Every Taylor Sheridan Show Releasing This 2025 Fall, Ranked Least to Most Anticipated
Image
In 2025, fall television isn’t just crowded; it’s ruled by one man: Taylor Sheridan. The Yellowstone architect and TV powerhouse is back, and this time, he’s not playing coy. With three of his shows hitting Paramount+ before the year ends, Sheridan is staging an audacious takeover of the small screen, and Paramount has officially confirmed the storm is coming. From oil fields and mob wars to prison politics and crime dynasties, Sheridan’s slate is bursting at the seams and fans are already bracing for impact.

No exact dates for most of these have been nailed down (thank the looming Skydance-Paramount merger), but the company has already drawn the lines in the sand: Landman season 2, Tulsa King season 3, and Mayor of Kingstown season 4. Also, there’s one Yellowstone sequel spin-off that is all locked in for fall. While the latter remains under wraps, the first three series are coming in hot,...

Landman (2024)
Has Landman Been Renewed for Season 2? Here’s What We Know
Landman (2024)
Landman Season 2 is officially confirmed. Paramount+ announced the renewal in March 2025 following a highly successful first season. Production kicked off in April 2025 in Texas, with the new season slated to premiere in December 2025, just in time for the holiday season. This marks a slight shift from the initially expected November release.

What Happened in Landman Season 1?

Landman introduced viewers to Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton), a Texas oil “landman” navigating the cutthroat business world intertwined with crime, family drama, and corporate intrigue. The show explored Tommy’s complex relationships with his boss Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), his dysfunctional family, and the dangerous drug cartel led by Galino (Andy Garcia).

The season finale delivered a jaw-dropping twist: following Monty’s death, Tommy unexpectedly inherits the presidency of M-Tex Oil, facing a precarious financial future and cartel pressures. The personal and business stakes reached new heights, setting up a tense cliffhanger for...

Sydney Sweeney Made Her TV Debut In A Popular 2000s Superhero Series
Image
When Tim Kring's superhero series "Heroes" debuted in 2006, it took the world by storm and became popular instantly. The show's first season explored a brand-new, wholly original universe where random citizens began to develop supernatural abilities. At the center of the drama was Claire (Hayden Panettiere), a high school cheerleader who found that she could heal from any injury. Meanwhile, in Japan, a fella named Hiro (Masi Oka) realized he could teleport across the planet and even shift through time. Similarly, a woman named Niki (Ali Larter) discovered she had superhuman strength, while Milo Ventimiglia played Peter, a retirement home nurse who could replicate the superpowers of others.

On the opposing side, there was Sylar (Zachary Quinto), a dangerous villain who could absorb other people's powers after killing them. (It's heavily implied he would eat their brains.) Elsewhere, Jack Coleman co-starred as a character referred to only as Horn-Rimmed Glasses,...

Landman Season 2 Gets an Exciting Update That Will Make Taylor Sheridan Fans Happy
Image
The Taylor Sheridan universe keeps thriving. With the Yellowstone franchise set to continue with multiple spinoffs, Sheridan has other shows that have nothing to do with the Western franchise.

One of them is Landman, starring Billy Bob Thornton. The series premiered on Paramount in late 2024 and became an instant hit, leading to its Season 2 renewal. Per Collider, fans have a lot of reasons to be happy because Landman Season 2 has set a release window for December 2025.

Landman premiered on Paramount+ on Nov. 17, 2024, and started production on Season 2 in early April. Luckily, it will remain consistent with one season a year, as the upcoming entry will follow after 13 months. The announcement is in line with previous reports, which claimed the show is set to return later this year.

Landman comes fromTaylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace, and follows Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Norris, who is a petroleum landman and the Operations VP at M-Tex Oil.

Taylor Sheridan's 'Landman' Delays Release by One Month to December 2025
Image
Back in May, a Paramount earnings call gave fans hope that they would see Taylor Sheridan’s record-breaking series, Landman, return to screens by November, following hot on the heels of another Sheridan show, the Jeremy Renner-led drama, Mayor of Kingstown. Now, during the latest update on the state of Paramount, it has been revealed that Landman fans will have a little longer to wait then originally expected.

