching in their youth. So much so that it would leave Conan’s usual participating co-hosts silently listening while Tarantino and O’Brien would bring up deep cuts.

Louis C.K. was one of the most prominent “cancellations” in comedy. A “cancellation” after which he won a Grammy for Best Comedy Album, mind you. An album on which he jokes about the exact sexual misconduct that… ended his career? He says from the stage of a sold-out stadium? The acrobatics of the angered mind that’s read half of the First Amendment are hard to follow.
The stories about him intimidating female comedians into watching him masturbate to completion against their will are the centerpiece of his legacy now, as they well should be. Some of his old jokes themselves, even removed from his penchant for cornering women and exposing himself to them, probably would raise an eyebrow or inspire a thinkpiece themselves. Most comics now would prefer not to have an extended clip of them using the n-word on wax, for example.

When Lost first hit TV screens in 2004, it instantly became one of ABC’s biggest hits. A plane crash, a mysterious island, and a cast of strangers trying to survive – the show kept viewers on the edge of their seats. But what many don’t know is that Lost didn’t come out of nowhere. The idea actually started with something far simpler: a reality show.
That’s right – ABC wanted a scripted series inspired by the success of Survivor, the hit competition where players are stranded on a remote island. What came next was a creative storm that turned a basic survival idea into one of the most iconic shows in history. Let’s dive deeper!
Survivor, Conan O’Brien, and Tom Hanks’ Cast Away inspired ‘Lost’
Lost completely transformed the TV genre with its high-stakes drama and gripping visuals. But how it came to be also had its own interesting story.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot started well with the 2009 film starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. However, it quickly lost momentum with Into Darkness, and after Beyond, the Kelvin timeline seems to be stuck in limbo. The filmmaker has admitted to many mistakes on his part in Into Darkness, but one scene is living on in infamy.
Abrams’ decision to show actress Alice Eve in nothing but her undergarments in one scene in the movie seems to be the most memorable (in a bad way) moment from Into Darkness. The filmmaker and writer Damon Lindelof apologized for it after fans criticized them for using female characters only for the male gaze.

Memorial services generally aren’t a barrel of monkeys, but when a famous comedian passes away, your laugh mileage may vary. After Norm Macdonald passed, several prominent funny people spoke at his service, including David Spade, Conan O’Brien and Macdonald’s Weekend Update co-conspirator Jim Downey. But the funniest part of the occasion didn’t come from someone’s prepared remarks, said Spade this week on the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast.
Spade was asked to speak, and after some “I’m no good at that” posturing, he agreed to do his part. Downey spoke first at the service, Spade remembered, earning a standing ovation. Conan followed, who was met by another standing ovation. Longtime Macdonald collaborator Lori Jo Hoekstra was next — she got a third standing O. It was a tough act to follow when O’Brien introduced Spade as the next speaker. “Well,” Spade began, “I...

When Steve Jobs passed away in 2011, he was a national folk hero — the Apple icon defined 21st-century life with innovations like the iPod, iPad and iPhone. But at least one comedian didn’t appreciate his contributions. “I’m not a big fan of Steve Jobs,” Bill Burr complained to Conan O’Brien back in 2012.
“He's like Edison,” protested O’Brien, unable to comprehend how anyone could have an issue with Jobs. “He invented all this stuff!”
But did he? Burr couldn’t imagine Jobs sitting down in his black turtleneck to invent the iPhone, welding away on electronic prototypes. “Didn’t he have a crew of guys helping him out?” Burr griped. “Why, when he went to those nerd fests, didn’t he have a chorus of scientists behind him who helped him out? He walked out like he was Tesla tapping into electricity.”

Pixar is preparing to revisit one of its most iconic franchises, with Toy Story 5, the continuation of the beloved animated series that has been a cornerstone of the studio’s legacy since 1995.
What's the (toy) story?
According to early details shared by the filmmakers, Toy Story 5 will explore the role of toys in an age dominated by screens. Bonnie, last seen as a young child in Toy Story 3, is now eight years old and spending more of her time with a new tech tablet she’s named Lillypad. Her growing attachment to the device has led to a gradual disinterest in her traditional toys, sparking an identity crisis among her longtime favorites. The situation comes to a head with the arrival of Lilly, a sleek, voice-interactive AI character who quickly becomes the center of Bonnie’s attention.