Landman has been in production since last month on its second season, and the show has a lot to live up to when it makes its return to Paramount+. The first season debuted in December 2024 and immediately claimed a place as the most-watched Paramount+ original series – although its crown would be taken soon after by the return of another of Sheridan’s many shows, 1923. In its first four weeks on streaming, Landman reached 14.9 million households according to global streaming figures.

Beloved Fantasy Star, 64, Is Secretly a Huge Fan of Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Landman’
Image
Outlander star Graham McTavish knows a thing or two about sweeping dramas with big themes and bigger characters. So when he sings the praises of Landman, the latest series from Taylor Sheridan and Billy Bob Thornton, it’s worth paying attention. Speaking at the Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere (via Gold Derby), McTavish didn’t mince words. He called Landman one of the shows this year he felt was most deserving of Emmy nominations — even though neither received any.

Despite Landman’s strong ratings, critical acclaim, and a Golden Globe nomination for Billy Bob Thornton, the oil drama was completely shut out of the major Emmy categories when nominations were announced last week. And it wasn’t alone. Not a single one of Sheridan’s six shows currently on air — including Mayor of Kingstown, Yellowstone, 1923, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman — received a single nod in marquee categories like acting,...

Tom Hardy’s 75% Rotten Tomatoes Crime Series With a Former James Bond Earns Praise From Beloved Fantasy Star
Image
At the Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere, Graham McTavish made headlines — not just for promoting Starz’s new prequel series, but for using the red carpet spotlight to throw some love toward Landman and MobLand, two of Paramount+’s most buzzed-about dramas. McTavish, known for playing Dougal MacKenzie in the Outlander universe, and more famously, playing the role of Dwalin for The Hobbit trilogy), didn’t hesitate when asked which shows he thought deserved Emmy attention this year. “Landman and MobLand,” he said firmly, praising Taylor Sheridan’s oil-field epic and Guy Ritchie’s stylish gangster saga as two of the series he couldn't stop watching this year. And he’s not alone in thinking that.

While the Emmys may have completely shut out Sheridan’s Landman — despite a Golden Globe nomination for Billy Bob Thornton — fans have flocked to the series. It became the highest-rated freshman drama...

Is Landman Season 2 Spreading Itself Too Thin After Jon Hamm’s Monty Miller Death?
Image
From the moment Landman season 2 was announced, I’ve had one pressing question: how do you replace a presence as commanding as Jon Hamm’s Monty Miller? As the sharp, calculating CEO of M-Tex, Monty wasn’t just a character; he was the pulse of Landman’s corporate world. His sudden death from a heart attack in season 1’s finale didn’t just shift the plot; it shook the entire structure of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western drama.

Now, with Demi Moore’s Cami Miller, Andy Garcia’s cartel-connected Gallino, and Sam Elliott joining the fold, there’s no shortage of star power lined up to step into Monty’s place. Each brings a distinct kind of authority to Tommy Norris’s (Billy Bob Thornton) oil empire, but that’s where my concern kicks in: can Landman juggle all these heavyweights without pulling itself apart?

Tommy is set to rise as...

'Landman' Season 2 Filming Location Hints at a Big New Storyline for a Controversial Character
Image
It looks like one of the most talked-about characters in Landman is heading off to college — and the production team just dropped a major clue. As Landman Season 2 continues filming across North Texas, a new location might reveal what’s next for Ainsley Norris, the daughter of Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris and a beacon of positivity in Taylor Sheridan’s rough-and-tumble oilfield drama.

According to a casting notice obtained by Legacy Casting, Landman is filming “on-campus scenes” this week at Texas Christian University (Tcu) in Fort Worth, and they’re looking for extras aged 18–24 to play college students. Considering Ainsley’s arc in Season 1 focused on her return home and her struggle to reconnect with her father, this campus setting strongly suggests she’ll be starting (or returning to) college in Season 2.

What Does This Mean For Landman Season 2?

While Landman has already filmed in oil towns like...

Billy Bob Thornton Gets Back to Work in 'Landman' Season 2 Set Images
Image
Billy Bob Thornton is back in his boots. Paramount+’s Landman has officially returned to production for Season 2, and the first set images from this week’s shoot in Dallas prove that Tommy Norris isn’t hanging up his hat anytime soon. Spotted filming Monday morning in the city’s upscale Knox District, Thornton was seen outside the Michelin-recommended restaurant Mister Charles, flanked by extras and dressed in a denim-blazer combo and signature cowboy hat. Production ran between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., according to notices obtained by The Dallas Morning News, with filming continuing later into the afternoon in Dallas’ Arts District.

Though the shoot wasn’t open to the public, curious pedestrians lined the sidewalk, catching glimpses of the Landman crew, the cast, and the logistical operation that shut down traffic in both directions on Knox Street between Travis and Cole. Flora Street and Crockett Street were also cordoned off nearby.

Despite High Ratings, Emmy Voters Shun Taylor Sheridan and Billy Bob Thornton’s Hit Western
Image
Taylor Sheridan may rule the ratings, but the Television Academy just gave him the cold shoulder — again. Despite high hopes and a full-court press by Landman stars like Billy Bob Thornton, Sheridan’s latest hit was completely shut out of the major Emmy categories when nominations were announced Tuesday morning. And it wasn’t the only one. Not a single one of the six Sheridan-created dramas currently on the air — including Mayor of Kingstown, Yellowstone, 1923, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman — landed a single nod in a marquee category like acting, writing, or directing. And yes, we have all noticed. And no, it doesn't make any sense.

Paramount+ had particularly high hopes for Landman, which premiered to strong ratings and marked Sheridan’s latest collaboration with A-list talent. Thornton even scored a Golden Globe nomination for his work as oilman fixer Tommy Norris, which had been seen as a potential Emmy springboard.

How Yellowstone Creator Taylor Sheridan Really Felt About Working With Sam Elliott On 1883
Image
I'm one of those unlucky film lovers who've only become familiar with Sam Elliott's work as an actor well into their adulthood. For some inexplicable reason, I missed Rowdy Herrington's cult classic "Road House" growing up, George P. Cosmatos' beloved Western, "Tombstone," and I was too young and clueless to truly appreciate his brief performance in the Coen brothers' "The Big Lebowski." But I'm happy to report that I'm all caught up with those gems now, which, unsurprisingly, makes me a big Elliott fan.

However, one of the precipitating reasons for that is Taylor Sheridan's epic Western miniseries, "1883," which I consider the absolute pinnacle of his work as a TV writer/creator. It's one of those Westerns that smartly utilizes technological advancements and modern storytelling devices to tell a historical and old-fashioned tale. But without Sam Elliott's Shea Brennan (alongside the rest of that stellar cast), a former Union Army captain,...

“I wrote it for him”: Taylor Sheridan’s Most Underrated Show That He Made for Angelina Jolie’s Ex Dethrones MobLand on Paramount+
Image
Taylor Sheridan’s Landman has achieved a new feat. The show just climbed to the #4 spot on Paramount+, officially overtaking MobLand on the top 10 best shows chart (via FlixPatrol). While the show didn’t create a lot of noise when it first aired, given Sheridan’s Yellowstone popularity and Angelina Jolie’s ex-husband, Billy Bob Thornton‘s acting chops, it quickly gained a huge fan following.

Moreover, we all very well know that Sheridan doesn’t follow the traditional playbook when it comes to creating shows. For most creators, the script comes first, and then the casting begins. But for Landman, he reached out to Thornton even before the script took shape. That’s right, in an interview via Deadline, the Yellowstone creator added:

I reached out to Billy and said, I have a world I want to drag you through. I told him the world. He said, great. We...

Sam Elliott & Billy Bob Thornton's Returning Western Show Gets Exciting Production Update After Major BTS Changes
Image
New behind-the-scenes details signal an exciting shift for Landman season 2, with Taylor Sheridan’s Texas-based oil drama filming in a different Southwest state. Landman debuted in 2024 with Billy Bob Thornton as its frontman, Tommy Norris. The drama will return with Landman season 2 this November, adding Sam Elliott to Landman’s cast for its sophomore run.

As filming for Landman season 2 is underway, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that several casting calls around the city have signaled the show’s production returning to North Texas, at locations near Cresson and Jacksboro. The Landman crew is returning from Oklahoma, where they shot scenes revolving around a casino, expanding the show’s reach.

'Landman' Season 2 Returns to Texas Following Surprise Behind-the-Scenes Shake-Up
Image
Taylor Sheridan’s Landman is back in downtown Fort Worth this week—but don’t let the familiar location fool you. While the Paramount+ hit series is returning to some of its Season 1 haunts, a surprise production shift to Oklahoma earlier this summer has shaken things up in a big way behind the scenes.