Pixar had a massive year in 2024 with the success of Inside Out 2. The animated studio has even more exciting projects for the future, including a new Toy Story installment.
The animated franchise kicked off three decades ago, and it's still going story. With Toy Story 5 set to debut in June 2026, the studio is getting ready to promote the upcoming film. At a presentation attended by Cbr, Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter teased the plot details for the upcoming Toy Story 5.
Pixar has had a very eventful day, as it brought several updates at France's Annecy Animation Festival. As it announced some new projects, like the original animated film Hoppers, the upcoming Elio, and Gatto, and also addressed some sequels, including Toy Story 5.
"Our first film, Toy Story 30 years ago, if you can believe it, if you do the math, that means I was around 12," Docter started.

Toy Story 5 is hitting theaters next summer, but until now, details on the animated sequel have been sparse. Toy Story is somewhat of a frustrating franchise for many fans purely because Toy Story 3 seemingly served as the perfect ending to the series that catapulted Pixar and took animated films into a brave new world. Despite the satisfying and emotional closure of the third movie, Disney would still give audiences the chance to revisit the toys in a small fashion with shorts that continued to show what our plastic friends were up to. Then, Toy Story 4 would be released. It would gain critical and audience acclaim. However, it meant saying an emotional goodbye yet again.
That won’t stop Disney from releasing a fifth film in the series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new look at Toy Story 5 was shown at the recent Annecy International Animation Festival. In the mid-1990s, NBC decided it wanted out of the Adam Sandler business. That is, until it wanted back in.
In January 1995, producer Lorne Michaels was summoned to the office of NBC honcho Don Ohlmeyer, who wanted Sandler and Chris Farley fired from Saturday Night Live. Michaels fought back. “I said, ‘Don, it’s generational. For you, a good show is Bill Murray as the lounge singer,’ ” Michaels remembered, according to Lorne: The Man Who Invented Saturday Night Live.
Michaels was able to shield Sandler for a while, but Ohlmeyer eventually got his way. Michaels worked out an agreement with their agents, and both Farley and Sandler were out, ostensibly to work on movie projects. Neither comic wanted to go, but at least their success at the box office served as revenge.
The movies were so popular, in fact, that NBC realized that maybe it had made a mistake.

Neither comic wanted to go, but at least their success at the box office served as revenge.
The movies were so popular, in fact, that NBC realized that maybe it had made a mistake.

The inductees for the Television Academy's 27th Hall of Fame have officially been announced. In the past 40 years, the Hall of Fame has recognized over 150 honorees, from actors, directors, and producers to hosts, comedians, journalists, musicians, tradesmen, and more, for their extraordinary work in the TV industry. This year's chosen few will be inducted into the hallowed Hall of Fame during the Televerse Festival on August 16.
The six new honorees are Viola Davis, Conan O'Brien, Ryan Murphy, Henry Winkler, Mike Post, and Don Mischer. The latter is being honored posthumously for his work as a live-event producer, having sadly passed away at age 85 in April. Mike Post is a legendary TV composer, credited with scoring well over 1000 episodes in the Law & Order franchise. Murphy has created and written some of the biggest TV dramas of the 20th century, while Davis, O'Brien, and Winkler are legends in front of the camera.

Exclusive: Veteran casting director and executive Deborah Aquila, most recently EVP and head of casting for streaming series at CBS Studios, is leaving as part of the companywide layoffs at parent Paramount Global. According to sources, Aquila and four other members of the studio’s casting team, ranging from coordinator to VP, were impacted by the Tuesday cuts that are reducing the overall Paramount workforce by 3.5%.
Also leaving this week is Nick Bernstein, CBS’ SVP of late night programming, West Coast. His departure is tied to the wrap of the network’s After Midnight whose last show is airing on June 12. It is not directly related to the layoffs though any eliminated positions help divisions meet headcount targets.
Aquila joined Paramount TV Studios as EVP and head of casting in 2020. In early 2023, she took oversight of casting for both CBS Studios and Paramount TV Studios, the latter of which shut down last August.

In 2010, Sang-yeop Yeun, an actor who went professionally as Steven, booked a role on "The Walking Dead," a zombie horror television show based on a long-running comic book series. While this wasn't his first professional credit -- you may have forgotten his cameo on "The Big Bang Theory" -- it was his breakout role, immediately endearing the performer to a wide audience and opening the doors on his career.
Since then, Yeun has played a rich and varied slate of roles in a wide variety of genres and tones while simultaneously seeming like a kind-hearted, self-effacing, and easily funny hang, thanks to a series of viral appearances with Conan O'Brien and a post-fame uncovered Second City sketch. He strikes one as an unpretentious actor who can do it all, and his body of work supports this thesis with aplomb.