Production resumes this week in the heart of Fort Worth from Tuesday through Thursday, with cameras rolling on several downtown blocks and a full schedule of road closures to prove it.

This marks the latest stop on a busy Texas shoot, with Landman already filming in Fort Worth this past April and May, including major set pieces at Tcu and a funeral sequence in Jacksboro. But even as the crew returns to familiar ground, it’s clear Season 2 is heading into uncharted territory—literally and narratively.

What makes this week’s shoot particularly notable is that...

Legally Blonde Dethrones Chris Pratt's $1.3 Billion Sci-Fi Film on the Streaming Charts in Major Upset
Image
The iconic 2001 Reese Witherspoon comedy, Legally Blonde, pulls ahead of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom on streaming.

Per FlixPatrol, the hit 24-year-old comedy Legally Blonde took the #3 spot on Peacock's top 10 most streamed shows in the United States as of July 5, 2025. This puts the film ahead of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom despite the recent release of Jurassic World Rebirth. The 2018 Jurassic World film quickly became a streaming hit, but in a huge upset, has been beaten out by the comedy. Considered one of the staple films of the 2000s, the legal comedy follows Witherspoon as sorority girl turned Harvard student Elle Woods and her initial mission to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner Huntington III (played by Mathew Davis). Currently, just ahead of Legally Blonde sits Despicable Me 3 at #2 and The Woman in the Yard at #1.

‘Landman’ Season 2 Uproots Filming For a Major Shift Behind the Scenes
Image
Taylor Sheridan’s oil-rig drama Landman is making a surprise move north — and no, not to Canada. The Paramount+ series has officially expanded its production footprint into Oklahoma for Season 2, marking a major shift from the show’s Texas roots. While much of Landman Season 2 has been filming across Texas since March — including scenes on Tcu’s campus, downtown Fort Worth, and a somber funeral sequence shot in Jacksboro — production is now rolling into Durant, Oklahoma, a small city about 120 miles northeast of Fort Worth.

The move signals both a behind-the-scenes evolution and the potential for new storylines, with casino scenes and new background characters on the docket. The latest filming location isn’t random. Durant is home to the Choctaw Casino & Resort, a likely setting for the new scenes, though producers haven’t officially confirmed it. Texas-based Legacy Casting is now looking for local talent to film in Durant today,...

‘Landman’ Star, 49, Hits Back at Critics For “Not Being Comfortable” Watching Taylor Sheridan’s Oil Drama
Image
Landman may be another gritty, dare we say trashy, addition to the Taylor Sheridan universe — but this time, it’s not the plot or the politics stirring debate. It’s the women. While the oil field drama has racked up solid viewership and is already headed toward Season 2 — in production now — some critics and fans have taken issue with the way female characters are portrayed, calling them overly sexualized or one-dimensional. But Landman star Ali Larter, 49, isn’t buying it. And she’s not staying quiet.

“Nobody's putting me in a position that I'm not comfortable being in,” Larter told The Hollywood Reporter. “I love playing this character. If there was something I was uncomfortable with, I wouldn't do it. What's more uncomfortable is that people are so uncomfortable by their sexuality.”

Larter plays Angela Norris, the glamorous wife of Billy Bob Thornton’s character, Tommy — a woman often seen sipping cocktails in a swimsuit,...

Landman Star Ali Larter Would Return To This Classic Comedy Franchise In A Heartbeat
Image
Long before Ali Larter was cast as the free-spirited Angela Norris on "Landman," she played Brooke Taylor-Windham in the comedy "Legally Blonde." The character is a fitness instructor who gets accused of killing her elderly husband, but Reese Witherspoon's Harvard law student, Elle Woods, believes that she's innocent and decides to represent her in court. The truth comes out in the end, and Brooke avoids a stint in prison, meaning that she's free to return in the long-gestating "Legally Blonde 3" or any other project set in this universe. What's more, Larter is keen to reprise the role, as she told The Hollywood Reporter:

"I've always heard that ['Legally Blonde 3'] was getting written, and that Mindy Kaling was doing it, so who knows. Now they're doing the ['Legally Blonde'] TV show, so that's going to take the space of that for a while. But I think...

Freddie Prinze Jr. & Ali Larter Share Parenting Survival Skills in DoorDash’s ‘Summer Scaries’ Short

How Landman Star Ali Larter Feels About Taylor Sheridan's Controversial Writing
Image
Taylor Sheridan's shows often receive criticism for their portrayal of women, and his oil-worker drama "Landman" is no different. In this case, some fans believe that Ali Larter's Angela Norris is too over the top and shallow, as she spends a lot of her time drinking cocktails and hanging out at a pool. Similarly, critics have argued that Michelle Randolph's Ainsley Norris, a teenager, is way too sexualized, especially in the scenes that involve her wearing bikinis, talking about her love life, and being checked out by older men.

Be that as it may, Larter believes that Sheridan writes women who have depth, and there is nothing wrong with them being risqué from time to time. As she told The Hollywood Reporter:

"Nobody's putting me in a position that I'm not comfortable being in. I have two children. I've been married for 19 years. I love playing this character.

22 Years After Tombstone, Billy Bob Thornton Gave Taylor Sheridan 1 of His Best Shows Yet (& It's Dominating the Streaming Charts)
Image
Taylor Sheridan is synonymous with Yellowstone, which has been a major hit since 2018. However, the creator has been behind other successful shows that are not part of the Yellowstone universe.

One of them is Landman, which premiered on the same streaming service in late 2024. The drama series stars Billy Bob Thornton, which came over two decades after he starred in the Western Tombstone, where he played Johnny Tyler, a cowardly scoundrel. Now, 22 years after the film premiered, Thornton's Landman is dominating the streaming charts, per FlixPatrol.

Landman has just risen two positions in Paramount+'s Top 10 overall, which also includes Amazon channels. The series is currently in fourth place, just behind Showtime's The Chi, Criminal Minds, and Guy Ritchie's MobLand.

The drama series premiered on Nov. 17, 2024, and, over eight months later, it is still attracting attention. That comes in handy for the show's future because Landman has already been...

Landman’s Most Hated Episode Is Actually Its Smartest
Image
Landman may thrive on oil-rig chaos, corporate power plays, and sharp dialogue, but Episode 7 – All Roads Lead to a Hole – dares to do something different, and it’s why fans initially hated it. After six pulse-pounding chapters, the series hits the brakes. The oilfields go quiet. The tension simmers instead of explodes. For some viewers, it felt like filler. But look again, and you’ll find the smartest storytelling move in the whole season, even though it has the lowest IMDb rating.

This subdued hour trades spectacle for soul, peeling back layers of guilt, shifting alliances, and revealing just how much the real battles happen in boardrooms (and hearts), not just on the job site. It’s the calm before the storm, and the moment Landman proves it’s more than just another high-stakes energy drama.

My Take: Why Episode 7 Ditches Fireworks for Fallout and Lands a Bold Win for...

With 8.1 IMDb Rating, This Forest Whitaker Drama Blows Every Taylor Sheridan Series out of the Water
Image
If you’re still caught up in the Yellowstone universe, thinking that’s peak TV drama, let Godfather of Harlem slap you awake. Forest Whitaker, folks, doesn’t just act in this 2019 drama series; he literally detonates. There’s one scene where he goes absolutely feral, yet never breaks composure. That’s domination, if you ask me.

With an 8.1 on IMDb, this show’s Harlem in the ‘60s, drenched in power, blood, and soul. Every Sheridan series looks like cable filler next to this beast. Miss this one, and you’re missing Forest Whitaker at his most dangerous.

Godfather of Harlem Ratings and Reviews Already Put It Ahead of Taylor Sheridan

While Tulsa King was soaking up the limelight with Stallone swagger and Taylor Sheridan‘s signature punch, Godfather of Harlem was quietly building its empire, and now, it’s running the block. With Season 4 released on April 13th, and a rock-solid 8.1 IMDb score,...

How Taylor Sheridan's Personal Life Helped Influence Angela's Arc In Landman
Image
Compared to his numerous other TV shows that are brimming with testosterone, intensity, and gravitas, Taylor Sheridan's Paramount+ hit "Landman" is significantly looser. I mean that in a good way. It's not that the Billy Bob Thornton-led oil drama doesn't have its raw, violent, and utterly suspenseful moments — hell, it even kicks off with one, as our hero stares down a Mexican cartel member in a hangar after he just shot someone dead — but this time the writer-creator also allows his characters to dabble in some more casual fun. That mainly happens when Thornton's Tommy Norris isn't out there on the field trying to solve problems for his billionaire oilman employer, Monty Miller (Jon Hamm). When Tommy is simply being a dad and an ex-husband whose wife wants to get back with him, his much-welcome deadpan humor lands with great aplomb.

But that wouldn't be nearly as entertaining...

Billy Bob Thornton's Personal Life Influenced Landman More Than You Think
Image
The critical and viewership success of "Landman" is proof enough that it ranks among Taylor Sheridan's best shows, but the oil-worker drama doesn't rewrite his creative rule book by any means. In fact, some folks might assume that "Landman" and "Yellowstone" exist in the same universe, as they are both neo-Westerns whose plots involve organized crime and center around characters who boast strong family values. The family aspect of "Landman" also allows Billy Bob Thornton to bring elements of his personal life into his performances as series lead Tommy Norris, as he knows all about being a husband and father.

"That dynamic is like real life," as he noted at the Atx TV Festival while speaking on a panel about his experiences playing the dad to Michelle Randolph and Jacob Lofland's Ainsley and Cooper Norris, respectively, on "Landman" (via People). That said, Thornton added that his actual daughter...

How Taylor Sheridan Convinced Billy Bob Thornton To Star In Landman
Image
If Taylor Sheridan is a fan of your work, then landing a part on one of his shows can be a breezy effort. Jon Hamm's "Landman" audition was the easiest of his career, as Sheridan essentially offered him the part after flying him down to Texas to explain his vision for the show. And Billy Bob Thornton didn't have to audition to play "Landman" protagonist Tommy Norris either, as Sheridan penned the oil-worker drama with the veteran actor specifically in mind. Here's what Thornton said to Gold Derby in regard to having the part written just for him:

"You don't get that handed to you very often. When somebody says, 'I think I have your voice, I know how you talk, I know how you think and I'm gonna write this show specifically for you.' It was just a great honor. To see scripts written that you look...

Jon Hamm Got It Easy: Taylor Sheridan Put Ali Larter Through Gruelling ‘Landman’ Audition for a Reason
Image
“If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain,” Dolly Parton once quipped, and honestly, Ali Larter might as well have it stitched on a pillow. Because while Jon Hamm was busy sipping ranch air and being handpicked for Landman like the last rose on The Bachelor, Larter was out there earning her stripes the old-school way.

Hamm, who played Monty in Landman, called it “the greatest audition process ever,” and it sounds like it. No casting couch. No call-back chaos. Just a stroll through Taylor Sheridan’s West Texas ranch, a chat, and he was in. Meanwhile, Larter went through what can only be described as a cinematic obstacle course. And the way she tells it? Sheridan wanted to see who could take the heat before stepping on his set. Spoiler: She could!

Landman's Ali Larter Remembers The Tough Audition Process Taylor Sheridan Put Her Through
Image
"Landman" was the easiest audition of Jon Hamm's career. Taylor Sheridan invited the actor to his ranch in Fort Worth, explained his ideas for the show, and offered him the part right there and then. However, not every cast member had such an easy time of it, as Ali Larter, who plays Angela Norris on the oil-worker drama, described her audition as one of the toughest of her career.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the "Varsity Blues" star recalled having to read four pages of the script during the initial stages, followed by 10, and so on. After that, she was summoned to Fort Worth for a screen test -- along with 11 other actors who were in the running to play Angela. That's when things got really tough. In her own words:

"You get called in one by one, and then you have to wait until everyone's done.

The Secret Landman Flaw Can Doom Season 2 That’s Much Worse Than Yellowstone
Image
Doing a job poorly isn’t edgy; it’s embarrassing. We’ve seen viewers turn off Landman Season 2 more from frustration than boredom. Unlike Yellowstone, where even flawed characters feel competent, Landman seems stuck in a loop of professional incompetence. From oil execs clueless about land deals to a bartender who picks fights, the show is littered with illogical choices that shatter immersion.

Viewers aren’t hating; they’re hopeful, hoping for competence that never materializes. They’re begging for depth and realism. If Landman really wants to earn its stripes in season 2, it needs to respect its characters and its audience by making their jobs believable and their decisions resonant.

In Yellowstone, characters are morally gray but undeniably competent. Rip, John, and Beth get things done even if it’s brutal. But in Landman,...

Billy Bob Thornton Reveals He Was Almost in 'Misery'
Image
Billy Bob Thornton is sharing a surprising fact about his career.

The 69-year-old Landman actor spoke with Kathy Bates as part of Variety‘s Actors on Actors series, out now.

During their discussion, he revealed how he was almost in her classic film, Misery.

Keep reading to find out more…

“There was a time I went in and read for Rob Reiner for ‘Misery’…I swear to God. Originally, Richard Farnsworth, who played the sheriff, had a deputy. I saw Rob Reiner for it. And Rob said right in the room, ‘You’re the guy. We can send everybody else home.’ I was very excited,” he said.

“And I got a call from Rob Reiner — not many directors would do this — he called me and he said, ‘Listen, I’ve been looking at the script and been planning out what I’m going to do with this movie.’ He said,...

“He’s Not Sure Where It Will Go”: ’Landman’s Billy Bob Thornton Says Taylor Sheridan Doesn’t Have an Endgame for Series
Image
Taylor Sheridan may be the mastermind behind the Yellowstone universe, but according to Landman star Billy Bob Thornton, he’s not exactly working off a blueprint when it comes to his latest hit series. In a wide-ranging Variety“ Actors on Actors” interview with Kathy Bates, Thornton revealed that Sheridan prefers to follow the story as it unfolds — and doesn't necessarily know the ending when he starts writing.

“When Sheridan starts writing, he’s not necessarily sure where it’s going to go. He lets the characters and the story take him when he’s gonna write it.”

That kind of storytelling, Thornton said, makes Landman feel uniquely alive. The popular drama, set in the rough and tumble world of West Texas oil deals, debuted in 2024 and quickly became another buzzy installment in the Sheridan TV universe. Thornton stars as Tommy Norris, a fixer who straddles the line between ruthless corporate interest and personal redemption.

Billy Bob Thornton Tells Kathy Bates He Was Cut from ‘Misery’: ‘It’s Not Going to Be in the Movie’
Image
Billy Bob Thornton was almost cast alongside Kathy Bates in her Oscar-winning “Misery” role, something that Bates was unaware of until she sat down with Thornton for their Variety Actors on Actors interview.

“I swear to God. Originally, Richard Farnsworth, who played the sheriff, had a deputy. I saw Rob Reiner for it. And Rob said right in the room, ‘You’re the guy. We can send everybody else home.'”

But as the production went forward, the project evolved.

“I was very excited. And I got a call from Rob Reiner — not many directors would do this — he called me and he said, ‘Listen, I’ve been looking at the script and been planning out what I’m going to do with this movie.’ He said, ‘You can come up here and shoot this for the money or the insurance or whatever you need, but I’m just telling you,...

Taylor Sheridan’s ‘Landman’ is Plummeting on Streaming Charts Despite Big Season 2 News
Image
Despite Taylor Sheridan’s growing empire of Yellowstone spin-offs and standalone dramas, not everything with his name on it is striking oil. Landman, the West Texas-set oil industry drama starring Billy Bob Thornton, is seeing a significant drop in its streaming performance. According to FlixPatrol, the series has now fallen to #17 on Paramount+ in the United States—marking its lowest placement since its series debut. That’s a sharp drop for a show that premiered with considerable buzz and a big-name cast, and the timing couldn’t be more awkward: Landman is currently in production on Season 2, with major updates and cast additions rolling in over the last few weeks.

Landman had all the markings of a Sheridan hit when it debuted in late 2024. Thornton’s gruff performance as oil company fixer Tommy Norris gave the series a weighty emotional anchor, while supporting performances from Ali Larter, Demi Moore, and...

Billy Bob Thornton Shocks Kathy Bates by Revealing He Almost Starred in ‘Misery’ and Their Surprise ‘Matlock’ Connection
Image
It’s been quite a year for Kathy Bates and Billy Bob Thornton, who both lead hit shows. Bates stars in CBS’ “Matlock,” a reimagining of the ’80s drama, playing a scheming attorney who hides her true identity from her colleagues to obtain justice for her daughter. Meanwhile, Thornton transforms into the chain-smoking, ruthless oil company executive Tommy Norris on Taylor Sheridan’s “Landman” on Paramount+.

While on completely different paths as actors, they’ve known each other for three decades, first teaming up on Mike Nichols’ “Primary Colors,” where Bates tried to learn from the legendary director, and turned to him for advice. “I said, ‘What can you tell me about working with an actor?’” Bates recalls asking Nichols. “And he said, ‘Just love them.’”

But as it turns out, the pair almost met before “Primary Colors” — on the set of Bates’ most famous, and Oscar-winning, movie.

Ali Larter Gives Crucial ‘Landman’ Season 2 Update
Image
The second season of Landman is currently in production in Texas, and actress Ali Larter is sharing some very helpful details about what fans can expect to see when the buzzy Taylor Sheridan drama returns. In a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress discussed the ins and outs of her portrayal of Angela, the ex-wife of series lead Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) who decides to reconcile with him and bring their daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) back with her, too. In addition to discussing the grueling audition process and her own views on the character’s much-fussed overt sexuality, Larter shared some insight into what’s next, after that deadly Season 1 finale. Among the new details revealed is the fact that Demi Moore will indeed be returning to her role as Cami, the wife of the now-fallen Monty (Jon Hamm), who died in the finale of heart disease.

’Landman’s Billy Bob Thornton Dismisses the Mounting Criticism Around Taylor Sheridan’s Star-Studded Oil Drama
Image
Depending on where you are on the political and cultural spectrum, the topic of oil will elicit a different reaction from those in the opposite camp. Seeing it tackled in a TV show likeLandman will also evoke certain feelings, and when the show premiered last year, it was criticized by viewers and experts for its perceived intent to glorify oil production. However, as the season progressed, it became clear that Landman intended to present both sides in its unique fashion. Series star Billy Bob Thornton told Deadline that whatever someone thinks of the show, it's not driven by any one agenda. “I can’t speak for Taylor [Sheridan], but even though it might look like it on the surface, it doesn’t really come from a point of view of someone’s agenda. A lot of people may have had the wrong idea in the beginning because it was like,...

“I Would Have A Seizure”: Billy Bob Thornton Reacts To Landman's Shocking Father/Daughter Conversations

Billy Bob Thornton feels the same way audiences do about some of the shocking things his character, Tommy Norris, hears from his daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph) in Landman. Thornton leads Landman's cast as the eponymous fixer for the West Texas oil conglomerate, M-tex.Landman season 1 became a global hit and one of the most-watched series ever on Paramount+, in large part thanks to the show's entertaining Norris family dynamics.

As reported by People, Billy Bob Thornton was joined at the Atx TV Festival in Austin, Texas, by his Landman co-stars, including Michelle Randolph and Ali Larter, who plays Tommy's ex-wife, Angela. Thornton reflected he draws on his experience of being a dad to four kids to play Tommy in Landman, and that he and his fellow actors "did become a family." Ali Larter on playing an ’emotional rollercoaster’ opposite Billy Bob Thornton on ‘Landman’
Image
Ali Larter has played a variety of roles in her nearly 30-year career, but none has compared to Landman. "This is one of the most layered, complicated roles and shows I've ever had a chance to work on," she tells Gold Derby. The role "really has stretched me in every single way."

The latest series cocreated by Taylor Sheridan, Landman stars Billy Bob Thornton as Tommy Norris, the right-hand man for a powerful West Texas oil executive (Jon Hamm). Larter plays Tommy's ex-wife, Angela, who is first introduced during a FaceTime call while vacationing with her new husband. It doesn't take long for her to make her way back to Texas, where she attempts to reconcile with her ex and rebuild a household with their children, Cooper (Jacob Lofland) and Ainsley (Michelle Randolph).

Larter was immediately drawn to working with Sheridan, who "loves his women to be emotional roller coasters.

Image
Landman Season 2 is on a steady pace of production ahead of its November 2025 release window, and the show’s leading star has just pulled back the curtain on one of the most emotional moments from Season 1. Starring in the lead role of Tommy Norris in Landman is Billy Bob Thornton, who takes over the President of M-Tex job from Monty Miller (Jon Hamm) after he dies at the end of Season 1. While he’s still in the hospital before he passes, Tommy and Monty are catching up when Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones walks in and delivers an all-time speech. During the Landman panel at the Newport Beach TV Festival last weekend, Thornton spoke about how this cameo came to be and just how shocked he and Hamm were to watch it happen:
